The incidence of sexual violence towards young women and girls has been steadily increasing over the past few years, coupled with advances in technology which appear to facilitate it and place young people at risk. With increasing pressure from the media and celebrity culture to be sexualised from a young age, it is essential to examine what measures are in place to tackle the rising levels of sexual harassment amongst young people. Qualitative data was obtained from focus groups in two schools to establish the prevalence of sexual harassment experienced by girls and whether schools have adequate Relationships and Sex …

Tidally Induced Residual Current Over The Malin Sea Continental Slope, Nataliya Stashchuk, Vasiliy Vlasenko, Phil Hosegood, W. Alex M. Nimmo-Smith
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Tidally induced residual currents generated over shelf-slope topography are investigated analytically and numerically using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model. Observational support for the presence of such a slope current was recorded over the Malin Sea continental slope during the 88-th cruise of the RRS “James Cook” in July 2013. A simple analytical formula developed here in the framework of time-averaged shallow water equations has been validated against a fully nonlinear nonhydrostatic numerical solution. A good agreement between analytical and numerical solutions is found for a wide range of input parameters of the tidal flow and bottom topography. …

Testing Quantised Inertia On Emdrives With Dielectrics, Me Mcculloch
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Truncated-cone-shaped cavities with microwaves resonating within them (emdrives) move slightly towards their narrow ends, in contradiction to standard physics. This effect has been predicted by a model called quantised inertia (MiHsC) which assumes that the inertia of the microwaves is caused by Unruh radiation, more of which is allowed at the wide end. Therefore, photons going towards the wide end gain inertia, and to conserve momentum the cavity must move towards its narrow end, as observed. A previous analysis with quantised inertia predicted a controversial photon acceleration, which is shown here to be unnecessary. The previous analysis also mispredicted the …

Intestinal Fatty Acid-Binding Protein And Gut Permeability Responses To Exercise, Ds March, T Marchbank, Rj Playford, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
PURPOSE: Intestinal cell damage due to physiological stressors (e.g. heat, oxidative, hypoperfusion/ischaemic) may contribute to increased intestinal permeability. The aim of this study was to assess changes in plasma intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) in response to exercise (with bovine colostrum supplementation, Col, positive control) and compare this to intestinal barrier integrity/permeability (5 h urinary lactulose/rhamnose ratio, L/R). METHODS: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design, 18 males completed two experimental arms (14 days of 20 g/day supplementation with Col or placebo, Plac). For each arm participants performed two baseline (resting) intestinal permeability assessments (L/R) pre-supplementation and one post-exercise following supplementation. …

Purchasing Popular Purebreds: Investigating The Influence Of Breed-Type On The Pre-Purchase Motivations And Behaviour Of Dog Owners, Rma Packer, D Murphy, Mj Farnworth
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
How and why dog owners select a specific breed may impact upon the health of the dog they acquire, and upon the wider health of the breed they select. Brachycephalic breeds are rapidly increasing in popularity despite increasing evidence linking brachycephalism with chronic and severe health conditions. This study used a questionnaire to explore pre-, during and post-purchase behaviours and attitudes of dog-owners who own popular brachycephalic dog breeds (n = breeds) compared to popular non-brachycephalic dog breeds (n = breeds). The survey received 1,427 valid responses. Brachycephalic breed owners were younger, more likely to live with children, and to …

Plasmodium Falciparum Infection Induces Dynamic Changes In The Erythrocyte Phospho-Proteome., G Bouyer, L Reininger, G Ramdani, Phillips L D, V Sharma, S Egee, G Langsley, E Lasonder
School of Biomedical Sciences
The phosphorylation status of red blood cell proteins is strongly altered during the infection by the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. We identify the key phosphorylation events that occur in the erythrocyte membrane and cytoskeleton during infection, by a comparative analysis of global phospho-proteome screens between infected (obtained at schizont stage) and uninfected RBCs. The meta-analysis of reported mass spectrometry studies revealed a novel compendium of 495 phosphorylation sites in 182 human proteins with regulatory roles in red cell morphology and stability, with about 25% of these sites specific to infected cells. A phosphorylation motif analysis detected 7 unique motifs that …

Positioning Control On A Collaborative Robot By Sensor Fusion With Liquid State Machines, D Alberto Sala, V Joao Brusamarello, R De Azambuja, A Cangelosi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
A positioning controller based on Spiking Neural Networks for sensor fusion suitable to run on a neuromorphic computer is presented in this work. The proposed framework uses the paradigm of reservoir computing to control the collaborative robot BAXTER. The system was designed to work in parallel with Liquid State Machines that performs trajectories in 2D closed shapes. In order to keep a felt pen touching a drawing surface, data from sensors of force and distance are fed to the controller. The system was trained using data from a Proportional Integral Derivative controller, merging the data from both sensors. The results …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The genus Thiobacillus comprises four species with validly published names, of which Thiobacillus aquaesulis DSM 4255T (=ATCC 43788T) is the only species that can grow heterotrophically or mixotrophically – the rest being obligate autotrophs – and has a significant metabolic difference in not producing tetrathionate during the oxidation of thiosulfate during autotrophic growth. On the basis of this and differential chemotaxonomic properties and a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 93.4% to the type species Thiobacillus thioparus DSM 505T, we propose that it is moved to a novel genus, Annwoodia gen. nov., for which the …

