A Method Of Culturing Air Bacteria For Protozoa Media, Robert F. Mote

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An infusion-filtrate method for a continuous supply of air-borne bacteria is described, using either hay, soil, rice, or alfalfa for the infusion-filtrate bacterial cultures. Four cc of autoclaved infusion filtrate provided 1 cc of available bacteria each day. Three experiments each for hay, rice, soil, and alfalfa filtrate for periods of 31 and 60 days are described.

A Study Of The Laboratory Method Versus The Lecture Method Of Teaching Biology, Curtis E. Mcmallum Jan 1966

A Study Of The Laboratory Method Versus The Lecture Method Of Teaching Biology, Curtis E. Mcmallum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two sections of biology students at the eighth grade level were taught a unit concerned with the cell with two different methods. One group experienced only lectures and discussions. The other group experienced only laboratory sessions. Although there were certain limitations to the study, the general results tended to favor the laboratory approach. This was particularly apparent in the case of the upper one-third of the classes.

Studies On Two Members Of The Liceales With A Description Of The Life Cycle Of Licea Biloris, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Mary St. John Gronen Jan 1966

Studies On Two Members Of The Liceales With A Description Of The Life Cycle Of Licea Biloris, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Mary St. John Gronen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Licea biforis was first described in 1893 by B. Morgan (Lister, 1911), and later by Lister (1911), Fullmer (1921), Macbride (1922), Hagelstein (1944), and Martin (1949). Distribution of the species as given by Hagelstein (1944) is: Iowa, Kansas, New York, Ontario, and Pennsylvania. Martin (1949) adds Poland and Eastern Asia, and Macbride (1922) includes Canada. Hagelstein (1944) is of the opinion that L. biforis probably has a much wider distribution than that indicated above, but is overlooked because of its small size and its habitat on dead wood.

Intraspecific variability in flowering response to photoperiod was studied. There was a significant correlation between date of flowering and the collection site.

Seed Character Relationships In The Leguminosae', Haig Koppooshian, Duane Isely Jan 1966

Seed Character Relationships In The Leguminosae', Haig Koppooshian, Duane Isely

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Leguminosae possess two basic seed types, a generalized form characteristic of the Mimosoideae and Caesalpinioideae, and a derived type characteristic of the Papilionoideae. Intermediates between caesalpinioid and papilionoid seeds strengthen the hypothesis that the phyletic roots of the Papilionoideae are in the Caesalpinioideae. Seed data affirm a relationship between the Mimosoideae and Caesalpinioideae but provide little new information as to the nature of this kinship. The Mimosoideae are not closely related to the Papilionoideae on the basis of seeds or other features.

Reactions Of Thiolacids With As20s And As2s3, Lyman R. Caswell Jan 1966

Reactions Of Thiolacids With As20s And As2s3, Lyman R. Caswell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Thiolbenzoic acid in refluxing benzene reacts with As2O3 or As2S3 to give arsenic (III) thiobenzoate. Under similar conditions dithiolterephthalic acid gives a product which appears to be As (SOCC6H4COSH)3; thiolacetic acid gives acetyl sulfide; and phthaloyl sulfde is unreactive.

The Rehabilitation And Preservation Of Indian Burial Mounds By The National Park Service, Garland J. Gordon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At Effigy Mounds National Monument in northeast Iowa, the National Park Service is conducting a program to rehabilitate Indian burial mounds which were damaged by unknown individuals before the park was established. The program is described relating the historical background and reasoning for it to the basic purposes of the National Park Service. The use of archeological methods results in the retrieval of data and information that would otherwise be lost or remain unknown. Soil monoliths and other soil samples were collected for detailed analysis at a later time in connection with studies of prehistoric environments. Two basic and inexpensive …

Lntraspecific Variation Within The Conodont Polygnathus Brevilamina, Wayne I. Anderson, Karen Ozias Jan 1966

Lntraspecific Variation Within The Conodont Polygnathus Brevilamina, Wayne I. Anderson, Karen Ozias

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Intraspecific variation was observed in a study of 177 well preserved specimens of the conodont Polygnathus brevilamina. Variations in the size of platform and in the degree of ornamentation of the platform are illustrated. These variations are present in juvenile specimens. The study indicates that the original definition of Polygnathus brevilamina is too narrow and that a broader concept of speciation is needed if conodont species are to be useable.

