Acceptance Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus By Established Tomato Root Cultures, Valerie Halverson Jan 1968

Acceptance Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus By Established Tomato Root Cultures, Valerie Halverson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

With Haberlandt's idea of cultivating individual cells in vitro, cell tissue culture began in 1902. Sporadic work was done in this area through the ensuing years. However, it was not until White's cultivation of tomato roots for an indefinite time span in 1934 that culture study became significant. Most work has been oriented toward the study of the growth and function of the cell. The research has included various nutritional and environmental studies. The proposition of this research is to use established technique for culturing tomato roots in order to go a step further, and use these cultures to study …

Twenty-Five Years As A Starter?, Warren Classon Jan 1968

Twenty-Five Years As A Starter?, Warren Classon

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The National Science Teachers Association will celebrate its twenty-fifth birthday early in 1969. Your reaction to this announcement of a Silver Symposium event may be somewhat passive. A twenty-fifth birthday, like any anniversary, really has little meaning unless it includes achievement. A look at something of NSTA's history and activities should determine the significance of the event.

Fall-To-Winter And Winter Movements Of Pheasants In Lowa, Allan L. Egbert Jan 1968

Fall-To-Winter And Winter Movements Of Pheasants In Lowa, Allan L. Egbert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) movements were studied in south-central Hamilton County, Iowa, during the fall and winter of 1966-67. Fall-to-winter movements of 23 pheasants averaged 0.66 mile. The greatest movement recorded was 2.45 miles. There was no evidence of oriented movement either in direction or to specific wintering areas. The mean winter movement of 43 pheasants was 0.20 mile (based on 149 observations). There was no obvious difference in winter movement of flocks associated with distinct wintering areas. Few pheasants moved between wintering areas after winter flocks were formed

Fishes Of Little Wall Lake, 1967, Roger D. Albertson, Fred Schultz Jan 1968

Fishes Of Little Wall Lake, 1967, Roger D. Albertson, Fred Schultz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Little Wall Lake, Hamilton County, Iowa, was dredged in 1953 to increase recreational facilities. Counts in June-August 1967 averaged about 580 man-hours of boating and water skiing per acre, mostly in the 65-acre dredged portion, but sometimes in other parts of the 273-acre lake. The lake also provides about 580 man-hours of fishing per week. Most of the fish are black bullheads (Ictalurus melas) and crappies (Pomoxis annutlaris and P. nigromaculatus), 5 to 6 inches long, and too small to be kept by most fishermen. The angler catch of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), bluegills (Lepomis macrochirus), and other games fish …

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, And Moisture Contents In A Small Loess Watershed In Tama County, Lowa, W. J. Vreeken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A traverse across a small first-order watershed in loess has been studied. The loess is Wisconsin in age and has a vertical tripartition that can be explained on a regional basis. Clear stratification is present in the middle loess increment. Moisture distribution patterns correlate highly with differences in particle-size distribution. The explanatory physical phenomena must be moisture-tension relationships.

Pedo-Geomorphic Elements Of The Channel And Floodplain Of A Small Nebraska Watershed, William H. Allen Jr. Jan 1968

Pedo-Geomorphic Elements Of The Channel And Floodplain Of A Small Nebraska Watershed, William H. Allen Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pedologic and geomorphic data are combined in this study in an effort to delineate the areal extent of floodplains and possible extent of overbank flooding. Hydraulically, this procedure may prove most useful in studying flood routing problems on ungaged watersheds; however, it may be applied to previously studied catchments in an effort to define more accurately the areas of localized inflow and/or major hydrologic changes which may be expected to occur in a down-valley direction.

Iieal Glucose Absorption After Jejunectomy In The Rat, William M. Kelly, Gordon W. Searle Jan 1968

Iieal Glucose Absorption After Jejunectomy In The Rat, William M. Kelly, Gordon W. Searle

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Eleven male rats were subjected to jejunectomy under ether anesthesia with end-to-end intestinal anastomosis. After recovery they were allowed to eat ad libitum and growth was little impaired. An in vivo test of absorptive capacity for glucose was applied to the surviving ileum of the jejunectomized animals and to the corresponding segment of ileum in eleven untreated rats. The correlation coefficient for the body weight and the amount of glucose absorbed from a Krebs-Ringer-bicarbonate solution containing 16 to 17 μmol/ml (300 mg. percent) glucose in all animals was 0.45. Accordingly, absorption of glucose and of fluid volume was expressed as …

I feel moved to call to your attention an item from Mr. Jackson's article in the February issue of The Iowa Science Teachers' Journal, "A Method of Teaching Evolution in High School." Though it is not the major area of the article's discussion, the author's treatment of the Earth's origin irritated me.

Fortifying Laboratory Inquiry Through The Use Of Scientific Articles, Bernard W. Benson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Using scientific articles in teaching is in itself no innovation. Baumel and Berger (1965) provided an excellent approach to this task. I find no argument with the format they proposed. However, I do question their statement which follows concerning student outcomes from such experiences.

