Characteristics Of Ex-Racing Greyhounds In New Zealand And Their Impact On Re-Homing, Jb Thomas, Nj Adams, Mj Farnworth
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
© 2017 Universities Federation for Animal Welfare The Old School, Brewhouse Hill, Wheathampstead. A small proportion of greyhounds surplus to the racing industry are entered into specialist re-homing organisations to be re-purposed as pets. Records of 835 greyhounds, from New Zealand Greyhounds as Pets, were used to investigate whether pre-adoption characteristics (age, sex, racing record, reason entered) and management factors (temperament test result, foster and trainer effects) had a bearing on re-homing success, and comparisons were made with shelter studies. Re-homing greyhounds as pets is very successful with 85.5% ultimately successfully re-homed. Only 2.9% fail as a result of failed …

Bioleaching Of Pyrite By Iron-Oxidizing Acidophiles Under The Influence Of Reactive Oxygen Species, D Huynh, S Bellenberg, M Vera Véliz, A Poetsch, W Sand
School of Biomedical Sciences
After 24h of exposure to acidic media, pyrite generates reactive oxygen species (ROS). Freshly-crushed pyrite with grain sizes between 50-100 µm at a 5 % (w/v), pulp density generated 0.17 ± 0.01 mM H2O2, while 10% pyrite generated 0.29 ± 0.01 mM and 30 % pyrite generated approximately 0.83 ± 0.06 mM. These levels of H2O2 inhibit iron oxidation in iron-grown cells of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidansT but not in pyrite-grown cells. ROS originating from pyrite, which was incubated for 24 h in acidic medium, prohibited pyrite dissolution by iron-grown cells, while pyrite-grown cells were adapted to these concentrations of ROS. Periodical …

Eco-Engineering Urban Infrastructure For Marine And Coastal Biodiversity: Which Interventions Have The Greatest Ecological Benefit?, Ema Strain, C Olabarria, M Mayer-Pinto, V Cumbo, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Along urbanised coastlines, urban infrastructure is increasingly becoming the dominant habitat. These structures are often poor surrogates for natural habitats, and a diversity of eco-engineering approaches have been trialled to enhance their biodiversity, with varying success. We undertook a quantitative meta-analysis and qualitative review of 109 studies to compare the efficacy of common eco-engineering approaches (e.g. increasing texture, crevices, pits, holes, elevations and habitat-forming taxa) in enhancing the biodiversity of key functional groups of organisms, across a variety of habitat settings and spatial scales. All interventions, with one exception, increased the abundance or number of species of one or more …

Jellyfish Inspired Soft Robot Prototype Which Uses Circumferential Contraction For Jet Propulsion, G Bridge, M Raach, Mf Stoelen
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
© Springer International Publishing AG 2017. Several robotic jellyfish have been designed over the years, yet none have properly mimicked the very efficient method of propulsion that jellyfish use. Using circumferential contraction, water is pushed out the bottom of the bell creating upwards thrust. Jellyfish use this basic movement along with more complex features to move around the seas. In this paper, we attempt to mimic this circumferential contraction using hydraulically actuated silicone bellows that expand and contract a bell made of flexible silicone skin. 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA) was used to make the structure of the robot, and …

Bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLISs) that are produced by various species of Staphylococcus spp., could have potential as topical therapeutic agents for treating highly drug-resistant staphylococcal infections. The spectrum of activity of some such agents, recently identified in our laboratory, has been characterized. This was carried out at different temperatures using deferred antaonism assay. The biological activity of 221, which produced by S. epidermidis strain 221 and shows activity against Epidemic MRSA-15 and strains of MSSA, is described in detail. The initial characterization of this agent showed that its activity is stable on plates pre-exposed to high temperatures (70-80oC/30-40mins) and displaying …

