The Mini-Bloc: Chance And Challenge For Independent Study, Claire Marie Patik
The Mini-Bloc: Chance And Challenge For Independent Study, Claire Marie Patik
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In the Mini-bloc: Chance and Challenge for independent study and research, the writer suggests as an opportunity to provide training in desirable study habits and in critical thinking, a unit plan which allows for a study in depth of some aspect of biology on an individual basis. The investigation of a topic selected by the student himself and pursued at his own rate, aims to lead the individual student to the formulation of concepts and a knowledge of scientific principles based upon his reading and experimentation. Due to personal interest in the topic and an unscheduled plan of procedure, the …
Early Emhryogenesis In Chicken Eggs Of Different Weights, K. L. Arora, L. H. Matsumoto
Early Emhryogenesis In Chicken Eggs Of Different Weights, K. L. Arora, L. H. Matsumoto
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Early embryogenesis in eggs of different weights, from a commercial strain of White Leghorn chickens, was studied. Observations were limited to unincubated blastoderms and embryos after 38 hours of incubation. Large eggs were found to be associated with high frequency of "degenerating" blastoderms as compared to medium and small eggs. Mean width of the unincubated blastoderms was directly related to the egg size. Such a direct relationship was, however, not so obvious in 38-hour embryos, probably because of a high degree of developmental variability associated with large eggs. Embryonic development in medium sized eggs was consistently superior and invariably more …
Mark-And-Recapture Methods For Studying Domestic Cockroach Populations, Frank J. Bulow, Donald G. Huggins
Mark-And-Recapture Methods For Studying Domestic Cockroach Populations, Frank J. Bulow, Donald G. Huggins
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Mark and recapture methods were used to estimate populations of American cockroaches, Periplenata americana (Linnaeus), and brown-banded cockroaches, Supella supellectilium (Serville) inhabiting various rooms in the Science Hall, Iowa State University. These methods also permitted estimates of sex ratios, length-frequencies, movement, and activity patterns. Food appeared to be the limiting factor in determining size of cockroach populations. Males outnumbered females in both species with total sex ratios being.8 and.6 for brown-banded and American cockroaches, respectively. Most of the American cockroaches caught were over 28.0 mm. with the 36.1 - 40.0 mm. class being the largest. The brown-banded cockroach catch contained …
Evaluation Of College-Level Instruction In Freshman Composition; Part Ii, Richard Braddock, Charles R. Statler
Evaluation Of College-Level Instruction In Freshman Composition; Part Ii, Richard Braddock, Charles R. Statler
Faculty Publications
To supplement an experiment at the University of Northern Iowa on the effectiveness of college-level instruction in freshman composition; the University of Iowa conducted its own experiment on the evaluation of freshman composition. This experiment was designed to determine (1) which method of rating papers is more reliable--the "general impression" method of the Educational Testing Service or the "analytical" method used at the University of Iowa; (2) if a more significant measure of writing quality is obtained when the better of two papers; rather than merely one; is used as a criterion; and (3) if the writing performance of students …

Clinical Teaching: Some Experimental Observations, Ralph Scott
Faculty Publications
A study attempted to measure some effects of a 2-week postbaccalaureate workshop on clinical teaching (teaching which provides children with individualized materials and procedures) and to assess administrative encouragement and appreciation of clinical experimentation and innovation. An experimental group of 20 experienced elementary teachers who had participated in the summer workshop and a control group of 49 who had enrolled too late for admission were invited to participate in a clinical teaching experiment. Hypothesis 1; that a higher proportion of the experimental group would agree to participate in a project requiring a clinical report; was not supported. Hypothesis 2 was …

An Apology For The Petrine Doctrine, Arthur Frederick Ide
An Apology For The Petrine Doctrine, Arthur Frederick Ide
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Roman Catholic Christianity confesses the belief that man is "like the angels--slightly less than God," when he realizes and fulfills his supernatural vocation through the process of intellectual contemplation, guided by theological thought which is guarded and revealed by the Pope who speaks as and for Christ, having been granted this power by Christ. There are some who cannot accept this view, especially if it incorporates papal infallibility, which they see as a fable, built upon the testimony of Papias of Hierapolis which was elaborated upon by Clement of Alexandria . The office of the papacy is looked upon as …

