Notes On The Egg Laying Habits Of The Soft Shell Turtles, William M. Goldsmith Jan 1945

Notes On The Egg Laying Habits Of The Soft Shell Turtles, William M. Goldsmith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the summer of 1940 the writer with six students had an opportunity to study in the vicinity of Dubuque, certain nesting habits of the smooth, brown, soft-shell turtle Amyda mutica. The river was low during June and early July, offering ideal conditions for study when the sandbars and sandy shore lines were exposed. These are the most favorable nesting grounds of Amyda mutica. Since the conditions for field study were so favorable in this locality, it was decided that before the close of the next breeding season more thorough observations would be made. Unfortunately the river remained …

Iowa's Contribution To American Men Of Science, Seventh Edition, H. E. Zabel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The latest directory has appeared during the war when many fields of science are marking time and when we have adopted a policy of interrupting the production of scientists. It thus becomes a landmark and an analysis of the data it presents has special significance. In this directory Iowa has not only maintained her position among the leading states in production of scientists but has slightly improved this relative standing.

Certain Factors Influencing The Tolerance Of Lights And Visual Acuity, A. R. Lauer, Edwin H. Silver

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of light tolerance has been studied from numerous points of view but most of the studies have not been fruitful so far as producing usable constants are concerned. Van Lear (1940) has touched on some vital related points in his study of the optical properties of reflector signs. It is shown that a very small object, such as a reflector button % inch in diameter, will be visible for a distance of from 1000-2000 feet. At such distance the wave front from a headlight cannot exceed .05 f. c. with the best luminant now in use on automobiles …

Life Histories And Ecology Of Iowa Midges (Tendipedidae). I. The Genus Tanytarsus, U. A. Hauber Jan 1945

Life Histories And Ecology Of Iowa Midges (Tendipedidae). I. The Genus Tanytarsus, U. A. Hauber

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As defined by Edwards (1929) the genus Tanytarsus differs from Chironomus (Tendipes) in its hairy wings, bare squamae, and the horizontal or indistinct radio-medial cross vein (r-m). However, the status of the genus is very unsatisfactory and a revision of the group and its related genera will probably result in placing the species here described into another genus, probably into more than one genus. Moreover, the group has had little attention in this country and there are few types available for comparison. Under the circumstances any attempt to classify specimens is done subject to future corrections. The assignment of the …

Studies On The Duff Reaction For The Preparation Of O-Hydroxaldehydes, Lawrence M. Liggett, Harvey Diehl Jan 1945

Studies On The Duff Reaction For The Preparation Of O-Hydroxaldehydes, Lawrence M. Liggett, Harvey Diehl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Moderate quantities of a large number of o-hydroxyaldehydes were required for certain investigations being conducted in this laboratory. Numerous attempts to modify and improve the classical Reimer-Tiemann reaction were uniformly unsuccessful either in minimizing the undue time required for the synthesis or in sensibly increasing the meager yields obtained. Of the other reactions which were also employed for the synthesis of these aldehydes the method recently described by Duff was found the most fruitful and expedient.

Relating The Out-Of-Doors To The Indoors In Teaching Biology, H.E. Jaques Jan 1945

Relating The Out-Of-Doors To The Indoors In Teaching Biology, H.E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Knowing the names of plants and animals and their phylogenetic relationship to each other is highly essential for success in any field of biological study. In spite of the immense numbers of species of plants and animals, it is surprising how much can be accomplished in learning to recognize the common species of a region, by giving it some consistent attention. It would seem that plant and animal recognition should have a fairly large place in nature study work in the grades and m biology classes in high school. Such work is easily within the ability of students of that …

Verbascum Phlomides Near Iowa City, W. A. Anderson Jan 1945

Verbascum Phlomides Near Iowa City, W. A. Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At the meeting of Iowa Academy of Science, 1944, Miller presented a short paper on the occurrence of some species of Verbascum in Iowa. The occurrence of V. phlomoides in Johnson County was based in part upon 2 specimens in the State University of Iowa herbarium collected in 1911 by Shimek in "Black's pasture west of city park" Iowa City. "Black's pasture" has long since changed into a residential district in which the writer now lives. One day last June he was genuinely thrilled to find among vacant lots and victory gardens a few speciments of Verbascum phlomoides which might, …
