Determination Of Soil Moisture Content At Permanent Wilting For Us In Field Studies, J. M. Aikman, J. R. Dilworth

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In ecological investigations of interactions between plants and soil moisture, whether the aim is to determine fundamental plant-environment relationships or primarily to solve immediate plant production problems, the soil moisture content at permanent wilting, expressed as a percentage of the dry weight, is a basic determination. Although there is evidence that this soil moisture value may not represent the exact non-available moisture content of the soil (4, 8) it is generally agreed that it represents the limit of favorable plant growth conditions and will be considered here as non-available soil moisture.

The Preparation Of High School Science Teachers In Iowa, Karl A. Stiles Jan 1945

The Preparation Of High School Science Teachers In Iowa, Karl A. Stiles

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Cooperative Committee on Science Teaching published a very interesting report entitled "The Preparation of High School Science Teachers." This report pointed out that many of the science teachers in America are inadequately prepared for their jobs. The writer has long felt that that was particularly true of the Iowa science teachers. He has also been disturbed by the fact that our state requirements for certification of teachers were such that one .could teach high school biology with only five semester hours of college credit. The same thing is true for chemistry and physics. On the other hand, a language …

A Preliminary List Of The Carabidae Known To Occur In Iowa, H. E. Jaques, Leonard Redlinger Jan 1945

A Preliminary List Of The Carabidae Known To Occur In Iowa, H. E. Jaques, Leonard Redlinger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Ground Beetles, as this Coleopterous family is called, are for the most part terrestrial and hide in almost every conceivable place. They are particularly abundant under stones and objects on the ground and wherever other small invertebrates are found. Practically all of them are carnivorous and mostly nocturnal in habits. Many species are attracted to lights, and may be easily collected at night or by the use of light traps. The Carabids are predacious on worms, snails, caterpillars, grubs, maggots, and in fact almost any living animal that they can overcome. Because of their predatory habits they are considered beneficial, …

Domestic Habits Of Two Flies, David T. Jones Jan 1945

Domestic Habits Of Two Flies, David T. Jones

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent observations indicate that, on two occasions at least, two species of wild flies came into houses and acted like species we regard as house flies. The two species are: Cochliomyia americana Cushing and Patton and Ceratoxys latiuscula (Loew), which will be discussed in the order above. Cochliomyia americana, the screw-worm fly, a Calliphorid, is usually a wild elusive, swift-flying, out-of-door creature, occasionally attacking man, but more frequently ovipositing in the wounds of domestic animals. In Utah the closest they were found to a dwelling was when two were captured feeding on a fresh deer head in a garbage …

The Performance Of Psychopaths On The Wechsler-Bellevue Test, C. R. Strother Jan 1945

The Performance Of Psychopaths On The Wechsler-Bellevue Test, C. R. Strother

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A problem of persistent interest to the clinical psychologist is the discovery of characteristics of performance on psychological tests that will serve to differentiate various clinical groups. Such signs, if they can be found, would be of considerable assistance in determining diagnosis in borderline cases and would greatly enhance the value of clinical psychometrics differentiate these groups. In the course of a study of cases of psychopathic personality, initiated at the University Psychopathic Hospital by Dr. Gottlieb and Dr. Knott, we became interested in an analysis of the psychometric performance of the psychopath and in the relationships between psychometric performance, …

Current Developments In Science And Biology Teaching, W. F. Loehwing Jan 1945

Current Developments In Science And Biology Teaching, W. F. Loehwing

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Though science and education as a whole are currently and properly geared to the war effort, it is commendable that teachers and administrators are, nevertheless, already giving foresighted attention to desirable patterns of postwar instruction and matters of permanent curricular policy. While perhaps no one can as yet predict the exact social pattern of a world at peace nor fully foretell its demands upon education, certain emergent trends already delineate the scope of the problem and the probable areas of major change. Science is destined to play an important role in peace as it has in war but with notable …

The Anatomy And Embryology Of The Hemipenis Of Lampropeltis, Diadophis And Thamnophis And Their Value As Critera Of Relationship In The Family Colubridae, Hugh Clark Jan 1945