A Study Of The Vertical Distribution Of Periphyton Diatoms In Lake West Okoboji, Lowa, H. P. Hostetter, E. F. Stoermer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A series of five stations, arranged as a bottom transect away from shore between the depths of 15 centimeters and 5 meters, was studied. During the three-month period of study (June, July, and August, 1964) there was an evident seasonal succession of dominant diatom species at all stations. In general, the greatest fluctuations in the dominant elements of the flora were noted in the shallower stations. Besides being more seasonally stable, the floras of the deeper stations were relatively more diverse on all dates sampled.
Pollution Study In The Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Ruth N. Siemer
Pollution Study In The Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Ruth N. Siemer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Bacteriological quality of water along commonly used canoe routes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area along the Minnesota-Canadian border was checked by estimating the most probable number (MPN) of coliforms and total plate counts of samples collected over a wide geographic area. Results show that much of the water used for drinking purposes does not meet United States Public Health Service standards for potability. Additional study is needed to determine (1) whether USPHS standards have any validity as applied to wilderness waters where high counts probably do not indicate human fecal contamination and (2) whether animals contributing to high counts …
Investigations Of Nematode-Destroying Fungi In Central Iowa, Gerrit D. Van Dyke
Investigations Of Nematode-Destroying Fungi In Central Iowa, Gerrit D. Van Dyke
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Three substrata, dung of Sylvilagus fioridanus, leaf mulch and rotting logs, from wooded areas in central Iowa are investigated for nematode-destroying fungi. Fifteen species are newly recorded for Iowa as follows: Acrostalagmus bactrosporus, Arthrobotrys cladodes var. macroides, A. dactyloides, A. robusta, Cystopage lateralis, Dactylaria candida, D. haptotyla, Dactylella bembicoides, D. ellipsospora., Harposporium helicoides, Meristacrum asterospermum, Nematoctonus haptocladus, N. leiosporus, N. robusta, and Stylopage hadra. Eight previously reported species are isolated. A species resembling Nematoctonus leiosporus but with shorter spores which were often hooked at the terminal end was found. All three substrata proved highly productive.
Stylet-Bearing Nematodes Associated With Plants In Iowa Prairies, D. C. Norton, P. E. Ponchillia
Stylet-Bearing Nematodes Associated With Plants In Iowa Prairies, D. C. Norton, P. E. Ponchillia
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Native Iowa prairies contained a plant parasitic nematode population which differed markedly in predominant species from populations in cultivated fields. Nematode species and their abundance varied among the five prairies sampled. Aorolaimus was common in most prairies, but is not known in Iowa cultivated soils. Tylenchorhynchus maximus was common in the Kalsow and Sheeder prairies, but was not found in the Cayler and Hayden prairies. Helicotylenchus was common in all prairies, but the species were unevenly distributed.

Notes On The Diatom Cylindrotheca Gracilis (Breh. Ex Kutz) Grun: Its Ecology And Distribution, C. L. Christensen, C. W. Reimer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The diatom Cylindrotheca gracilis (Breb. ex Kutz) Grun., considered by some as a "Brackish water" species, was found as a massive growth in isolated pools along Dugout Creek, Dickinson County, Iowa. Chemical analyses show the water to be high in S04, Mg., Ca., and low in Cl ions. Comparative data from other waters in the United States containing this species shows similar pattern of high conductivity suggesting that factors other than chlorides might be more critical for growth. United States distribution for this diatom includes: Maryland (brackish water), Ohio (fresh water) and Iowa (fresh water).
Experimental Induction Of A Normal Morphological Phenocopy Of An Inflorescence In A Zea. Mays L. Mutant, Alan R. Orr
Experimental Induction Of A Normal Morphological Phenocopy Of An Inflorescence In A Zea. Mays L. Mutant, Alan R. Orr
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
FASCICLED EAR (Fa), a dominant ZEA MAYS L. mutant effecting the form of the inflorescence, was treated with aqueous solutions of a-naphthaleneacetic acid, indoleacetic acid, gibberellic acid, maleic hydrazide and triiodobenzoic acid every three days from the seedling stage until tassel emergence. The mutant responded to a-naphthaleneacetic acid and indoleactic acid in such a manner that certain treated plants developed a normal-appearing ear and tassel. The idea that an ear and tassel shoot meristem is a "plastic" system genetically programmed at specific points in development through a hormonal balance is discussed.
The Crystal Structure Of Rb4sbiiisbvbr12, Camden R. Hubbard, Robert A. Jacobson
The Crystal Structure Of Rb4sbiiisbvbr12, Camden R. Hubbard, Robert A. Jacobson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The crystal structure of rubidium hexabromoantimonate has been determined from three dimensional X-ray data. Eight molecules per unit cell crystallize in the tetragonal space group I41/amd (D4h19) with a = 10.70 and c = 21.69 Å. The structure was refined by full matrix least squares with all atoms anisotropic to a discrepancy index, R = 0.102 for 401 independent reflections collected by peak height counter methods. The structure is almost isomorphic with that of (NH4)4SbIIISbvBr12. Both the SbIIIBr6-3 and the Sb …

