A Thirty Year's Phenological Record Of The Spring Flowering Plants Of Henry County, H. E. Jaques, Doris Hilleary Jan 1945

A Thirty Year's Phenological Record Of The Spring Flowering Plants Of Henry County, H. E. Jaques, Doris Hilleary

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Each spring since 1915 a record has been kept of the date of appearance of the first fully opened flowers of our seed bearing plants found in Henry County. The spring of 1944 completed the thirtieth year of this record. The record is the result of a Spring Flower Contest among the students of the botany classes at Iowa Wesleyan College. The competition is usually keen, (Jaques, 1931), so although we are not insured that the very first plant in bloom was recorded, we do have one of the earliest. These plants are not considered in bloom until pollen is …

Linaria Minor (L.) Desf. In Johnson County, Iowa, Robert C. Miller Jan 1945

Linaria Minor (L.) Desf. In Johnson County, Iowa, Robert C. Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Linaria Minor (L.) Desf., a small European species, seems to have become locally abundant in railroad ballast in the vicinity of Iowa City. Specimens in the Herbarium of the State University of Iowa show that it was collected in 1932 by W. J. Himmel, and in 1942 by G. W. Martin. In 1944 it was very abundant between the ties of the Crandic interurban line and of the Rock Island line south of the Iowa City Airport. There seems to be no previous reference to this species in Johnson County. Neither Fitzpatrick (2) nor Somes (3) mention it, but …

Pollen Content Of Iowa Honey, S. M. Pattee Jan 1945

Pollen Content Of Iowa Honey, S. M. Pattee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Beekeeping literature contains numerous references to the fact that honey is eaten by some people for its pollen content. Consequently, the writer was interested in learning what kinds of pollen are contained in honey. Thirteen samples were studied to determine their pollen content. These samples were secured directly from beekeepers or were purchased in local stores. The source of honey samples and the number of pollen grains counted in each is shown in Table I.

The Roses Frau Karl Druschki And Mme. Edouard Herriot Carry On The Progeny Performance Of Their Common Parent, Mme Caroline Testout, C. D. Paris, T. J. Maney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a previous paper it was shown that the rose Mme. Caroline Testout was a superior parent in rose breeding as judged by the large number of outstanding progeny which it had produced, either as sports or when Mme. Caroline Testout or its descendants were used as pollen or seed parents. A study of the progeny of Mme. Caroline Testout reveals the fact that two of its seedlings are also outstanding in plant characteristics and as producers of superior rose varieties. These roses are the Frau Karl Druschki, one of the most reliable and beautiful white roses listed as hybrid …

Vegetation And Agriculture Of Liberia And Adjacent West Africa, Robert M. Warner Jan 1945

Vegetation And Agriculture Of Liberia And Adjacent West Africa, Robert M. Warner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper treats agriculture in its broadest sense, including the useful plant products of the native vegetation as well as those which are actually cultivated by the native peoples. The vegetation, climate, and geography, as well as the agriculture of Liberia, are intimately related to that of the whole West Africa. For this reason the discussion, although chiefly concerned with Liberia, is not confined to its narrow boundaries. As the native vegetation is considered, the natural products from it are discussed.

The Determination Of Surface Tension By Standing Waves, K. A. Yamakawa, W. C. Oelke Jan 1945

The Determination Of Surface Tension By Standing Waves, K. A. Yamakawa, W. C. Oelke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The velocity with which a wave travels over the surface of a liquid depends upon the surface tension of the liquid as well as on a gravity force due to the displacement of the liquid from its undisturbed position. For waves of large wavelength the effect of surface tension on the velocity of the wave is small; however for small wavelengths the gravity force is very small and the velocity of the wave is determined almost entirely by the surface tension. We shall therefore consider waves of very small wavelength.

