The Bedrock Configuration Of Iowa, Lyle V. A. Sendlein
The Bedrock Configuration Of Iowa, Lyle V. A. Sendlein
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A review of bedrock topographic mapping of Iowa indicates that less than half of the state has been mapped. A map compiled primarily from the published literature of the bedrock configuration of Iowa and segments of the adjacent states of Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri and Nebraska suggests that the bedrock valley pattern parallels modern drainage as hypothesized by Kay and Apfel, in 1928. An unpublished map by Hale (1950) captured major valley trends remarkably well for the limited amount of data available. Studies of the bedrock surface by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Iowa Geological Survey and …
Visual Information Coding By Nerve Impulse Patterns, D R. T. Walker, N. R. Carlson, S. S. Fox
Visual Information Coding By Nerve Impulse Patterns, D R. T. Walker, N. R. Carlson, S. S. Fox
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Microelectrode recordings of single cells were obtained from the visual cortices of twenty acutely prepared curarized cats. A 500 msec light stimulus was presented for 150 trials at inter-flash intervals of 1.3, 2.0, 2.5, 3.2 and 4.0 seconds. The post stimulus time histograms of cells responding with an accelerated firing to stimulus onset encoded the inter-stimulus interval by an increased firing during the second of three 166 msec periods during the stimulus. The firing at light offset and after did not encode inter-stimulus intervals.

Discrimination Weighting On A Multiple Choice Exam, Timothy J. Gannon, Thomas Sannito
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A multiple choice test (59 items) was given to 141 sophomore males as a final examination in General Psychology. The students were required to indicate their degree of confidence on each item by writing to the left of their answer a 1 (pure guess), a 2 (some guessing-some certainty), or a 3 (complete certainty). The scoring involved making the confidence values positive or negative according to whether the selected answers were correct or incorrect. Three scoring procedures were then compared by correlation techniques to determine if there were any major shifts in student ranking. It was found that by scoring …

A Comparison Of Two Vannella Species, Robert F. Mote
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Two species of Vannella from a freshwater pond were cultured in distilled water, alfalfa, rice medium and described. Both species had a cyst form, radiate form, and trophic form. One, Vannella multimorpha sp. nov., was distinct in that large uni- and bi-nucleated Vannella were formed during the life cycle. From the large trophic Vannella multimorpha small amoebae buds were developed. Illustrations of the life cycle and microphotographs of this new species are represented.

Some Coelozoic Myxosporida From New Zealand Fishes Ii. On A New Genus Of Myxosporida, Auerhachia, Paul A. Meglitsch
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Auerbachia, a new genus of Myxosporida, is characterized. Two new species, belonging to this genus, are described. Auerbachia anomald n. sp. is reported from the gall bladder of Genypterus blacodes, and Auerbachia monstrosa n. sp. from the gall bladder of Coelorhynchus australis. All infected hosts were taken by trawler working out of Wellington, New Zealand.
Application Of Cost And Value Comparisons To Iowa Wildlife, Harlan D. Cook
Application Of Cost And Value Comparisons To Iowa Wildlife, Harlan D. Cook
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
There is an increasing demand for methods to determine wildlife values and costs in order to allow comparisons with marketed goods which compete with wildlife for funds and resources. For relatively small changes in the total wildlife supply, estimation of the value of this increment in supply should be compared with the associated costs for the increment in supply. Statewide average values and costs are usually meaningless in this type of comparison. It is advocated that better estimates of changes in wildlife abundance caused by government and private activities will provide much useful information even with the limited economic information …

Distribution And Habitat Of The Red Squirrel, Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus, In The North Central States, G. Robert Lynch, G. Edgar Folk Jr.
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A survey of the distribution and habitat of the red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) was conducted in northern Iowa, southern Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The results indicate that the present range of the red squirrel in Iowa covers the north central counties of the state, and is considerably smaller than that given in earlier surveys. The Iowa red squirrel lives in immature hardwood forests near rivers and lakes. If mature trees arc present, they are used for nesting and caching food. The preferred foods of the Iowa red squirrel are the black walnut (Juglans nigra) and the butternut (Juglans cinerea). In Wisconsin …

