Iowa's First Prairie Preserve, Mrs. Addison Parker Jan 1946

Iowa's First Prairie Preserve, Mrs. Addison Parker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The State Conservation Commission is honored today to participate in this Centennial Program of the Iowa Academy of Science. It was a quarter of a century ago that the vision of such men of 8Cience as Dr. Macbride, Professor Shimek, Dean Nagler and Professor Pammel gave inspiration and direction to the creation of a State Board of Conservation. Later, in the early 30's, this Board was merged with the Fish and Game Commission, together forming the present Conservation Commission. Under the leadership of Mr. Jay Darling, a member of the former State Fish and Game Commission, the Iowa 25-year Conservation …

An Ice-Push Ridge, W. A. Anderson Jan 1946

An Ice-Push Ridge, W. A. Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The phenomenon of ice-push ridges on lake shores is a fairly common one, and the enormous pressures developed by ice need no comment. All of the lakes in the Okoboji region show ice-push ridges along their shores, with effects that persist for several years. Shimek (1915, Pl. VI, Fig. 3) included an excellent picture of such a ridge in his Plant Geography of the Lake Okoboji Region.

Seasonal Development In The Grape Following Frost Injury, J. M. Aikman Jan 1946

Seasonal Development In The Grape Following Frost Injury, J. M. Aikman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The occurrence of frost injury in microclimatic (4) areas much, later in the spring and earlier in the fall than seemed possible from an examination of Weather Bureau records has been noted many times by a number of investigators (1, 3, 6). Quantitative temperature and growth data have been presented for microclimatic areas of varied topography in southern Iowa which showed a close relationship between reduction in temperature in the early spring of 1942 and the degree of frost injury in the grape (1, 2).

Weed Control By Means Of Chemicals, A. L. Bakke Jan 1946

Weed Control By Means Of Chemicals, A. L. Bakke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Weed control by means of chemicals has become an important factor in our struggle to eradicate weeds. There are few weed problems which chemicals cannot at least aid. However, in many cases, their use is limited by their cost. It has generally been held that chemicals are too expensive for large infestations of weeds. In northwest Iowa where there are thousands of acres of European bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.) chemicals of the present day cannot be recommended on account of the cost. To control this noxious weed it has been necessary to resort to cultivation and competitive cropping, processes …

Phenology Of Mosses In Iowa, Henry S. Conard Jan 1946

Phenology Of Mosses In Iowa, Henry S. Conard

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As with other groups of plants, the Atracheata observe times and seasons. A few species may be found in all stages of reproduction at almost all times of year, but most of them produce archegonia and antheridia at a certain season, and mature capsules and spores at another season. Spring fruiting mosses are subject to the vagaries of the weather much as the wild flowers and fruit trees are. And there may be straggling stages of almost any species at almost any time. A prolonged drought is likely to delay development.

A Comparison Of Leaves Of Quercus Coccinea Muench. And Betula Lenta L. From Heath Bald And Mesphytic Ravine Habitats, Robert C. Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An ecological study of the leaves of Quercus coccinea Muench. and Betula lenta L. was undertaken by the writer during the summer of 1945 at the Mountain Lake Biological Station of the University of Virginia in Giles County, Virginia. The writer wishes to express his appreciation to Dr. I. F. Lewis, Director of the Mountain Lake Biological Station, and Mr. Ruskin S. Freer of the Department of Biology of Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Virginia, for their invaluable aid in the pursuance of this problem.

Pollen Of Iowa Honey, S. M. Pattee Jan 1946

Pollen Of Iowa Honey, S. M. Pattee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pollen that is preserved in honey reveals the identity of the plants which bees visit in gathering nectar and to some extent the place of origin and season in which it is collected. In 1944 a study of pollen in Iowa honey was made by the author and the present paper describes some of the pollen types encountered in that study. A few of the common types with descriptions are here presented and the sizes given are those of the pollen grains which had been in honey and treated according to the method outlined in the earlier paper.

A Method Of Producing Stromata In Claviceps, Lois Tiffany Jan 1946

A Method Of Producing Stromata In Claviceps, Lois Tiffany

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although numerous methods have been developed in attempts to produce the perfect stage from Claviceps sclerotia, they are often time consuming and of uncertain results. The technique reported here outlines an easy method of producing perithecial heads indoors with a minimum of attention.

Geological Notes On The Northern Natural Gas Company Well Near Oakland, Iowa, Stanley E. Harris Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study for this paper is based on the work of the many geologists who have studied and correlated the stratigraphy of Iowa. The writer is particularly indebted to the subsurface geologists who have traced the geological formations from the surface outcrop areas into the subsurface by means of examination of well cuttings.

On The Characterization Of The Algebra Of Four Fundamental Boolean Functions, E. W. Chittenden Jan 1946

On The Characterization Of The Algebra Of Four Fundamental Boolean Functions, E. W. Chittenden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Let 0 and 1 denote the null and unit elements of a Boolean algebra B. The following four functions with argument in B and values in B are of fundamental importance in Boolean algebra. They are: the null function, defined by 0x = 0; the unit function, defined by 1x = 1; the identity function j, defined by jx = x, and the complementary function c, defined by the rule, ex is the complement of x. These four functions, 0, 1, j, c, form a tri-operational algebra in the sense of Karl Menger.

On The Converse Of A Certain Theorem In Analytic Geometry, Roscoe Woods Jan 1946

On The Converse Of A Certain Theorem In Analytic Geometry, Roscoe Woods

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The three lines 1i = aix +biy+ ci = 0, i = 1, 2, 3, meet in a point if the third order determinant │a1b2c3│ is zero. This is a necessary and sufficient condition if it is assumed that three parallel lines meet in a point. This paper is concerned with the answer to the question: How many points can be associated with a given third order determinant which is zero if equations of lines are formed by using the elements of the determinant as the coefficients?

