Quantitative Variations In Loess Topography, R. A. Lohnes, R. C. Joshi Jan 1967

Quantitative Variations In Loess Topography, R. A. Lohnes, R. C. Joshi

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Morphometric studies were conducted on the "loess mantled" and "loess depositional" topographies of the Wisconsin Age loess of western Iowa. Slope angle and absolute drainage density decrease with increasing distance from the Missouri River as a power function. The rate of decrease of both parameters is great for the first 8 miles from the river and less for the next 24 miles. Although the change between the two types of topography is gradual, it is suggested that the transition from rapid to more gentle decrease of slope angle or drainage density with distance from the river be used as a …

The Movement Of Chloride And Nitrate Through Certain Iowa Soils, John C. Corey, Don Kirkham, Donald R. Nielsen Jan 1967

The Movement Of Chloride And Nitrate Through Certain Iowa Soils, John C. Corey, Don Kirkham, Donald R. Nielsen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Miscible displacement experiments were conducted to determine the influence of soil type on the movement of chloride and nitrate. The movement of NO" - is important in plant nutrition; Cl-, in soil salinity. In these experiments, 100 ml of an aqueous solution containing 0.55 g of CaC12 and 0.35 g of Ca(NO3)24H2O was displaced through 30-cm long soil columns with 0.01N CaSO4. Breakthrough curves, plots of the chloride or nitrate concentrations found in the effluent against the volume of effluent collected, were made. Breakthrough curves from columns of Webster, …

The following is a report by CCP Staff Physicist Ben A. Green, Jr., on leave from Western Reserve University, who recently visited several institutions which have been unusually successful in producing high school teachers of physics.
