Iowaville: A Possible Historic Ioway Site On The Lower Des Moines River, Dean F. Straffin Jan 1972

Iowaville: A Possible Historic Ioway Site On The Lower Des Moines River, Dean F. Straffin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In Iowa, the Ioway and Oto Indians bridge the gap between the historically known Indians inhabiting Iowa, and the long cultural continuum delineated by archaeological research on prehistoric sites. Few historic Ioway sites are known today, particularly in southeast Iowa. The recently discovered Iowaville site may contribute substantially to our knowledge of scantily documented Ioway Indians, and may shed light on relationships with the prehistoric Oneota culture.

Waterfowl Lead Poisoning Studies At Forney's Lake, Iowa, Richard A. Bishop Jan 1972

Waterfowl Lead Poisoning Studies At Forney's Lake, Iowa, Richard A. Bishop

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Forney's Lake in Fremont County is a popular waterfowl concentration area along the Missouri River with a history of lead poisoning of mallards. About 1,500 mallards died from lead poisoning in 1960 and about 2,500 in the winter of 1965 and 1966. A total of 143 bottom samples taken in 1966 and 1967 indicated an average of 1.6 pellets per square foot were available to waterfowl. Lead poisoning losses on this area can be minimized by regulating water levels after the hunting season to move the birds elsewhere.

Preparation Of Dibenzylidenecycloalkanones And Their Mixed Hydride Reductions, James E. Privett, Rodger Miller, Leon Stidfole

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A number of dibenzylidenecycloalkanones were prepared by a base condensation reaction of the cycloalkanone with benzaldehyde or a substituted benzaldehyde. The products were then subjected to a mixed hydride reagent (3 AlCl3-1 LiAlH4) to give olefins or tautomeric mixtures depending on the method of reaction.

The Schmitt Cave, John L. Reese Jan 1972

The Schmitt Cave, John L. Reese

Faunal Analysis Of The Schmitt Site, Ralph E. Eshelman Jan 1972

Faunal Analysis Of The Schmitt Site, Ralph E. Eshelman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A faunal analysis on the animal remains recovered from the Schmitt Site shelter was conducted to supplement the formal archeological report by John L. Reese (Proc. Iowa Acad. Sci., 79 (2): 56-58, 1972. Animal remains suggest that the valley in which the site was situated had permanent water, an oak-hickory forest interspersed with meadows, and prairies above the valley on the flatlands. Little if any climatic change has taken place since the occupation of the site. The shelter probably was never occupied permanently, but was used periodically as a camp.

The Nature Of The Ascus Wall: A Preliminary Study, Carl Malone Jan 1972

The Nature Of The Ascus Wall: A Preliminary Study, Carl Malone

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The ultrastructure of the ascus wall of five free-living and two lichenized Ascomycetes is briefly described. The unitunicate ascus is interpreted to be two layered, and the bitunicate ascus is interpreted to be four layered. It is suggested that the terms "single layered" and "two layered" not be used synonymously with the terms "unitunicate" and "bitunicate" respectively.

Waterfowl Harvest On Keokuk Pool, Mississippi River, 1969 And 1970, Stephen Douglas Wilds Jan 1972

Waterfowl Harvest On Keokuk Pool, Mississippi River, 1969 And 1970, Stephen Douglas Wilds

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was conducted during the autumns of 1969 and 1970 to gain insight into the effects of hunting on the large waterfowl population of the Keokuk Pool. Objectives of the project were to determine: (1) species composition of the harvest, (2) chronology of the kill, (3) significance of the "bonus" scaup season, and (4) species selectivity by hunters. Daily hunting record sheets were maintained by cooperating hunters and provided most of the harvest data. Bag checks and hunting party observations yielded additional information. Over 3, 788 man-days were spent hunting waterfowl on the Keokuk Pool in 1970. Approximately 8,700 …

Summer Range And Habitat Preferences Of Bobwhite Quail On A Southern Iowa State Game Area, Lloyd A. Crim, William K. Seitz Jan 1972

Summer Range And Habitat Preferences Of Bobwhite Quail On A Southern Iowa State Game Area, Lloyd A. Crim, William K. Seitz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In June through Aug. 1971, 13 bobwhite quail (9 cocks, 4 hens) were tracked by using radio telemetry techniques to determine summer range and habitat preferences. Of the 13 birds tracked on and near the Mt. Ayr Game Management Area, 7 provided movement data for a period of greater than 4 days. Five of the 7 also provided useful information on habitat preferences. Average lineal daily movement was 442 yards. Average daily range dimensions were 248 (length of range) x 78 (width) yards, and average total range dimensions were 805 x 518 yards. Grassy upland areas were the most prominent …

Are The Nematodes Syngamus Trachea And Syngamus Merulae Synonymous?, Harold B. Bates Jr. Jan 1972

Are The Nematodes Syngamus Trachea And Syngamus Merulae Synonymous?, Harold B. Bates Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Most criteria for differentiating species within the genus Syngamus have been found to be highly variable. Because of this high variability in morphological characteristics, some investigators feel that many of the species within the genus Syngamus are synonyms of S. trachea. Morphological and experimental studies were conducted to ascertain the taxonomic status of S. merulae. Both morphological and experin1ental data indicated that S. merulae should be maintained as a separate species.

