The Portrayal Of Blacks In Children’S Literature, Ilene Rewerts Jan 1972

The Portrayal Of Blacks In Children’S Literature, Ilene Rewerts

Graduate Research Papers

With the current emphasis on civil rights and the equality of all people, much attention has been given to the minorities in this country. One such minority, the American Negro population, is beginning to demand the rights that they have been denied for centuries. Generations of black Americans have lived without recognition--almost invisibly--in America. They have been separated from whites socially and culturally.

As the Negro population has emerged from oblivion, and the attitudes towards these people have changed, educators have begun to evaluate the portrayal of blacks in literature. Literature has always been a mirror of the times, and …

A Brief Study Of The Place Of The Computer In The Library, William Mitchell Andrews Jan 1972

A Brief Study Of The Place Of The Computer In The Library, William Mitchell Andrews

Graduate Research Papers

When considering adapting the computer to library use, there appear to be four general areas where usage would be most practical. The first area might be labeled "library housekeeping operations," which would include the ordering and receiving of monographs and serials,
circulation control of library items and preparation of catalogs and listings of many kinds. The second area would consist of cataloging and allied content analysis operations designed to assign to each item subject identifiers, as well as call number or related classification information. The third area would be composed of storage and retrieval operations, which make it possible for …

The School Librarian And The Elementary Social Studies Curriculum, Gerald Richard Eberle Jan 1972

The School Librarian And The Elementary Social Studies Curriculum, Gerald Richard Eberle

Graduate Research Papers

The social studies curriculum is in an era of transition. It is a complex, multidimensional, often confusing, but tremendously challenging subject. Because research and study in this area double and redouble in very short periods of time, educators face the problem of remaining informed of new developments.

As the school librarian participates in all areas of curriculum planning, a knowledge of theory and practical application is necessary. In the social studies curriculum a review of its evolution in American education is helpful. This includes general aims and objectives, its history in American education, present criticism of its relevance to today's …

A Survey Of The Utilization Of The Video Tape Recorder In Iowa Secondary Schools, Thomas W. Bingaman Jan 1972

A Survey Of The Utilization Of The Video Tape Recorder In Iowa Secondary Schools, Thomas W. Bingaman

Graduate Research Papers

As education in the United States continues to grow in importance, a number of factors that influence the learning process become increasingly significant. The use of educational media in the schools is one of the problems facing teachers and administrators. Technology in the media field has a marked tendency to move ahead much faster that the ability of educators to put these new tools to use. One such example of this dilemma is the video tape recorder.

As more and more Iowa school districts purchase video tape equipment, the question of utilization of this apparatus becomes important. It is necessary …

A Study Of Attitudes Toward Discipline And Discipline Problems In Secondary School Libraries, Marie Allan Jan 1972

A Study Of Attitudes Toward Discipline And Discipline Problems In Secondary School Libraries, Marie Allan

Graduate Research Papers

This research was undertaken as a study of attitudes toward discipline and discipline problems found in secondary school libraries. The topic has, up to the present, been largely ignored. A search of the literature yields only a small amount of material relating to this important topic. Yet we are told, "Every teacher is expected to keep order in his or her own area. No combination of other virtues will compensate for lack of ability to maintain discipline. Weak disciplinarians are discharged far more often than they are retained."

Thus it may be seen that the librarian's success in his field …

Feasibility Of Commercial Vegetable Production In Western Iowa As A Boost To Agricultural And Rural Development, M. Leron Robbins, Kermit J. Hildahl Jan 1972

Feasibility Of Commercial Vegetable Production In Western Iowa As A Boost To Agricultural And Rural Development, M. Leron Robbins, Kermit J. Hildahl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Yield and quality of several kinds of vegetables grown on plots in Iowa's Missouri River Valley were high, indicating great potential for commercial production of high-value crops. The availability of water; the light, fertile soils present in parts of the Valley and the reasonably long growing season make the Valley potentially an even greater food-producing area than it is presently. Commercial vegetable production in the Valley could be expected to increase farm income, stimulate the economy of local small towns, and reduce the migration of rural people to urban areas.

Philosophy Of Environmental Regulation, Richard H. Stanley Jan 1972

Philosophy Of Environmental Regulation, Richard H. Stanley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The American public has become aware of environment. Our world view has suddenly changed to recognize that our resources are limited and that we live in a closed compartment of destiny with all mankind. This new world view is most graphically dramatized by man's space travels. We have seen pictures of spaceship earth. We have seen proof that our ecological system is a closed one. Aside from solar energy, there are no significant inputs or outputs of energy, resources, or wastes. This new world view has far reaching effects. Our earlier world view, particularly in the United States, was one …

A Study Of Some Effects Of Water Chemistry On Growth Of Betta Splendens, Jack A. Gerlovich, Gene A. Lucas Jan 1972

A Study Of Some Effects Of Water Chemistry On Growth Of Betta Splendens, Jack A. Gerlovich, Gene A. Lucas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Experimental (varying water chemistry) and Control (constant water chemistry) quart jars· containing single specimens of the fish were tested over an eighteen-week period. Organisms were weighed before and after this period to determine net growth, possibly associated with changes in the ecosystems. Alkalinity, carbon dioxide, dissolved oxygen, total hardness, nitrates, nitrites, pH, and bacteriological parameters were tested. Statistical analyses revealed that chemical parameters exist correlated with particular light levels. Changes in water chemistry could not be correlated with growth. Information obtained suggests light may affect growth of inhabiting Bettas but more information is needed to confirm this. Certain chemical parameters …

The Relationship Between Pond Bottom Type And Growth Rate Of Western Painted Turtles Chrysemys Picta Belli In Iowa, A Preliminary Report, Anthony J. Quinn, James L. Christiansen Jan 1972

The Relationship Between Pond Bottom Type And Growth Rate Of Western Painted Turtles Chrysemys Picta Belli In Iowa, A Preliminary Report, Anthony J. Quinn, James L. Christiansen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several populations of western painted turtles (Chrysemys picta belli) were sampled during 1970 to determine the possible relationship between turtle growth rate and type of pond substrate. The populations sampled were selected because they existed in lentic habitats that had either highly organic, mud substrates or relatively inorganic, sand substrates. Age determinations based on plastral annuli showed turtles from highly organic substrates to grow more rapidly than those from substrates with less apparent organic matter. Females attained greater size than males in both habitat extremes.

