Growth Of The White-Mouse Gastrocnemius Muscle Ii. In Non-Terrestrial Gravity, Charles C. Wunder, John W. C. Bird Jan 1969

Growth Of The White-Mouse Gastrocnemius Muscle Ii. In Non-Terrestrial Gravity, Charles C. Wunder, John W. C. Bird

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Exposure of white mice (Swiss Webster, female; NLW, male and female) to 1.5 to 7.0 G's of chronic centrifugation from the age of 5 weeks for durations of 1 to 8 weeks is known to cause some reduction in body growth. However, the retardation of muscular development was not as drastic. When corrections were made for differences between experimental and control body mass by means of Huxley's Equation for Heterauxic Growth, the muscles of experimental mice were seen to be larger than those of control animals of the same size. The measurements of muscle size, in order of increasing high-G …

Fauna Of Testate Amoebae From The Rhytidome Of Juglans Nigra, Ronald E. Goddard, Paul A. Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Samples of bark without visible lichen or moss cover were taken from a Juglans nigra located in a city lot in Des Moines, Iowa, remote from water. Euglypha ciliata, E. cuspidata, Microchlamys patella, Centropyxis aerophilus, and two unidentified species of Difflugia were found, ranging from ground level to heights of 35 feet. An estimate of population density, based on a modification of the most probable number count, showed evidence of zonation on the tree surface, with C. aerophilus restricted to near ground level, M. patella occurring approximately evenly up to 35 feet, and E. cuspidata most abundant at moderate heights. …

Upstream Watershed Activities In Iowa And Our Environment, Wilson T. Moon Jan 1969

Upstream Watershed Activities In Iowa And Our Environment, Wilson T. Moon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Watershed activities in Iowa have had considerable impact on the welfare and environment of our people. Reductions in floodwater, sediment, and erosion damages to lands have been the principal benefits. Preservation and enhancement of the environment is recognized as a by-product for better living for both rural and urban residents. The Flood Control Act of June 22, 1936, a Congressional appropriation in 1953 of 5 million dollars for Pilot Watershed Projects, and the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act of 1954 (Public Law 566) have been the principal means of initiating watershed projects in Iowa during the past 25 years. …

The Giant Boulders Of The Iowan Drift And A Consideration Of Their Origin, Richard A. Dirks, Carl R. Busch Jan 1969

The Giant Boulders Of The Iowan Drift And A Consideration Of Their Origin, Richard A. Dirks, Carl R. Busch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Samples of the large granitic boulders of the Iowan drift were analyzed and features of the boulder distribution were examined. The analysis gave evidence of a central body of single granite stock which included more than 80 per cent of all large boulders examined within the Iowan drift area. Characteristics of this main granite stock were then compared to the bedrock areas which could be considered source regions of the boulders. All evidence pointed toward a source region in the large granite body found in central and west central Minnesota. Weathering and structural features of the boulders suggested that they …

Anatomic And Physiologic Effects Of The Antithyroid Drug, Propylthiouracil, On Rats, A. James Shold

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Administration of the antithyroid drug, propylthiouracil (PTU), to albino male rats at the dietary level of 0.1 % PTU is accompanied by a decrease in growth rate and a decrease in the oxygen consumption rate. After the initial administration of PTU, prolonged treatment with the drug did not further lower the oxygen consumption rate. The ratios of organ weight to body weight for the testes, stomach, thyroid, eyes, pituitary, and brain were found to be larger in the treated rats than in the untreated controls. The organ weight to body weight ratios of the spleen, liver, kidneys, and heart were …

A Summary Of A Survey Of Science Taught In Hampton Elementary Schools, Kenneth E. Moeller Jan 1969

A Summary Of A Survey Of Science Taught In Hampton Elementary Schools, Kenneth E. Moeller

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In 1957 the Russians put an artificial satellite into orbit. Since that time science education in the United States has been experiencing a steady change. This change has not only been in course name and content but also in new methods of science teaching. The role of the science teacher is most important in the teaching of the new science materials. The instructor must be able to guide and direct the activities of the students, not just spew forth information. Often in the past, the instructor has taught as he had been taught. Most courses now are developed along these …

An Accurate Method For The Determination Of Surface Area, Larry L. Schenken Jan 1969

An Accurate Method For The Determination Of Surface Area, Larry L. Schenken

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Many times it is necessary for teachers or students to determine the surface area of irregular objects (e.g., leaves) during laboratory investigations. The usual procedure involves laboriously tracing the outline of the object on graph paper, counting the number of square units on the paper, and then adding some "fudge factor" to estimate partially encircled squares.

