A Study Of Chromium (Iii) Complexes Of O-Phenylenediamine, Barbara J. Kacena Jan 1972

A Study Of Chromium (Iii) Complexes Of O-Phenylenediamine, Barbara J. Kacena

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Chromium(III) complexes of o-phenylenediamine were prepared by mixing hot 1-butanol solutions of transtetraaquadichlorochromium(III) chloride 2-hydrate and o-phenylenediamine. From the elemental analyses of four preparations, the empirical formula was determined to be CrCl3C12H18N4O1.7. It was found, by the analysis of infrared spectra, that o-phenylenediamine acted as bidentate ligands and, by chloride analysis, that each molecule of the complex contained one free chloride ion. The following formula was proposed: [CrCl2(C6H8N2)2]Cl·xH2O.

The Effects Of 2-Deoxyglucose On The Atp Consumption In Cell Cultures, Darrell D. Young Jan 1972

The Effects Of 2-Deoxyglucose On The Atp Consumption In Cell Cultures, Darrell D. Young

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Cultures of Chinese Hamster Cells (CCL 16, Don Strain) were treated with 2-Deoxyglucose over varying lengths of time in order to compare the mitotic index with the rate of adenosine triphosphate synthesis. Treatment with the glucose analog reduces both the mitotic index and the ATP level by nearly 50 percent. The relationship to the Swann "energy reservoir" hypothesis is also discussed.

New Conceptual Design Of The Isu Tornado-Simulation Wind Tunnel, C. T. Hsu Jan 1972

New Conceptual Design Of The Isu Tornado-Simulation Wind Tunnel, C. T. Hsu

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Iowa ranks fifth in the nation for the annual tornado frequency per area. Although solutions for avoiding tornado formation are rather remote, if not impossible, understanding this formation process and its mechanism of operation must be advanced first. Current theories are still unsatisfactory and inadequate. A new concept of tornado modeling, resulting from extensive tornado literature studies and swirling rocket nozzle flow research, is proposed here. Based on this concept, the Iowa State University tornado-simulation wind tunnel is designed for better simulation of tornado flow.

A Study Of Physics, Chemistry And Advanced Science Enrollments In Iowa's Area Ten With Reference To Enrollment Patterns In The State Of Iowa, Richard E. Mcqueen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This study was initiated under the assumption that advanced science courses could be shown to detract from physics enrollments, thus establishing one possible cause of the continuously declining enrollments in physics in Iowa's Area Ten and nationwide. Initial work failing to support this relationship, a study of chemistry enrollments was added, chemistry enrollments being felt to be indicative of emphasis on science, with or without an advanced course. Information on enrollments in Area Ten was taken directly from teachers' responses to a questionnaire on such enrollments for 1969-70, received from all 43 public and seven parochial, private or special schools …

The Only True Multi-Medium Is The Human Being, Milbert Krohn

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

I would like to react to the present mood of our culture by paraphrasing a statement from Lewis Mumford's great book, The Myth of the Machine. "What is needed in education today is a multi-medium for teaching so varied, so many sided, so flexible, so responsive to human need, that it can serve every human purpose .... " And then he says, "The only true multi-medium remains the human organism itself."

Distribution Of Sculpins (Pisces: Cottidae) In Iowa, Marlin Johnson Jan 1972

Distribution Of Sculpins (Pisces: Cottidae) In Iowa, Marlin Johnson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Trout waters in Iowa were surveyed for the presence of sculpins. They were found to be confined to a few cool, spring fed streams in the northeast comer of the state. The slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus Richardson) is the most prevalent of the two species found. The first valid records for the presence of mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdi Girard) in the state are provided.

The Distribution Of Fecal Coliforms In Catfish Creek, Dubuque County, Iowa, Bruce Kyles

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of Fecal coliform distribution at the lower end of Catfish creek in Southern Dubuque County, Iowa was conducted from November 4 until December 30, 1970. The creek's mouth is approximately 1/4 mile below the outflow pipe of the Dubuque wastewater treatment plant on the Mississippi River. The plant presently has only primary treatment, but a new plant is scheduled to begin operation soon. This and subsequent studies will show the actual effect on the surrounding environment of introducing secondary treatment to a primary wastewater treatment plant. It was found that the contamination levels below the Dubuque wastewater treatment …

The Fighting Word Doctrine From Chaplinsky To Brown, Franklyn S. Haiman Jan 1972

The Fighting Word Doctrine From Chaplinsky To Brown, Franklyn S. Haiman

Iowa Journal of Communication

On April 11, 1971, nineteen-year old Robert Vitek of Shaker Heights, Ohio, was stopped and ticketed for speeding by University Heights Police Sergeant Jay McKenna. While the officer was filling out his ticket, Vitek called McKenna a "pig." Judge Manuel Rocker of the Shaker Heights Municipal Court later found Vitek guilty of abusing a police officer, fined him $100, and sentenced him to spend three hours in a pigsty so that he might learn to "distinguish the difference between a pig and a police officer."1 Since the young man in question apparently was not discontented with his sentence, this …

A Slide-Tape Introduction To A Unit On The American Indian, Linda L. Jones Jan 1972

A Slide-Tape Introduction To A Unit On The American Indian, Linda L. Jones

Graduate Research Papers

In order to develop a curriculum which is more relevant to student interests and the school's needs, the librarian and teacher have certain duties to perform. The teacher defines the objectives desired; the librarian provides and develops media which achieve these bjectives. Therefore, the librarian and the Instructional Media Center are the best sources not only for commercially produced materials hut for those which the school produces. Possibly the most effective area to produce materials would be in units not covered adequately by the textbook, in this case, the American Indian.

A Study On How The Male And Female Are Portrayed In Children’S Literature, Diane Jean Reed Jan 1972

A Study On How The Male And Female Are Portrayed In Children’S Literature, Diane Jean Reed

Graduate Research Papers

To the majority of Americans, women's liberation is a common term among most circles. Just recently another group is capturing the headlines and will be gaining more support with this publicity. This group has coined the name "Feminists on children's Media." Their attacks are becoming greater as more parents, librarians, and concerned citizens become actively involved in the way women and men are stereotyped in both juvenile literature and school textbooks. Previously, critics had concentrated on the intermediate level of reading, while now, more are becoming interested in picture books and beginning readers.

Critical Analysis Of Mother Goose, Jeanne Opperman Jan 1972

Critical Analysis Of Mother Goose, Jeanne Opperman

Graduate Research Papers

Nursery rhymes have been considered trifles until comparatively recent times and consequently were never taken too seriously. It has only been with the increased interest in the science of folk-lore that they have begun to attract attention and their true purpose and meaning discovered.

My curiosity about the origin of Mother Goose rhymes · came through a course taken in children's literature. I wrote a paper at that time on some of my findings and observations. This paper is an enlargement and updating of that project including more information from historical sources, a study of selected foreign editions and some …

A Mutation Limiting The Development Of Red Pigment In Betta Splendens, The Siamese Fighting Fish, Gene A. Lucas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Evidence is provided for an undescribed mutation eliminating red pigment in Bettas. Genetic data suggest a recessive gene, symbolized "nr" (for non-red) is responsible. No evidence of linkage with the few previously described mutations in Bettas was found. Interaction with other color mutations provides an assortment of clearly distinguishable phenotypes.
