The Lime Creek Formation In The Area Of Garner, Lowa, Donald L. Koch Jan 1963

The Lime Creek Formation In The Area Of Garner, Lowa, Donald L. Koch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The rock exposed in quarries southwest of Garner, Iowa, has been in question as to its stratigraphic position, having been correlated with both Middle and Upper Devonian formations with no supporting evidence. Stratigraphic control was established by comparing lithologies present in the Cedar Valley, Shell Rock, and Lime Creek formations in exposures and noting the changes that occur in the subsurface through a detailed study of well cuttings. Lithologic and paleontologic evidence supports a Lime Creek correlation.

Survival Of Empoasca Labae (Harris) (Cicadellidae, Homoptera) On Synthetic Media, Douglas L. Dahlman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Nymphs of the potato leafhopper were caged in small clear plastic snap boxes for individual survival studies. All experiments were conducted at 85°F in a darkened incubator, minimizing responses to light and varying temperature. The leafhopper nymphs were sustained on an agar gel matrix containing sugars and amino acids. Relative nutritional adequacy was evaluated by the time required to reach 50% survival. The lowest mortality rate occurred on a 7% sucrose-2% agar medium. Preferential utilization of the glucose fraction of sucrose was indicated. A medium composed of agar, sucrose, and the 10 amino acids essential for human and rat nutrition …

The Plasmodium Of The Myxomycete Cribraria Violacea, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus Jan 1963

The Plasmodium Of The Myxomycete Cribraria Violacea, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Cribraria violacea is a minute myxomycete which could be expected to possess a protoplasmodium similar to the plasmodia of other minute species such as Clastoderma debaryanum, Echinostelium minutum, and Licea parasitica. Observations reported here show that it differs from protoplasmodia previously described in forming a small network with a fanlike area at the advancing front, and in showing protoplasmic streaming which did not reverse its direction of flow during two 40-minute periods of continuous observation.

A Preliminary Study Of Chromosome Number In Oak Sprouts, David F. Conover

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A preliminary study of chromosome numbers in oak sprouts was undertaken to determine the frequency of polyploid stump sprouts. A satisfactory method of making slide mounts using lateral bud primordia of newly burst buds was developed. None of the limited number examined to date was polyploid.

The Effect Of Temperature Change On The Reaction Time Of Helisoma Trivolvis (Say), Paul K. Gauer Jan 1963

The Effect Of Temperature Change On The Reaction Time Of Helisoma Trivolvis (Say), Paul K. Gauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of reaction speed, at different temperatures, of fresh-water snails (Helisoma trivolvis) is reported. Organic response to mechanical stimuli shows a definite relationship of reaction speed to the environmental temperature. There is an increase in rate of reaction from 40°F to 98°F; and a subsequent leveling off trend from 98°F to 110°F. Snail size has no appreciable effect upon reaction speed. Learning by experience is suggested.

A Rapid Celloidin Method For The Rotary Microtome, G. L. Walls Jan 1963

A Rapid Celloidin Method For The Rotary Microtome, G. L. Walls

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A method is described which combines the author's hot celloidin technique (see STAIN TECHNOL., VII. pp. 135-145) with a form of the clearing-before-cutting procedure. The method requires only 16-17 days and yields a block which may he cut in any microtome, the sections being as thin as those afforded by paraffin with comparable material. The advantages of celloidin over paraffin, listed in the author's earlier paper (v. s.), are retained in the present method which, though consuming more time than the hot process, requires less skill and gives superior results.

Analysis Of Fe2o3, Tio2 And Cr2o3 In Mullite By X-Ray Fluorescence, M. O. Marlowe, Thomas D. Mcgee Jan 1963

Analysis Of Fe2o3, Tio2 And Cr2o3 In Mullite By X-Ray Fluorescence, M. O. Marlowe, Thomas D. Mcgee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The basic theory and methods of X-ray fluorescence are briefly discussed. Pure synthetic mullite was made by mixing aluminum and silicon chlorides in non-aqueous solvent, coprecipitating as hydroxides, calcining to remove solvents and firing to 1600°C. Additions of Fe2O3, TiO2 and Cr2O3 to the high purity mullite were used to produce standard calibration curves for use in the analysis of unknowns. Experimental techniques are described and standard curves are presented. The method is rapid and results are comparable in accuracy to those of wet chemical analysis.

Age, Growth, And Food Habits Of Johnny, Slenderhead And Blacksided Darters Of Boone County, Lowa, James R. Karr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Age, growth, and food habit studies were done on 61 johnny darters, Etheostoma nigrum, 25 slenderhead darters, Percina phoxocephala, and 18 blacksided darters, P. maculata, taken from the Des Moines River, Boone County, Iowa, during the summer 1962. The growth rate of blacksided darter is faster than either of the other two species. Coefficients of condition, length-weight relationships, and body-scale relationships are similar for the three species. The food of all species is over 90% insect. Leeches and tapeworms parasitized the darters.

