Why Teach Earth Science In Our Secondary Schools?, Raymon E. Bisque

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Inspection of recent changes in science teaching at the secondary school level reveals two distinct trends: a rejection of outmoded general science courses and an increase in laboratory emphasis.

Differentiation Of Drift Topographies By Statistical Analysis Of Slope Data, Barbara Thomas, Sherwood D. Tuttle Jan 1967

Differentiation Of Drift Topographies By Statistical Analysis Of Slope Data, Barbara Thomas, Sherwood D. Tuttle

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study is an investigation of slope development by statistical analysis of slope angle, slope length, relief and stream gradient data developed on four different glacial drift deposits in Iowa. Measurement from randomly selected points on 1:24,000 topographic maps provide the data. Analysis of variance is used with both F-ratios and between-group t-tests. Differences from comparisons based on the age of the different glacial drifts were found to be significant for all parameters. Significant differences were also found for some of the variables in comparisons based on physiographic classification, stream order of the nearest stream, and orientation …

The Eyes Of Lsotelus And Nileus, J. N. Rose Jan 1967

The Eyes Of Lsotelus And Nileus, J. N. Rose

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Facet counts and measurements indicate that growth in the holochroal eyes of Isotelus iowensis and Nileus vigilans is accomplished by addition of new facets at the base, probably during molting, and by increase in the size of the largest facets; the former is the dominant process. The rate of addition of facets appears to be non-uniform in many individuals.

The Effects Of Exercise On Lung Ventilation And Breathing Rate, Edward Schwenke Jan 1967

The Effects Of Exercise On Lung Ventilation And Breathing Rate, Edward Schwenke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Breathing rates and ventilatory data obtained from young subjects of college age during exercise conditions imposed by riding a bicycle ergometer and using standard physiological laboratory equipment and a polygraph indicate that this type of study is feasible during standard laboratory experiences.

Learning Of Random Shapes And Two Unique Sets Of Concrete Nouns, Don Lewis, William O. Phinney, Maryhelen H. Posey, Karen S. Horr Jan 1967

Learning Of Random Shapes And Two Unique Sets Of Concrete Nouns, Don Lewis, William O. Phinney, Maryhelen H. Posey, Karen S. Horr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In paired-associates learning, ten random shapes were used as stimuli and two sets of concrete nouns as responses. One set of nouns was high in descriptive appropriateness, da, the other set low. Two different groups learned the two combinations. Later, two additional groups learned with the pairings scrambled. Still later, a replication was made. The replication yielded results which, in most ways, were basically like those obtained originally; but there was an important exception that was related to the learning of the scrambled pairs for nouns of low da value.

The Reversed Upper Central Series In The Polarization Process In Groups, Donald Harry Pilgrim Jan 1967

The Reversed Upper Central Series In The Polarization Process In Groups, Donald Harry Pilgrim

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Let G be a group and {Zn} be the upper central series of G. If Zn = G for some positive integer n and if c is the least such positive integer, we define a chain, {Ki}, of subgroups of G by

(a) Ki = Zc - i + 1 if 1 ≤ i ≤ c,

(b) Ki= {1} if i ≥ c + 1.

We shall call the chain {Ki} the reversed upper central series of G.

The measuring instrument used was the Test On Understanding Science (TOUS), Cooley & Klopfer 1961. The science teachers were compared with groups of secondary students in grades seven through twelve.