Dissociation Of Glyceraldehyde-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase With Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, G. E. Marti, B. J. White
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Rabbit muscle glyceraldehyle-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPD) was dissociated into a subunit species via lauryl sulfate (LS). The incubation mixture prepared from active GAPD 10-5 M and LS 10-3 M showed a rapid loss of initial activity. Within 30 minutes after the addition of the powdered LS, there was a 50 percent loss in initial enzymatic activity. The appearance of the subunit species was verified by Sephadex (a crossed-linked dextran) molecular sieve studies. Using a column buffer containing 0.01 M acetic acid, 0.10 M NaCl and 0.005 M LS at 25° C., with a pH of 6.1 ± …
Summary Of 22 Consecutive Years Of Creel Census On Spirit Lake, Terry Jennings
Summary Of 22 Consecutive Years Of Creel Census On Spirit Lake, Terry Jennings
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A creel census has been used on Spirit Lake annually since 1945. There have been two creel census methods used. Each method and the results obtained are discussed. Fish harvest, harvest rate, and angler use has fluctuated between wide limits. For an average year, bullhead, yellow perch, and walleye are creeled in that order of abundance. The catch rate has averaged 1.24 fish-hour for the 22-year period. Since 1960 there has been a 30 percent reduction in the average annual angler use on Spirit Lake.
Age And Growth Of Sauger In Pool 19 Of The Mississippi River, Neil E. Carter
Age And Growth Of Sauger In Pool 19 Of The Mississippi River, Neil E. Carter
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Saugers, Stizostedion canadense (Smith), were collected in the Mississippi River (Pool 19) in 1966 and 1967 as part of a study of fish ecology and food habits. The length-weight relationship was described as
Log W = -5.552 + 3.184 Log L
where W = weight in grams and L = total length in millimeters. In August, 1966, and June and July, 1967, condition did not increase with increase in length as expected from the slope of 3.184, but in the other seasons there was such an increase. The average growth was similar to that reported for other sections of the …
Rocket And Satellite Studies Of The X-Ray Emission From The Quiescent Sun, P. R. Sengupta
Rocket And Satellite Studies Of The X-Ray Emission From The Quiescent Sun, P. R. Sengupta
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Quiescent sun x-ray measurements made by different workers during the past 19 years have been studied. Analysis of the data available up to April, 1967, confirms the conclusion that the quiescent sun x-ray emission is thermal in nature and is closely related to the solar activity level. The spectrum below 18 Å is mainly continuous and is primarily due to recombination emission. Bremsstrahlung becomes important at high temperatures. The 18 - 100 Å flux is primarily due to line emission and is emitted mainly by the undisturbed coronal regions. Below 20 A the emission is primarily from the active - …
Geomorphology In Iowa 1943-1968: An Annotated Bibliography Of The Literature, Sherwood D. Tuttle, Stanley J. Prior Jr.
Geomorphology In Iowa 1943-1968: An Annotated Bibliography Of The Literature, Sherwood D. Tuttle, Stanley J. Prior Jr.
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A study of what has been written about the geomorphology of Iowa since the publication of the Kay volume, The Pleistocene of Iowa, in 1943, resulted in the compilation of an annotated bibliography. An examination of the subject material and procedures described suggests: studies since 1943 are process oriented rather than time oriented; increased use of paleosols and buried erosion surfaces; introduction of radiocarbon dating; and a lack of discussion about a framework for geomorphology.

The Image Of The Scientist Among Iowa High School Students, Donald J. Schmidt
The Image Of The Scientist Among Iowa High School Students, Donald J. Schmidt
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
One-third of the Iowa high school students sampled in this study have written what is considered an accurate image of the scientist. It appears that the science teachers are not the ones who determine the image that the student has. A call is made for involvement in research at the undergraduate level by prospective science teachers so they might be able to present a more accurate image of the scientist to their students. It is also suggested that an extensive case history study of Iowa scientists be made available for use in Iowa high schools by students and teachers.
Effects Of Megestrol Acetate, A Progestin, On Female Rats, Lenore Southam
Effects Of Megestrol Acetate, A Progestin, On Female Rats, Lenore Southam
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Silastic (dimethylpolysiloxane) capsules containing megestrol acetate (6- methyl-17-∝-acetoxypregna-4, 6- diene-3, 20-dione) were implanted subcutaneously in mature female rats. The effects of megestrol on the ovary, on fertility, on body weight, on adrenal weight, and on physical activity were observed. Megestrol acetate did not inhibit ovulation or fertility, and did not reduce ovarian weight; thus it did not have an anti-gonadotrophic effect at the dosages used. It affected vaginal cytology in a typical progestational fashion producing a constant diestrus or mixed cell smear. Body weight increased during treatment and remained fairly constant after treatment stopped. Adrenal weight decreased during treatment and …

Do We Need Larger Text-Books?, R. R. Haun
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Current problems in the use of text-books arise from: The continuous production of new knowledge, some basic in concepts or conceptual schemes and some extensions in exciting developments of new devices and applications; but all of them immediately embraced by text-book writers and teachers. Text-books have not become proportionately larger probably because of an irrational belief of most students, parents and even teachers that books should be a relatively small item in the student's budget and textbooks look too big and formidable to the student who thinks of a textbook as a mass of material he must learn, memorizing if …