Observations On Bog And Pollen Stratigraphy Of The Des Moines Glacial Lobe, Lowa, P. H. Walker, Grace S. Brush

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As part of an investigation into the effect of environmental changes of landscape and soils on the Des Moines lobe (Cary till), three deep bogs (Colo, Jewell, McCulloch) were examined in detail. The center profile of each has a surface peat underlain by deep, dark-colored, calcareous silts; these in turn are underlain by a second peat zone which passes into basal calcareous silts and eventually to till. Preliminary pollen data on the Colo bog shows six zones. The key zones are Zone 1 (0 to 75 inches), in which the pollen is of dominantly herbaceous genera indicating an open grassland …

Preparing Our Students For The Future, Mary Janela Jan 1963

Preparing Our Students For The Future, Mary Janela

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Science education must advance with the times. Methods and ideas must change. We, as teachers, are being closely scrutinized. We can no longer sit back complacently. Since Sputnik, there has been grave concern over the ability of our students to apply knowledge to practical problems. Students are naturally curious so we must develop their inquiring minds and instill in them habits of sound reasoning, accurate judgment, and careful evaluation. To live in our democracy of the twentieth century the students must be trained to develop their powers of critical thinking.

What Is This Fuss About General Science?, Phillip E. Miller

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

With the advent of the superb Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS), Physical Sciences Study Committee (PSSC), Chemical Education Material Study (CHEM Study), and the Chemical Bond Approach (CBA) courses, secondary science teachers, at last, spend more of their efforts teaching instead of hacking up mediocre, out-dated texts and scrambling for up-to-date "supplementary" material that should have been the meat of the original "text".

Report On A Fungus Isolated From An Ozone Meter, Mary M. Vinje, James M. Vinje

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The fungus Penicillium lilacinum Thom was found to be responsible for the malfunction of ozone meters sent in from such widely divergent geographical locations as Iowa; Tennessee; Washington, D. C.; Maryland; Ottawa, Canada; and Hawaii. In 12 out of 15 isolations a pure culture of the fungus was obtained. The source of the fungus was traced to the rubber used in the assembly of the solution pump. The sensor solution used in the machine proved to be inhibitory but not fungicidal. Attempts at control included chemical additives of which methylparaben, scorbic acid, propylparaben, and sodium benzoate were all stimulants when …

Media Sterilization With Propylene Oxide, Robert C. Goss, Jack L. Marr Jan 1963

Media Sterilization With Propylene Oxide, Robert C. Goss, Jack L. Marr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sterilization of potato dextrose agar against bacteria air contaminants occurs during the 6th hour of exposure and against fungi in the 4th hour. The fungicidal activity was broader than the bactericidal activity of propylene oxide. Direct application of propylene oxide to Petri plates containing PDA was ineffective. With plastic plates a chemical reaction took place between the chemical and the plastic. In a closed system sterilization of the plates and medium was accomplished at approximately 1.25 ml of propylene oxide per liter of volume. The addition of propylene oxide directly to nutrient broth effected 90% sterility under certain conditions.

The Scotch Grove Strath In Maquoketa River Valley, Iowa, James Hedges, George W. Darland Jr. Jan 1963

The Scotch Grove Strath In Maquoketa River Valley, Iowa, James Hedges, George W. Darland Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Maquoketa river, located in the Dissected Till plains of east-central Iowa, was established consequent on the Nebraskan and Kansan drift sheets and superposed across preglacial bedrock valleys eroded into the exhumed preDesmoinesian backslope of the Niagara cuesta. Where deeply entrenched into bedrock uplands, except in the Richland Highlands, modern Maquoketa river is bordered by rock terraces, which bevel structure. The presence of a series of shallow-phreatic caves 20 to 60 feet below the terraces, which transects structure, shows that the terraces are erosional, not structural, features. Caves related to the strath contain evidence of a time of aeration followed by …

Some Empirical Regularities Of The Humber River Drainage Net, Michael C. Roberts Jan 1963

Some Empirical Regularities Of The Humber River Drainage Net, Michael C. Roberts

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In describing the drainage net of the Humber River (Ontario), the various parameters used (stream length, number, order: basin area: mean annual discharge) were found to have clear linear relationships. These relationships could not have arisen by chance, and, hence, reflect the regularity of the erosional processes at work. Product moment correlation analysis was also employed between stream length and basin area.
