School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Coralline algae are an ecologically important part of benthic communities worldwide and there is growing concern that ocean acidification can severely impact their calcite skeletons. Laboratory studies of coralline algae in simulated ocean acidification conditions have revealed wide response variability, making it difficult to assess their future biodiversity and contribution to ecosystem function. Here, we used natural gradients in seawater carbonate chemistry in widely separated biogeographic regions (Mediterranean, NW Pacific) to investigate the effects of ocean acidification on coralline algal biodiversity, abundance and skeletal mineralogy. Molecular identification showed a decrease in the taxonomic diversity of coralline algae with increasing acidification …

Effects Of Vegetation, Sediment Supply And Sea Level Rise On The Morphodynamic Evolution Of Tidal Channels, A Sgarabotto, A D'Alpaos, S Lanzoni
Effects Of Vegetation, Sediment Supply And Sea Level Rise On The Morphodynamic Evolution Of Tidal Channels, A Sgarabotto, A D'Alpaos, S Lanzoni
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Tidal channels play a leading role in the morphodynamic evolution of tidal environments by driving the exchange of water, sediments, and nutrients within these systems. Despite their fundamental function on landscape construction, current knowledge on their plano‐altimetric evolution in response to environmental forcing is still limited. We developed a mathematical model to address the interplay of biogeomorphic processes on the plano‐altimetric equilibrium of a straight tidal channel flanked by adjacent intertidal platforms. The model couples a one‐dimensional hydrodynamic model with a bed evolution model. The former describes the flow field within the channel and the storage contribution of lateral shoals. …
The Genetics Of Parkinson’S Disease And Implications For Clinical Practice, Jacob Oliver Day, Stephen Mullin
The Genetics Of Parkinson’S Disease And Implications For Clinical Practice, Jacob Oliver Day, Stephen Mullin
Peninsula Medical School
The genetic landscape of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterised by rare high penetrance pathogenic variants causing familial disease, genetic risk factor variants driving PD risk in a significant minority in PD cases and high frequency, low penetrance variants, which contribute a small increase of the risk of developing sporadic PD. This knowledge has the potential to have a major impact in the clinical care of people with PD. We summarise these genetic influences and discuss the implications for therapeutics and clinical trial design.

Background: Leishmaniasis is a globally important yet neglected parasitic disease transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. With new candidate vaccines in or near the clinic, a controlled human challenge model (CHIM) using natural sand fly challenge would provide a method for early evaluation of prophylactic efficacy. Methods: We evaluated the biting frequency and adverse effects resulting from exposure of human volunteers to bites of either Phlebotomus papatasi or P. duboscqi, two natural vectors of Leishmania major. 12 healthy participants were recruited (mean age 40.2 ± 11.8 years) with no history of significant travel to regions where L. major-transmitting sand flies are …

Environmental Drivers Of Reef Manta Ray (Mobula Alfredi) Visitation Patterns To Key Aggregation Habitats In The Maldives, Joanna L. Harris, Guy M.W. Stevens
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
A detailed understanding of the dynamics of small-scale (10s km) habitat use by the reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) in the Maldives Archipelago is required to develop an effective national conservation management plan for this wide-ranging species. Here, a combination of photo-ID sightings data and acoustic telemetry were used to investigate both long-term M. alfredi visitation trends and small-scale movement patterns to key habitats on the eastern side of Baa Atoll (Hanifaru Bay feeding area, Dhigu Thila multifunctional site, and Nelivaru Thila cleaning station). All tagged and most of the sighted M. alfredi exhibited high affinity to the eastern side …

Respiratory Parameters For The Classification Of Dysfunctional Insulin Secretion By Pancreatic Islets, Uma D. Kabra, Charles Affourtit, Martin Jastroch
School of Biomedical Sciences
The development of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been associated with impaired mitochondrial function. In pancreatic beta (β) cells, mitochondrial energy metabolism plays a central role in triggering and controlling glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS). Here, we have explored whether mitochondrial bioenergetic parameters assessed with Seahorse extracellular flux technology can quantitatively predict insulin secretion. We metabolically stressed male C57BL/6 mice by high-fat feeding (HFD) and measured the glucose sensitivity of islet respiration and insulin secretion. The diet-induced obese (DIO) mice developed hyperinsulinemia, but no pathological secretory differences were apparent between isolated DIO and chow islets. Real-time extracellular flux analysis, …

Biomarkers For Differentiating Grade Ii Meningiomas From Grade I: A Systematic Review, Agbolahan A. Sofela, Lucy Mcgavin, Peter C. Whitfield, C. Oliver Hanemann
Peninsula Medical School
Introduction: There are a number of prognostic markers (methylation, CDKN2A/B) described to be useful for the stratification of meningiomas. However, there are currently no clinically validated biomarkers for the preoperative prediction of meningioma grade, which is determined by the histological analysis of tissue obtained from surgery. Accurate preoperative biomarkers would inform the pre-surgical assessment of these tumours, their grade and prognosis and refine the decision-making process for treatment. This review is focused on the more controversial grade II tumours, where debate still surrounds the need for adjuvant therapy, repeat surgery and frequency of follow up. Methods: We evaluated current literature …

Concept Libraries For Automatic Electronic Health Record Based Phenotyping: A Review., Za Almowil, S-M Zhou, S Brophy
School of Nursing and Midwifery
INTRODUCTION: Electronic health records (EHR) are linked together to examine disease history and to undertake research into the causes and outcomes of disease. However, the process of constructing algorithms for phenotyping (e.g., identifying disease characteristics) or health characteristics (e.g., smoker) is very time consuming and resource costly. In addition, results can vary greatly between researchers. Reusing or building on algorithms that others have created is a compelling solution to these problems. However, sharing algorithms is not a common practice and many published studies do not detail the clinical code lists used by the researchers in the disease/characteristic definition. To address …

