Growth Of Turtles During Continual Centrifugation, Christopher H. Dodge, Charles C. Wunder Jan 1962

Growth Of Turtles During Continual Centrifugation, Christopher H. Dodge, Charles C. Wunder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Juvenile Red Eared turtles (Pseudemys scripta elegans) were continuously centrifuged for as long as 9 weeks at 5 and 6 times the Earth's gravity. On a carapace-length basis growth was 159±75% more at 5 G than under control conditions (1 G). These results were contrary to those with young mice at comparable fields in which the mice displayed a slower growth rate than their controls. The nature of the response appears to be dependent upon the feeding pattern.

Effects Of The Antithyroid Drug, Propylthiouracil, On Organ Weights, Nacl Intake, And Blood Glucose Levels Of Adrenolectomized White Rats, Ross A. Madden Jan 1962

Effects Of The Antithyroid Drug, Propylthiouracil, On Organ Weights, Nacl Intake, And Blood Glucose Levels Of Adrenolectomized White Rats, Ross A. Madden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The antithyroid drug, propylthiouracil, results in anatomical changes and increase in NaCl solution intake within one week of treatment. These changes are independent of the adrenal gland. The blood glucose levels are not changed greatly with propylthiouracil treatment.

The Influence Of The Antithyroid Drug, Propylthiouracil, On Gestation And Lactation In Rats, Kenneth M. Cook Jan 1962

The Influence Of The Antithyroid Drug, Propylthiouracil, On Gestation And Lactation In Rats, Kenneth M. Cook

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The anti-thyroid drug, propylthiouracil (PTU), when fed to female rats at the dietary level of 0.1% has a slight effect on the average number of young per litter if administered during the preconception period or gestation but if administered continuously during these periods results in a much lower litter size. PTU treatment of mothers during lactation results in cretin-like young and poor survival rates during lactation and after weaning. Ratios of thyroid weight to body weight indicate transfer of PTU to young during gestation and lactation.

Periodicity And Synchronicity Of Plasmodium Relictum In The Pigeon, John N. Farmer, A. Kenneth Moore Jan 1962

Periodicity And Synchronicity Of Plasmodium Relictum In The Pigeon, John N. Farmer, A. Kenneth Moore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A strain of Plasmodium relictum, isolated from a mourning dove, is being maintained by blood passage through pigeons. Studies concerning the periodicity and synchronicity of this organism indicate the length of the asexual cycle to be 24 hours correlated with a high degree of synchronicity. Segmentation occurs between 5 and 9 PM, with sporulation occurring between 5 AM and 1 PM. The pathogenicity of the strain to pigeons is moderate, with a tendency to kill several days after the crisis of infection has passed. Exoerythryocytic schizonts have been demonstrated in several of the birds that died, with these stages tending …

The Relationship Of The High School Music Program To The Post-High School Musical Activities Of Selected Graduates Of Decorah High School, Decorah, Iowa, Classes Of 1940, 1945 And 1950, Elton Dresselhaus

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An investment of time, money, or energy is frequently followed by an evaluation of the nature and worth of the project in terms of the results obtained. This study deals with the field of music education which represents a large scale investment on the part of the American public, an investment of time, money, and energy. It is appropriate on occasion, therefore, to consider the high school music program with regard to the value it has for the student and the community in which it is located. What are the values involved and how effective is the high school music …

Evaluating The Elementary Music Program: A Method Based On The Austin, Minnesota, 1959-60 Self-Survey, Leslie Eugene Dunlap

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It was the purpose of this study to outline a step by step method of evaluation for an elementary music program in which the music instruction is done by the classroom teacher under the direction of a music supervisor. This proposed method of evaluation was based on the beliefs that (1) the assessment of concurrence on all aspects of the music program between music staff, classroom teachers, principals, administrators, and parents, and the measurement of the reaction to and interest in music on the part of the students would comprise the scope of useful evaluation; and (2) for an evaluation …

A Study Of Special Admissions Of High School Graduates For The Years 1959, 1960, And 1961 At The State College Of Iowa, James Gregg Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