An Investigation Of Filigree As Design In Selected Pieces Of Jewelry, Anne K. Graham Jan 1966

An Investigation Of Filigree As Design In Selected Pieces Of Jewelry, Anne K. Graham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The ancient art of filigree jewelry has almost become a lost art. Today, some of the jeweler-artist-craftsmen believe that much of the filigree being done lacks the originality that could make it a creative art expression. Because traditional filigree designs have been handed down from generation to generation they have become copies of what has been done before. Filigree design, by the definition of being any thread-like decoration, is a linear approach to jewelry. A linear approach suggests delicate work with a lightness and femininity. I have tried to maintain a light airy quality in my filigree jewelry, and for …

A Comparison Of Beginning Typewriting Student Achievement On Testing Material Of Standardized Difficulty And Testing Material Of Progressive Difficulty, Donald Eugene Clayton Jan 1966

A Comparison Of Beginning Typewriting Student Achievement On Testing Material Of Standardized Difficulty And Testing Material Of Progressive Difficulty, Donald Eugene Clayton

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Through many years of experimentation in the field of skill psychology and in the typewriting classroom, the principle that a skill must develop from the simple to the complex has been widely accepted. In interpreting the significance of this principle, authorities in the field of typewriting appear to have accepted the idea that the copy used in the early learning stage of typewriting should be easy. It, therefore, seems appropriate to challenge the "easy-first" plan in testing. Perhaps, if beginning typewriting students were tested periodically from the first, on more difficult standardized copy, the results would be more helpful in …

The Role Of Women In Four Faulkner Novels, Betty W. Gray Jan 1966

The Role Of Women In Four Faulkner Novels, Betty W. Gray

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The women in the writings of William Faulkner have not captured the attention of readers or critics in the way that the male characters have. A close examination of the criticism of Faulkner' s writings reveals that little special attention has been paid to the literary treatment of the women per se. The women have usually been treated in connection with other themes.

A Progressive Collection Of Transcriptions For The Development Of Woodwind Quintets At The Junior High School Level, Charles C. Hendrickson Jan 1966

A Progressive Collection Of Transcriptions For The Development Of Woodwind Quintets At The Junior High School Level, Charles C. Hendrickson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The emphasis on chamber music may be considered one of the most interesting and important developments in the school music program today. There is perhaps no other musical medium which holds greater possibilities for the development of the student's musical ability. In the years following World War II, the instrumental music programs in many schools have grown to the point where there are sufficient string and wind players to perform many major orchestral works. A student who performs in either an orchestra or band, however, cannot develop a critical sensitivity towards ensemble.

This study analyzed the arguments, evidence, and style of the comments by The Honorable Harold Royce Gross on the subject of agriculture from the debates in the House of Representatives. Dating from January 3, 1949, to August 30, 1964, the thesis covered approximately sixteen years of the Congressman's life in politics. Separate from the analysis of his comments is a résumé of his adult life: his college training, his journalism and radio work, and his participation in politics. An additional chapter reviews the changes and problems in agriculture during that period. The three main chapters were concentrated on an analysis …

The Experimental Use Of The Marianne Frostig Developmental Test Of Visual Perception And The Frostig Program For The Development Of Visual Perception For The Diagnosis And Remediation Of Visual Perceptual Abilities In Young Educable Mentally Retarded Children, Mary Ellen Dreier Jan 1966

The Experimental Use Of The Marianne Frostig Developmental Test Of Visual Perception And The Frostig Program For The Development Of Visual Perception For The Diagnosis And Remediation Of Visual Perceptual Abilities In Young Educable Mentally Retarded Children, Mary Ellen Dreier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There has been increasing interest in recent years in finding effective approaches to the education of the retarded child. Remedial programs based upon the diagnosis of specific disabilities of the child with mild mental retardation may serve to remove or decrease some of the obstacles to learning for the child. One of these obstacles may be faulty visual perception. This investigation was based upon the experimental use of a test designed to assess visual perceptual abilities and a program designed to train visual perceptual abilities.

Influence Of Gibberellic Acid And Indole-3-Acetic Acid On The Morphology And Population Dynamics Of Eudorina Elegans, Dale Robert Frank Jan 1966

Influence Of Gibberellic Acid And Indole-3-Acetic Acid On The Morphology And Population Dynamics Of Eudorina Elegans, Dale Robert Frank

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Recent intensified . interest in Protista has been motivated largely by simultaneous advances in development of precision equipment and of analytical techniques. The Protista serve well for biological investigation since they are easily obtained, grow well under artificial culture conditions, have a high reproductive potential , and thrive with a mini mum of care. In addition, Protista may be maintained as clonal cultures resulting in identical or nearly identical characteristics, since all organisms are progeny of the same progenitor. The advantages provided by such identical heredities are obvious.

