Solutions For Diffusion Equations With Integral Type Boundary Conditions, K. L. Deckert, C. G. Maple Jan 1963

Solutions For Diffusion Equations With Integral Type Boundary Conditions, K. L. Deckert, C. G. Maple

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This work was suggested by a paper by V. W. Bolie in which he develops a non-linear impedance theory for bioelectrodes. In his work, he arrives at a pair of diffusion equations with the interesting feature that one of the boundary conditions is expressed as a definite integral. Since we are unaware of any work in which a parabolic equation is subjected to this type of boundary condition, we naturally asked the question as to whether such a problem has a solution; and if it does, is the solution unique? In this paper we answer these questions for the linear …

A One-Day Modification Of The Dry Ash Pbi Method, J. I. Routh Jan 1963

A One-Day Modification Of The Dry Ash Pbi Method, J. I. Routh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A modification of the dry ash method for the protein bound iodine content of plasma or serum has been devised. This method permits completion of the determination in one laboratory day and produces results that compare favorably with the original two-day method. Recovery experiments were satisfactory and indicate no loss of iodine in the drying, ashing, or colorimetric procedures in the method.

Preliminary Investigation Of Thermokarst Development On The North Slope, Alaska, Gary S. Anderson, Keith M. Hussey Jan 1963

Preliminary Investigation Of Thermokarst Development On The North Slope, Alaska, Gary S. Anderson, Keith M. Hussey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The North Slope of Alaska is extensively featured by a characteristic form of morphology designated "thermokarst". Briefly, thermokarst is a term applied to a "karst-like" topography formed in permafrost regions that have had extensive thaw. Aerial photographs of the North Slope reveal many thaw features that have forms analogous to karst areas.

Preliminary Investigation Of The Little Sioux River Valley, David E. Pedersen, Robert A. Lohnes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this paper is to describe the aerial extent, thickness, and nature of the materials that comprise the modern alluvium and terrace sediments of the Little Sioux River valley. This paper is part of a study conducted in the spring and summer of 1962 which was concerned with the alluvial morphology and engineering properties of the deposits within the valley. This research was supported by the Iowa Engineering Experiment Station and Department of Geology, Iowa State University.

Measurement Of Standard Metabolism, Water Loss And Body Temperature Of The Little Brown Bat, Robert E. Henshaw, G. Edgar Folk Jr. Jan 1963

Measurement Of Standard Metabolism, Water Loss And Body Temperature Of The Little Brown Bat, Robert E. Henshaw, G. Edgar Folk Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A complete description is given of a respirometer, suitable for unrestrained five to ten gram bats, from which the following variables were simultaneously directly measured: air and body temperatures, relative humidity, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, water loss, and electrocardiograms. Temperature was measured with specially mounted bead thermistors and a wheatstone bridge. Relative humidity was measured with an adsorptive electronic sensor which was excited by a transistorized oscillator, and had the voltage output rectified and fed to an oscillograph. Electrocardiograms were taken with custom-made "safety" pins chronically indwelling through the dorsolateral thoracic epidermis. Electrical connection was made with common clothing …

Notes On Diatoms V. : Epilithic Diatom Biomass In The Des Moines River, Ryan W. Drum Jan 1963

Notes On Diatoms V. : Epilithic Diatom Biomass In The Des Moines River, Ryan W. Drum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Luxuriant epilithic growths of the diatom, Gomphonema olivaceum (Lyngbye) Kutz., were observed to be growing throughout a 320 km section of the Des Moines River. Flat rocks covered with the diatom growth were collected and the live weight of the diatom biomass per square centimeter was determined to be 0.7 gm. This included 0.021 gm dry weight of organic matter. Using these values, the standing epilithic diatom biomass in one 6 km section of the river was estimated to be 1260 metric tons (live weight) containing 37.6 metric tons dry weight of organic matter. The bulk of the growth consisted …

Teaching And Applying The Gene-For-Gene Hypothesis For Interactions In Host:Parasite Systems, J. A. Browning

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A "lock-for-key" method of teaching the gene-for- gene hypothesis for interactions in host:parasite systems, and an example of the application of the hypothesis to an "unknown" disease, stem rust of oats, are presented.

The Effect Of Ferric Chloride On The Cadmium Reaction, Richard Bogan, Joseph Plamondon, Kenneth W. Kraus Jan 1963

The Effect Of Ferric Chloride On The Cadmium Reaction, Richard Bogan, Joseph Plamondon, Kenneth W. Kraus

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The reaction of di-n-butylcadmium with either capryl chloride or benzoyl chloride at -10° in the presence of ferric chloride yields 50% of the expected ketone. The reactions of the same acid chlorides with diphenylcadmium are hampered by coupling of the aromatic cadmium reagent in the presence of the ferric chloride. A yield of 20-30% of ketone can be obtained, however, if the ferric chloride is added to the precooled acid chloride followed by the addition of the diphenylcadmium.

A Comparison Of The Abilities Of Secondary Teachers And Students Of Biology To Understand Science, Phillip E. Miller Jan 1963

A Comparison Of The Abilities Of Secondary Teachers And Students Of Biology To Understand Science, Phillip E. Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A comparison of the level of understanding science between secondary teachers and students has been conducted. The biology teachers were made up of two groups. The newly certificated group had just completed their college training; and the other group was made up of experienced, on the job, teachers. The biology teachers were compared with groups of secondary biology students in grades 7-12 inclusive. Significant differences were found between the 7th grade group and all other groups, except the 8th grade group. The implications of teachers with less understanding of science than a sizable group of their students is discussed. There …

Naturally Occurring Agglutinins For Pheasant Red Blood Cells, Paul Vohs Jr., Elizabeth A. Cerny, A. O. Haugen Jan 1963

Naturally Occurring Agglutinins For Pheasant Red Blood Cells, Paul Vohs Jr., Elizabeth A. Cerny, A. O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sera from 24 vertebrate species and 3 antisera specific for human type A, B and Rh-D cells, respectively, were tested for their ability to agglutinate red blood cells of ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus sp.). Normal sera were grouped on the basis of agglutination titer, and the majority were included in the moderate and strong groups. Differential agglutination was limited, however. Substantial variation in ability to agglutinate pheasant cells occurred among sera of individuals of the same species. The usefulness of natural sera tested appears limited in the investigation of blood group factors of ring-necked pheasants.

Viscosity Of Silicate Melts, David M. Martin, Thomas D. Mcgee Jan 1963

Viscosity Of Silicate Melts, David M. Martin, Thomas D. Mcgee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1949, Poole developed an empirical relationship which expressed the logarithm of viscosity of silicate melts as a function of the hyperbolic sine of the reciprocal absolute temperature, e.g., log. visc. = Sinh M/T.

Poole showed the validity of this relationship for normal soda-lime glasses. This paper extends the relationship to variations in composition making possible the prediction of viscosity as a function of temperature for a wide range of three and four component glass systems. Graphs are presented to facilitate calculations. The relation has been verified by comparison with published data. The structural and theoretical implications of this relationship …