Thiomicrospira spp. are small sulfur-oxidising chemolithoautotrophic members of the Gammaproteobacteria. Whilst the type species Tms. pelophila and closely related Tms. thyasirae exhibit canonical spiral morphology under sub-optimal growth conditions, most species are vibrios or rods. The 16S rRNA gene diversity is vast, with identities as low as 91.6 % to Tms. pelophila versus Tms. frisia, for example. Thiomicrospira was examined with closely related genera Hydrogenovibrio and Thioalkalimicrobium and, to rationalise organisms on the basis of the 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, physiology and morphology, we reclassify Tms. kuenenii, Tms. crunogena, Tms. thermophila and Tms. halophila to Hydrogenovibrio kuenenii comb. nov., H. …

Erosion Characteristics And Horizontal Variability For Small Erosion Depths In The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, California, Usa, David H. Schoellhamer, Andrew J. Manning, Paul A. Work
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Erodibility of cohesive sediment in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta (Delta) was investigated with an erosion microcosm. Erosion depths in the Delta and in the microcosm were estimated to be about one floc diameter over a range of shear stresses and times comparable to half of a typical tidal cycle. Using the conventional assumption of horizontally homogeneous bed sediment, data from 27 of 34 microcosm experiments indicate that the erosion rate coefficient increased as eroded mass increased, contrary to theory. We believe that small erosion depths, erosion rate coefficient deviation from theory, and visual observation of horizontally varying biota and …

How Accurately Are We Describing The Longline Bycatch? The Case Of The ‘Rare’ Shark Alopias Superciliosus In Eastern Mediterranean, P Kleitou, C Antoniou, I Giovos, D Kletou
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The bigeye thresher shark, Alopias superciliosus, is a highly cosmopolitan species found in tropical and temperate seas worldwide. Its presence in the Mediterranean has been poorly documented while in the eastern Mediterranean, it has been confined on individual-based records and considered as scarce. Hereby, we provide evidences from two longline fishing trips of at least eight by-catch specimens. These represent the first confirmed presence of A. superciliosus in the waters of Cyprus and the first documentation of such a large occurrence of the species in the eastern Mediterranean. It is evidenced that the participation of scientific observers on-board is imperative …

Connexin Hemichannels In Astrocytes: An Assessment Of Controversies Regarding Their Functional Characteristics, Bs Nielsen, Db Hansen, Br Ransom, Ms Nielsen, N Macaulay
Peninsula Medical School
Astrocytes in the mammalian central nervous system are interconnected by gap junctions made from connexins of the subtypes Cx30 and Cx43. These proteins may exist as hemichannels in the plasma membrane in the absence of a ‘docked’ counterpart on the neighboring cell. A variety of stimuli are reported to open the hemichannels and thereby create a permeation pathway through the plasma membrane. Cx30 and Cx43 have, in their hemichannel configuration, been proposed to act as ion channels and membrane pathways for different molecules, such as fluorescent dyes, ATP, prostaglandins, and glutamate. Published studies about astrocyte hemichannel behavior, however, have been …

Mechanism Of Adsorption Of Actives Onto Microporous Functionalised Calcium Carbonate (Fcc), Charlotte L. Levy, G. Peter Matthews, Giuliano M. Laudone, Samuel Beckett, Andrew Turner, Joachim Schoelkopf, Patrick A.C. Gane
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Microporous ‘functionalised’ calcium carbonate (FCC) has potential for use as a carrier for the controlled release of ‘actives’, by permeation and diffusion. We have investigated the nature of the FCC surface and the mechanism of adsorption of two typical actives, namely the anti-inflammatory drug aspirin and the flavour compound vanillin, from chloroform and aqueous ethanolic solutions. There is indirect evidence from the quantitative perturbation of Tóth isotherms that their adsorption is hindered by a stagnant diffusion layer of water trapped in the micro-porosity of the FCC. To complement previous studies of the surface of FCC, it was also tested with …

AbstractAquatic chytrid fungi threaten amphibian biodiversity worldwide owing to their ability to rapidly expand their geographical distributions and to infect a wide range of hosts. Combating this risk requires an understanding of chytrid host range to identify potential reservoirs of infection and to safeguard uninfected regions through enhanced biosecurity. Here we extend our knowledge on the host range of the chytrid Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis by demonstrating infection of a non-amphibian vertebrate host, the zebrafish. We observe dose-dependent mortality and show that chytrid can infect and proliferate on zebrafish tissue. We also show that infection phenotypes (fin erosion, cell apoptosis and muscle …

From Oppel To Callomon (And Beyond): Building A High-Resolution Ammonite-Based Biochronology For The Jurassic System, Kn Page
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
By 1849, Alcide d'Orbigny had proposed a very modern looking global subdivision of a Jurassique ‘System’, into a sequence of 10 étages. D'Orbigny's stages were based on a basic biostratigraphical framework, but there were still a number of issues with its actual demonstrable applicability internationally. In 1856, Albert Oppel took d'Orbigny's framework and, as stated by W.J.Arkell in 1933, ‘breath[ed] new life into it…placing the whole science of stratigraphical geology on a new footing’. Oppel recognized eight ‘Etagen’, divided into a sequence of ‘zones’ which he considered to be time-related to correlation units of theoretically universal application – a very …
