Compression In Microtome Sections Of Plant Tissues, H. L. Dean, L. Mangum Jan 1945

Compression In Microtome Sections Of Plant Tissues, H. L. Dean, L. Mangum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Compression and other distortions in microtome sections of animal tissues have recently been the object of studies by Dempster (1) and Marengo (2). Dempster stated that compression of animal tissues "embedded and cut in 52°C. m.p. "Biloid" paraffin varied from 15% in thick sections (20-25µ) to over 50% in identical material sectioned between 5 and 10µ. He varied the clearance angle of the knife from l-6°, tried several kinds of paraffin with different melting points and used a number of cutting speeds to determine the amount of compression under routine laboratory conditions. Marengo, however, found that compression was slight in …

The Effect Of Interpolation Of Performance Test Items On Stanford-Binet Scores, C. R. Strother, M. A. Chassell Jan 1945

The Effect Of Interpolation Of Performance Test Items On Stanford-Binet Scores, C. R. Strother, M. A. Chassell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The clinical psychologist frequently wishes to obtain both performance and verbal I.Q.'s on a child at a single session. To maintain interest and rapport, examiners have sometimes adopted the practice of interpolating the performance sub-tests between the verbal test levels. Since this constitutes a deviation from the conditions under which the Binet test has been standardized, the question has arisen as to whether this practice affects the scores obtained on the two tests. The present experiment was designed to provide an answer to this question.

Action Of Mercuric Chloride Upon Tyrosinase Produced By Various Activators, Joseph Hall Bodine Jan 1945

Action Of Mercuric Chloride Upon Tyrosinase Produced By Various Activators, Joseph Hall Bodine

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Protyrosinase, from the diapause egg of the grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis, is activated and converted into tyrosinase by a variety of reagents (Bodine and Carlson, 1940). The active enzyme thus produced has recently been shown to possess similar catalytic properties but to differ greatly in its response to high temperatures (Bodine, Tahmisian, Hill, 1944). The effect of high temperatures is probably related to the type of activator employed as well as to the manner in which the protein enzyme complex is broken down or transformed. Inasmuch as HgCl2, acts as an activator of protyrosinase it becomes of some …

Summer Birds Of The Okoboji Region 1938-1942, Robert L. King Jan 1945

Summer Birds Of The Okoboji Region 1938-1942, Robert L. King

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the summers of 1938 to 1942 inclusive the writer was in charge of the course in Field Biology at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory on Lake West Okoboji. The first two or three weeks of the course were spent in studying the breeding habits of the birds of the· region; this was supplemented by much informal work during the· rest of the season. The dates covered are approximately the last three weeks of June; all July and the first three weeks of August. In 1938, 72 species of birds were recorded and nests of 33 species were observed; in 1939, …

A List Of The Chloropidae (Diptera) Known To Occur In Iowa, Leonard Redlinger, H. E. Jaques Jan 1945

A List Of The Chloropidae (Diptera) Known To Occur In Iowa, Leonard Redlinger, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Dipterous family Chloropidae is composed of small to very 'Small, bare or nearly bare flies. These frit-flies as they are called are very numerous and representatives of the family may be collected almost anywhere. Adults of a considerable number of species are common in meadows and other places where there is rank growing grass and several of them are of considerable importance economically. They may be readily collected with a sweeping net in any of their ideal habitats.

On Transplanting Prairie Species, W. A. Anderson Jan 1945

On Transplanting Prairie Species, W. A. Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Among the properties of prairie plants emphasized by Shimek (1925) was that of persistence. He referred several times to the way in which prairie species would persist in undisturbed strips and reinvade land which had been cleared of them, (1913,) (1931). This depends, however, upon natural sowing of seeds with subsequent establishment of colonies. This note deals with actual transplanting of living plants.

The Trend Of Soluble Nitrate, Phosphate And Potassium Concentrate In The Development Of The Spinach Petiole, James F. Harrington Jan 1945

The Trend Of Soluble Nitrate, Phosphate And Potassium Concentrate In The Development Of The Spinach Petiole, James F. Harrington

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is quite clear (Beeson, 1941) that factors other than the availability of a nutrient influence the concentration of that nutrient in the plant. If the concentration in the plant of a given nutrient is to be used as a measure of the availability of that nutrient in the soil, then the other factors affecting the concentration must be evaluated so that correction factors can be established or else a method of sampling must be evolved in which the influence of the factors is negligible. Previous work by several authors indicates that sampling error can be reduced if the morphologically …
