The Progeny Of La France, The First Hybrid Tea, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney Jan 1946

The Progeny Of La France, The First Hybrid Tea, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Just what prompted Guillot fils of Lyon-Montplaisir, France, to name a pink· rose, introduced in 1867, La France may never be known. Subsequent history has shown that this rose was the first Hybrid Tea. It was grown from a seed of Mme. Bravy, a creamy white tea, fertilized by Victor Verdier a bright rose-colored Hybrid Perpetual. Since the French rosarians have originated the first variety that became the progenitor of most of the major classes of modern roses, no better name could have been found for the first Hybrid Tea. Around the turn of the twentieth century, this class of …

Conduction In Dicotyledon Leaves, Robert B. Wylie Jan 1946

Conduction In Dicotyledon Leaves, Robert B. Wylie

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper outlines briefly certain aspects of foliage leaves that are related to the form and distinctive functions of these organs. Conclusions from earlier papers on conduction problems of leaves are noted in connection with a preliminary report on the patterns of the minor venation in dicotyledon leaves. In most of these studies on leaves it has been necessary to use serial sections cut both transversely and in the plane of the blade. The latter, or paradermal sections, are favorable for the study of all tissues, seen, as if looking through the blade. They are especially helpful in the interpretation …

Culturing Myxomycetet Plasmodia For Classroom Use, Margaret Barton Timnick Jan 1946

Culturing Myxomycetet Plasmodia For Classroom Use, Margaret Barton Timnick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Myxomycetes are organisms which exhibit both animal and plant characteristics. This dual nature is of considerable interest and worthy of consideration in planning an elementary botany course. Since the plasmodial and fruiting stages can easily be cultured, and recognized, the study of these organisms is a practical project. In the present study bark was collected from well-rotted elm, cottonwood, soft maple, oak stumps and from decaying elm branches found in cool moist places. Oak, ash, aspen, box elder and elm leaves were collected from pockets in the sod where they had gathered and wintered. These collections were made at …

Recent Developments In The Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa Lead-Zinc District, Allen F. Agnew, Allen V. Heyl Jr. Jan 1946

Recent Developments In The Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa Lead-Zinc District, Allen F. Agnew, Allen V. Heyl Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the oldest mining districts in the United States, and one from which lead and zinc ores were mined in substantial quantity during the last five years or so is situated in the upper area of drainage of the Mississippi River. The district lies in the geologic province that has been known for several decades as the "Driftless Area," and is characterized by gently-rolling topography, which extends from the nearly-level uplands to the well-dissected areas bordering the major rivers. The Mississippi on the west, the Wisconsin River on the north, and the Rock River on the east virtually bound …

Trends In High School Science Teaching, Paul E. Kambly Jan 1946

Trends In High School Science Teaching, Paul E. Kambly

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The trends in high school science teaching may be grouped under the headings curriculum, teacher training, and methods of teaching. Although no one is likely to object to this grouping, there are undoubtedly many individuals who will object to the following statement of trends. This is true because it is human to emphasize those educational trends which seem to be going in what the prognosticator believes is a sensible direction. Curriculum trends of the last 100 years have resulted in four reasonably well standardized courses in present-day high schools. From the ninth through the twelfth grade these courses are general …

Illustrations Of The Fleshy Fungi Of Iowa, Joseph C. Gilman Jan 1946

Illustrations Of The Fleshy Fungi Of Iowa, Joseph C. Gilman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The stinkhorn fungi have been chosen as the subject of the eighth group of illustrations of the fleshy fungi of Iowa. They are an interesting group because of their fetid odor that attracts flesh-eating flies, as well as their fantastic morphology. In the immature state their basidiocarps lie just below the surface of the soil, as globose to oval bodies composed of a thin leathery outer membrane over a gelatinous layer which in turn is bounded on the inside by a second membrane. The whole composes the volva which contains the unexpanded stem and spore mass. After a rain the …

The Use Of Semimicro Apparatus In The First Semester Of Freshman Chemistry, Jacob Cornog Jan 1946

The Use Of Semimicro Apparatus In The First Semester Of Freshman Chemistry, Jacob Cornog

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For many years, many colleges have been using semi-micro qualitative analysis as the laboratory work of the second semester of freshman chemistry while classical experiments that used standard sized apparatus were used during the first semester. Such a plan has the following disadvantages: each student requires two different sets of apparatus during the freshman year, refitting student lockers at mid-year is an arduous task, the expenses of providing two different sets of apparatus for each student is considerable.

Techniques Used For Improving Visual Efficiency, Robert Allbaugh, Charles Miller Jan 1946

Techniques Used For Improving Visual Efficiency, Robert Allbaugh, Charles Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the war a great many claims were made for methods of increasing visual acuity, decreasing astigmatism, correcting eye muscle balance and even to overcoming color blindness. A veritable wave of cures has arisen to aid young men with borderline vision who desire to enlist in the air corps or other branches of the service requiring nearly perfect vision. The civilian population will probably feel the effects of these remedies which are causing some concern in optical circles. The present authors are attempting to attack the problem experimentally and this paper is presented as a survey of the field as …