A Study Of The Errors Resulting From The Use Of Turbidity In Computing The Suspended Sediment Discharge Of Iowa Streams, Paul C. Benedict Jan 1945

A Study Of The Errors Resulting From The Use Of Turbidity In Computing The Suspended Sediment Discharge Of Iowa Streams, Paul C. Benedict

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The systematic measurement of the suspended sediment transported by streams has been limited to special investigations with the exception of a few daily sampling stations operated in southwestern United States to provide data on the probable life of present and proposed reservoirs. However, the vital importance of records of sediment discharge of streams in other sections of the United States has become apparent in connection with a variety of projects relating to river control and beneficial use of the nation's water resources. In the last few years, proposed developments in Iowa for flood control, navigation, drainage systems, recreational facilities, and …

Deposition Of Sediment In The Iowa River At Iowa City, Iowa, Troy L. Péwé Jan 1945

Deposition Of Sediment In The Iowa River At Iowa City, Iowa, Troy L. Péwé

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowa River in the vicinity of Iowa City (Fig. 1.) is a mature stream which meanders over the Kansan and Iowa till plains in its course to the Mississippi River. The river, gathering water and sediment from the 3,230 square miles of the drainage basin which lies up stream from Iowa City, flows by as a muddy stream with an average discharge of 1,432 cubic feet per second (Crawford, 1942). Although sometimes heavily charged with sediment, it is on the whole not a heavy suspended sediment carrier as the average concentration of sediment in parts per million over a …

Pebble Band Ventifacts On Iowa Till In Linn County, Iowa, L. R. Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent quarry operations near Palo, Linn County, Iowa, have exposed many ventifacts at the contact of the Iowan till and Peorian loess (Fig. 1). The quarry is located in the SW. Qt., Sec. 30, T. 84 N., R. 8 W., and lies near the crest of a rock controlled hill of Cedar Valley limestone. The rocks in the pebble band range from small pebbles a fraction of an inch in diameter to boulders three feet or more in diameter. These consist of granite, rhyolite, diorite, greenstone, quartzite, quartzite conglomerate, chert, jasper, and milky quartz. No limestone was seen in the …

The Relation Between Mental Test Scores On Infants And Speech Development, Han Piao Chen, Orvis C. Irwin Jan 1945

The Relation Between Mental Test Scores On Infants And Speech Development, Han Piao Chen, Orvis C. Irwin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Chen (1) has formulated a number of indices and ratios which are useful in determining the course of development of pre-meaningful speech. He has also formulated a differential speech development index based upon the difference between speech sounds considered as isolated elements at a given infant age level and the status of these elements in adult speech. The adult speech standard used for comparison is that by Voelker (3). There are two forms of this index described, elsewhere (2). One is the difference between the number of speech sounds elements in infants and adult speech, the second form is the …

Reliability Of Speech Sound Data Of Infants, Orvis C. Irwin Jan 1945

Reliability Of Speech Sound Data Of Infants, Orvis C. Irwin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The reliability of data may be determined either by correlating odd-even frequencies of speech sounds or by the method of the percent of agreement of the items. In the following both methods will be applied to a sample of the speech sounds of infants. The sample upon which the analyses are based are sixty records of infant speech sounds from a total of over a thousand records from the first to the thirtieth month of life. Two records per month were selected randomly by means of a table of random numbers. In this sample 13 vowel and 26 consonant sounds …

The Degree Of Extensional Agreement Among Twenty Psychologists In Their Use Of The Labels Hypothesis, Theory And Law, Wendell Johnson, John T. Wilson Jan 1945

The Degree Of Extensional Agreement Among Twenty Psychologists In Their Use Of The Labels Hypothesis, Theory And Law, Wendell Johnson, John T. Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study represents an attempt to measure the degree of extensional agreement among a group of psychologists in their usage of certain labels, which were familiar to and commonly employed by all members of the group. Specifically, the problem was to measure the degree of agreement among the twenty psychologists as to the applicability of the three labels, hypothesis, theory and law to a group of twenty statements, each of which had been labelled in one of the three ways by the original author of the statement.

Teaching The Earth Sciences, Neil A. Miner Jan 1945

Teaching The Earth Sciences, Neil A. Miner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The "earth sciences", geology and geography, represent the "patriarch" and the "youth" in their life span as fields of knowledge. Geography is an old science while geology is a relatively new arrival on the scene of learning. Geography dates back to the ancients while modern geology appeared only a little over a century ago, yet they are destined to walk one with the other. The geographer is interested primarily in the surface of the earth and its inhabitants while the geologist is concerned mainly with the earth as a whole. Still the one is dependent upon the other and man …
