Modelling Cross-Shore Shoreline Change On Multiple Timescales And Their Interactions, Rob Schepper, Rafael Almar, Erwin Bergsma, Vries S De, Ad Reniers, Mark Davidson, Kristen Splinter

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

In this paper, a new approach to model wave-driven, cross-shore shoreline change incorporating multiple timescales is introduced. As a base, we use the equilibrium shoreline prediction model ShoreFor that accounts for a single timescale only. High-resolution shoreline data collected at three distinctly different study sites is used to train the new data-driven model. In addition to the direct forcing approach used in most models, here two additional terms are introduced: a time-upscaling and a time-downscaling term. The upscaling term accounts for the persistent effect of short-term events, such as storms, on the shoreline position. The downscaling term accounts for the …

In Vitro Bioaccessibility Assessment As A Tool To Predict The Toxicity Of Bioremediation Products, N. Jebril, R. Boden, C. Braungardt

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The demand for the development of bioremediation processes designed to maintain healthy environments has increased; however, evaluation of the toxicity of its products is needed. Therefore, the toxicity of the Cd-loaded beads of the bioremediation approach developed in this paper was evaluated by using in vitro human gastrointestinal simulation (BARGE method). Cd-loaded beads were obtained from adsorption experiments of Cd from artificial groundwater (AGW) and natural river water (NRW, Walkham River, England) using Ca-alginate beads containing live cells of the mutant Brevibacillus agri C15 CdR and its wild type B. agri C15, in batch flasks. The results showed that the …

Chemical And Biological Enhancement Effects Of Biochar On Wheat Growth And Yield Under Arid Field Conditions, Z Khan, Mhu Rahman, G Haider, R Amir, Et Al May 2021

Chemical And Biological Enhancement Effects Of Biochar On Wheat Growth And Yield Under Arid Field Conditions, Z Khan, Mhu Rahman, G Haider, R Amir, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Nitrogen (N) losses are prevalent under South East Asia’s due to high N fertilizer inputs, but low N fertilizer use efficiency. This leaves a large quantity of reactive N at risk of loss to the environment. Biochar has been found to reduce N losses across a variety of soil types, however, there is limited data available for semi-arid climates, particularly at a field-scale. Herein we present an exploration of the biological and chemical enhancement effects observed of a cotton stalk-based biochar on wheat growth and yield under arid field conditions. The biochar was treated with urea-N and biofertilizer (bio-power) in …

Modelling The Effects Of Traits And Abiotic Factors On Viral Lysis In Phytoplankton, Kevin J. Flynn, Susan A. Kimmance, Darren R. Clark, Aditee Mitra, Luca Polimene, William H. Wilson May 2021

Modelling The Effects Of Traits And Abiotic Factors On Viral Lysis In Phytoplankton, Kevin J. Flynn, Susan A. Kimmance, Darren R. Clark, Aditee Mitra, Luca Polimene, William H. Wilson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

A mechanistic system dynamics description is developed of the interactions between a single lytic-virus – phytoplankton-host couple. The model has state variables for virus, uninfected and infected host biomass, and describes virus and host allometry and physiology. The model, analogous to experimental laboratory virus-host systems but more amenable to hypothesis testing, enables us to explore the relative importance of some of the poorly understood factors suspected to impact plankton virus-host dynamics. Model behaviour is explored with respect to abiotic factors (light, mixed layer depth, nutrient and suspended particle loading), host traits (size, growth rate, motility) and virus traits (size, latent …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In the last decade, an awareness towards temporary rivers has increased globally in response to drying climates and growing human demand for water. However, social perceptions of temporary rivers have rarely been incorporated in their science and management. In this study, we advance an understanding of the socio-cultural values of temporary rivers principally in a European context. We used an ecosystem services-based approach for a participatory and deliberative exercise with 16 researchers and managers. Our results point out to two important aspects of socio-cultural values in temporary rivers. First, cultural ecosystem services have high socio-cultural values and usually represent the …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Assessing the vulnerability of marine invertebrates to ocean acidification (OA) requires an understanding of critical thresholds at which developmental, physiological, and behavioral traits are affected. To identify relevant thresholds for echinoderms, we undertook a three-step data synthesis, focused on California Current Ecosystem (CCE) species. First, literature characterizing echinoderm responses to OA was compiled, creating a dataset comprised of >12,000 datapoints from 41 studies. Analysis of this data set demonstrated responses related to physiology, behavior, growth and development, and increased mortality in the larval and adult stages to low pH exposure. Second, statistical analyses were conducted on selected pathways to identify …

Development Of A Secure Website To Facilitate Information Sharing In Families At High Risk Of Bowel Cancer—The Familyweb Study, Selina Goodman, Heather Skirton, Leigh Jackson, Ray B. Jones