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by the development of multiple tumors in the central nervous system, most notably schwannomas and meningiomas. Mutational inactivation of the NF2 gene encoding the protein Merlin is found in most sporadic and inherited schwannomas, but the molecular mechanisms underlying neoplastic changes in schwannoma cells remain unclear. We report here that NF2-deficient cells display elevated expression levels of key enzymes involved in lipogenesis and that this upregulation is caused by increased activity of Torc1. Inhibition or knockdown of fatty acid synthase (FASN), the enzyme that catalyzes the formation of palmitic acid …
Autonomous Vehicle Decision-Making: Should We Be Bio-Inspired?, Cm Harris
Autonomous Vehicle Decision-Making: Should We Be Bio-Inspired?, Cm Harris
School of Psychology
© Springer International Publishing AG 2017. On our crowded roads, drivers must compete for space but cooperate to avoid occupying the same space at the same time. Decision-making is strategic and requires mutual understanding of other’s choices. Fully autonomous vehicles (AVs) will need risk management software to make these types strategic decisions without human arbitration. Accidents will occur, and what constitutes rational and ‘safe’ decisions will be scrutinized by the legal system. It is far from clear how AV-Human and AV-AV interactions should be managed. Game Theory provides a framework for analyzing mutual ‘games’ with 2 or more players. It …

Global warming and ocean acidification are increasingly affecting coastal ecosystems, with impacts that vary regionally depending upon local biogeography. Ocean acidification drives shifts in seaweed community dominance that depend on interactions with other factors such as light and nutrients. In this study, we investigated the photophysiological responses in the brown macroalgae species Cystoseira tamariscifolia (Hudson) Papenfuss with important structural role in the coastal Mediterranean communities. These algae were collected in the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park in ultraoligotrophic waters (algae exposed under high irradiance and less nutrient conditions) vs. those collected in the La Araña beach in oligotrophic waters (algae …

Soft Robotic Snake With Variable Stiffness Actuation, J Sheard, R Draper, M Troughton, Mf Stoelen
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
© Springer International Publishing AG 2017. In this paper, we present a prototype of a 3D printed snake-like robot for search and rescue applications, inspired by biological snake anatomy and locomotion. Unlike traditional robotics, this design takes advantage of soft materials to create a robot that is resilient to shock impacts, such as from falling debris or unsound flooring, and that can very its stiffness. The robot uses a flexible spine to connect multiple sections, allowing controlled actuation while providing a sturdy structure. Variable stiffness actuation is implemented through the use of elastic materials to act as tendons for the …

A Label-Free And Ultrasensitive Immunosensor For Detection Of Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin Based On Graphene Fets, Kamrul Islam, Ahmed Suhail, Genhua Pan
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We report on a label-free immunosensor based on graphene field effect transistors (G-FETs) for the ultrasensitive detection of Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG), as an indicator of pregnancy and related disorders, such as actopic pregnancy, choriocarcinoma and orchic teratoma. Pyrene based bioactive ester was non-covalently anchored onto the graphene channel in order to retain the sp2 lattice. The G-FET transfer characteristics showed repeatable and reliable responses in all surface modifying steps using a direct current (DC) readout system. The hCG concentration gradient showed a detection limit of ~1 pg·mL−1. The proposed method facilitates the cost-effective and viable production of graphene point-of-care …

