A Recording Cardiotachometer For Radio Capsules Implanted In Mammals With Data From Hibernating Mammals, Melissa Baker, G. Edgar Folk Jr., William Ashlock Jan 1966

A Recording Cardiotachometer For Radio Capsules Implanted In Mammals With Data From Hibernating Mammals, Melissa Baker, G. Edgar Folk Jr., William Ashlock

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Development in recent years of subdermally implanted radio transmitters has widened the scope of physiological research. The advantages of the telemetry method are that the animal is unrestrained in a large enclosure and can carry on its accustomed daily activities unhampered by wires, external sockets, or restraining lines.

Effect Of Ca-Montmorilionite Expansion On X-Ray Diffraction Lntensities, Donald Senich, T. Demirel, R. L. Handy Jan 1966

Effect Of Ca-Montmorilionite Expansion On X-Ray Diffraction Lntensities, Donald Senich, T. Demirel, R. L. Handy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The most abundant clay mineral group in Iowa soils is montmorillonite, most commonly calcium-saturated (Hanway et al. 1960). The calcium montmorillonite-water system was therefore selected for detailed X-ray study. Montmorillonite is unusual among minerals in that it has an expansible lattice in the c direction. That is, upon wetting with water, the individual silicate layers separate to allow entry of water, and the mineral expands. Characteristics of expansion are readily studied by means of X-ray diffraction: the X-ray diffraction angle gives the average layer-to-layer "d001" spacing for any given moisture condition; the sharpness of the diffraction peak is …

Historic Pennsylvanian Ammonoids From Iowa, W. M. Furnish, Claude Spinosa Jan 1966

Historic Pennsylvanian Ammonoids From Iowa, W. M. Furnish, Claude Spinosa

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Pennsylvanian goniatite species Wiedeyoceras sanctijohanis (Wiedey) was described in 1929 on the basis of two specimens from Greene County, Iowa, collected by O. H. St. John about 1865. An additional lot of specimens representing this species has been secured from a locality only about four miles northwest of the original site. The new material serves to give a better understanding of this fossil and a basis for comparison with comparable specimens from Missouri and elsewhere.

The Status Of Chemistry In The State Of Iowa In 1965 - 1966, Verne Troxel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The status of new and old chemistry courses in the State of Iowa is investigated in terms of grade level, average class size, the number of students in various classifications of chemistry classes, non-credit courses, time allotted to chemistry courses, vocational versus non-vocational courses, and required versus non-required courses. Sharp differences in various types of chemistry are noted throughout all of the above areas of investigation.

Factors Affecting The Structure And Distribution Of Terrestrial Pulmonata, Charles G. Atkins Jan 1966

Factors Affecting The Structure And Distribution Of Terrestrial Pulmonata, Charles G. Atkins

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Soil CaCO3 levels were determined for six ecosystems in Washtenaw and Wayne Counties, Michigan and in Linn County, Iowa; and correlation between these results and the shell thickness of certain terrestrial snails was made. Species used were Anguispira alternata (Say), Triodopsis multilineata (Say), and T. albolabris (Say). Two ecosystems had high CaCO3 levels (120-144 ppm), three had intermediate levels (93-99 ppm) and one had a low level (40 ppm). Width/thickness ratios of live and cast shells showed that those in high calcium ecosystems had thicker shells than those in low calcium ecosystems, though there were large deviations in …

Notes On The Status And Teaching Of Vertebrate Comparative Anatomy And Embryology In European Universities, Karl E. Goellner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During six months in Europe and Great Britain inquiry was made at 35 universities as to the status of vertebrate comparative anatomy and embryology in undergraduate curricula. People directly involved in teaching these courses were interviewed. Wide variation in programs was found, with evidence of a de-emphasis of morphology in many institutions.

Further Test For The Identity Of "Dysoptic" With "Blind" In Mice, Margaret L. Watson Jan 1966

Further Test For The Identity Of "Dysoptic" With "Blind" In Mice, Margaret L. Watson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The embryos of two mutant stocks of mice, "Dysoptic" and "Blind", were studied. Both mutations are dominant, and lethal when homozygous. The homozygous embryos of each individual stock as well as those of “Dysoptic" by "Blind" matings die at the same stage of development and show a similar pattern of retarded growth. It appears that the mutations are identical.

Helminth Parasites Of Rails And Host-Parasite Relationships Of The Trematode Protechinostoma Mucronisertulatum, Bryce C. Redington, Martin J. Ulmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a survey of 15 soras (Porzana carolina) and 31 Virginia rails (Rallus limicola) collected in Iowa during May-September 1963, Protechinostoma mucronisertulatum was the most frequently encountered trematode of the sora. It does not occur in the Virginia rail. Experimentally-developed metacercariae and adults were obtained and host-parasite relationships studied with special reference to annual incidence of infection in snails. Additional helminths of the sora and the Virginia rail include several representing new host records.

Junior High Science As A Foundation, Leona K. Adler

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Science programs designed for junior high school are usually based upon the assumption that this level includes grades 7, 8 and 9 - although, of course other types of groupings have been explored. We must also recognize the assumption that junior high school science is neither the first nor the last exposure of students to science.

An Analysis Of Personality Characteristics And Attitudes Of High School Girls Filing Excuses From Physical Education, Jo Ann Catherine Kramer Jan 1966

An Analysis Of Personality Characteristics And Attitudes Of High School Girls Filing Excuses From Physical Education, Jo Ann Catherine Kramer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Physical educators are concerned with the attitudes held by their students toward physical education as a class activity. One main reason for this concern is that activities learned in high school physical education class are hopefully carried over into adult life to aid the individual in maintaining hie level of total fitness. In order to obtain the full benefits of a comprehensive physical education program a student must actively participate in the program. A negative attitude toward physical education activity or toward the class can affect an individual's degree of participation. Physical educators usually feel that an individual who does …

Investigation Of The Cis-Trans Isomers Of Tetrachlorodiaquorhodate (Iii) Anion, Kenneth Lee Bridges

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A coordination compound, or complex, is formed when an atom, molecule, or ion unites by donating a pair of electrons with another atom, molecule, or ion able to accept the pair. In metal .coordination compounds, a metal-ion is the electron pair acceptor and usually is able to accept more than one pair. The number of electron-pairs which can be used in bonding is called the coordination number. The donor atom, molecule, or ion is called a ligand.

The purpose of this study was to determine (1) if there was a low standard of rhythmic response in certain fourth, fifth, and sixth grade pupils in the Hartley (Iowa) Community School; (2) if it was possible to construct a diagnostic instrument which would identify the specific areas of weakness which may contribute to the low standard of rhythmic response in these students; and (3) if the results obtained from the administration of the diagnostic instrument would enable the writer to make recommendations for teaching methods and materials which may correct the deficiencies found.

The Shift In Focus From The Group To The Individual In The Later Novels Of John Steinbeck, Sandra Lee Gabel Jan 1966

The Shift In Focus From The Group To The Individual In The Later Novels Of John Steinbeck, Sandra Lee Gabel

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

John Steinbeck demonstrates a shift from the group hero, in some of his earlier novels, to the individual hero in his later novels. It is evident that in East of Eden and The Winter of Our Discontent Steinbeck is more concerned with the individual human being than he was in such earlier novels as Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. A contrast with two novels which fall in an earlier period, 1940 and before, will clarify the development of the individual man as hero in Steinbeck's later novels. Steinbeck changes his emphasis from the group, in Of …
