Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Teachers are constantly being reminded of the importance of making evaluations of student achievement. Evaluations should be made both for the measurement of the progress of the pupil and for determining the effectiveness of the teacher himself. Methods, tools, and techniques for making these evaluations are topics of common interest and continuous discussion in the teaching fraternity.

Natural History Of The Two Crayfish Of Northwestern Iowa, Orconectes Virilis And Orconectes Immunis, Margaret J. Caldwell, Richard V. Bovbjerg Jan 1969

Natural History Of The Two Crayfish Of Northwestern Iowa, Orconectes Virilis And Orconectes Immunis, Margaret J. Caldwell, Richard V. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The only two crayfish inhabiting northwestern Iowa, O. immunis and O. virilis, are ecologically isolated to pond and stream habitats respectively. The former burrows deeply to escape summer drought and winter cold, while the latter does not burrow extensively and apparently overwinters buried in stream beds. The pattern of reproductive events is basically similar in the two species, but O. virilis generally lags several weeks behind O. immunis. The pond species often matures in one summer under good conditions and may lay eggs in either fall or spring; the stream species is less flexible, not maturing until the end …

Comparison Of Chlorine-36 Exchange With K2recl6 And Cs2 Reocl5, Joe D. Woods, Joann Gruca, Carl M. Pietrzak Jan 1969

Comparison Of Chlorine-36 Exchange With K2recl6 And Cs2 Reocl5, Joe D. Woods, Joann Gruca, Carl M. Pietrzak

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

K2ReCl6 (IV), after precipitation from solutions of HCl36 with nitron, contained no significant radioactivity. Cs2ReOCl5 (V), insoluble in HCl, after suspension in methanol containing HCl36 and filtration was radioactive. An x-ray diffraction determination of the Cs2ReOCl6 unit cell parameters and a microscopic estimation of the surface of the samples made possible the calculation of 83% exchange of the surface chlorine atoms. Results agree with the generalization that octohedral complexes with no vacant d orbitals are inert, whereas those with at least one vacant d orbital are labile. Cs2 …

The Dual Crisis In Science And Society, Barry Commoner Jan 1969

The Dual Crisis In Science And Society, Barry Commoner

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Our present achievements in science and technology appear to contrast vividly with our present lack of achievement in solving social problems. We can nourish a man in the supreme isolation of outer space-but we cannot adequately feed the children of Calcutta or Harlem. We hope to analyze life on other planets-but we have not yet learned to understand our own neighbors. We are attempting to live on the moon-but we cannot yet live peacefully on our own planet.

A Change And A Parting: Nuffield Biology In England, Carmon Slater

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

An appreciation of the problems encountered by curriculum innovations in England cannot truly be gained without first catching a glimpse of the educational system in this country, particularly the secondary school system. The British secondary student will usually be found in one of three basic secondary schools, i.e., the traditional grammar school, the secondary modem school, or a comprehensive secondary school.

Nomenclature Of Some Pennsylvanian Upper Cherokee (Desmoinesian Series) Coals Of Iowa, Stephen A. Hall Jan 1969

Nomenclature Of Some Pennsylvanian Upper Cherokee (Desmoinesian Series) Coals Of Iowa, Stephen A. Hall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The nomenclatural history of some Upper Cherokee coals of Iowa is reviewed, beginning with the 1870 geological survey. The Lacona, Panora, Wheeler, Marshall, and Lonsdale coals were named by St. John. The two more important coal beds, the Panora and Wheeler, are discussed in detail. The Panora, described in Guthrie County, was in 1927 renamed Whitebreast by A. L. Lugn for exposures in Lucas County within half a mile of St. John's type section of the Wheeler Coal. At the time of description both coals were measured at each type section in NE¼ sec. 33, T. 73 N., R. 22 …

Growth Of The White-Mouse Gastrocnemius Muscle I. In Terrestrial Gravity, Charles C. Wunder, John W. C. Bird

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The gastrocnemius muscle from white mice (Swiss Webster, female; NLW, male and female; varying in age from 6 to 13 weeks and in body mass from 8 to 36 gm) were analyzed by means of Huxley's Equation for Heterauxic Growth where double logarithmic plots were performed of muscle size as a function of body mass. These mice had been grown in normal gravity. Relative wet mass, relative dry mass, and percent dry mass did not display significant changes with body mass. Percent noncollagen nitrogen [NCN] in the dry muscle, however, did show an effect which was not significantly different from …

An Analysis Of Team Teaching And Large Group Instruction In Junior High Science Bettendorf Middle School, Gary D. Tilleros, David R. Folks Jan 1969

An Analysis Of Team Teaching And Large Group Instruction In Junior High Science Bettendorf Middle School, Gary D. Tilleros, David R. Folks

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A team of nine members assumed the responsibility for teaching 1250 students utilizing team teaching and large group instruction on an experimental basis. Students used modified versions of AAAS and IPS science curriculum materials. Modification of materials was necessary to operate effectively with laboratory groupings of 125. Heterogeneous grouping and individual progress was stressed with students working at their own rate. Physical changes included the removal of three walls to provide for a U-shaped complex. Additional laboratory supplies were also purchased due to class size. The program was closely associated with the class guide system and flexible scheduling in operation …

