Constraints On The Petrologic History Of Gabbroic Shergottite Northwest Africa 6963 From Pyroxene Zoning Profiles And Electron Backscattered Diffraction, A Wenzel, J Filiberto, N Stephen, Sp Schwenzer, Sj Hammond
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Northwest Africa 6963 (NWA 6963) is a coarse‐grained, gabbroic Martian meteorite that further extends our Martian sample collection, both compositionally and texturally. Gabbroic shergottite NWA 6963 provides direct petrologic evidence of intrusive igneous conditions within the Martian crust. Here, we analyzed geochemical zoning profiles and microstructural‐crystallographic information from electron backscattered diffraction of augite and pigeonite to constrain the crystallization history of NWA 6963. Compositional zoning profiles reveal pyroxenes with augite or pigeonite cores mantled by Fe‐rich pigeonite rims. Our results suggest complex pyroxene textures and zoning profiles observed in pyroxenes in NWA 6963 are due to pyroxene accumulation from a …

The Effects Of Managerialism In Higher Education On Doctoral Theorising: Time To Think?, N Pratt, J Shaughnessy
The Effects Of Managerialism In Higher Education On Doctoral Theorising: Time To Think?, N Pratt, J Shaughnessy
Plymouth Institute of Education
Over the last 30 years higher education has seen a rise in new managerialism across all its activity, driven by neoliberal economic policy. Professional doctorates (PDs) have been part of this rise, increasing in number considerably and spawning a related interest in researching doctoral work. However, there have been few studies focused on how students develop an understanding of theory/theorisation and how supervision supports it. This paper reports on a research project involving interviews with supervisors from professional doctorate in education programmes in the UK, as a particular example of PDs in general, to explore the process of theorisation. Drawing …
Alcohol’S Impact On The Gut And Liver, Keith Pohl, Prebashan Moodley, Ashwin D. Dhanda
Alcohol’S Impact On The Gut And Liver, Keith Pohl, Prebashan Moodley, Ashwin D. Dhanda
Peninsula Medical School
Alcohol is inextricably linked with the digestive system. It is absorbed through the gut and metabolised by hepatocytes within the liver. Excessive alcohol use results in alterations to the gut microbiome and gut epithelial integrity. It contributes to important micronutrient deficiencies including short-chain fatty acids and trace elements that can influence immune function and lead to liver damage. In some people, long-term alcohol misuse results in liver disease progressing from fatty liver to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, and results in over half of all deaths from chronic liver disease, over half a million globally per year. In this review, we …

The Role Of Blue Carbon In Climate Change Mitigation And Carbon Stock Conservation, Nathalie Hilmi, Ralph Chami, Michael D. Sutherland, Jason M. Hall-Spencer, Lara Lebleu, Maria Belen Benitez, Lisa A. Levin
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The potential for Blue Carbon ecosystems to combat climate change and provide co-benefits was discussed in the recent and influential Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate. In terms of Blue Carbon, the report mainly focused on coastal wetlands and did not address the socio-economic considerations of using natural ocean systems to reduce the risks of climate disruption. In this paper, we discuss Blue Carbon resources in coastal, open-ocean and deep-sea ecosystems and highlight the benefits of measures such as restoration and creation as well as conservation and protection in helping …

Investigation Of The Hydrodynamic Performance Of An Oscillating Water Column Wave Energy Device Using A Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Model, G Zhu, J Hughes, S Zheng, D Greaves
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The efficiency of an oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converter is analyzed by adopting smoothed particle hydrodynamics and using various geometries for the seabed platform. A two-dimensional, single-phase smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model is developed to simulate the hydrodynamic characteristics and fluid structure interaction for a fixed OWC located in a numerical wave flume. A linear expression between air velocity in the duct and air pressure in the chamber was imposed for considering the effect of pneumatic model. The measured free surface elevation at the chamber centre and the oscillatory air pressure generated by the fluctuating free surface within …

The Development Of A Cyber Safety Culture, Rory Hopcraft, Kimberly Tam, Kemedi Moara-Nkwe, Kevin Jones
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
A rise in catastrophic events as a result of poor safety management (e.g. the capsizing of the Herald of Free Enterprise and Costa Concordia), has driven the maritime sector to seek improvements in its safety management. This paper will explore the vital role of the human element within safety management, and why, as part of that safety management companies must foster a safety culture. The development of safety cultures is not new to the maritime sector. However, the increase in connected systems within the sector (e.g. satellite communications etc.) means these safety cultures must now consider the risks posed by …

The Elephant In The Room: How Neoliberal Architecture Education Undermines Wellbeing, I Troiani
The Elephant In The Room: How Neoliberal Architecture Education Undermines Wellbeing, I Troiani
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This essay examines the performative space of neoliberal architectural education in the United Kingdom, its history, attributes and values, focusing on staff and student wellbeing in relation to work-time. In so doing, it addresses the vertical unit studio as the ‘elephant in the room’. As a site in which unhealthy work practices are acculturated, and which, when learned at university, can be perpetuated throughout an architect’s work life, the vertical unit system encourages a competitive ego culture at the expense of a balanced work life. In a neoliberal market economy, how might the architecture design studio /education be reframed to …
Multiple Constraints On Urban Bird Communication: Both Abiotic And Biotic Noise Shape Songs In Cities, Ann W.Y. To, Caroline Dingle, Sarah A. Collins
Multiple Constraints On Urban Bird Communication: Both Abiotic And Biotic Noise Shape Songs In Cities, Ann W.Y. To, Caroline Dingle, Sarah A. Collins
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Abstract Ambient noise can cause birds to adjust their songs to avoid masking. Most studies investigate responses to a single noise source (e.g., low-frequency traffic noise, or high-frequency insect noise). Here, we investigated the effects of both anthropogenic and insect noise on vocalizations of four common bird species in Hong Kong. Common Tailorbirds (Orthotomus sutorius) and Eurasian Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus) both sang at a higher frequency in urban areas compared to peri-urban areas. Red-whiskered Bulbuls (Pycnonotus jocosus) in urban areas shifted the only first note of their song upwards. Swinhoe’s White-eye (Zosterops simplex) vocalization changes were correlated with noise …