A Preliminary Stratigraphic Study Of The Galena Group Of Winneshiek County, Iowa, C. O. Levorson, A. J. Gerk Jan 1972

A Preliminary Stratigraphic Study Of The Galena Group Of Winneshiek County, Iowa, C. O. Levorson, A. J. Gerk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The rocks of the Galena Group have proved to be problematic in correlation. This problem is due to a variable lithofacies development. A preliminary investigation, although based upon exposures studied just within Winneshiek County, provides a method for field identification in Iowa of stratigraphic units currently used by the Illinois State Geological Survey within Illinois. Units under consideration at this time are restricted to the Dunleith, Wise Lake, and Dubuque Formations. Methods of identification and correlation employ in part such physical features as sequences of nodular chart bands, discontinuity surfaces, and sparry calcarenite bands. Investigation has disclosed a close relationship …

Engineering Solutions To Environmental Problems, Richard B. Miller Jan 1972

Engineering Solutions To Environmental Problems, Richard B. Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The environmental problems that we face today are largely associated with what we call the "good life." The "good life" consists of lots of leisure time, low cost of goods, lots of modem conveniences, etc. This means the convenience of prepackaged foods, throw-away containers, and all kinds of disposables. The free time gives us lots of time to travel, recreation, etc. We're able to afford it because we have mass production made possible primarily by electrical energy. We like to travel so we need lots of transportation: automobiles, airplanes, etc. Our income has gone up faster than our costs, and …

Effects Of Ddt On The Density And Diversity Of Tardigrades, Gary W. Barrett, Ronald G. Kimmel Jan 1972

Effects Of Ddt On The Density And Diversity Of Tardigrades, Gary W. Barrett, Ronald G. Kimmel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Twenty lichen-bearing tree bark samples were collected from DDT sprayed American elm trees (Ulmus Americana L.) in central Iowa. Twenty comparable samples were collected from an adjacent nontreated habitat. A tardigrade density of 4 individuals collected from the treated habitat was found to differ significantly (P < .01) from a density of 97 individuals collected from the non-treated area. Margalef's diversity index (D=S-1/1n N) determinations were found to be 0.00 and 0.44 for the treated and non-treated habitats, respectively. Tardigrade species organization within the nontreated habitat did not differ significantly from that as predicted by MacArthur's broken-stick model, suggesting that tardigrade species occupy contiguous, non-overlapping niches within a …

Some Diatoms In Lacustrine Sediments Of Pillsbury And Sylvan Lake Beds In Northwest Iowa, James J. Hungerford Jan 1972

Some Diatoms In Lacustrine Sediments Of Pillsbury And Sylvan Lake Beds In Northwest Iowa, James J. Hungerford

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Diatom populations in two cores of lake sediments from Northwest Iowa have been analyzed as part of an investigation into the history of postglacial sediments in this region. The three member strata sequence of sediments indicate lacustrine diatoms were deposited in the upper two members. Diatoms and macroscopic organisms are scarce to non-existent in the deepest member. Evidence indicates that the level where diatom populations were first established represents the original bottom of the lake. Pollens, particularly spruce pollen, found immediately below the upper two members were possibly blown in and mixed with sediments from the receding glacier.

Chronic Centrifugation Of Labyrinthectomized, Growing Turtles, John O. Rice, Charles C. Wunder, Friedrich C. Diecke, Mary M. Clark, Randall K. Kesterson, Jackquelyn G. White, Kathy M. Whiteside Jan 1972

Chronic Centrifugation Of Labyrinthectomized, Growing Turtles, John O. Rice, Charles C. Wunder, Friedrich C. Diecke, Mary M. Clark, Randall K. Kesterson, Jackquelyn G. White, Kathy M. Whiteside

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A 1-G space-based centrifuge will be necessary before controlled, bio-medical weightlessness experiments can be performed. Some argue that centrifuges of prohibitive dimensions are necessary. Labyrinthectomized, hatchling, Red-Eared Turtles (Pseudemys scripta elegans) which had grown to a length of 45 mm at 5 G's (200 rpm 10 cm radius) displayed the same greater shell height (21.7 ± 0.4 vs, 20.0 ± 0.3 mm at 1 G) that was observed at 5 G's with nonlabyrinthectomized, centrifuged turtles. If other effects of centrifugation can also be attributed to artificial gravity rather than rotation, a space-based centrifuge radius as short as 10 cm (1 …

Description Of Background For The Children’S Book, Ice Cream Next Summer, Elaine Rose Govern Jan 1972

Description Of Background For The Children’S Book, Ice Cream Next Summer, Elaine Rose Govern

Graduate Research Papers

Ice Cream Next Summer is not meant to be a trip in nostalgia, although it may well serve that purpose for a reader with first hand experience of ice houses, country stores and their period in American history. It is meant to be, as it was for the author, an investigation into a different time and mood of a slower rural Iowa, a discovery of an out-dated occupational task.

