Some Staff Self-Perceptions And Student Perceptions Of The Roles Of The Men’S Residence Hall Staff At The University Of Northern Iowa, Dennis L. Brauer Jan 1970

Some Staff Self-Perceptions And Student Perceptions Of The Roles Of The Men’S Residence Hall Staff At The University Of Northern Iowa, Dennis L. Brauer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Residence hall staff members, on each of the three levels, do not agree as to their positional roles. However, the higher the level of staff position, the more agreement there tends to be. For example, hall directors tended to agree on their positional roles more frequently than did the senior head residents. Likewise, the senior head residents tended to show more agreement on positional roles than did head residents. Students perceive the roles of the residence hall staff, on each level, as being primarily concerned with administrative and social areas. The staff showed a lower percentage of total response under …

A Modification Of The Spectrophotometric Determination Of Zinc With Methylene Blue And Thiocyanate In An Aqueous System, Roger William Craig Jan 1970

A Modification Of The Spectrophotometric Determination Of Zinc With Methylene Blue And Thiocyanate In An Aqueous System, Roger William Craig

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The analysis of zinc in the 0-10 microgram range, determined by the loss in absorbance of a buffered methylene blue solution in the presence of thiocyanate in an aqueous system, is described. The technique was best performed with a 1.0 M NaSCN and 6.0 x 10-5 M methylene blue solution buffered with citrate-phosphate to a pH of 3.2. Absorbance readings were taken from the Cary Model 14 recording spectrophotometer in the range of 500-700 mµ with 666 mµ being used as the most useful wavelength for the attempted zinc analysis. The analysis of zinc was found to be satisfactory …

The Isolated Individual In Selected Short Stories Of Katherine Mansfield, Barbara Norris Corson Jan 1970

The Isolated Individual In Selected Short Stories Of Katherine Mansfield, Barbara Norris Corson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to approach Katherine Mansfield's work from a thematic point of view, The scope of her themes is actually quite limited, and all are related in some way to the isolation of the individual, Almost all of her eighty-eight stories can be placed in one or another of three categories, all of which deal with this basic idea, One group shows the isolation of individual members within what appears to be a close-knit family, The second group deals with the woman who isolated from the man with whom she should have a meaningful relationship, usually …

An Analysis Of The Women In Selected Poems Of Robert Frost, Carol Gantenbein Jan 1970

An Analysis Of The Women In Selected Poems Of Robert Frost, Carol Gantenbein

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since Robert Frost created dramatic narratives and lyrics in which men and women characterizations are explored, many studies of such poems have concentrated on the treatment of men-women relationships. In the first chapter of this thesis approaches of various critics are presented as are a statement of the thesis and an overview of the poems explicated. This study is primarily intended to analyze the women as such and to examine their development as personalities possessing certain characteristics. As the thesis develops, Frost's compassion for and psychological insight into the female psyche and his portrayal of unique personalities with diversified characteristic …

The research attempted to determine whether or not there was any difference between the scores of two groups of juniors; both of which had no freshman composition instruction; but one of which (Group 1) had composition instruction in the junior year and the other (Group 2) had not. Three measures; COOP; CEEB; and a theme; were administered at the end of the sophomore year and again at the time when Group 1 completed the course. Comparisons were made between scores of the two groups; of the males of each group; and of the females of each group. Results are: (1) …

A Theory On Interpreting Engine Noises, Robert C. Erickson Jan 1970

A Theory On Interpreting Engine Noises, Robert C. Erickson

Undergraduate Student Work

Mechanics have always used sounds to "trouble shoot" an engine. To a trained ear, each sound is different. Since an ear can be this sensitive, this paper will attempt to prove that electronic equipment can be considerably more accurate in detecting engine problems. The writer of this paper has attempted a project in which he hopes to prove that valve and bearing problems can be located by studying oscilloscope displays. These displays would picture the sound frequencies of valve and bearings in operation. The writer assumed that a comparison could be made of the displays of a normal engine operation …