Effect Of Multiple Medication On Hemoglohlin Content In Tranquilized Mice, Lester C. Shell, G. Dixon, T. Wyne, C. Nordstrom, J. Augustine, J. Heynen
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Varying doses of medication were given tranquilized white mice. The hemoglobin content was measured by means of a Spectronic 20 colorimeter, using the Cannan chemical technique, with percent transmittance from colorimeter reading plotted against concentration grams per hemoglobin per 100 ml. blood of the standard. Comparison of length of medication, dosage, sex of animals, age of animals, and length of time on tranquilizer before medication was started recorded. Included in medication were varying amounts of sex hormones, and effects noted.
Physiological Observations On Raccoons In Winter, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Karen B. Coady, Mary A. Folk
Physiological Observations On Raccoons In Winter, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Karen B. Coady, Mary A. Folk
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Body temperatures were recorded earlier from raccoons tethered outdoors in extreme cold. There was no suppression in body temperature. Later, two events suggested a new study, this time on heart rates: (1) the development of implantable radio-capsules for heart rate and EKG, and (2) the information that bears develop a bradycardia in the winter den, slowing sleeping heart rates from 40 b/m to 8-15 b/m. Three raccoons were studied periodically in outdoor dens in midwinter with Iowa implanted radio-capsules. Unlike the bears, when the raccoons stayed indoors for several days due to severe weather, their sleeping heart rates went up, …

Properties Of Lntervalence Antimony Bromides, M. L. Hackert, S. L. Lawton, R. A. Jacobson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Monovalent organic amines; R+, have been used to synthesize 15 intensely colored salts of composition RxSbyBrz. It is believed that the dark color may be due to the presence of mixed oxidation states of antimony or to some other type of charge transfer phenomena. Preliminary X-ray investigations and density measurements demonstrate that the ratio R:Sb:Br is cation dependent. Such ratios as 3:2:12, 4:2:12, and 2:1:9 have been observed and imply that the presumed Sb(III) and Sb(V) atoms do not necessarily occupy pseudo-equivalent positions in the unit cell. The temperature dependence of the …

Plankton Of A Variable Level Flood Control Reservoir, Donald J. Schmidt
Plankton Of A Variable Level Flood Control Reservoir, Donald J. Schmidt
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The increased number of flood-control dams constructed on rivers in recent years have created impoundments with physical and biological conditions that are at best poorly understood. A flood-control reservoir does not have normal lake conditions. The most apparent difference is the drastic changes in water level during flood control operations. The great majority of limnological studies have been conducted on natural lakes and the data apply only in a general way to the study of artificial reservoirs. Many of the investigations are concerned with only the summer months. As a consequence, our over-all concept of year-'round ecological conditions in reservoirs …

Anthocyanin Pigments In The Genus Lobelia: I. Pigments In Lobelia Cardinalis L. And L. Siphilitica L., S. Lane Wilson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The corollas of L. cardinalis and L. siphilitica were extracted in 1 percent HCl in methanol for 24 hours. This extract (10 ml. portions) was streaked on 3 mm. Whatman filterpaper. The filterpaper was placed in a large chromatographic tank in a solvent system of n-butanol: acetic acid: water (4:1:5 v/v). After separation the bands were cut out and the pigment from each band eluted in a solution of 0.01 percent HCI in methanol. These solutions were then reduced in volume under vacuum and the absorption spectrum of each pigment determined. Aliquots of the crude extract was also spotted on …
Spotted Skunk And Weasel Populations Den And Cover Usage By Northeast Iowa, Emmett Polder
Spotted Skunk And Weasel Populations Den And Cover Usage By Northeast Iowa, Emmett Polder
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Examination of dens and territories of 118 Mustela frenata, 59 Mustela rixosa, and 65 Spilogale interrupta, in northeast Iowa indicated that tall grass, hay meadow, and brush-bramble-weed growth at field edges were the favorite habitats of the three species. Black willows were attractive to Spilogale and M. Jrenata. M. rixosa was most tolerant of sparse cover. Spilogale and M. frenata preferred burrows of Franklin ground squirrels and pocket gophers for primary den sites. M. rixosa favored mole runs and Blarina burrows for den sites. The present trend to continuous corn, reduced hay acreage, removal of permanent fences, and use of …

