Into The Crystal Ball For The 1970s, Joe R. Moore Jan 1970

Into The Crystal Ball For The 1970s, Joe R. Moore

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The beginning of a new decade is always an ideal time to reflect upon the past-and the future. Looking back, the decade of the sixties can be characterized as the decade of tumult, the decade of change, the decade of progress-and depending upon one's past experiences-many other adjectives will probably be equally descriptive.

The Iowa Academy Of Science As A Directing Influence In Science Education, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1970

The Iowa Academy Of Science As A Directing Influence In Science Education, Robert W. Hanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The last decade was marked by drastic changes in the studied approach to teaching science and most school subjects. A whole new vocabulary of science education terminology appeared-the process approach, conceptual schemes, Hanson integrated science, audio-tutorial techniques, the multi-media approach, computer-assisted instruction. These and many other phrases can be summed up in the one word innovation, and many educators of the more traditional bent feel a bit uneasy and perhaps defensive about the extent to which innovation is lacking in their teaching.

A False Sense Of "Discovery", Darrell G. Phillips Jan 1970

A False Sense Of "Discovery", Darrell G. Phillips

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Within the past few years the terms "discovery" and "inquiry" have come into vogue in educational circles. These terms, and those of similar connotation, are found in science curriculum programs, magazine and journal articles, and papers presented at professional meetings. It has also become apparent that certain textbook publishers are extremely sensitive to the "in" terms; one finds that such words have been carefully inserted into the introduction or preface of some outdated science textbooks.

The Multi-Media Approach To Biology, Lena M. Keithahn

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"If at first you don't succeed, you are just about average." This flippant statement of a common experience has led to the multi-media approach in an attempt to make the learning of biology for the average sixteen year old who scores between 35 to 89 on the comprehensive test of the ITED more meaningful and successful.

An Analysis Of The Class Method Of Piano Instruction, Zoe Ann Abrahamson Jan 1970

An Analysis Of The Class Method Of Piano Instruction, Zoe Ann Abrahamson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study has analyzed the merits of class piano instruction for the purpose of suggesting effective curriculum and group teaching technics. When compared with the aims of private instruction, the goals and purposes of the class approach placed more emphasis upon group dynamics as a means of developing better musical understanding.

Suggestions were offered pertaining to grouping, class management, goals, approaches, and course content for pre-piano musicianship classes, for piano classes comprised of seven and eight year old children, and for adult piano classes. Graded lists of music materials were compiled as a guide for instruction. Desirable equipment and floor …

Experiences In Scale Of Sculpture For Architectural Sites, Maurice Lee Anderson Jan 1970

Experiences In Scale Of Sculpture For Architectural Sites, Maurice Lee Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

My recent interest in the use of cubic forms and rectangular solids led to the use of shapes that have a dynamic emphasis through the horizontal and vertical stresses of movement which interact in terms of structural and spatial dynamics. I have organized these shapes around an imaginary vertical axis which tends to produce a stasis or symmetrical equilibrium. Through the medium of photomontage I have created a series of sculptural juxtapositions or interactions between my work and several local environments. An important outgrowth of my creative work has been the mobility in scale that a piece appears to have …

The Butterflies Of Nebraska, Kurt Duane Johnson Jan 1970

The Butterflies Of Nebraska, Kurt Duane Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A ten-year study of the distribution and taxonomy of Nebraska butterflies was undertaken. Data were compiled through extensive collecting throughout the state together with examination of museum collections, private collections, and published records. One hundred and sixty-seven species were recorded from the state, but evidence indicates that the number of species in the fauna has decreased with time, with 18% of the fauna recorded only prior to 1960. Some forty typically-western montane taxa were found in the coniferous forests of western Nebraska, Several of these western species have extended their distributions eastward. In contrast, a few species with eastern and …

The Determination Of Stability Constants For Some Metal Chelates Of O-Phenylene-Dinitrilo-Tetraacetic Acid, Charles E. Faraci Jan 1970

The Determination Of Stability Constants For Some Metal Chelates Of O-Phenylene-Dinitrilo-Tetraacetic Acid, Charles E. Faraci

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The chelating agent, o-phenylene-dinitrilo-tetraacetic acid, has been synthesized, by a method previously reported, and characterized. The formation constants for the reactions between a group of divalent metal ions and the chelon, o-phenylene-dinitrilo-tetraacetic acid, have been determined potentiometrically with a mercury electrode. The stability constants for the metal ions Hg2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ were determined. Log K values of 18.6, 7.2, 11.8, 13.3, 13.4, 13.7, and 14.1, respectively, were found at an ionic strength of 0.1 and 25°C. These stability constants were compared to those of ethylene-dinitrilo-tetraacetic acid chelate. Some of the effects of ligand structure on …

FonologíA Y FonéTica Segmental Del EspañOl, José Luis Freire Jan 1970

FonologíA Y FonéTica Segmental Del EspañOl, José Luis Freire

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Of primary concern in this thesis was the description of segmental sounds in Spanish. Special care was taken to maintain an inductive approach to the problem. It was felt that the adherence to this type of method would facilitate the rapid yet thorough understanding of a particular linguistic point by the student, by compelling him to formulate a generalization after studying a body of carefully selected data.

The Development Of Behavior And The Ossification Of Bone In The Bantam-Chick Embryo, Christine M. Hagedorn Jan 1970

The Development Of Behavior And The Ossification Of Bone In The Bantam-Chick Embryo, Christine M. Hagedorn

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The objectives of this study were (1) to establish an index of standard behavior, and (2) to establish an index of skeletal development for each day of embryonic development for the bantam-chick embryo. The principal method used was direct observation of the embryo. This was done by removing the shell from the blunt end of the egg and applying a coating of vaseline to the exposed inner-shell membrane. The bones observed in skeletal development were made visible by alizarin red S stain. Behavioral activities of the bantam-chick embryo included trunk movements, head lifting, head turning, wing movements, leg movements, jerking, …

A Study Of The Specifications And Playing Qualities Of The Bb Soprano Clarinet Mouthpiece, Ardella Cullen Hein Jan 1970

A Study Of The Specifications And Playing Qualities Of The Bb Soprano Clarinet Mouthpiece, Ardella Cullen Hein

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

My visual thesis, titled "Sojourn," is made up of 12 paintings, plus four preparatory drawings and color studies. Collectively, these works are an ongoing narrative commentary on vagaries of the human condition as I have observed them during the past 35 or so years of my adult life. While each of the paintings can be viewed separately, they were intended from the start to be shown together, as I believe the similarities in their subject matter and overall composition have a synergistic effect when viewed as a group. All of the paintings were done in acrylic paints on stretched canvas. …

An Analysis Of The Marxist Sympathies Of James Farrell As Seen In The Studs Lonigan Trilogy, Carol Richards Durbala Jan 1970

An Analysis Of The Marxist Sympathies Of James Farrell As Seen In The Studs Lonigan Trilogy, Carol Richards Durbala

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The years immediately preceding the depression, as well as the depression years, produced an abundance of famous writers. Typically the sensitivity of the creative man led him to feel every pang of hunger, every breath of cold. He was oppressed by poverty when prosperity was flourishing. He cried in rage as big business came into vogue. He despaired at the extreme contrasts existing across the country. When the Marxists of the day took up arms against these problems, the writer armed himself with his most effective weapon -- the pen. Then, as now, the news was colored by the men …