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Individuals with pathogenic variants in genes predisposing to bowel cancer are encouraged to share this information within their families. Close relatives at 50% risk can have access to bowel cancer surveillance. However, many relatives remain unaware of their vulnerability or have insufficient information. We investigated the feasibility and acceptability of using a secure website to support information sharing within families at high risk of bowel cancer. Patients (n = 286) answered an anonymous cross-sectional survey, with 14 participating in telephone interviews. They reported that the diagnosis had a profound effect on them and their family relationships, and consequently desired more …

The Current Status Of Perioperative Hypnotics, The Role Of Benzodiazepines And The Case For Remimazolam: A Narrative Review, J. Robert Sneyd, Pedro L. Gambus, Ann E. Rigby-Jones

Peninsula Medical School

Anaesthesiologists and non-anaesthesiologist sedationists have a limited set of available i.v. hypnotics, further reduced by the withdrawal of thiopental in the USA and its near disappearance in Europe. Meanwhile, demand for sedation increases and new clinical groups are using what traditionally are anaesthesiologists' drugs. Improved understanding of the determinants of perioperative morbidity and mortality has spotlighted hypotension as a potent cause of patient harm, and practice must be adjusted to respect this. High-dose propofol sedation may be harmful, and a critical reappraisal of drug choices and doses is needed. The development of remimazolam, initially for procedural sedation, allows reconsideration of …

‘Site Of Contact Genotoxicity’ Assessment For Implants - Potential Use Of Single Cell Gel Electrophoresis In Biocompatibility Testing Of Medical Devices, T. S. Kumaravel, B. Brabu, N. Parthiban, S. S. Murugan, A. N. Jha

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Toxicological risk assessment of medical devices requires genotoxicity assessment as per ISO 10993, Part 3, which is designed to address gene mutations, clastogenicity and/or aneugenicity endpoints. ‘Site of contact genotoxicity’ is a potential genotoxic risk especially for medical implants, that is currently not addressed in biocompatibility standards. We therefore performed initial validation study on the use of alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay) for detecting ‘site of contact genotoxicity’ of medical devices, using test items made of acrylic implants impregnated with ethyl methanesulphonate (EMS). Comet assay detected increased DNA migration at the site of implantation, but not in the …

Fluorosurfactant Retention In The Foam Blanket During Gravitational Drainage Of An Aqueous Film-Forming Foam, Hk Schofield, Dp Megson, J Da Costa, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

A model aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) comprising a fluorocarbon surfactant (6:2 FTSaB), hydrocarbon surfactant, solvent, and water was deployed on a heptane fire with the gravimetrically-drained foam solution collected at regular time intervals and analysed for surfactant concentration. Foam drainage behaviour within the model foam system was non-linear for both control (no fire exposure) and fire-exposed tests, as would be expected. However, the concentration of fluorosurfactant within the drainage solution was initially lower, increasing with time. This suggests that the fluorosurfactants are retained within the foam blanket for longer than other constituents of the model foam. This is proposed to …

Differential Responses In Anti-Predation Traits Of The Native Oyster Ostrea Edulis And Invasive Magallana Gigas To Ocean Acidification And Warming, Anaëlle J. Lemasson, Antony M. Knights Apr 2021

Differential Responses In Anti-Predation Traits Of The Native Oyster Ostrea Edulis And Invasive Magallana Gigas To Ocean Acidification And Warming, Anaëlle J. Lemasson, Antony M. Knights

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Ocean acidification and warming (OAW) pose a threat to marine organisms, with particular negative effects on molluscs, and can jeopardize the provision of associated ecosystem services. As predation is an important factor shaping populations in the marine environment, the ability of organisms to retain traits valuable in predation resistance under OAW may be decisive for future population maintenance. We examine how exposure to seawater temperature (control: 16.8°C and warm: 20°C) and atmospheric pCO2 (ambient [~400], ~750, and ~1000 ppm) conditions affects traits linked to predation resistance (adductor muscle strength and shell strength) in two ecologically and economically important species …

A Bird’S Eye View On Turbulence: Seabird Foraging Associations With Evolving Surface Flow Features, Lilian Lieber, Roland Langrock, Smith W Nimmo

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Understanding physical mechanisms underlying seabird foraging is fundamental to predict responses to coastal change. For instance, turbulence in the water arising from natural or anthropogenic structures can affect foraging opportunities in tidal seas. Yet, identifying ecologically important localized turbulence features (e.g. upwellings approximately 10-100 m) is limited by observational scale, and this knowledge gap is magnified in volatile predators. Here, using a drone-based approach, we present the tracking of surface-foraging terns (143 trajectories belonging to three tern species) and dynamic turbulent surface flow features in synchrony. We thereby provide the earliest evidence that localized turbulence features can present physical foraging …
