Outline Of Culture Of Prehistoric Indians Of Iowa, W. E. Sanders Jan 1945

Outline Of Culture Of Prehistoric Indians Of Iowa, W. E. Sanders

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When groups of people live in considerable isolation, they tend to become physically homogeneous and adopt common ways of life. Their folkways extend into the details of their social customs and into the modes and styles of their material creations as well. Out of these customs and practices develop those institutions which have received the sanction of the group. The mores, customs, and institutions of a society are the particular topics of study of the sociologist. But the material devices of a social organization are equally important criteria of its culture and are, indeed, the only evidence that remains of …

A Method For Evaluation And Equation Of Test Forms, Mary Dodds, Barbara Day, A. R. Lauer Jan 1945

A Method For Evaluation And Equation Of Test Forms, Mary Dodds, Barbara Day, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Notwithstanding the pioneer work of Spearman (1927 (and numerous studies by Thurstone on problems of intelligence, most testing programs seem to postulate only one type of intelligence. Division of the total score may be made into arbitrary categories for use in advising students but the program itself does not seem to conform to accepted theory on the subject. There has been little change in the administration of the program. This is partly due to the elaborate nature of test materials used. To save labor in developing a test it has been customary to build a long one to cover a …

The Growth Of Children In Consolidated And One-Room Rural Elementary Schools, Eloise Henson, Ralph H. Ojemann Jan 1945

The Growth Of Children In Consolidated And One-Room Rural Elementary Schools, Eloise Henson, Ralph H. Ojemann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Every community, rural and urban alike, faces the problem of providing for the development of its children, youth, and adults. In providing for the school environment in rural communities two general plans have been adopted. One plan is based on the traditional, small, usually one-room school; the other on a consolidation of many districts into one large unit. It is generally assumed in professional circles that the consolidated school is the superior of the two environments. In spite of this the growth of consolidation has proceeded slowly. Furthermore there appears in the mind of many tax-payers and parents the contrary …

Exposure Risks As A Criterion Of Traffic Accidents Hazards In Iowa, Gloria I. Lauer, Max Cutler, A. R. Lauer Jan 1945

Exposure Risks As A Criterion Of Traffic Accidents Hazards In Iowa, Gloria I. Lauer, Max Cutler, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Some very unusual conclusions are sometimes drawn regarding accident hazards in specific locations. Insurance rates are frequently calculated on the basis of the density of population, car registrations, and traffic flow. While there is some empirical support for this type of reasoning, little evidence has been presented to indicate the relative importance of the factors involved. A much more scientific method of establishing insurance rates for a given area could be used if underwriters were disposed to make use of it. The following described study was conducted to determine the relative importance of factors relative to fatalities in the state …