History Of The Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit, Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1966

History Of The Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The history of the Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit is traced from its beginning as a locally sponsored agency in 1932. It became one of the Wildlife Units when the National program was established in 1935. The late J. N. (Ding) Darling, nationally prominent cartoonist, conceived and negotiated the establishing of the Research Unit program. His belief in the soundness of the research unit idea is witnessed by the fact that he helped to finance the Iowa Unit from his personal funds during its first 3 years of existence. The succession of Unit leaders, and their specialties, the increase in …

Notes On Prairie Species In Iowa. I. Germination And Establishment Of Several Species, Paul A. Christiansen, Roger Q. Landers Jan 1966

Notes On Prairie Species In Iowa. I. Germination And Establishment Of Several Species, Paul A. Christiansen, Roger Q. Landers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Information is given concerning the germination and early establishment of 30 prairie species. A stratification treatment was included for all seeds, and scarification was also used for the legumes. Germination percentage in greenhouse flats was generally higher than in field plots with variation in germination ranging from 96% in compassplant, Silphium laciniatum, to zero in some such as Rosa suffulta and Gentiana puberula. Seedlings in field plots were subjected to five levels of competition throughout the growing season. Establishment, measured by numbers of seedlings and vigor in September, was most successful on weed free treatments, least successful on cover crop …

Cesium From Pollucite By Aluminum Reduction, W. A. Gault, T. L. Young, H. A. Wilhelm Jan 1966

Cesium From Pollucite By Aluminum Reduction, W. A. Gault, T. L. Young, H. A. Wilhelm

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Aluminum metal was found to liberate cesium almost quantitatively from pollucite ore when reacted under conditions of operation determined by experiments described in the paper. In the treatment, ore ground to pass a 150 mesh sieve is mixed with atomized aluminum and the mixture heated under an inert atmosphere in a retort. Pollucite ore from one source yielded its cesium when treated at 950°C for 4 h while pollucite ore from another source required a temperature up to 1050°C to yield essentially all of its cesium. The cesium metal obtained from pollucite by aluminum reduction is about 90% pure; it …

Many useful separations involving these elements are indicated.

A Discussion Of The Economic Basis For Paid Hunting On Farm Land, Wade H. Hamer Jan 1966

A Discussion Of The Economic Basis For Paid Hunting On Farm Land, Wade H. Hamer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Farmers are the nation's principal wildlife managers. They control production, growth, and harvest of wildlife on about 76% of the land. The farmer assigns a personal value to wildlife and regulates its abundance accordingly. His need for game and non-game animals is largely supplied by the amount produced as a by-product of his normal farming activities. The presence of wildlife in numbers greater than the farmer's needs produces conditions that adversely affect the farm business. An example is given of the costs associated with intentional management for wildlife and paid hunting on a typical Midwest farm. The farm of 200 …

Preliminary Study Of Some Wyoming Paleozoic Carbonates, M. M. Riddler Tucker Jan 1966

Preliminary Study Of Some Wyoming Paleozoic Carbonates, M. M. Riddler Tucker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A preliminary petrologic investigation of some Paleozoic carbonates from the Wind River Range, Wyoming, has been conducted from thin section study revealing various rock fabrics and a preponderance of diagenetic alteration evidence. The limestones and dolostones are from five principal units: the Gros Ventre, Gallatin, Bighorn, Darby, and Madison formations. Three areas of study are considered. First, it has been found that rather uniform depositional conditions must have existed on this shelf with a decrease in depositional energy at or near the tops and/or bottoms of each system. Secondly, there appears to be a relatively strong correlation between secondary dolomite …

Macroscopic Invertebrates On The Higher Aquatic Plants At Clear Lake, Lowa, Roger J. Mrachek Jan 1966

Macroscopic Invertebrates On The Higher Aquatic Plants At Clear Lake, Lowa, Roger J. Mrachek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Macroscopic invertebrates were removed and counted from 355 samples of higher aquatic vegetation collected between 23 June 1965 and 3 September 1965 at Clear Lake, Iowa. It was found that all species of higher aquatic plants do not harbor the same populations of animals and that the composition of the macroscopic invertebrate populations on the plants showed a successional variation throughout the summer. A direct linear relationship was found between the surface areas of aquatic plants and the numbers of animals found on their surfaces.