Excursion: An Original Composition For Flute, Bb Clarinet, Oboe, Tenor Trombone, And Bass Trombone, Ward Maxwell Jamison Jan 1970

Excursion: An Original Composition For Flute, Bb Clarinet, Oboe, Tenor Trombone, And Bass Trombone, Ward Maxwell Jamison

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The composition is based on a twelve-tone row, and its derivative forms of retrograde, inversion, and retrograde inversion. These sequences of tones serve as a unifying factor through out the composition. The rhythmic texture has been so structured as to avoid metric patterns implying tonality. This has been achieved through the use of cross rhythms and avoidance of stress at regular time intervals. The composition makes use of motivic variation melodically, texturally, and arithmetically. Much use is made of counterpoint combined with linear and vertical orders, and purely vertical statements. There are two sections of approximately equal length. The first …

Matrix Organization: An Approach To Effective And Continuing Interdisciplinary Team Functioning, Richard H. Stanley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At this point in history, there is general recognition that the nature of the problems we face requires effective multiple discipline attack. We have, perhaps unconsciously, been thrust into a brave new world in which mankind has the capability to control his environment and shape his own destiny. This brave new world requires new perspective.

A Study Of Abcission Zone Development In Leaves Of Ginkgo Biloba L., G. Wayne Mosher, Daryl D. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The development of the leaf abscission zone in Ginkgo biloba trees and seedlings was studied. Leaves from Ginkgo seedlings were debladed to enhance anatomical changes in the abscission region. The development of an abscission layer was observed six days after deblading. The formation of the zone was not complete, but an abaxial to adaxial pattern of development was apparent. No evidence of separation was noted. Debladed Ginkgo petioles remained green and did not abscise during the six weeks period of study. The development of an abscission layer was observed in leaves from a Ginkgo tree one week prior to separation. …

Effects Of Population Density Upon Channel Catfish In Enclosures, Robert D. Walker, K. D. Carlander Jan 1970

Effects Of Population Density Upon Channel Catfish In Enclosures, Robert D. Walker, K. D. Carlander

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Channel catfish were held in 18-cubic-foot pens from June 1 to Sept. 9 at stocking rates of 2, 4, 8, 12, 18, and 24 fish per pen. Mean weight per fish on Sept. 9 showed an inverse relationship with population density. Condition factors increased in all pens throughout the study. Fish in pens with 2, 4, and 8 fish were in better condition than those in more crowded pens after July 15. Growth of fish in the pen with 2 fish was similar to that in the open pond. Growth of channel catfish was greater in 2 ft. of water …

Pre-Lmpoundment Boating Activity In The Saylorville Reservoir Area, Richard E. Lenning Jan 1970

Pre-Lmpoundment Boating Activity In The Saylorville Reservoir Area, Richard E. Lenning

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Studies of pre-impoundment boating activity were made in the Saylorville reservoir area, Polk County, Iowa, from June 1968 to December 1969. The peak period of boating on the Des Moines River in the area occurred in August and September, but because of low water, flat-bottomed boats and canoes made up about 78% (392 of 506) of river craft seen. An increase in large pleasure boats was observed during high river flow in early summer 1969. Most boating took place on weekend and holiday afternoons. Most boaters and canoeists had at least a high-school education, reported incomes of over $7000, and …

Some Blood Parasite And Disease Antibody Findings In Wild Rio Grande Turkeys Stocked In Iowa, David J. Roslien, Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1970

Some Blood Parasite And Disease Antibody Findings In Wild Rio Grande Turkeys Stocked In Iowa, David J. Roslien, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Thirty-nine wild Rio Grande turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia), live-trapped near Sonora, Texas, were tested for various blood parasites and disease antibodies before being released in the Yellow River State Forest in Allamakee County, Iowa, in the fall and winter of 1960-61. Haemoproteus meleagridis was found in 79% of the 39 turkeys· Salmonella pullorum in 15%; and chicken embryo lethal orphan virus (CELO) antibodies in 1 of 9 birds tested for evidence of that disease. Ornithosis was found in one pooled sample of serum that involved 4 birds but it was absent in 15 birds. No evidence was detected for Salmonella …

