Ecesis Of A Weed Flora, Richard W. Pohl, Walter Loomis Jan 1963

Ecesis Of A Weed Flora, Richard W. Pohl, Walter Loomis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The topsoil from an Iowa State University building site was piled for reuse. The site had been mulched with local oat straw the previous winter, and the pile developed a flora of remarkable diversity and vigor. Plants of 44 species, representing 32 genera of 14 families were identified on the soil pile. Soil from beneath the surface of the pile was collected and placed in greenhouse flats, and the emerging seedlings were counted and identified during a 10 months period. Twelve additional species, representing 11 genera and 8 families, which had not been collected on the soil heap were found …

Nematode Populations In Corn Plots Receiving Different Soil Amendments, David Castaner Jan 1963

Nematode Populations In Corn Plots Receiving Different Soil Amendments, David Castaner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The magnitude of nematode populations in corn plots receiving manure, lime, or a fertilizer supplying N-P-K was compared with populations in corn plots not receiving manure, lime, or an N-P-K fertilizer. Pratylenchus spp. populations were highest in N-P-K fertilized plots and in manured plots. Helicotylenchus microlobus were highest in in plots in which no N-P-K had been applied. Xiphinema americanum populations were highest in limed plots. Seasonal population patterns for the three nematodes appeared to be characterized by two peaks, one in the early spring prior to the planting of corn, and the other in the late summer or fall …

Influence Of Mutable Genes On Induction Of Instability In Maize, Peter A. Peterson Jan 1963

Influence Of Mutable Genes On Induction Of Instability In Maize, Peter A. Peterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Mutable systems possess transposable elements that cause mutability of associated gene loci. The En system (composed of I and En) was used to test the induction of mutability of two selected loci, A2, and C possessing the normal alleles. In a test of over five million gametes one mutable was found at each of the selected sites as well as two others, both dominant and non-allelic to the selected sites. It appears that this low rate of induction of mutability (as compared to other reports) is a consequence of the non-randomness of site selection; i.e., a certain …

Application Of Guggenheim's Short Formula To The Calculation Of Dipole Moments, Robert J. Buenker, George N. Schulte Jan 1963

Application Of Guggenheim's Short Formula To The Calculation Of Dipole Moments, Robert J. Buenker, George N. Schulte

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

By substituting the actual physical constants of benzene into Guggenheim's short formula for orientation polarization, a simple relation for the dipole moment was obtained. The accuracy of this equation was tested with empirical data of some one hundred dipole moment measurements and the relation was found to agree within 0.02 debyes with calculations made using the Kumler-Halverstadt equations.

Food And Growth Of Spottail Shiners And Other Forage Fishes Of Clear Lake, Lowa, Bernard L. Griswold Jan 1963

Food And Growth Of Spottail Shiners And Other Forage Fishes Of Clear Lake, Lowa, Bernard L. Griswold

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Collections of spottail shiners, Notropsis hudsonius, and other forage fishes were made by systematic seining in Clear Lake in 1961. Spottails made up 71.6 per cent of all forage species and were collected most frequently in areas of vegetation. Although most spawning occurred in late May and early June, a few spottails apparently spawned in August. Young spottails grew an average of 0.05 millimeters per day which is slower than in warmer years. No parasites of spottails were observed. Tadpole madtoms, Noturus gyrinus, made up 18.4 per cent of all forage species collected, higher than any previous year. All species …

Minnow Population Of Grimes Creek In Relation To Pollution, Earl E. Kelling Jan 1963

Minnow Population Of Grimes Creek In Relation To Pollution, Earl E. Kelling

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Weekly minnow collections were made from August 13 to November 26, 1960, at five stations in Grimes Creek. Six major species were identified, counted and measured. The upper region of the creek was abandoned by the minnow population within a few days after pollution from a canning factory at Grimes, Iowa entered the stream. Late spawning species of minnows were unable to spawn successfully, which suggested one mechanism for selective evolution of minnow populations.

An Application Of Covering Spaces, George Seifert Jan 1963

An Application Of Covering Spaces, George Seifert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Consider an n-cell containing the origin and suppose its boundary Sn-1 has the following property: every point on Sn-l contains a neighborhood in Sn-l such that any ray from the origin intersecting this neighborhood intersects it exactly once. Then it is shown by using the concept of a covering space that any ray from the origin intersects Sn-1 exactly once.

Photoelectro-Photometric Survey Of Night Sky Conditions In The Vicinity Of Iowa City, Satoshi Matsushima, J. R. Porter, Y. Terashita, F. D. Ingram Jan 1963

Photoelectro-Photometric Survey Of Night Sky Conditions In The Vicinity Of Iowa City, Satoshi Matsushima, J. R. Porter, Y. Terashita, F. D. Ingram

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the summer 1962, a systematic survey of night sky conditions in the vicinity of Iowa City was carried out for the purpose of selecting the best site for the proposed research observatory of the State University of Iowa. A photoelectric photometer was attached to the Newtonian focus of an 11-inch reflector whose equatorial mounting was modified to a horizontal system. The equipment was carried by a truck and observations were made at six different sites, ranging in distance from eight to twenty-three miles in all directions from the city. In order to eliminate random errors due to variations in …

Concentricity Determinations For Hollow Cylindrical Shapes Utilizing Resonant Energy, Roy L. Buckrop Jan 1963

Concentricity Determinations For Hollow Cylindrical Shapes Utilizing Resonant Energy, Roy L. Buckrop

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The inner to outer diameter concentricity relationship of several long, hollow cylindrical shapes was determined by evaluating their wall thickness uniformity. This was accomplished through the utilization of the ultrasonic resonance gauging technique.

