Expected Student Outcomes In Earth Science Investigations, John F. Thompson Jan 1969

Expected Student Outcomes In Earth Science Investigations, John F. Thompson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

One of the basic precepts in science teaching is the Futility Factor: no laboratory investigation is ever a complete failure . . . it can always serve as a bad example. There will always be some kind of result when students do investigations. Whether the outcome is expected or not is another question. Occasionally in a classroom investigation the "wrong" outcome is the only result. At times like this we doubt the results obtained even by the authors of the investigation.

What Do I Do Now, Teacher?????, Milbert H. Krohn Jan 1969

What Do I Do Now, Teacher?????, Milbert H. Krohn

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Fifteen years of science fairs has brought me into contact with excitement, danger, success, failure, and freakishness such as never could be known if the spontaneity and creativity of youth had not been challenged. The writer is not sure whether science fairs are necessary or not. Sometimes, after they are over, the justification for another is like hitting yourself on the head with a hammer because it feels so good when you stop. Let's go back, readers, to some things in the past.

Physics Is Too For Girls, Floyd D. Goar Jan 1969

Physics Is Too For Girls, Floyd D. Goar

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

For several years there has been concern about the lack of girls in physics classes and, more recently, the lack of boys. The idea for an all-girl class has been in the back of my mind for some time because just watching the few girls in my physics classes each year gave me the impression that they weren't really enjoying themselves.

Nature Of The Antinatriuretic Action Of Growth Hormone, Ronald R. Bach Jan 1969

Nature Of The Antinatriuretic Action Of Growth Hormone, Ronald R. Bach

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Three interrelated experiments were initiated to study growth hormone's stimulation of urinary sodium retention. First a dose-response curve was determined by administration of known dosages of growth hormone or the vehicle to groups of rats. Urine was collected from four to six hours after administration. In a second experiment, the relationship between time and degree of response to growth hormone was determined. Urine was collected from 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, 12-14, 16-18, and 20-22 hours after administration. Sodium excretion was not altered in the 0-2 hour collection period. Significant retention took place in both the 2-4 and 4-6 hour …

Cognitive Capacity Of Very Young Children, Jacques Mehler, Thomas G. Bever Jan 1969

Cognitive Capacity Of Very Young Children, Jacques Mehler, Thomas G. Bever

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Children between 2 years, 6 months old and 3 years, 2 months old correctly discriminate the relative number of objects in two rows; between 3 years, 2 months and 4 years, 6 months they indicate a longer row with fewer objects to have "more"; after 4 years, 6 months they again discriminate correctly. The discriminative ability of the younger children shows that the logical capacity for cognitive operations exists earlier than previously acknowledged.

Developing Physics Concepts Through The Process Of Variation, Walter J. Gohman Jan 1969

Developing Physics Concepts Through The Process Of Variation, Walter J. Gohman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The present trend in the design of physics courses is to place emphasis on understanding rather than the rote memory of ideas and processes. The development of systematic approaches to direct thought patterns decreases the memory burden. The process of variation provides a universal thought pattern that can be applied in almost all phases of physics. This paper provides a brief description of some selected sample applications. It is hoped that these will illustrate the scope and the merit of this approach.

Deformation Moduli Of Asphalt Cement-Treated Granular Materials, Russell O. Fish, J. M. Hoover Jan 1969

Deformation Moduli Of Asphalt Cement-Treated Granular Materials, Russell O. Fish, J. M. Hoover

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Triaxial compression studies of asphalt cement-treated granular materials indicate that each material exhibited a volume decrease during initial phases of stress-strain. The stress-strain curve was nearly linear until the material reached minimum volume, after which curvature increased rapidly. The analysis presented is based on the assumption that the point of minimum volume represents a yield point similar to proportional limit. Deformation moduli, M, were evaluated by applying linear regression analyses to that portion of the effective stress ratio versus strain curves occurring prior to minimum volume, instead of using a tangent or secant modulus. Plots of M versus σ3 …

Teaching The Fundamentals Tomorrow, Ray E. Wagner, W. Barnett Pearce Jan 1969

Teaching The Fundamentals Tomorrow, Ray E. Wagner, W. Barnett Pearce

Iowa Journal of Communication

This is the era of the knowledge explosion and the communication revolution. Never before has so much information been so readily available with so many different media to transmit it. Never before has man been bombarded with so many different messages competing for his time, his energy, and his allegiance. The future promises that this trend will accelerate: a world of research will quadruple information and the technology of communication will find students carrying computers in their lunch pails and personalized telephones in their shirt pockets. Exaggeration, you say - maybe for today, but certainly not for tomorrow.

Pinter: Absurdist Cum Traditionalist, Edward J. Thorne Jan 1969

Pinter: Absurdist Cum Traditionalist, Edward J. Thorne

Iowa Journal of Communication

Man is adrift in a chaotic universe. He proceeds from no base of divine law, and he moves toward no destination, physical, moral, or spiritual. Each individual, his personality and his being the product of a series of accidents, spends a brief solitary time in the emptiness of life, hermetically sealed, with no possibility of communication with anyone else. In this view life, existence, is meaningless-absurd. As a way of making meaningless existence tolerable, man has invented a network of myths concerning his origins and destiny as well as relationships among men. The entire network is a fabrication with no …

Justice In Ethics, Politics And Rhetoric, Ray D. Dearin Jan 1969

Justice In Ethics, Politics And Rhetoric, Ray D. Dearin

Iowa Journal of Communication

In locating the place of rhetoric in the academic curriculum Aristotle called it "an offshoot of dialectic and also of ethical studies," "Ethical studies," he went on to say, "may fairly be called political; and for this reason rhetoric masquerades as political science, and the professors of its as political scientists - sometimes from want of education, sometimes from ostentation, sometimes owing to other human failings." Although theorists have differed over the precise relationships among these disciplines, it is generally recognized that ethics, politics, and rhetoric share common interests in the personal and social well-being of man. One way to …

The Traditional Vs The Comparative Advantages Case, John W. Wittig Jan 1969

The Traditional Vs The Comparative Advantages Case, John W. Wittig

Iowa Journal of Communication

The attempt to establish critical differences between the comparative advantages case and the traditional needs-plan-benefits approach to debate has been essentially an effort to legitimize one genre of argumentation at the expense of the other. As in most polemical discussions, the obvious has been shunted aside for the insignificant and trivial dissimilarities have become monumental differences. It will be the central thesis of this article that there are no meaningful differences between the comparative advantages and the traditional cases. In all things relevant to a cogent, argumentatively sound debate case the requirements, strategy, persuasiveness, and defensibility of either the comparative …