Digestion Rate Of The Clear Lake Black Bullhead, Richard J. Baur Jan 1970

Digestion Rate Of The Clear Lake Black Bullhead, Richard J. Baur

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the summers of 1967 and 1968, digestion rate and daily food consumption of yearling black bullheads (Ictalurus melas) fed chironomid larvae in the laboratory were compared with similar data for bullheads feeding in Clear Lake. Fish were starved for 3 days and force-fed 0.20 g or 0.30 g of chironomid larvae (Chironomus riparius). Stomachs were mostly empty of food 12 hours after force-feeding. Analysis of covariance showed that the amount of food digested depended on the weight of food fed and time allowed for digestion. Tripling the size of the force-fed meal increased digestion rate 2.4 times. The …

Some Factors Affecting The Nest-Cleaning Behavior Of Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera), Harold A. Borchers Jan 1970

Some Factors Affecting The Nest-Cleaning Behavior Of Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera), Harold A. Borchers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Glass-paned observation hives were used to study the behavior of nestcleaning in American Foulbrood-resistant honey bees. Transplanted-dead brood in comb inserts was used to determine the rate of removal of dead brood. Dead brood located within the brood nest was removed faster than dead brood located in other areas. Strong nectar flow appeared to exert a positive influence on the rate of removal of dead brood. Comparisons made between the responses of honey bees toward brood killed by American Foulbrood and brood killed by hydrogen cyanide showed inconsistencies that indicate the possibility of unknown environmental factors.

Transitory Effects Of Dimethyl Sulfoxide On The Electrical Properties Of Isolated Frog Skin, David M. Baumann, Jewett Dunham Jan 1970

Transitory Effects Of Dimethyl Sulfoxide On The Electrical Properties Of Isolated Frog Skin, David M. Baumann, Jewett Dunham

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The experiments indicate that when DMSO-Ringer's solutions are applied to the outside of the frog skin, the electrical potential difference across the skin decreases while the short circuiting current increases slightly. Ringer's solutions containing DMSO applied to the inside of the skin caused both the short circuiting current and the potential difference across the skin to decrease. These observations appear to be directly related to the concentration of DMSO-Ringer's applied. The observed effects are discussed with respect to possible changes in the skin brought about by the DMSO and the relationships of these phenomena to active transport functions of the …

Is Cold Acclimatization Necessary For Mammalian Hibernation, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Mary A. Folk, Ferdinand Kreuzer Jan 1970

Is Cold Acclimatization Necessary For Mammalian Hibernation, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Mary A. Folk, Ferdinand Kreuzer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

(1) In this study hibernator rodents were exposed to a warm environment and then a cold environment to determine whether cold acclimatization is necessary to permit a hibernator to go into dormancy. Four species were tested in September: hedgehogs, woodchucks, Glis dormice, and Eliomys dormice. With three species, (hedgehog, woodchuck, Eliomys dormice) if the rodents went into hibernation at all, they were capable of doing this within 24 to 48 hours after being removed from a warm environment. (2) Those individuals which hibernated directly after being placed in a cold environment, had not shown thermal ability in the warm environment. …

Preliminary Results Of A Statistical Analysis Of A Long-Term Limnological Study Of The Coralville Reservoir, William D. Wade, Donald B. Mcdonald Jan 1970

Preliminary Results Of A Statistical Analysis Of A Long-Term Limnological Study Of The Coralville Reservoir, William D. Wade, Donald B. Mcdonald