The Effects Of Phlorizin, 2,4-Dinitrophenol, And Oxygen Deprivation On The Intestinal Transport Of D-Glucose, Alice Marie Fox Jan 1963

The Effects Of Phlorizin, 2,4-Dinitrophenol, And Oxygen Deprivation On The Intestinal Transport Of D-Glucose, Alice Marie Fox

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The effect of various concentrations of phlorizin and 2,4-dinitrophenol, plus the effect of oxygen deprivation on intestinal absorption of D-glucose was investigated. Paired segments of turtle (Chrysemys picta) small intestine in vitro were used. Preparations were incubated for one hour in a shaking water bath at 30°C in Krebs-Ringer-bicarbonate, with or without inhibitor. Phlorizin, in all concentrations used, was found to prevent uptake of glucose by the mucosal epithelium. Inhibition also occurred, in a lesser degree, with 2,4-dinitrophenol, and when the system was flushed with nitrogen instead of air.

Digestive System Morphology And Salivary Enzymes Of The Potato Leafhopper, Empoasca Fabae (Harris), Lorna Chumley Berlin, Edwin T. Hibbs Jan 1963

Digestive System Morphology And Salivary Enzymes Of The Potato Leafhopper, Empoasca Fabae (Harris), Lorna Chumley Berlin, Edwin T. Hibbs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The digestive tract of the potato leafhopper Empoasca fabae (Harris) was very much like descriptions of the tracts of other Empoasca and closely related Cicadellidae. Major morphological differences: (1) no filter chamber was present in E. fabae, (2) the Malpighian tubules were joined at their distal ends which lie free in the body cavity, (3) and the fourth Malpighian tubule branched from one of the other tubules. The principal salivary gland of E. fabae was composed of four pairs of lobes which varied in histological and cytological detail as well as in their staining reaction with toluidine blue, a …

Kaolinite From Warsaw Geodes, Keokuk Region, Iowa, John B. Hayes Jan 1963

Kaolinite From Warsaw Geodes, Keokuk Region, Iowa, John B. Hayes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

White, compacted masses of kaolinite are common in the famous geodes from the upper mudstone unit of the lower Warsaw Formation around Keokuk, Iowa. X-ray diffraction studies of the fine silt-size, pseudhexagonal grains show the kaolinite to be exceptionally well crystallized and free from impurities. Stacking faults are produced by grinding the kaolinite, which have a marked effect on X-ray patterns. The relationship of kaolinite to other mineral euhedra in geode cavities indicates that kaolinite formed early in geode history. Several lines of evidence suggest that the kaolinite originated from the fine-grained silicate residue remaining after acid dissolution of early …

Experimental Development Of Mathematical Expressions To Fit Physical Situations By Ninth-Grade Science Students, Joseph J. Snoble Jan 1963

Experimental Development Of Mathematical Expressions To Fit Physical Situations By Ninth-Grade Science Students, Joseph J. Snoble

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was undertaken in an attempt to correct frequent student failure in understanding mathematical relationships describing physical phenomena. The study involved two sections of University of Iowa Laboratory High School ninth graders enrolled in the course entitled Energy/Space. The proposed solution to the problem was to allow the students to experimentally develop their own mathematical expressions to fit specific physical situations. This procedure replaced the laboratory approach which merely called upon the students to verify relationships which had been previously introduced in classroom discussion. The experimental approach, utilized by the students, involved a general discussion of the problem, materials …

Proton Orbits In A Small Cyclotron, Ronald W. Moses Jr. Jan 1963

Proton Orbits In A Small Cyclotron, Ronald W. Moses Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the theoretical study of a cyclotron, it is possible to make many simplifying approximations and obtain satisfactory results. For example, off-center orbits may be considered as circular in some cases. A method was developed to simulate cyclotron operation by calculating the trajectories of proton motion in cylindrical coordinates. Results of the calculations were then used to determine where simpler calculations may or may not be used. The conclusion is that resonant couplings between axial and radial oscillations should be studied by the calculation of proton trajectories. It is unnecessary to study electric decelerations with this method since circular orbit …

Notes On Iowa Diatoms Iv. : The Diatoms In A Northwest Iowa Fen, W. Randall Shobe, Eugene F. Stoermer, John D. Dodd

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The physical features of a fen are discussed including chemical and physical analyses of the water. Diatom samples were taken during the summer of 1962 and a list of 48 species distributed among 20 genera was compiled. A series of photomicrographs of some of the species is presented. Ecological and floristic differences between cold and warm pools are discussed and a comparison with the diatom flora of the Cabin Creek Raised Bog in Indiana (published by C. W. Reimer) is made.

Gustatory Responses Of A Tropical Frugivorous Bat, Irving F. Fisherman Jan 1963

Gustatory Responses Of A Tropical Frugivorous Bat, Irving F. Fisherman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The electrical activity of the chorda tympani nerve in response to chemical stimulation of the tongue of the tropical frugivorous bat Artibeus jamaicensis was compared to that of several rodents and carnivores. The slope of the NaCl response-concentration curve is much steeper than curves for the other animals and the maximum response is reached at a lower concentration (approximately 0.25M NaCl). NaCl is a more adequate stimulus than NH4Cl, LiCl is approximately equal to NaCl, and KCl response is low. These results are similar to those previously found for the rodents but quite different from those for the …