Our responsibilities as science educators have never been greater than they are today." I know personally that such a statement has been made regularly since the 1930s, and I suspect it was commonplace some before that. These responsibilities have had various emphases identified as the reason for their being. The emphases have included such applications as those made to industry, engineering, medicine, warfare, and space exploration.

Understanding Of Science By Elementary Teachers, Daryl D. Smith Jan 1969

Understanding Of Science By Elementary Teachers, Daryl D. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper reviews some studies relating to the subject matter competency of pre-service elementary teachers. Attention is called to the importance of an understanding of the nature of science by the elementary major, and the need to measure this understanding. A study designed to test the understanding of and attitude toward science in elementary majors is discussed. The scores of elementary majors on the understanding of science measure are compared with those of other prospective teachers (both secondary and elementary). It is suggested that a measure of this type could be used as a basis for evaluation of innovations in …

This cross-indexed file contains thousands of references on 3" x 5" cards to publications on the taxonomy and distribution of Iowa plant species. These are available for use by interested …

Sheath And Cellular Irregularities Of Sphaerotilus Natans Caused By Ferric Ammonium Citrate And Glucose, David H. Tjaden, Robert C. Goss Jan 1969

Sheath And Cellular Irregularities Of Sphaerotilus Natans Caused By Ferric Ammonium Citrate And Glucose, David H. Tjaden, Robert C. Goss

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Growth in citrate broth was turbid, rusty brown in color with some slime formation. The glucose broth had a milky white color with pronounced slime accumulation. Cells grown on the citrate medium were uniformly spaced within the sheath and ranged from 1 to 4 μ in length and 1 to 2 μ in width. The sheath was uniform in shape and ranged from 2.0 to 2.5 μ in width in young cultures. Sheath irregularities began to appear by the third day and were the greatest, 1 to 12 μ, by the fifth day when they gave the appearance of disintegrating. …

Chlorophyll Content In Mutants Of Glycine Max (L.) Merril During Seedling Development, Susan Coiner, Alan Orr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Xantha form mutants of Glycine Max (L.) Merril were examined for their chlorophyll content during early seedling development. Trifoliate leaves of 8-24 day old dark green, light green and yellow plants differed significantly in chlorophyll content. Total chlorophyll content in all three phenotypes increased up to approximately the 16th day followed by a slight drop from the 16th to the 24th day. The relative proportion of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b differed among the three leaf types.

A Comparative Study Of The Ontogeny Of Macrosclereids And Osteosclereids In The Integument Of Cassia Fasciculata And Desmodium Canadense, Philip J. Arnholt Jan 1969

A Comparative Study Of The Ontogeny Of Macrosclereids And Osteosclereids In The Integument Of Cassia Fasciculata And Desmodium Canadense, Philip J. Arnholt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Developmental patterns, developmental sequence, deposition of secondary wall material, and maturation of macrosclereids and osteosclereids were similar in Desmodium canadense and Cassia fasciculata. Both species apparently lack a well-defined strophiolar region. Two distinct differences were observed in the mature seed coat. One is the presence of a single row of macrosclereids in the hilar region of Cassia fasciculata and a double row of macrosclereids in the hilar region of Desmodium canadense. The second is the appearance of "spicule-like" structures, apparently enveloped laterally by a cellulosic matrix in the cuticularized layer of Cassia fasciculata.

Relationship Of Pectic Enzymes To Abscission, Daryl D. Smith Jan 1969

Relationship Of Pectic Enzymes To Abscission, Daryl D. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A comprehensive review of work pertinent to changes in the separation zone prior to abscission is presented. Since these changes are largely pectic in nature the involvement of pectic enzymes is suggested. The results obtained for the role of pectin methylesterase (PME) in abscission are as follows: (1) A localization of PME activity in the abscission zone of tobacco pedicels was established; (2) Pollination of tobacco flowers is followed by an increase in PME activity in the abscission zone while PME activity remains static after prevention of pollination (the flower abscises within a week if not pollinated); (3) Application of …