Age And Growth Of Bluegills, Lepomis Macrochirus Ra:Finesque, From Selected Central Iowa Farm Ponds, Jerome V. Shireman
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Population estimates were made on five farm ponds in central Iowa during 1965. Age and growth determinations were made from scales of 638 bluegills collected from these ponds. Bluegills standing crops averaged 248 pounds per acre, ranging from 201 to 321 pounds per acre. Growth rates of bluegills from the balanced ponds were average when compared with growth rates of bluegills from other Iowa lakes and ponds.

The Double Helix is a brief story of the structure of the genetic material DNA. As such, it is exceedingly valuable to the historian of science. But another, somewhat irreverent aspect of the book, to be discussed later in this review, makes it an important document for the general reader as well and one that deserves wide reading.
Flexible-Modular Scheduling With The Slow Learner, Eugene Balk
Flexible-Modular Scheduling With The Slow Learner, Eugene Balk
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
At Mason City High School this year something new has been added in the biology curriculum. It is part of the New Design, better known as Phase II Flex. Approximately 160 sophomores are in the program and are known as low achievers for various reasons. One of the reasons is that they are no longer interested in school. The lack of interest may be due to the traditional school day (fifty-five minutes, six periods a day) or to the fact that the students have never achieved success in anything they have attempted in school.

Variation Among Participants In The Count Of Calls Of Cock Pheasants, Paul A. Vohs Jr., Dale Hein
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Analysis of variance of counts of calls of male ringnecked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in Iowa revealed highly significant differences among 16 persons on the same 10-station route on the same morning. Differences up to 15 minutes in starting time of observers had no significant effect on counts.

Survival, Reproductive Success, And Spread Of Introduced Rio Grande Turkeys In Northeast Iowa, Dennis D. Wigal, Arnold O. Haugen
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Thirty-nine Rio Grande wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia) from Texas were introduced in the Yellow River State Forest, Allamakee County, Iowa, in the winter of 1960-61. The population was studied in three northeastern Iowa counties from June, 1966, through September, 1967; concentrated field studies were centered in and near the Paint Creek Unit of the forest. Adult turkeys appeared to tolerate the northeastern Iowa climate well, but poults may not be so tolerant. Although reproduction has occurred each year since the introduction, poult survival seemingly has been sporadic, possibly because of differences in weather conditions during the rearing seasons. …

A Consideration Of Pollen, Diatoms And Other Remains In Postglacial Sediments, John D. Dodd, Ruth M. Webster, Gary Collins, Larry Wehr
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The significance of pollen and diatoms in post-glacial sediments from a shallow bay of Lake Okoboji, Iowa, is considered. The presence of other microfossils is noted with emphasis on those of Cretaceous origin: foraminifera, coccoliths, radiolarians, and hystrichosphaerids. Problems encountered and discussed include recognition of Chrysophyte statospores, redeposition, interpretation of data from lower levels, and reliability of radiocarbon dates applied to organic matter from aquatic vegetation.
The Pleistocene Of Iowa: An Engineering Appraisal, R. L. Handy
The Pleistocene Of Iowa: An Engineering Appraisal, R. L. Handy
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Pleistocene deposits from wind, water and ice dominate the soil engineering in Iowa. For foundation engineering the in situ properties of soils must be evaluated, the most pertinent properties being shear strength and compressibility. Alternately if the soil is to be used as a construction material, for example in embankment or earth dam construction, disturbed properties such as grain size and plasticity are utilized and are reflected in engineering classification. The shear strength, compressibility, and engineering classification of the various types of Pleistocene and Recent deposits in Iowa are presented and discussed, and examples of the use of shear strength …