Satellite-Derived Shoreline Detection At A High-Energy Meso-Macrotidal Beach, Bruno Castelle, Gerd Masselink, Tim Scott, Christopher Stokes, Aikaterini Konstantinou, Vincent Marieu, Stéphane Bujan
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Publicly available satellite imagery can now provide multi-decadal time series of shoreline data from local to global scale, enabling analysis of sandy beach shoreline variability across a spectrum of temporal scales. Such data can, however, be associated with large uncertainties, particularly for beaches experiencing a large tidal range (>2 m) and energetic incident waves. We use a decade of bi-monthly topographic surveys at the high-energy meso-macrotidal beach of Truc Vert, southwest France, and concurrent wave and water-level hindcast to investigate the uncertainties associated with satellite-derived time series of the shoreline position. We show that consideration of the water level …

Loc680254 Regulates Schwann Cell Proliferation Through Psrc1 And Ska1 As A Microrna Sponge Following Sciatic Nerve Injury, C Yao, Q Wang, Y Wang, J Wu, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Peripheral nerve injury triggers sequential phenotype alterations in Schwann cells, which are critical for axonal regeneration. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are long transcripts without obvious coding potential. It has been reported that lncRNAs participate in diverse biological processes and diseases. However, the role of lncRNA in Schwann cells and peripheral nerve regeneration is unclear. Here, we identified an lncRNA, loc680254, which is upregulated in rat sciatic nerve after peripheral nerve injury. The loc680254 knockdown inhibits Schwann cell proliferation, enhances apoptosis, and hinders cell cycle, while loc680254 overexpression has the opposite effect. Mechanically, we found that loc680254 might act as a …

This pilot and feasibility study evaluated wrist‐worn accelerometers to measure recovery from day‐case surgery in comparison with daily quality of recovery‐15 scores. The protocol was designed with extensive patient and public involvement and engagement, and delivered by a research network of anaesthesia trainees. Forty‐eight patients recruited through pre‐operative assessment clinics wore wrist accelerometers for 7 days before (pre‐operative) and immediately after elective surgery (early postoperative), and again at 3 months (late postoperative). Validated activity and quality of recovery questionnaires were administered. Raw accelerometry data were archived and analysed using open source software. The mean (SD) number of valid days of …
Trace Fossils In The Permian Rocks Of English Riviera Unesco Global Geopark, Malcolm B. Hart, Christopher W. Smart
Trace Fossils In The Permian Rocks Of English Riviera Unesco Global Geopark, Malcolm B. Hart, Christopher W. Smart
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Permian breccias, conglomerates and sandstones of the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark were deposited in quite harsh, desert environments just north of the Permian Equator. Body fossil evidence is completely lacking but rare trace fossils provide evidence of a land-based community. There is a variety of traces present, probably indicative of the presence of a range of unknown animals. Though these animals cannot be identified, their occurrence is important in the understanding of the biodiversity of these Permian environments.

The Effect Of Ph, Calcium, Phosphate And Humic Acid On Cadmium Availability And Speciation In Artificial Groundwater, Nadia Jebril, Rich Boden, Charlotte Braungardt
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The interface between the ions in groundwater affects the biogeochemical behaviour of metal, and metal bioremediate by bacteria. Therefore, this study was aimed to predict the influence of pH, calcium, phosphate and humic acid on cadmium availability in artificial groundwater (AGW). Speciation and the thermodynamic calculation (MINTEQ program) were used to predict this in AGW theoretically. In results, cadmium availability diminished with an increase in pH, increase of calcium concentration and the addition of phosphate and humic acid of AGW. According to MINTEQ program, cadmium binds to some cations leaving fewer free cadmium ions available in AGW such as CdHCO3+, …

The Isolation And Identification Of Cadmium-Resistant Brevibacillus Agri C15, Nadia Jebril, Rich Boden, Charlotte Braungardt
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Eight Cd-resistant bacteria were isolated from the soil. Based on the resistance and specific growth rate, one isolate from these was chosen. The 16S rRNA (rrs) gene sequence was used to assert this isolate belongs to the genus of Brevibacillus and closely related to Brevibacillus agri (B.agri) DSM 6348T (AB112716). The isolate was termed B.agri C15. The specific growth yields and the Cd-dependent fall in specific growth yield of B.agri C15 was determined under different concentrations of Cd. The current study provides a basis for isolation Cd resistant bacteria with maximum tolerable concentration (MTC) 15 mM Cd from a contaminated …

Addition Of Composted Green Waste And Ericoid Mycorrhizal Fungi Fails To Facilitate Establishment Of Atlantic Heathland Species, Mary Lane, Mick E. Hanley, Paul Lunt, Mairi E. Knight, Charlotte B. Braungardt, Jon S. Ellis
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Post-mining restoration of heathland habitats has met with mixed success. Failures are often ascribed to the complexity of replicating soil conditions: a scarcity of organic matter and microbial symbionts in stored overburden used for restoration is frequently implicated. Nonetheless, systematic investigation of the role of both interventions is lacking. Using a greenhouse trial and a large-scale field experiment within a commercial kaolinite mine site, we explored how the addition of ericoid mycorrhizal fungi (ErMF) and organic matter influenced the establishment of dwarf ericoid species that characterize NW European Atlantic lowland heaths. Neither intervention had any positive effect on ericoid establishment …