The Anatomy And Embryology Of The Hemipenis Of Lampropeltis, Diadophis And Thamnophis And Their Value As Critera Of Relationship In The Family Colubridae, Hugh Clark

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Evidence for a natural relationship among species, genera and higher groups of snakes has come principally from studies in comparative anatomy and geographical distribution. Fossil remains have yielded very little toward the solution of problems of interest to the taxonomic herpetologist, and genetic work with snakes has only recently been undertaken. The hemipenis has been used extensively in the classification of snakes. The present work was undertaken with the hope that possibly a comparative study of the developmental features of this organ might throw some light on the relationship among certain sub-families of the Colubridae which could not be ascertained …

A Preliminary Report On The Geometridae Of Iowa, Elizabeth Jerrel, H. E. Jaques Jan 1945

A Preliminary Report On The Geometridae Of Iowa, Elizabeth Jerrel, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For the convenience of anyone desiring information on the family Geometridae, order Lepidoptera, the following list of species reported from Iowa has been prepared. The Geometridae are universally distributed in all parts of the world where vegetation is found. They are rather frail in structure, with considerable expanse of wing in relation to the size of the body. They are either semi-diurnal or crepuscular. Over 800 species of Geometrids are known to occur within the limits of the United States and Canada, of which 61 have been found in Iowa. This number could doubtless be greatly enlarged by more intensive …

Studies On Iowa Spiders, Karl A. Stiles, Doris Helen Luber Jan 1945

Studies On Iowa Spiders, Karl A. Stiles, Doris Helen Luber

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The spiders reported in this paper were collected by Professor H. E. Jaques and his students in the summer of 1940. From this collection twenty-five species and fifteen genera representing seven different families have been determined. Of the one hundred and twenty-eight 'individuals reported, there are sixty-three males, sixty-three females, and two immature. These spiders came from twenty-nine counties; their geographical distribution is indicated in Plate 1. All determinations were checked by W. J. Gertsch of the American Museum of Natural History, New York City, and it is a pleasure for the authors to acknowledge their appreciation of Dr. Gertsch's …

Response Of Pine Seedlings To Site Selection On Eroded Soils, J. M. Aikman Jan 1945

Response Of Pine Seedlings To Site Selection On Eroded Soils, J. M. Aikman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pine seedlings have been planted by the millions, during the last decade, as a part of the operations program of the Soil Conservation Service. Although a plantation was usually made primarily as a soil conservation measure, interest often centered in its utilization for one or more other purposes: wildlife cover, shelterbelt, poles, lumber, landscape beautification. The trees were planted in a wide variety of locations: gullies, slides, eroded slopes, spoil banks, borrow pits and others. The variation in site quality has been greater than in site location. All aspects and almost every degree of slope is represented in these plantings …

Vanishing Original Prairie Area In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, George R. Bowne Jan 1945

Vanishing Original Prairie Area In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, George R. Bowne

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Approximately 55 years ago, in 1889, W. J. McGee, in a study of primeval forests and swamps of northern Iowa, compiled a map from original records of the U. S. General Land Office by B. J. Tarbert. On this map a wet prairie area in Twp. 83N, Range 7W, Section 15 was shown. This prairie area is in the vicinity of Mound Farm in northeast Cedar Rapids, Linn County. Due to an extensive home building plan the area is being destroyed. This natural area covers approximately 40 acres. It is bounded on the north by Maplewood Drive, and on the …

The Selection Of Prairie Areas In Iowa Which Should Be Preserved, Ada Hayden Jan 1945

The Selection Of Prairie Areas In Iowa Which Should Be Preserved, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1933, the Iowa Board of Conservation and the Iowa Fish and Game Commission now known as the Iowa State Conservation Commission prepared a report known as the Iowa Twenty-Five Year Conservation Plan. It was designated as a program for the judicious use of Iowa's natural resources. In the section of the Twenty-Five Year Plan listing and describing Scientific Preserves one type is recommended which had not been included previously. It is the Prairie Preserve.
