The Structure And Function Of The Border Parenchyma And Vein-Ribs Of Certain Dicotylendon Leaves, Richard R. Armacost Jan 1944

The Structure And Function Of The Border Parenchyma And Vein-Ribs Of Certain Dicotylendon Leaves, Richard R. Armacost

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The border parenchyma has long been recognized as a structural constant in the many kinds of angiosperm leaves. As an unbroken sheath it invests all minor veins and is an intermediary between the conductive channels and the mesophyll. Though the presence of the border parenchyma has long been known, references to it have been casual and its significance has not been adequately appreciated. The uniform presence of this sheath in an organ marked by economy of tissue has invited this attempt to evaluate its place in the foliage leaf as a whole. Schubert (24) discussed the structure of the border …

Recent Advances Of The Forest In Iowa, W. E. Loomis, A. L. Mccomb Jan 1944

Recent Advances Of The Forest In Iowa, W. E. Loomis, A. L. Mccomb

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At the time of settlement Iowa was definitely a prairie state with less than 20 per cent of its area covered by timber. Such a distribution of vegetation, coupled with short time observations, has led to the general assumption that prairie is the climax vegetation of the state. The writers have recently (7) assembled evidence that the present climate of Iowa is capable of supporting a forest climax. Prairie is therefore a subclimax associes maintained by its early establishment and by the marginal nature of the climate, but particularly by a combination of soil factors favoring prairie over woodland. The …

A Seed Key To Fourteen Species Of Geraniaceae, Margaret Murley Jan 1944

A Seed Key To Fourteen Species Of Geraniaceae, Margaret Murley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A program of seed identification by keys has been initiated in the Iowa State College Seed laboratory. The recognition of external structural characteristics of seeds is of primary importance to the seed analyst who has no material to serve as a basis of classification and identification other than seeds or fruits. Descriptions of features that aid in placing a seed in its family, genus, or species are of value not only for the seed analyst but for the taxonomic botanist as well. The Geraniaceae has been chosen for a beginning in this investigation. Fernald (1935) working on the annual and …

Raman Effect Of Some Complex Phosphates, Geo. Glocker, J. A. Campbell Jan 1944

Raman Effect Of Some Complex Phosphates, Geo. Glocker, J. A. Campbell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The most common acid of pentavalent phosphorus is orthophosphoric acid, H3PO4, and all the other acids may be looked upon as being derived from it by the process of dehydration. Thus two molecules of the ortho acid between them can lose one molecule of water forming pyrophosphoric acid, H4P2O7. Upon still stronger dehydration one molecule of water can be eliminated from each molecule of the ortho acid and the resulting product HPO3 is known as metaphosphoric acid which was extensively investigated by Graham (1). Metaphosphoric acid and its salts …