X-Ray Diffraction Analysis Of The Pennsylvanian Clays Of Mahaska County, Harold Dean Anderson Jan 1972

X-Ray Diffraction Analysis Of The Pennsylvanian Clays Of Mahaska County, Harold Dean Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study involved five of the operating open-pit mines of Mahaska County, Iowa, which are located near the eastern edge of the Mid-Continent Basin. The mines were sampled from the underclay to the surface at two foot intervals and the clay fraction was separated and analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Results of this investigation showed that the major component present besides illite and kaolinite in the hulk sample was quartz. However, the quartz was not present in the less-than-two micron fraction. The clay fraction analysis varied from 38 percent to 60 percent kaolin and 17 percent to 26 percent illite …

Methods By Which An Elementary School Librarian Can Encourage Teachers To Effectively Utilize And Integrate Nonprint Materials, Andrea Fariss Litterer Jan 1972

Methods By Which An Elementary School Librarian Can Encourage Teachers To Effectively Utilize And Integrate Nonprint Materials, Andrea Fariss Litterer

Graduate Research Papers

As the title suggests, teachers need to be utilizing audiovisual media in an integral fashion and librarians can help them do so. It is now possible to enlarge the educational scope and to enrich learning by not relying solely on verbal communication. It has been suggested that the "applications of technology range from the continued utilization of the book and the blackboard to complete control of the learning programme of large numbers of students by centrally-located computers. The breadth of our educational program is limited only by our wisdom and our willingness to work. Above all, the librarian and teacher …

Public Library Systems In The United States, Alfred Baird Jan 1972

Public Library Systems In The United States, Alfred Baird

Graduate Research Papers

The term "public library systems" has different meanings for both the lay and professional person. To the writer, it meant a large municipal system such as the Chicago Public Library with its forty-one branches1 or a cooperative effort of small Iowa libraries working together.

In reviewing the literature concerning library systems, one finds professionals like Kenneth B. Shaffer stating: "The library system has been an accepted as a reasonable and viable concept for half a century ... While we have employed the term, decade after decade, the meaning of the term "library system" has changed significantly to the point, …

A Brief Study Of Budgeting For The School Library, Reid Edward Spencer Jan 1972

A Brief Study Of Budgeting For The School Library, Reid Edward Spencer

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to briefly study the processes involved in preparing a budget applicable to a school's instructional materials center(hereinafter referred to as the IMC). However, before a library's budget can be studied and analyzed, the practices and theories of general school finance must be examined--where the money comes from and how the overall school budget is prepared. After such an examination, it becomes much easier to narrow the scope of study to the school library budget. At the individual school library level, much of the same planning theory takes place as it does on the district …

Faunal Analysis Of The Lane Enclosure, Allamakee County, Iowa, John T. Jenkins, Holmes A. Semken Jan 1972

Faunal Analysis Of The Lane Enclosure, Allamakee County, Iowa, John T. Jenkins, Holmes A. Semken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Vertebrates collected from the Lane Enclosure, an Oneota archaeological site, suggest that climatic conditions changed from prairie producing conditions circa 1465 to a more moist, cooler forest situation between 1620 and 1740. A change of this magnitude would place the Canadian biotic province in northeast Iowa late in the occupation period. The site certainly was occupied in fall and winter, possibly in spring and summer. If the small sample from the five radiocarbon dated storage pits is representative, more fur-bearing animals were trapped after French contact.

Space Travel To The Moon And Kepler's Dream, Paul B. Selz Jan 1972

Space Travel To The Moon And Kepler's Dream, Paul B. Selz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Johann Kepler advocated Copernicus's heliocentric theory in his Dream and Notes. He imagined how a moon dweller would see the solar system and the conclusions he would draw. Then by reversing the point of view to the earth, Kepler showed that the same conclusions would follow. This involved concepts of mass, inertia, gravity, acceleration, velocity, and the driving force in a trip to the moon. Twelve years before Newton's birth in 1642, Kepler published in this little known dream ideas which Newton later developed. Kepler's ideas concerning the moon's distance, motion, and conditions to be met in space are reviewed.

Parametric Relationships Of Conventional Versus Repetitive Loading Triaxial Tests, Darwin E. Fox, J. M. Hoover Jan 1972

Parametric Relationships Of Conventional Versus Repetitive Loading Triaxial Tests, Darwin E. Fox, J. M. Hoover

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This investigation was developed to examine response of a field-mixed asphalt-treated granular base material to 100,000 repetitions of a load whose magnitude was determined by a failure criterion proposed by Hoover (1970), and Fish and Hoover (1969). Axial strain and load at the point of maximum volume of a specimen during a conventional triaxial test appear to produce a "proportional limit," indicating that failure may have started. Axial stress at this point was applied in the repetitive loading triaxial test at the same confining pressure, during which axial strain and pore pressure continuously increased and specimen volume decreased in each …
