Depth Studies Of Wisconsin Loess In Southwestern Iowa: Iv. Shear Strength, N. S. Fox, R. A. Lohnes, R. L. Handy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This report is the fourth in a series of papers dealing with depth variations in the engineering properties of Wisconsin-age loess in Iowa. Previous studies have included graduation and in-place density (Davidson, et. al. 1953), clay and carbonate contents (Handy and Davidson, 1956), and organic matter, manganese and iron contents (Daniels et. al. 1960). This paper discusses the variation of the Coulomb shear strength parameters c (cohesive shear strength) and ø (angle of internal friction) in the loess in a cut located in N. W. 1/4 Sec. 3, T77N, R44W, Harrison County, Iowa. This cut was described in detail and …

The Effect Of A Nonionic Surface Active Agent On The Coprecipitation Of Potassium With Bas04, A. M. Ford, L. W. Marple Jan 1966

The Effect Of A Nonionic Surface Active Agent On The Coprecipitation Of Potassium With Bas04, A. M. Ford, L. W. Marple

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Studies were made of the effect of potassium concentration on the amount of potassium coprecipitation with BaSO4, and the effect of a surface active agent, Triton-X 100, on the coprecipitation of potassium with BaSO4. It was found that a log-log plot of concentration of KC1 in the solution phase vs the amount of potassium coprecipitated was linear indicating that the Freundlich adsorption isotherm was followed. This indicated that the amount of potassium coprecipitated was determined by adsorption on crystalline BaSO4. The addition of Triton-X 100 reduced the coprecipitation of potassium by as much as 20% but …

Management Of Natural Landscapes In Iowa: An Appraisal, Roger Q. Landers Jan 1966

Management Of Natural Landscapes In Iowa: An Appraisal, Roger Q. Landers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The management of natural landscapes must be based on well-defined objectives and sound operational techniques. Both of these have been lacking in many situations in Iowa. Examples are presented, and proposals are suggested for an effective program.

A Course In Conservation Of Natural Resources And Field Biology At Wartburg College, Elmer W. Hertel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A four semester hour course in Conservation and Field Biology is offered at Wartburg College. Two I-hour lecture periods and two 2-hour laboratory periods per week are required. The lecture periods deal with the conservation of natural resources and the laboratory periods with ecology, ecosystems and natural history. The relationship between conservation and ecology is stressed.

Void Ratio And Shear Strength Of Two Compacted Crushed Stones, Fernando H. Tinoco, Richard L. Handy, James M. Hoover Jan 1966

Void Ratio And Shear Strength Of Two Compacted Crushed Stones, Fernando H. Tinoco, Richard L. Handy, James M. Hoover

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Triaxial compression tests of two crushed limestones of differing highway service records indicate a fundamental difference in their shear strength-void ratio relationship. Analyses were based on stress parameters at minimum sample volume, i.e., before there was significant sample dilation due to shear. The better service record sample compacted to higher density, and had a high effective angle of internal friction and zero effective cohesion. The other sample compacted to lower density and had a lower friction angle, but gained significant stability from effective cohesion. Repeated loading-unloading cycles reduced the cohesion, apparently due to modification of the sample structure. Extrapolations of …

Ground Water Geology Of The U.S. Gypsum Company, Sperry Mine, Lyle V. A. Sendlein Jan 1966

Ground Water Geology Of The U.S. Gypsum Company, Sperry Mine, Lyle V. A. Sendlein

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The geology relating to the U. S. Gypsum Company Sperry Mine, Des Moines County, Iowa, is discussed. Maps of the bedrock configuration, structure, and bedrock geology are presented and reviewed in light of the ground water condition existing in the area. Criteria which could cause mine flooding are investigated and evaluated.

The Effect Of The Antithyroid Drug, Tapazole, On Chloride Exchange In White Rats, Herbert K. Brunkhorst

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Treatment of white rats with 0.1% methimazole (Tapazole), in distilled water brought about characteristic effects of antithyroid drugs on food intake, body weight, and organ weights, but, did not cause any apparent change in water balance and choride intake and output.

A Comparison Of Measures Of Finger Recognition, William F. Brewer Jan 1966

A Comparison Of Measures Of Finger Recognition, William F. Brewer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The relationship between the Benton tests of finger localization and the Kinsbourne-Warrington tests of finger differentiation and order was investigated. Kinsbourne and Warrington have stated that "finger sense" as tested by their tests and "finger localization" as tested by Benton's tests "cannot be closely compared.'' This hypothesis was tested by giving both tests to 31 mentally retarded subjects. There was a high significant correlation between the two tests. The findings do not support Kinsbourne and Warrington's hypothesis and suggest that it is not necessary to distinguish between "finger sense" and "finger localization.''

Biology Team Teaching At Wahlert, Bernice Ann Huberty Jan 1966

Biology Team Teaching At Wahlert, Bernice Ann Huberty

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Our own program had its remote beginning in the spring of 1961 following the North Central meeting in Chicago. Informal discussions and questions with faculty members found us having had no direct experience with team teaching nor were we familiar with schools using it. We began reading and discussing the then new book: FOCUS ON CHANGE - GUIDE TO BETTER SCHOOLS. An outgrowth of our discussions and a desire to learn resulted in trips to the Chicago area to attend seminars and observe teaching-teams in action.

Physico - Chemical Measurements Of Miller's Bay, Lake West Okoboji, Summer, 1964, G. Dennis Cooke Jan 1966

Physico - Chemical Measurements Of Miller's Bay, Lake West Okoboji, Summer, 1964, G. Dennis Cooke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this paper is to report on some physico-chemical measurements of Miller's Bay, Lake West Okoboji, made during summer, 1964, and to compare these measurements to some similar lakes. Lake West Okoboji, a large glacial lake, is located in northwest Iowa near the Minnesota border. Miller's Bay is small and is subjected to soil and domestic drainage. Measurements were made in April and at intervals from June to September. Samples were from 1 and 3 meter depths; depth at the sampling site was 8 meters. Water of the bay was hard and due primarily to magnesium, a situation …

Effects Of Verbal Pretraining On Star Discrimeter Performance With Unique Random Shapes As Stimuli, John T. Friar, Harve E. Rawson, Don Lewis Jan 1966

Effects Of Verbal Pretraining On Star Discrimeter Performance With Unique Random Shapes As Stimuli, John T. Friar, Harve E. Rawson, Don Lewis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

With two unique sets of random shapes as stimuli, one set for relevant, the other for irrelevant verbal pretraining, and with specially scaled concrete nouns as verbal responses, an experiment was designed as a possible check on Gibson's hypothesis concerning generalization among stimuli in paired-associates learning. Performance on the Star Discrimeter followed verbal pretraining. The errors made on the Star by one of the experimental groups, compared with the errors made by its control, lent some support for the hypothesis; but additional experimentation is needed.