Parent–Child Joint Behaviors In Novel Object Play Create High‐Quality Data For Word Learning, C Chen, Dm Houston, C Yu
School of Psychology
This research takes a dyadic approach to study early word learning and focuses on toddlers’ (N = 20, age: 17–23 months) information seeking and parents’ information providing behaviors and the ways the two are coupled in real-time parent–child interactions. Using head-mounted eye tracking, this study provides the first detailed comparison of children’s and their parents’ behavioral and attentional patterns in two free-play contexts: one with novel objects with to-be-learned names (Learning condition) and the other with familiar objects with known names (Play condition). Children and parents in the Learning condition modified their individual and joint behaviors when encountering novel objects …

An Economic Evaluation Of Vagus Nerve Stimulation As An Adjunctive Treatment To Anti-Seizure Medications For The Treatment Of Drug-Resistant Epilepsy In England, Christopher Raspin, Rohit Shankar, Francesca Barion, Vicki Pollit, Joanna Murphy, Laura Sawyer, Vanessa Danielson
Peninsula Medical School
Introduction: Anti-seizure medications (ASMs) are commonly used to prevent recurring epileptic seizures, but around a third of people with epilepsy fail to achieve an adequate response. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is clinically recommended for people with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) who are not suitable for surgery, but the cost-effectiveness of the intervention has not recently been evaluated. The study objective is to estimate costs and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) associated with using VNS as an adjunct to ongoing ASM therapy, compared to the strategy of using only ASMs in the treatment of people with DRE, from an English National Health Service perspective. …

Redesigning Walking Brochures Using Behaviour Change Theory: Implications For Walking Intentions In Natural Environments, Lewis R. Elliott, Mathew P. White, Lora E. Fleming, Charles Abraham, Adrian H. Taylor
Peninsula Medical School
Summary Natural environments can be used to promote health through facilitating recreational walking. However, efforts to encourage this often neglect messages identified in psychological research that are effective at influencing intentions to walk. This is despite the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence stating that promotional efforts should utilize theoretical frameworks of behaviour change and be targeted towards less active adults. As an illustrative example, this experiment compared a prototypical recreational walking brochure with an “enhanced” version including such persuasive messages on people’s intentions to walk for recreation in natural environments. The enhanced brochure heightened intentions for inexperienced recreational …

Corrections applied by the visual system, like size constancy, provide us with a coherent and stable perspective from ever-changing retinal images. In the present experiment we investigated how willing adults are to examine their own vision as if it were an uncorrected 2D image, much like a photograph. We showed adult participants two lines on a wall, both of which were the same length but one was closer to the participant and hence appeared visually longer. Despite the instruction to base their judgements on appearance specifically, approximately half of the participants judged the lines to appear the same. When they …

Peninsula Medical School
OBJECTIVES: Maximizing quality of life (QoL) is the ultimate goal of long-term dementia care. However, routine QoL measurement is rare in nursing home (NH) and assisted living (AL) facilities. Routine QoL measurement might lead to improvements in resident QoL. Our objective was to assess the feasibility of using DEMQOL-CH, completed by long-term care staff in video calls with researchers, to assess health-related quality of life (HrQoL) of NH and AL residents with dementia or other cognitive impairment. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We included a convenience sample of 5 NHs and 5 AL facilities in the Canadian province of …

How To Refuse Research From The Ruins Of Its Own Production, Cu Andersen, G Cox
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Writing in 1965, Mario Tronti’s claim was that the greatest power of the working class is refusal: the refusal of work, the refusal of capitalist development, and the refusal to bargain within a capitalist framework. One can see how this "strategy of refusal" has been utilised in all sorts of instances by social movements, but how does this play out now in the context of wider struggles over autonomy today – not just in terms of labour power and class struggles; but also intersectional feminism and queer politics; race and decolonialism, geopolitics, populism, environmental concerns; and the current pandemic? Energy Efficiency, Energy Conservation And Determinants In The Agricultural Sector In Emerging Economies, J Liu, H Wang, S Rahman, S Sriboonchitta
Plymouth Business School
Improving energy efficiency and conservation is integral to sustain agricultural growth in emerging economies. This paper investigates the energy efficiency and energy-saving potential of the agricultural sector of 27 emerging economies using a stochastic frontier approach and Shephard distance function, and their determinants are examined using the Tobit quantile regression model. Results revealed that energy efficiency in the agricultural sector fluctuated during the period from 1998 to 2017. The median average energy efficiency was estimated at 0.74, and the cumulative energy-saving potential was estimated at 542.80 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe), which can be achieved by eliminating energy inefficiency …

Establishing and running remote consultation services is challenging politically (interest groups may gain or lose), organizationally (remote consulting requires implementation work and new roles and workflows), economically (costs and benefits are unevenly distributed across the system), technically (excellent care needs dependable links and high-quality audio and images), relationally (interpersonal interactions are altered), and clinically (patients are unique, some examinations require contact, and clinicians have deeply-held habits, dispositions and norms). Many of these challenges have an under-examined ethical dimension. In this paper, we present a novel framework, Planning and Evaluating Remote Consultation Services (PERCS), built from a literature review and ongoing …