Notes On Iowa Tardigrades, Ronald G. Kimmel, Paul A. Meglitsch Jan 1969

Notes On Iowa Tardigrades, Ronald G. Kimmel, Paul A. Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Five species of tardigrades, Macrobiotus areolatus, M. islandicus M. hufelandii, Milnesium tardigradum, and Hypsibius tuberculata are reported from lichens growing on Iowa trees. Factors influencing tardigrade distribution are discussed, especially with reference to the lichen species represented in the samples, and the tree substrate. Hypsibius tuberculata was found to be most abundant about 2 meters above ground level, and to become less abundant below, while the other four species were found to be most abundant near the ground and decline steadily with increasing height. No clear evidence of preference of northern, southern, eastern, or western exposures was found.

Accidental Mortality Of Crappie In Pound Nets Fished For Rough Fish Species, Larry Mitzner Jan 1969

Accidental Mortality Of Crappie In Pound Nets Fished For Rough Fish Species, Larry Mitzner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Crappie contributed a maximum of 28% to the catch of commercially fished pound nets. Mortality of crappie in pound nets was measured concurrently with total catch and temperature. A regression analysis was calculated for net density, in pounds per net lift, and water temperature (°C) against the percentage loss of crappie. Net density was the most relevant factor affecting mortality. Possible removal rates of rough fish at various, arbitrary levels of expected crappie losses were discussed. The second ranked sport fish in the catch was bullhead, but no mortality was observed. Other sport fish contributed less than 2% to the …

Genetic Effects Of X-Ray In Combination With Streptomycin On Arabidopsis Thaliana I, Sujit K. Dhar Jan 1969

Genetic Effects Of X-Ray In Combination With Streptomycin On Arabidopsis Thaliana I, Sujit K. Dhar

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Soaking seeds of Arabidopsis in 0.005% streptomycin (SM) produced no second generation chlorophyll mutants. But when seeds were soaked in 0.005% SM for 20 hours before irradiation with X-ray, the percentage of chlorophyll mutants was lower than in plants obtained from seeds that were soaked in distilled water before exposure to X-ray. This protective action of SM was antagonized by 0.01 M Mncl2. It is suggested that this change in the radiosensitivity of Arabdopsis by SM is caused by chelation of Mn++ with SM, thus causing a deficiency of the Mn++ ion, which is essential for …

Charles F. Crane, of Ames, Iowa, the collector, realized the scientific importance of the specimen and allowed it to be described and reposited in the Repository, Department of Geology, the University of Iowa, Iowa City. The species is named Platycrinites cranei Strimple & McGinnis, new species, named for Charles F. Crane. Description and comparison with related species from Montana and southeastern Iowa is made.

Some Ultrastructural Aspects Of Spermatogenesis And Sperm Morphology In The Brine Shrimp Artemia Salina Leach (Crustacea: Branchiopoda), George Gordon Brown Jan 1969

Some Ultrastructural Aspects Of Spermatogenesis And Sperm Morphology In The Brine Shrimp Artemia Salina Leach (Crustacea: Branchiopoda), George Gordon Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although crustacean diversity has stimulated research enormously, sperm morphology and functional aspects have received little attention recently as compared to earlier times (e.g., Gilson, 1886; Retzius, 1909; Wilson, 1928). The exceptions include primarily the malacostracan spermatozoa (e.g., isopods, Reger, 1964; decapods, Moses, 1961; Brown, 1966a; Anderson and Ellis, 1967; Chevaillier, 1966, 1967; Vaughn, 1968), although other representatives have also been studied (e.g., Branchiopods, Fautrez-Firlefyn, 1951; Fautrez-Firlefyn and Fautrez, 1954, 1955; Ostracods, Lowndes, 1935). In recent studies, the author (Brown, 1966a, 1966b; Brown and Metz, 1967) has examined spermatozoa of representative species of seven crustacean subclasses (Ostracoda excepted). These studies involved …

Summary Of 23 Consecutive Years Of Creel Census On West Okoboji, Terry Jennings

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A creel census has been used on West Okoboji Lake annually since 1946. Two creel census methods have been used. Each method and the results obtained are discussed. Fish harvest, harvest rate and angler use has fluctuated between wide limits. For an average year yellow perch, black bullhead, and bluegill are usually the most abundant species captured. The mean harvest rate for 23 years is 1.58 fish per hour.

Possible Subglacial Origin For "Minor Moraine" Topography, John D. Foster, Robert C. Palmquist Jan 1969

Possible Subglacial Origin For "Minor Moraine" Topography, John D. Foster, Robert C. Palmquist

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Surface expression of the Cary Age Drift (Des Moines lobe of Iowa) exhibits a pattern of intersecting linear ridges and depressions, known as swell-swale or "minor moraine" topography. Linear ridges, as mapped from air photos, are aligned either parallel or approximately transverse (45° to 90°) to associated end morainal systems. Both parallel and transverse ridges appear genetically related, range in height from 5-20 feet and are composed predominantly of till. Ridge intersections produce "T", "offset" "step" and "box" patterns. The irregular shape and high dip of crossbedding of small sand bodies and the dip of small faults and joints suggest …