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Coralville Reservoir, located on the Iowa River upstream from Iowa City, has been the subject of an intensive limnological study for the past five years. Interpretation of the physical, chemical and biological data obtained was difficult due to the large numbers of parameters measured and the frequency of sampling. The application of various statistical methods was undertaken in order to aid in analysis of the data. Preliminary correlation analyses yielded some meaningful correlations but had severe limitations. Auto-covariance and auto-correlation analysis for each parameter as well as cross-covariance and correlation tests between a number of parameters yielded useful data …

A Call For The Study Of Iowa Rivers, Richard V. Bovbjerg Jan 1970

A Call For The Study Of Iowa Rivers, Richard V. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The year around study of Iowa's rivers would provide a priceless body of data. The physical and chemical data, the biological data are needed so that the state may evaluate the progress of quality control in the crucial years ahead. The state has hundreds of men capable of doing such studies in local areas (high school, Jr. college, and college instructors in science). A massive approach could yield state-wide data quickly and enable many scientists to be useful scientifically and socially. This could involve many students of all ages who are eager to work and learn.

A Preliminary Faunal Study Of The Upper Little Sioux River, Richard V. Bovbjerg, Nancy L. Pearsall, Michael L. Brackin Jan 1970

A Preliminary Faunal Study Of The Upper Little Sioux River, Richard V. Bovbjerg, Nancy L. Pearsall, Michael L. Brackin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several stations of the Little Sioux River were sampled from the Minnesota headwaters to the confluence of Milford Creek. The river changes from intermittent, ponded headwaters to continuously flowing stretches with a concomitant shift in the fauna of increasing downstream diversity of species. While the study of only one summer is reported here, it is hoped that further studies on this and other rivers would be encouraged so that biologists will have a biotic baseline to follow future changes and hopefully to be the basis for suggested water quality control of the future.

Caryophyllaeid Cestodes From Four Species Of Carpiodes (Teleostei: Catostomidae), Dennis D. Williams, Martin J. Ulmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The caryophyllaeid cestode fauna of four species of carpsuckers was investigated. Four hundred and thirty hosts from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska were examined (Aug. 1967-Dec. 1968) and 260 (60%) were parasitized. Four species of caryophyllaeids were found, of which Spartoides wardi and Biacetabulum carpiodi were most abundant. B. carpiodi exhibits a definite seasonal periodicity in spring and early summer, but none appears to exist for S. wardi. Single infections of Glaridacris confusa and Monobothrium sp. were also encountered.

The Effects Of Ddt And Sevin On Litter Decomposition And Litter Fauna, Diana J. Bodtker, Phyllis J. Kingsbury Jan 1970

The Effects Of Ddt And Sevin On Litter Decomposition And Litter Fauna, Diana J. Bodtker, Phyllis J. Kingsbury

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A comparison of the effects of spraying with DDT, Sevin or water on litter decomposition and litter fauna was made, using a litter bag method. During the thirteen week experimental period no significant differences were found between the rate of decomposition in the litter receiving the three different treatments. Twenty-four hours after spraying the number of Collembola was greatly reduced in the Sevin treated plots. At the end of the experimental period the reduction of fauna other than mites or Collembola was significant at the .01 level as compared to the effects of Sevin or water.

Inorganic Qualitative Analysis In Freshman Chemistry, Theodore S. Prokopov Jan 1970

Inorganic Qualitative Analysis In Freshman Chemistry, Theodore S. Prokopov

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A nonsulfide scheme of inorganic qualitative analysis is presented, using solutions of hydrochloric acid, sodium acetate, sulfuric acid, and sodium hydroxide as group reagents. The identification of ions is performed by microscopic examination of crystals formed and also by employing color reactions (spot tests). The purpose of this new approach to qualitative analysis is to eliminate the disagreeable odor and corrosive action of hydrogen sulfide and also to achieve more sharp separation of groups. The new scheme with its crystalloscopic and coloriscopic reactions lead to much more certain analytical results.
