Influence Of Gibberellic Acid And Indole-3-Acetic Acid On The Morphology And Population Dynamics Of Eudorina Elegans, E. Russell Tepaske, Dale Robert Frank Jan 1967

Influence Of Gibberellic Acid And Indole-3-Acetic Acid On The Morphology And Population Dynamics Of Eudorina Elegans, E. Russell Tepaske, Dale Robert Frank

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Assuming optical density to be a function of population density, colorimetric techniques were used to determine the effects of two growth regulator substances, indole-3-acetic acid and gibberellic acid, on the morphology and population dynamics of Eudorina elegans. A tube of culture medium without organisms was used as a reference point to calibrate the colorimeter. Chemically-treated cultures and soil-water control cultures were compared to the reference reading and growth curves were plotted. Colony counts were made at the termination of the experiment and comparisons were made with the colorimeter readings. Results demonstrated gibberellic acid to be a promoter of cell division …

Propylene Oxide Sterilization Of Media Containing Bacterial Populations, Micheal J. Naylon, Robert C. Goss Jan 1967

Propylene Oxide Sterilization Of Media Containing Bacterial Populations, Micheal J. Naylon, Robert C. Goss

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Propylene oxide sterilization of media containing soil bacterial populations occurred after 11 hours exposure in a closed system. Population reaction to the sterilant was characterized by inhibition intervals in the sterilization process. These stages represent minimal survival rates of 70%, 40%, and 7% respectively. A sterilization threshold (less than 1% survivors) occurred between 8-10 hours. Homogenous populations of Bacillus subtilis showed survival values in the first inhibition interval until the 4th hour. Lethality was noted at the 5th hour of exposure and other stages observed in heterogeneous populations did not occur.

Stability Trends For The Lanthanides On Dowex A-1 Chelating Resin, C. E. Lang, G. J. Schrobilgen Jan 1967

Stability Trends For The Lanthanides On Dowex A-1 Chelating Resin, C. E. Lang, G. J. Schrobilgen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Distribution coefficients have been determined for a number of trivalent lanthanide ions on an ion exchange resin containing N-benzyliminodiacetic acid groups. At pH 2.00, μ=0.100 and 25.00°C. the relative stability trends for lanthanum through neodymium were found to be in agreement with trends previously observed with iminodiacetic acid N-methyliminodiacetic acid and N-benzyliminodiacetic acid. Beyond neodymium the distribution coefficient sequence of lanthanide-resin chelates is inverted. On the basis of the distribution coefficients, the inverted elution sequences previously reported in the literature for lanthanum and lutetium on the resin can be explained. A number of plausible explanations for the trends observed can …

Movements Of Pheasants In Central Lowa, David L. Lyon Jan 1967

Movements Of Pheasants In Central Lowa, David L. Lyon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of pheasant movements in central Iowa during 1961-4 indicated that pheasants tended to move greater distances in spring as they dispersed from winter concentration areas than at other times of the year. Movements during this period averaged 0.9 mile. During the winter, movements were much more restricted, averaging only 0.2 mile; however, this may have been due in part to the unusually severe weather conditions that prevailed during the particular winter in which movements were studied. Compared with other areas in the Iowa and Midwest pheasant range, there appeared no detectable differences in the length or type of …

Comparison Of Channel Catfish Populations In Channeled And Unchanneled Sections Of The Little Sioux River, Iowa, Bill D. Welker Jan 1967

Comparison Of Channel Catfish Populations In Channeled And Unchanneled Sections Of The Little Sioux River, Iowa, Bill D. Welker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Comparisons are made of channel catfish in channeled and unchanneled sections of the Little Sioux River with regard to abundance, movement, and age and growth. Mean catches per unit effort of channel catfish were higher during May to October bi-weekly periods in the unchanneled section. Movement was predominantly downstream in both areas. In the unchanneled section 23.7% moved upstream, 69.6% moved downstream, and 6.7% were recaptured at their release site. In the channeled area 25.8% moved upstream, 39.8% moved downstream and 34.4% were recaptured at their release site. Due to the free exchange of catfish between both areas, growth rates …

Polished sections and thin sections were made of selected samples and were studied by use of binocular and petrographic microscopes. Sample cuttings from selected wells in east-central Iowa were studied for the presence of Bertram lithologies. An isopachous and paleogeologic map of Bertram strata was prepared from the data obtained from surface and subsurface samples. Prior to Bertram deposition east-central Iowa was exposed to subaerial erosion. The first sediments of the Middle Devonian transgressive sea were deposited on a supratidal mudflat …

Temperature Variation With Input Power In An Electrical Furnace, Virgil Banowetz Jan 1967

Temperature Variation With Input Power In An Electrical Furnace, Virgil Banowetz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Temperature control of an electrical furnace is generally accomplished by means of a servo mechanism. For simple laboratory experiments, however, it may be desirable to produce a selected temperature rise by manual control of a variac or rheostat. A procedure is offered here for producing a linear temperature rise in a furnace at desired points called temperature controlled points. A power function dependent only on time and/or temperature is used. This function is a correspondence of current needed in the coil (to produce the desired temperature rise) versus time and/or temperature.

