Do Honey Bees Learn To Work? (An Excerpt From Sophomores And Honey Bees), Richard F. Trump Jan 1970

Do Honey Bees Learn To Work? (An Excerpt From Sophomores And Honey Bees), Richard F. Trump

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Another question that your students can answer for themselves is whether bees really inherit their work behavior. That's what we tell our students - that bees are creatures of instinct. And expect our students to believe it. We all know, of course, that too much of our teaching is like that. The least we can do is to offer evidence. Better yet, we can give the students a chance to see for themselves.

High School Biology Training And Introductory College Biology Success, Stanley Whelchel, David Pettus Jan 1970

High School Biology Training And Introductory College Biology Success, Stanley Whelchel, David Pettus

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

High School biology teachers are occasionally concerned with curriculum problems such as: 1. Should BSCS biology be introduced in the curriculum, and if it is, will the students do well in the introductory biology courses in college? 2. Should two biology courses be offered at the high school level, and will the second course really prepare a student better for college biology?

Elementary Science Projects And The Low Group Of Ninth Graders, Richard D. Mcvey Jan 1970

Elementary Science Projects And The Low Group Of Ninth Graders, Richard D. Mcvey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

For many years it has been a common practice in junior high schools to group children according to their ability. In the science class, as well as in the other areas, this has had its advantages and disadvantages. To motivate the student in the low group is a different type of problem than to motivate the students of the average- or high-ability group.

Rallying Cry For Truly Logical Animal Lover, Michael O'Donnell Jan 1970

Rallying Cry For Truly Logical Animal Lover, Michael O'Donnell

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

On attending a recent animal-protection rally, I noticed that a great deal was said about outrages against the nobler and cuddlier animals but nothing at all about the daily slaughter of many millions of microorganisms. I have therefore composed an anthem which I hope will prove a rallying cry for the truly logical animal lover.

Own Group Bias: The Effects Of Individual Competence And Group Outcome, Allen H. Ryen, Arnold Kahn Jan 1970

Own Group Bias: The Effects Of Individual Competence And Group Outcome, Allen H. Ryen, Arnold Kahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although much human interaction occurs in intergroup situations, few studies have examined the effects of individual and group outcomes on attitudes toward own and other group. The present study examined the effects of individual and group competence on attraction toward own and other group. The task was a simulated football game whose outcomes for individual and for group were manipulated by the experimenter. Prior to engaging in the contest, team members displayed an own group bias. Furthermore, winning increased the preference for own group and losing decreased this preference. Winning or losing more than one game had little effect on …

Esterase Activity In Developing Pods Of Soyheans, Richard S. Fawcett, Peter A. Peterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Four stages of soybean pod development of four varieties of Glycine max were surveyed for esterase enzymes by starch-gel electrophoresis. Differences in esterase banding patterns occur among the four varieties investigated. Enzyme changes accompanying pod development were observed. Pod collection procedure affected the number of esterase bands visible, with collection in dry ice giving more visible bands than did collection in regular ice.

A Method For The Dynamic Evaluation Of The Geotropic Response, Charles R. Granger Jan 1970

A Method For The Dynamic Evaluation Of The Geotropic Response, Charles R. Granger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A procedure for the study of the negative geotropic response in the Coleus stem and Avena coleoptile is presented. Time-lapse photography, employing a motordriven 35mm camera and specially designed chambers, is utilized in recording plant responses. Data from 3" x 7" photographic prints are recorded on computer punch cards, a line of best fit is determined and the rate of geotropic curvature at forty-five degrees calculated. This unique technique of reporting curvature rates emphasizes the dynamic character of the geotropic response and eliminates variation involved in the plant's perceptive mechanism.

Recent Wild Turkey Introductions Into Iowa, Eugene D. Klonglan, Gene Hlavka, H. Lee Gladfelter

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Efforts by the Iowa Conservation Commission to reintroduce wild turkeys into their former range in Iowa have been expanded considerably in recent years. Since the initial release of Rio Grande wild turkeys in the Yellow River State Forest in northeastern Iowa in 1960-61, additional releases have been made at five other sites. Merriam's wild turkeys were liberated in the eastern part of Stephens State Forest in south central Iowa and in Monona County in western Iowa in early 1966. Eastern wild turkeys were stocked in Shimek State Forest in southeastern Iowa in 1965-66, in the western part of Stephens State …

Growth Of The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas) In Tertiary Treatment Ponds, John L. Konefes, Roger W. Bachmann Jan 1970

Growth Of The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas) In Tertiary Treatment Ponds, John L. Konefes, Roger W. Bachmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A series of experimental ponds, utilizing treated sewage effluent as a water source, have been constructed at the Ames Water Pollution Control Plant. Fathead minnow fry were introduced into the ponds in the summer of 1969 and observations were made on their growth rates, reproduction, and food habits during the summer months. Growth was comparable to that previously reported for hatchery ponds. The fish matured by mid-summer and successfully produced a second crop of fry. The use of tertiary ponds for fish production seems to be a useful approach to the conservation of natural resources.

Some Aspects Of Conservation Practices And Agricultural Related Pollutants, Dewey T. Bondurant Jan 1970

Some Aspects Of Conservation Practices And Agricultural Related Pollutants, Dewey T. Bondurant

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sediment is the principal pollutant resulting from soil erosion on agricultural lands. Soil erosion also contributes to the delivery of other agricultural related pollutants to surface waters. Application of practices which control erosion on agricultural lands can be effective in reducing sediment and related pollutants in surface waters. Intensive application of terraces and other practices at critical locations will have the greatest effect on sediment reduction.

