The Association Value Of Thirty Meaningful Words, Paul R. Hager, Marilyn E. Marshall Jan 1961

The Association Value Of Thirty Meaningful Words, Paul R. Hager, Marilyn E. Marshall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Forty-one men and women undergraduates individually wrote down the verbal associations arising in relation to each of 30 three-letter meaningful words, with a time allowance of 1 min. per word. The association value of each word was defined as the mean number of "acceptable" words written in response to it. Two sets of words were then chosen from the list for subsequent use as response terms in a verbal-motor transfer experiment. One set, formally similar, was found to have a mean association value of 8.752. The other set, formally distinct, had a satisfactorily comparable mean association value of 8.792.

Evaluation Of The Multiflora Rose Seed Planting Program For Wildlife In Iowa, Paul Leaverton Jan 1961

Evaluation Of The Multiflora Rose Seed Planting Program For Wildlife In Iowa, Paul Leaverton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Plantings of Rosa multiflora have been made to provide economical, stock-proof, living fences. The earliest such planting in Iowa was made in 1930. Because the demand exceeded the supply of plants, the State Conservation Commission in 1950 initiated a multiflora rose seed distribution program to help satisfy the demand. A checkup on success of the program showed that only 4.5% of the seed were successfully grown and transplanted. Nevertheless, 244.8 miles of rose hedges resulted from the program. Cost to the Commission was $8 per mile of established hedge.

The Hilsch Tube: Low-Pressure Effects, Philip J. Lorenz, Gerald D. Ericson, James D. Hayes Jan 1961

The Hilsch Tube: Low-Pressure Effects, Philip J. Lorenz, Gerald D. Ericson, James D. Hayes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Hilsch vortex tube was investigated at low operating pressures (gauge pressures less than one atmosphere). A mathematical analysis by Burkhardt was extended to include this pressure range. Except for differences in magnitude, the experimental results were essentially the same as those previously reported in the literature for high pressure tests. However, because of low flow rates, heat exchanges with the environment had a more pronounced effect. The dependence of Hilsch tube heating or cooling upon the specific heat ratio of the working gas was derived for low operating pressures. This result was experimentally verified for argon and air.

Experimental Program With The Iowa State University Undergraduate 1.5 Mev Cyclotron, Ronnie R. Burns Jan 1961

Experimental Program With The Iowa State University Undergraduate 1.5 Mev Cyclotron, Ronnie R. Burns

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowa State University 1.5 Mev undergraduate cyclotron experimental program is divided between cyclotron technology and nuclear physics experiments. Accelerator technology work has been done in the determination of the shape of the resonance curve as a function of the magnetic field strength and radius, the determination of magnetic tune-down as a function of radius, and the measurement of the vertical excursions of the beam. Nuclear physics experiments have been performed with the light elements.

History Of Prairie Chickens In Iowa, M. E. Stempel, Sam Rodgers Jr. Jan 1961

History Of Prairie Chickens In Iowa, M. E. Stempel, Sam Rodgers Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The peak period for prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) in Iowa was about 1880 when 69% of the state was in farms. They were found in prairie areas throughout the state. Hunters found this grouse ideal game and bags of 25 to 50 per day were easily taken. Market hunters frequently killed 200 or more per day. Farmers trapped and shot the birds to sell or to eat. As long as marginal prairie areas were only lightly disturbed by agriculture, the prairie chickens held on, but when intensive farming began, the birds nested in hayfields or in over-grazed pastures where …

Air Ion Densities In A Smoke-Filled Room, Philip J. Lorenz Jan 1961

Air Ion Densities In A Smoke-Filled Room, Philip J. Lorenz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was concerned with the differentiation and measurement of small, intermediate, and large ion densities in a sealed room. It was found that the background density of large negative ions exceeded that of any other class. Under conditions of tobacco smoke pollution, large ions of both positive and negative charge were the major components of the air ion population. This was accompanied by a persistent attrition of high mobility ions both during and after smoking.

Fungus Flora Of Panicum Virgatum L., J. A. Helin Jan 1961

Fungus Flora Of Panicum Virgatum L., J. A. Helin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The pathogenic fungi collected on Panicum virgatum in Iowa included Elsinoe sp., Phyllachora graminis, Colletotrichum graminicola, Selenophoma donacis, Puccinia panici, Tilletia maclagani, and Uromyces graminicola. Those which were saprophytic or of doubtful pathogenicity included Ophiobolus herpotrichus, Leptosphaeria microscopica, Mycosphaerella recutita, Phaeoseptoria elymi, and Phaeoseptoria festucae. Reported for the first time on Panicum virgatum are Elsinoe sp., Ophiobolus herpotrichus, Leptosphaeria microscopica, Mycosphaerella recutita, Phaeoseptoria elymi, and P. festucae. This is the initial report of Colletotrichum graminicola and Selenophoma donacis in Iowa on this host.

The Jolt-Pack Fabrication Of Special Ceramic Ware, F. W. Calderwood, D. R. Wilder, H. A. Wilhelm Jan 1961

The Jolt-Pack Fabrication Of Special Ceramic Ware, F. W. Calderwood, D. R. Wilder, H. A. Wilhelm

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The jolt-pack method for fabrication of refractory crucibles and other shapes is described. The particle size distribution of the material to be packed has been found to be an important consideration in this method. Data are presented on packing densities of various graded fractions of beryllia and the development of a dense-packing mixture is described.

Proton Orbit Calculations For The Iowa State University Cyclotron, Alfred H. Mueller Jan 1961

Proton Orbit Calculations For The Iowa State University Cyclotron, Alfred H. Mueller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper describes the equations governing the proton beam in a small cyclotron and reports calculations carried out on the Iowa State University undergraduate cyclotron. These calculations relate the intensity of the proton beam to changes in the magnetic field of the cyclotron and give the beam height as a function of the radius drawn from the center of the dee box. It was found that changes in the magnetic field strength of only a few gauss can result in a large reduction of the beam strength. Calculations of the beam height show that the beam height changes little with …

The Bounty System In Iowa, David W. Waller, Paul L. Errington Jan 1961

The Bounty System In Iowa, David W. Waller, Paul L. Errington

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of the history and functioning of the bounty system in Iowa demonstrates the legal weaknesses, costliness, and general ineffectiveness of this method of controlling undesired wildlife. The bounty laws have developed by trial and error. Early laws were simplified and primarily intended for the protection of livestock from the larger predators, notably wolves. After 1900, the program was expanded to include nuisance species and, more recently, in intended behalf of game protection. Bounty rates were changed many times in response to changes in attitudes toward troublesome wildlife and the cost of maintaining the program. Because of bounty frauds, …