During recent months much attention has been focused on the crowded conditions of the colleges and universities in Iowa. At the same time, a topic of a more controversial nature has been that of entrance requirements and minimum academic standards. Much of this discussion has been provoked through the denial of admittance to college of those of low academic achievement in high school, and the appearance. of articles and editorials protesting this practice in magazines and newspapers. Inasmuch as the State College of Iowa has had a program of Special Admissions in operation, this writer was led to investigate the …

The Beck Word-Color Association Test As A Predictor Of Juvenile Delinquency, Janet Ellyn Berger Jan 1962

The Beck Word-Color Association Test As A Predictor Of Juvenile Delinquency, Janet Ellyn Berger

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Juvenile delinquency is an old problem, a problem that has been intensified and given new emphasis during recent years. This problem has received nation-wide attention and publicity. Since juvenile delinquency is such an old problem, its history, too, dates back many years. Among the early attempts to differentiate the treatment of youthful offenders were the efforts of the tenth century monarch, King Athelston of England He enacted a law which stated that "man shall not slay none younger than a fifteen winters' man. " l Generally, however, any juvenile who has committed an offense was considered to be an ordinary …

A Source Of Information About Air And Airplanes For Students With Limited Reading Ability In The Upper Elementary Grades, Bruce Q. Buerkens

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

None of the types of transportation conceived by man through the ages has produced greater change to his world than air transportation. The airmail letter is a common sight. Fruits and flowers are flown from semi-tropical climes as the recipients sleep in the Temperate Zone. News of air accidents is frequent. Most of the taxpayer's dollar is for defense, a lion's share of which is for air power. World leaders skip across the globe for discussions with others. Man made satellites circle the earth in less time than a commuter may spend getting to work. Yet our world stands at …

General Semantics At Work: A Handbook For High School Teachers Of English, Georgia Burge Jan 1962

General Semantics At Work: A Handbook For High School Teachers Of English, Georgia Burge

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this handbook, General Semantics at Work, is fourfold: (1) to encourage the teacher of high school English to place as much emphasis upon improving the language attitudes of his students as upon improving their language skills, on the theory that the attitudes will determine the ultimate quality of the skills; (2) to summarize the system of general semantics, which its originator, Alfred Korzybski, chooses to call "a discipline," because it not only explains but trains; (3) to discuss the nature of the three components of language attitudes; namely, (a) the language itself, the tool of the communication …

A Comparison Of Musical Pitches Of Selected Compositions Over The Last Three Hundred Years, With Implications For Contemporary Performance, Deloy Davidsen Jan 1962

A Comparison Of Musical Pitches Of Selected Compositions Over The Last Three Hundred Years, With Implications For Contemporary Performance, Deloy Davidsen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The pitch to which the present day performing musical organizations tune, and subsequently the pitch at which they play their selected compositions, has usually been accepted as being the actual pitch intended by the composer for that particular piece. This is not always true. The pitch of the note A, which is used by most orchestras for tuning, has varied greatly over the last three to four hundred year•. Therefore, the pitch used at the time a particular composition was being written may have been higher or lower than the one in use today.

The Esterification Of 1, 3-Butanediol And Phenyl Methyl Carbinol, M. Dale Hawley Jan 1962

The Esterification Of 1, 3-Butanediol And Phenyl Methyl Carbinol, M. Dale Hawley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Naturally occurring esters are common. The esters of glycerol and organic acids, constituting vegetable oils and animal fats, are essential to many forms of life. Esters of monohydroxy alcohols and organic acids occur in fruits and flowers and are partially responsible for their characteristic odors. Modern chemical technology has lifted the class of esters to still higher levels of importance in the lives of men. By varying the reactants and the reaction conditions, many compounds of significant industrial importance have been produced. Because of this wide applicability of esters in industry, esterification, its mechanism and kinetics, is under intensive research …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Individual And Group Counseling On The Development Of Creativity In A Selected Sample Of Eighth And Ninth Grade Girls, Marjorie B. Fish

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

With today's tremendous impetus toward creating new products, new ideas, and new and frequently bizarre approaches to problems and solutions, the school faces a serious and most formidable problem. It consists of not only keeping pace with these new accomplishments, but also of helping pupils develop into adults who can contribute to further explorations in the creating of ideas. The creativity of the future will be found in tomorrow's adults--and these are today's pupils.