The Reproductive Strategy Of The American Goldfinch, Spinus Tristis Tristis, In Iowa, Carol B. Lynch Jan 1970

The Reproductive Strategy Of The American Goldfinch, Spinus Tristis Tristis, In Iowa, Carol B. Lynch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The American Goldfinch, Spinus tristis tristis, begins breeding later than any other bird in the north temperate zone. The breeding season in Iowa extends approximately from early July to late September. Data from observations on 30 nestings (124 eggs) indicate that if the breeding season is divided in half, the percent of eggs hatching is seen to decrease from 87% to 57%, and the percent of young fledging from 95% to 62% in the latter half. There is considerable evidence that breeding is cued by the blooming of thistle (Circium spp.), a plant upon which goldfinches depend for nest-lining …

Helminths From Six Species Of Iowa Bats, Harvey D. Blankespoor, Martin J. Ulmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sixty-four bats, representing six species, namely, Eptesicus fuscus (big brown bat), Lasionycteris noctivagans (silver-haired bat), Lasiurus borealis (red bat), Lasiurus cinereus (hoary bat), Myotis lucifugus (little brown bat) and Pipistrellus subflavus (eastern pipistrel bat), were collected in thirteen counties in Iowa and examined for helminths during October, 1965 to August, 1966. Ten species of trematodes, two species of cestodes and three species of nematodes were identified from these hosts. This study results in twelve new host records for seven trematodes, one cestode and one nematode. Trematodes constitute the major group of helminths recovered, 76.6% of the hosts being parasitized; nematodes …

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Nineteen Brown Thrashers (seven adults, 12 immatures) were carefully examined for trematodes during the summer of 1968. Trematodes were recovered from ten hosts and include the following: Brachylaima sp. (intestine) ; Brachylecithum exochocotyle (gall bladder) ; Lutztrema microstomum (gall bladder) ; Lyperosomum oswaldoi (gall bladder and bile ducts) ; Tanaisia zarudnyi (ureter) ; Urogonimus certhiae (cloaca) ; and U. dryobatae (cloaca). All trematodes represent new locality records and all but B. exochocotyle and L. oswaldoi are new host records.

The Economic Geology Of The Iowa Devonian, Fred H. Dorheim Jan 1970

The Economic Geology Of The Iowa Devonian, Fred H. Dorheim

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Devonian System, in Iowa, is exposed in a belt about 50 miles wide extending along a line from Mason City to Muscatine. With the exception of the Shell Rock Formation the Upper Devonian is essentially elastic, dominantly shale. The Middle Devonian is dominantly carbonate, and the lower Devonian, known only from subsurface, appears to be dominantly chert with minor amounts of carbonate (Parker, 1967).

Surficial Geology, Soils, And Plant Zonation Ross Biological Area, William H. Allen Jr., Betty C. Goettsch, Robert K. Kennedy Jan 1970

Surficial Geology, Soils, And Plant Zonation Ross Biological Area, William H. Allen Jr., Betty C. Goettsch, Robert K. Kennedy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Plant distribution is investigated with regard to geologic, geomorphic, and pedologic influences. Little is known about the soil-plant relationship of native species. This study attempts to develop a basic concept that the native plant zonation can be described in terms of the above three factors simply on the basis of routine field investigations. Further studies may then be designed to bring about a more quantitative understanding of the actual nutrient and moisture regimes under which certain native species will be most commonly found.

A Study Of The Esterification Of 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanediol, Lewis Metzler Naylor Jan 1970

A Study Of The Esterification Of 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanediol, Lewis Metzler Naylor

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this research was to prepare, identify, and characterize 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,.3-cyclobutanediol bischloroacetate using 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol and monochloroacetic acid as starting materials. The synthesis of this diester has not been reported previously.

Catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions were attempted, with the uncatalyzed having, in general, the better yield. The diester, trans-2,2,4,4-tetrametbyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol bischloroacetate (mp, 103.5-104; n22, 1.516-1.520), was isolated from a mixture of the isomers. The trans configuration of the diester was confirmed by comparing known nuclear magnetic resonance spectra to that of the diester. Infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm functional groups. Standard analytical techniques were used to determine chloride …

The Effects Of Training On The Acquisition And Retention Of Listening Skills, Bethlyn Christine Broad Jan 1970

The Effects Of Training On The Acquisition And Retention Of Listening Skills, Bethlyn Christine Broad

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A survey of the definitions of listening demonstrated the confusion that exists regarding the nature of listening. From these definitions a composite definition of listening was formulated. The common factors in these definitions defined listening as an act involving perception of communication and one or more through processes. Despite the lack of a precise definition, an increasing number of courses are offered which purport to teach effective listening. These courses are based on the empirical studies which revealed that listening can be taught. However, this study discovered an equally large number of studies which showed that listening cannot be taught. …

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of One-Minute And Five-Minute Timed Writings In First-Semester Typewriting Instruction, Helen E. Adams

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to determine if reducing the length of timed writings from five minutes to one minute during eight weeks of first semester typewriting would result in lower performance. The control group used 5-minute timed writings during the eight-week period. However, the experimental group used 1-minute timed writings except during the last week of the semester when 5-minute timed-writing posttests were used in both groups.

Community College Salary Practices Applied To Non-Degree Teachers, Lawrence Arthur Boyce Jan 1970

Community College Salary Practices Applied To Non-Degree Teachers, Lawrence Arthur Boyce

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Community colleges throughout the country are hiring many non-degree persons to fill their need for vocational and technical teachers. This study sought to determine how community colleges were currently determining the salaries of non-degree teachers and what problems had occurred as a result. It was hypothesized that (1) community colleges had not made definite salary schedule provisions for nondegree teachers and (2) no interpersonal problems between degree and non-degree teachers had resulted from the use of non-degree teachers. The data for the study were obtained through use of , a questionnaire sent to each community college in Iowa Illinois, plus …