The Library Services And Construction Act: Its Relation To Public Libraries, Kenneth K. Kannenberg Jan 1972

The Library Services And Construction Act: Its Relation To Public Libraries, Kenneth K. Kannenberg

Graduate Research Papers

An official document from the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare states: "The Library Services and Construction Act recognizes the public's need for public library services and the reasons State and local governments have not been able to provide adequate services and buildings. The same document emphasized that the single purpose of the act is "to assist in making public library services available to people who have inadequate services or none at all." To persons in many communities throughout our nation these statements may seem strange because in some localities adequate and even superior library service has been provided for …

The Effects Of Estrogen On Ionized Calcium In Ovariectomized Calciphylactic Rats, Edward Luverne Hatcher Jan 1972

The Effects Of Estrogen On Ionized Calcium In Ovariectomized Calciphylactic Rats, Edward Luverne Hatcher

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This research was an attempt to discover the relationship between estrogen treatment and the serum calcium levels in ovariectomized rats. An attempt was also made to study the possible effects of estrogen on calcium deposition during the calcification process by utilizing the calciphylaxis phenomena as a potential biological model. Concentrations of ionized and total calcium in the serum of ovariectomized rats were measured utilizing a calcium selective electrode system and atomic absorption spectroscopy procedures respectively. This was done following 3- and 6-day treatments with estrogen (0.1 µg). The same analysis was used in the calciphylactic treatment procedures both with and …

The Development Of A Nutrition Education Game For The Expanded Nutrition Program In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Linda Foster Benedict

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem of the study was the lack of entertaining and effective ways to teach nutrition in the youth phase of the Expanded Nutrition Program in Black Hawk County, Iowa. The question of the study was can a game be developed which will teach the participants in the youth phase certain nutritional concepts and be appealing to the youth. The author developed a game for the population in the study which was effective in teaching certain cognitive information about nutrition and appeared to be appealing to them. The development of the game included three main steps--review of commercial games, designing …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Historical Fiction For The Revolutionary Period Of The United States, Glen Wayne Jordan

Graduate Research Papers

I chose to write an annotated bibliography for my research paper for I felt that I needed some knowledge of the kind of book material I will be working with in a secondary school library. This would give me a chance to look over and read many books that I have been unfamiliar with until now.

The Video Tape Recorder, Television And The High School Media Specialist, Margaret Kay White Jan 1972

The Video Tape Recorder, Television And The High School Media Specialist, Margaret Kay White

Graduate Research Papers

An important part of using TV to teach centers around the use of the video tape recorder. A basic videotape recording unit consists of a videotape recorder, a playback monitor, a television camera and a microphone.

Integral to any discussion of the VTR is an investigation of the different aspects of using television for educational purposes. The first step in this paper, therefore, will be a careful exploration of the advantages and disadvantages of television and, indirectly, videotaping, in secondary education.

Without careful planning the VTR can become just another piece of mechanical equipment lost in the closet of a …

Mosquitoes Of Black Hawk County, Iowa, Martin Burdett Christiansen Jan 1972

Mosquitoes Of Black Hawk County, Iowa, Martin Burdett Christiansen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Mosquito populations of Black Hawk County, Iowa, were studied during the summers of 1970 and 1971. The primary sampling technique was the New Jersey light trap with supplementary collections of biting adults to determine species of importance to man. Twenty-two species of mosquitoes were collected in the county. This represents ten species more than had been previously reported from Black Hawk County. Information is presented on the relative abundance and seasonal succession of each species. Aedes vexans (Meigen) and A. trivittatus (Coquillett) were the primary pests of man, occurring from June through August. Aedes sticticus (Meigen) ranked as the third …

Exploration Of Ceramic Sculpture, Ronald Lewis Hahlen Jan 1972

Exploration Of Ceramic Sculpture, Ronald Lewis Hahlen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem was the creation of ceramic sculpture. This was an area I had not explored very much. When I did explore the sculptural range of clay it was difficult to express myself. Slab construction was the first method of exploration into clay sculpture. With this method I could not acquire the shapes necessary in my sculptures. But this slab construction lead me into casting of objects. Airplane models were the final objects to be cast. Slabs of clay were pressed into these airplane casts. These airplane shapes were then assembled and fired in a kiln. To complete the sculpture …

Stilicho: The Man And His Times, David Bliss Hanawalt Jan 1972

Stilicho: The Man And His Times, David Bliss Hanawalt

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this thesis, Stilicho: The Man and His Times, is to study a period of the history of the Roman Empire through the life of Count Stilicho. The purpose is also to appraise the career of this barbarian Roman general in order to give what I think is a fairer evaluation of the man than has been presented by former historians. Stilicho was stigmatized by the historian Eunapius (fl. 400), and though some historians have commented favorably about Stilicho, few have attempted to assess his importance in Roman history. I have treated major interpretations of Stilicho 1 s …