The Epidermis Of The Blade Joint Of Sorghum Bicolor (L.) Moench, Kit-Wah Lee, Robert C. Lommasson Jan 1968

The Epidermis Of The Blade Joint Of Sorghum Bicolor (L.) Moench, Kit-Wah Lee, Robert C. Lommasson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The epidermis of several strains of cultivated sorghums were examined microscopically by means of epidermal casts and macerated leaf samples. One variety was examined at several stations in the sheath, blade joint and blade. An account of cell types, their sizes, and their distribution is given for both sheath and blade, and are compared with those of the blade joint. The long-cells of the outer surface of the blade joint are shorter than in other parts of the leaf, silica-bodies are exclusively cross-shaped, and stomata are few in number. An unspecialized area of epidermal cells is located at the very …

Meander Growth In Artificially Straightened Streams, Calvin A. Noble, Robert C. Palmquist Jan 1968

Meander Growth In Artificially Straightened Streams, Calvin A. Noble, Robert C. Palmquist

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two rivers near Ames, Iowa, which were artificially straightened in 1900, are developing a meandering pattern. Meander amplitudes and wavelengths and channel widths were measured on aerial photographs taken in 1939, 1953, 1958 and 1966. Linear regressions between meander parameters and time, distance downstream from a bend, channel width-depth ratio, bank materials and discharge indicate that the rate of meander development decreases with distance from a bend in the channel, that meander amplitude increased more rapidly with time than does meander wavelength, that meander amplitude increases most rapidly in channels with low width-depth ratios and meander wavelength increases most rapidly …

An Analysis Of The Attitudes Of College Students Concerning The War In Vietnam, Lyle K. Henry, Charles Moore, Nancy Moore, Sheryl Kessler, Mildred Stone Jan 1968

An Analysis Of The Attitudes Of College Students Concerning The War In Vietnam, Lyle K. Henry, Charles Moore, Nancy Moore, Sheryl Kessler, Mildred Stone

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Attitudes of a sampling of students at Morningside College was compared with results from a poll conducted by church magazines. A locally developed Hawk-Dove scale was designed and administered to the college sample and the results compared with certain personal and personality attributes. It was found that college seniors were much more critical of the war than college freshmen. The former were similar to attitudes of clergy while the latter were more similar to the attitudes of laymen. However, aggression scores on the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS) were almost identical for freshmen and seniors. For dominance on the EPPS, …

The Overhead Projector As An Aid To Laboratory Instruction, Larry L. Schenken Jan 1968

The Overhead Projector As An Aid To Laboratory Instruction, Larry L. Schenken

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In many cases the science teacher overlooks the possibility of using the overhead projector during laboratory sessions. Projectors often are covered with dust jackets and shoved into a comer like some unwanted piece of old furniture as soon as a lab activity is started. With a bit of planning these machines may become an integral part of almost any laboratory experience.

Vegetation Of Slope Forests Along The Des Moines River, Dana Roy Sanders Jan 1968

Vegetation Of Slope Forests Along The Des Moines River, Dana Roy Sanders

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Vegetation of the slope forests along the Des Moines River in the area of the Saylorville Reservoir was surveyed with the objectives of determining composition of these forests and of providing data prior to flooding. The study consisted of two sections - transect study and a random-point study. The transect study provided data for which species-pair correlations were determined. The random-point study provided a more detailed description of the species composition. Average cover values for herbaceous species which are presented indicate great variability from stand to stand. The same conclusions were drawn from the importance values of canopy species. The …

Movements And Daily Activities Of Fox As Determined By Visual Observations And Radio Tracking, Roger A. Allan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Movements and daily activities of the red fox (Vulpes fulva) were studied by visual observation and radio tracking in Buena Vista County, Iowa. Five fox were trapped with steel jump traps. Before release, three of the trapped fox were immobilized with a commercial tranquilizer to enable attachment of an ear tag and a collar-type transmitter on each fox. Range of the radio equipment when field tested showed an effective range of just under one fourth mile. The diameter of the loop antenna on the receiver was critical, and probably indirectly contributed to the death of one fox. Two juvenile fox, …

Time-Lapse Movie Camera For Recording Recreation Activity Cycles, Arnold J. Sohn Jan 1968

Time-Lapse Movie Camera For Recording Recreation Activity Cycles, Arnold J. Sohn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An 8-mm. time-lapse movie camera was developed to secure data on daily, weekly and seasonal cycles and fluctuations in recreational activity on selected Iowa lakes. The unit was self-contained in a waterproof and dustproof aluminum box and functioned automatically for 12 days on a single 50-foot roll of super 8 mm. Kodachrome film. Data were obtained on use cycles by boaters, water skiers, fishermen and swimmers. The most satisfactory data were obtained when the zoom lens of the camera was set at full telephoto (focal length of 35 mm.) and positioned to cover rather small, but popular, use areas for …