Neurorobotic Simulations On The Degradation Of Multiple Column Liquid State Machines, R De Azambuja, D Garcia, Mf Stoelen, A Cangelosi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Two different configurations of Liquid State Machine (LSM), a special type of Reservoir Computing with internal nodes modelled as spiking neurons, implementing multiple columns (Modular and Monolithic approaches) are tested against the decimation of neurons, connections and entire columns in order to verify which one can better withstand the damage. Based on the neurorobotics outlook, this work is part of a bigger project that aims to apply artificial neural networks to the control of humanoid robots. Therefore, as a benchmark, we made use of a robotic task where an LSM is trained to generate the joint angles needed to command …
Predictive Social Perception: Towards A Unifying Framework From Action Observation To Person Knowledge, P Bach, Kc Schenke
Predictive Social Perception: Towards A Unifying Framework From Action Observation To Person Knowledge, P Bach, Kc Schenke
School of Psychology
Action observation is central to human social interaction. It allows people to derive what mental states drive others' behaviour and coordinate (and compete) effectively with them. Although previous accounts have conceptualised this ability in terms of bottom‐up (motoric or conceptual) matching processes, more recent evidence suggests that such mechanisms cannot account for the complexity and uncertainty of the sensory input, even in cases where computations should be much simpler (i.e., low‐level vision). It has therefore been argued that perception in general, and social perception in particular, is better described as a process of top–down hypothesis testing. In such models, any …
The Cytotoxic And Genotoxic Effects Of Bisphenol A On Neuronal Cells In Vitro, Shannon O'Sullivan
The Cytotoxic And Genotoxic Effects Of Bisphenol A On Neuronal Cells In Vitro, Shannon O'Sullivan
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have the potential to cause adverse effects to human health by disrupting normal homeostasis, reproduction, development and behaviour. They can simultaneously act as cytotoxic and genotoxic agents. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-documented EDC, widely used in the manufacturing of plastic and epoxy resins. Humans are regularly exposed to this chemical through ingestion of food and beverages. The adverse effects of BPA on reproduction and development have been thoroughly studied. The potential adverse effect of BPA however, on neuronal development has not been entirely explored. In this study, the potential cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of BPA …
Impacts Of Culling Invasive Lionfish (Pterois Spp.) On Native Reef Fish Assemblages In Honduras, Lauren Henly
Impacts Of Culling Invasive Lionfish (Pterois Spp.) On Native Reef Fish Assemblages In Honduras, Lauren Henly
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The invasion of the Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) to western Atlantic and Caribbean coral reefs has been documented as one of the most rapid and damaging marine finfish invasions to date, demonstrating strong negative impacts on native coral reef fish species. Comparatively little is known, however, about the effects of lionfish on whole reef fish assemblages and whether culling programmes actually make a difference reflected in fish assemblage measures. Data on reef fish assemblage metrics and community composition were collected using a diver-operated stereo-video system, in two locations with differing lionfish abundances in Honduras: Utila, where lionfish …
To What Extent Are Veterinary Practices Prepared To Treat Wildlife Patients? A Cross-Sectional Study Of Perceptions Of Responsibility And Capability Of Treating Wildlife In Uk Veterinary Practices, Emily Barnes
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Attribution of responsibility for wildlife is ambiguous, which can be problematic for those inextricably associated with wildlife care and managing decision-making processes, including veterinary professionals within general practice. Large numbers of wildlife casualties are frequently presented to veterinary practices. But there are few published data detailing this demand, the ability to respond to this demand, the attitudes towards this role and any benefits or disadvantages associated. This paper adopts a cross-sectional design involving a semiquantitative online questionnaire to develop understanding of the interface between veterinary practices and wildlife casualty management. The questionnaire was distributed to 1,706 veterinary practices in the …

Linking The Biological Impacts Of Ocean Acidification On Oysters To Changes In Ecosystem Services: A Review, Anaëlle J. Lemasson, Stephen Fletcher, Jason M. Hall-Spencer, Antony M. Knights
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Continued anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions are acidifying our oceans, and hydrogen ion concentrations in surface oceans are predicted to increase 150% by 2100. Ocean acidification (OA) is changing ocean carbonate chemistry, including causing rapid reductions in calcium carbonate availability with implications for many marine organisms, including biogenic reefs formed by oysters. The impacts of OA are marked. Adult oysters display both decreased growth and calcification rates, while larval oysters show stunted growth, developmental abnormalities, and increased mortality. These physiological impacts are affecting ecosystem functioning and the provision of ecosystem services by oyster reefs. Oysters are ecologically and economically important, providing …

Dynamic Accommodation Without Feedback Does Not Respond To Isolated Blur Cues, Jj Esteve-Taboada, Aj Del Águila-Carrasco, P Bernal-Molina, N López-Gil, Et Al
School of Health Professions
The aim of this study was to determine whether dynamic accommodation responds to isolated blur cues without feedback, and without changes in the distance of the object. Nine healthy subjects aged 21-40years were recruited. Four different aberration patterns were used as stimuli to induce blur with (1) the eye's natural, uncorrected, optical aberrations, (2) all aberrations corrected, (3) spherical aberration only, or (4) astigmatism only. The stimulus was a video animation based on computer-generated images of a monochromatic Maltese cross. Each individual video was generated for each subject off-line, after measuring individual aberrations at different accommodation levels. The video simulated …