Tetrapolar Heterothallism In The Basidiomycete, Lentodium Squamulosum, Albert D. Robinson, Martin A. Rosinski Jan 1967

Tetrapolar Heterothallism In The Basidiomycete, Lentodium Squamulosum, Albert D. Robinson, Martin A. Rosinski

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lentodium squamulosum has been shown to be tetrapolarly heterothallic. The 4 predicted mating reactions can be recognized by gross characters on Potato dextrose agar, but not on other media tested. Three sectors were found, 2 of which do not seem to dikaryotize with any of the 4 established mating types. Malt extract would appear to yield more consistent fruiting than Oat flake agar.

The Performance Of Trained And Untrained Listeners In Rating Defective /R/ Along A Continuum, Mary Ann Dostal Jan 1967

The Performance Of Trained And Untrained Listeners In Rating Defective /R/ Along A Continuum, Mary Ann Dostal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Modification of deviant speech patterns begins with identification of the factors responsible for the deviancy. Agreement between speech clinicians (trained listeners) and parents and teachers (untrained listeners) on the nature of errors may be important in a successful clinical services program. Previous studies investigated differences between trained and untrained listeners in the number of "correct-incorrect" decisions they made about speech sounds. This study dealt with the ability of listeners to rate defective /r/ sounds along a r--w continuum. Two groups of listeners were used; a trained group made up of twelve graduate speech clinicians enrolled in a summer session at …

The Implications Of The Sex Discrimination Provisions Of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 Upon Seniority At The Rath Packing Company, Waterloo, Iowa, Robert Harry Beener Jan 1967

The Implications Of The Sex Discrimination Provisions Of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 Upon Seniority At The Rath Packing Company, Waterloo, Iowa, Robert Harry Beener

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a controversial law making discrimination by sex unlawful. Compliance with Title VII presented problems for The Rath Packing Company as well as the meat packing industry in general. Use of separate seniority lists for assigning males and females to jobs had been a long time practice in the meat packing industry, but such lists became unlawful July 2, 1965. The problem of merging separate seniority lists into one list for both sexes, and then using the new single seniority list to assign jobs to those being discriminated against, was difficult …

A Survey Of In-Service Education Techniques In Self-Contained Junior High Schools In The State Of Iowa, Robert Dean Eastman Jan 1967

A Survey Of In-Service Education Techniques In Self-Contained Junior High Schools In The State Of Iowa, Robert Dean Eastman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The rapid evolution of junior high schools and their incorporation into school organizations throughout Iowa has created a demand for teachers who are particularly adept in working with adolescents, who understand the transitionary nature of young students, and who are conscious of the exploratory nature of the junior high school program. Few institutions of higher learning in the mid-west region, however, specifically include the junior high major in their pre-service preparation of teachers, A strong in-service educational program, then, is essential for the improvement of the instructional program.

Studies On Streptomycin Effects In Arabidopsis Thaliana (L.) Heynh, Sujit K. Dhar Jan 1967

Studies On Streptomycin Effects In Arabidopsis Thaliana (L.) Heynh, Sujit K. Dhar

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Bleaching (interference with the production and/or accumulation of potentially green tissues) of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh by Streptomycin (SM) is followed by severe inhibition of expansion of leaves, elongation of stem internodes, coleoptiles and roots. Arabidopsis shows no enhancement of growth when sugar is supplied to the medium, and it was found that Gibberellic acid has an antagonistic effect on growth inhibition of SM. Seeds germinated in darkness in SM-containing medium when subcultured on SM-free medium in darkness and transferred to light, turned green normally. Seeds germinated in light in SM-containing medium stay bleached permanently, even after subculturing in SM-free …

The sociological relationship of the lone bull to the bison herd was also observed.

Reproductive Systems In Chelone Glabra Var. Glabra, T. S. Cooperrider Jan 1967

Reproductive Systems In Chelone Glabra Var. Glabra, T. S. Cooperrider

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The results of a series of experiments and field observations indicate that bumble bees are the chief pollinators of Chelone glabra L. var. glabra, but that their activity may lead frequently to geitonogamy and less often to xenogamy. Flowers from which corollas were removed failed to attract bees and did not produce seed. Flowers that were unaltered but shielded from insect visitation also failed to produce seed. Seeds were produced on plants cross-pollinated by hand. Seeds were also produced after pollination of stigmas with pollen from their own inflorescence. This facultative geitonogamy is likely a contributing factor to the geographical …

A Conductometric Study Of The Reaction Velocity Of Halodinitrobenzene With Piperidine, F. Emmitt Jacob, Terrill R. Berkland Jan 1967

A Conductometric Study Of The Reaction Velocity Of Halodinitrobenzene With Piperidine, F. Emmitt Jacob, Terrill R. Berkland

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The rates of reaction for 1-chloro-, 1-bromo-, and l-iodo-2,4-dinitrobenzene and piperidine in 95% ethanol were determined for various concentrations and temperatures by a conductometric process. An RC-18 Conductivity Bridge with an oscilloscope detector was found to be very satisfactory in the study. The specific rate constants gave the halogen reaction series Cl > Br >> I at all temperatures and concentrations used. The conductometric method for determining reaction velocities has shown itself to be very effective since it allows continuous monitoring of the system thereby eliminating the necessity of a chemical analysis.