A Lecture Demonstration Apparatus For Determining The Vapor Pressure Of Water, Leo P. Sherman Jan 1946

A Lecture Demonstration Apparatus For Determining The Vapor Pressure Of Water, Leo P. Sherman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The author has devised this apparatus to show to his classes an experiment in which the vapor pressure of water is determined at temperatures from room temperature up to nearly the boiling point of water. At the right of Fig. 1 is the compact stand holding four barometric tubes. This apparatus is portable and easily carried from the storage cupboard to the lecture table. In addition to being used for this specific experiment, it is also used to demonstrate that it is air that holds up the column of mercury in a barometer. This is easily shown by means of …

A Test Study Of Cynicism And Idealism, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A test of cynicism is being constructed and standardized in order to make available a measurement of another phase of personality. Certain interesting relationships have been studied, part of which will be reported in a separate paper by Mr. Charles O. Neidt, who has been assisting with the statistical work (see Proceedings of the Iowa Academy for 1946).

The Mechanical Aptitude Of Drivers In Relation To Performance And The Wheel, Charles Miller, A. R. Lauer Jan 1946

The Mechanical Aptitude Of Drivers In Relation To Performance And The Wheel, Charles Miller, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Incidental observation of Oriental people leads the average Occidental to conclude that they do not have a high level of mechanical aptitude. Tales of Oriental drivers by eye witnesses from the Far East would particularly support such observations of automobile drivers. At Iowa State College during the winter of 1946, thirty Chinese and Japanese students taking special agricultural extension and engineering work in the United States were enrolled in the driver training course given regularly throughout the year. Although the number was limited, it was deemed advisable to make a systematic study of the progress of these learners in order …

The Form Of Items And The Distribution Of False Positive Scores In A Neurotic Inventory, Wm. A. Owens Jan 1946

The Form Of Items And The Distribution Of False Positive Scores In A Neurotic Inventory, Wm. A. Owens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It was found at Treasure Island that approximately 10% of the men passing through the Receiving Station could routinely be seen by the two psychiatrists present. A heavier load than this allowed the psychiatrists, who did a splendid job, to gain only a fleeting impression which was diagnostically unsatisfactory. When scores on the Experience Comparison Index became the basis for referral, a specific problem, which follows, obtruded itself. The partial distribution of scores made by the men diagnosed as maladjusted was, as desired, sharply negatively skewed. However, the tail of the distribution of scores obtained by the undiagnosed or "normal" …

The General Education Of The Science Teacher, R. W. Getchell Jan 1946

The General Education Of The Science Teacher, R. W. Getchell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Volumes have been written on this topic and it would be the height of temerity to assume that anything really new could be contributed in this paper. Opinions, of course, differ and one justification for this discussion lies in the exchange of ideas which it may provoke. Another reason for discussing this subject stems from the present movement in colleges and secondary schools to inject the concept of so-called "general education" into the curriculum. The best-known effort of this sort is centered in Harvard College and has been reported in the volume "General Education in a Free Society." The general …

A Survey Of Intestinal Parasites In A Unit Of U.S. Troops In Burma, With Comments On Methods For Detecting The Presence Of Endamoeba Histolytica In Stools, Elery R. Becker Jan 1946

A Survey Of Intestinal Parasites In A Unit Of U.S. Troops In Burma, With Comments On Methods For Detecting The Presence Of Endamoeba Histolytica In Stools, Elery R. Becker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In September, 19-14, the writer and one enlisted man were ordered to Burma from the Ninth Medical Service Detachment (Laboratory) to complete an intestinal parasite survey of the 1888th Engineering Aviation Battalion then engaged in constructing the air field two miles north of Myitkyina near the Irrawaddy River. Another team from the Ninth Medical Service Detachment (Laboratory) had surveyed a part of the unit in India several weeks earlier, and reported an incidence of Endamoeba histolytica of approximately 15 percent. The enlisted personnel of the organization, which was entirely colored, was drawn largely from southern states, though there was a …

An Unusually Marked Partial Albino Robin, H. E. Jaques Jan 1946

An Unusually Marked Partial Albino Robin, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Complete albinism occasionally occurs in our Common Robin. The writer has known of two broods of young Robins in each of which were two normally colored birds and two others wholly white with pink eyes. One of these nests was found at Cedar Point, Ohio, during the summer of 1912; the other at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, several years later. In each case the birds were seen on several occasions. They all developed normally and left the nest. The further history of these four albinos is unknown to us except that one of the two white birds which grew at Mt. …

Swine Brucellosis: Results Of Vaccination Experiment, S. H. Mcnutt, T. S. Leith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This discussion will consist of a consideration of the results obtained in a recently concluded brucellosis vaccination or exposure experiment in hogs together with a brief review of the results reported by others.

Sparing Genes For Further Evolution, J. A. Weir Jan 1946

Sparing Genes For Further Evolution, J. A. Weir

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The first step in biological evolution, according to the classical concept, was the ability of an organic entity, the gene, to duplicate itself by utilizing available inorganic molecules which themselves were incapable of reproduction. The next step was the acquisition by the gene of the property of catalyzing the production of a substance other than itself to be utilized as its host. In this way an aggregate of genes, each responsible for a specific reaction, could give rise to more complex structures. The manner of development of a simple organism would then depend upon the actions of the genes which …
