The Tides Of The Bay Of Fundy: A Tape-Slide Series, Robert C. Bird Jan 1973

The Tides Of The Bay Of Fundy: A Tape-Slide Series, Robert C. Bird

Graduate Research Papers

Each day over 2 billion tons of water pour into the Bay of Fundy from the Atlantic Ocean. This tremendous surge of water in the form of two rising and falling tides results in a phenomena unequalled on the east coast of North America, and rarely experienced in the rest of the world. The tidal fluctuations produce the second largest whirlpool in the world, waterfalls and rapids that are reversed during high tide, forty to fifty feet tides in some places, and tidal bores that relentlessly advance up rivers in the form of a wave of water.

The manner in …

Pre-And Postsettlement Pollen From A Short Core, Blackhawk Lake, West-Central Iowa, Thompson Webb Iii Jan 1973

Pre-And Postsettlement Pollen From A Short Core, Blackhawk Lake, West-Central Iowa, Thompson Webb Iii

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The pollen within a short core from Blackhawk Lake shows the impact of settlement in the area. The proportions of both ragweed and pigweed pollen increased while the proportions of total arboreal pollen decreased. Among the arboreal pollen types, oak and hickory decreased while elm increased. These changes in the pollen record need to be recognized when samples of modern pollen are used to aid the interpretation of fossil pollen.

Variations In The Catch Success Of Channel Catfish And Carp In Baited Hoop Nets, James Mayhew Jan 1973

Variations In The Catch Success Of Channel Catfish And Carp In Baited Hoop Nets, James Mayhew

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Baits were tested for their ability to attract channel catfish and carp into hoop nets. Treatments tested were cheese alone, soybean cake alone, cheese and soybean cake combined, and an unbaited control. A 4 x 4 Latin Square design was used for the experiment. The factors which influence catch success were assessed by the analysis of variance. Cheese bait was best for increasing the catch success of channel catfish; in nets containing soybean cake the increase was not statistically significant. There were significant differences in the catch success of channel catfish among netting sites and among locations of nets within …

Survival Of Pen-Reared Ring-Necked Pheasants Released In Southeastern Iowa, John F. May, Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1973

Survival Of Pen-Reared Ring-Necked Pheasants Released In Southeastern Iowa, John F. May, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A mass release of 2,465 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) at a single site in previously unoccupied range in southeastern Iowa in the fall of 1970 was evaluated by studying mortality, dispersal, reproduction, and population levels. The spring cock population near the release site, sampled by crowing-count surveys, remained at the same level from 1971 to 1972. A 60% drop in the estimated hen population in the same area was accompanied by a drop in winter sex ratios from 4.1 hens/cock in 1971 (first winter after release) to 1.5 in 1972. These changes are thought due to the addition of young-of-the-year …

The Strange Case Of The Missing Magazine In The Elementary Media Center, Doris Crandall Jan 1973

The Strange Case Of The Missing Magazine In The Elementary Media Center, Doris Crandall

Graduate Research Papers

In this era when new technological advances are continually being made which bring fresh new hardware and software into the media center is there still a place for magazines? The investigation covered by this paper will attempt to determine whether there is justification for standards to include minimum offerings of magazines, or whether this is a medium that has become passe in the wake of new media.

The Current Status Of The Limnology And Bottom Fauna Of Lakes West And East Okoboji, David D. Gale, Everette E. Drevs, Michael P. Gross

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lakes West and East Okoboji, Dickinson County, Iowa, were the site of a 1970 summer investigation on the density and diversity within the macroscopic bottom organisms, physical and chemical measurements of the water and substratum chemistry study. These data on Lake West Okoboji were compared with a 1918 and 1950 study of the macroscopic bottom fauna, water analyses dating from 1934, and oxygen and temperature data from as far back as 1915. The sparse species composition of the bottom fauna has remained unchanged; however, pollution indicator tubificid worms have increased in density. Water analysis, oxygen, and temperature data are little …

A Study Of Expenditures For Materials In Instructional Materials Centers In Iowa High Schools, Janelle Kay Barkema

Graduate Research Papers

Anyone who is familiar with present educational trends is well aware that the multi-media approach to learning has fairly recently become widely accepted and is now the major concern of many educators in their attempt to bring innovative and effective methods of teaching to the forefront. As educators continually strive to make learning process as efficient and exciting as possible, more and more of them are turning to new forms of media. Indeed, the ways in which a student makes use of his new-found responsibility of finding and utilizing information combined with the new international patterns require a variety of …

Notes On An Iscs Visit, Vincent N. Lunetta

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In late January, 1973, I had the opportunity to work with persons in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the evaluation of their ISCS-Level I program. Some of the local innovations in Tulsa, I believe, are noteworthy enough to be brought to your attention. Included below are extracts from a letter I wrote after my visit to Mr. A. Q. Polk, Supervisor of Science in the Tulsa Public Schools. The notes cover ISCS program evaluation and thoughts relating to my school visits.

Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross Jan 1973

Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"Individualized instruction? — I tried it and it didn't work!" This is the statement that is frequently heard at professional meetings and in visiting with teachers. Upon further examination, it is usually found that the individuals making the statement only tried an individualized approach for a very short period of time. The frustrations they had experienced were usually that l) most kids sat around doing nothing, 2) it was impossible to manage the paperwork in keeping track of where each student was, and 3) the time required to develop individualized units and materials just wasn't worth the reward in terms …

Additional Crinoid Specimens From The Shellrock Formation (Upper Devonian) Of Iowa, Harrell L. Strimple, C. O. Levorson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Well preserved crinoids from the Shellrock Formation (Upper Devonian) of Iowa are extremely rare. Several well preserved specimens collected by one of us (Levorson) have led to new generic assignments of the species originally described as Nassoviocrinus goldringae Belanski, 1928, to Glossocrinus goldringae, n. comb., and of Hexacrinus springeri Thomas to Cerasmocrinus springeri, n. comb. The latter is the type species of Cerasmocrinus, new genus.

What One More Professional Could Do For The West Junior High Library, Terry Dutcher Jan 1973

What One More Professional Could Do For The West Junior High Library, Terry Dutcher

Graduate Research Papers

The West Junior High School faculty consists of 1200 students and fifty-five certified teachers. This figure includes one principal, one vice-principal, three counselors, and one librarian.

As one can see, one librarian, or media specialist, is not enough professional manpower to fully implement the dynamic library program that is needed in West Junior High. To quote from Standards of School Media Programs: •It is recommended that the media center have one media specialist for every 250 students or major fraction thereof.

A Study Of Present And Future Librarians Reasons For A Fine Or No Fine System In Secondary Schools, Robert Leroy Schuiteman Jan 1973

A Study Of Present And Future Librarians Reasons For A Fine Or No Fine System In Secondary Schools, Robert Leroy Schuiteman

Graduate Research Papers

The fifteen practicing librartions were employed in school districts ranging in size from 150 to 900 students.

The questions asked were as follows:

1. Do you, or will you charge fines for overdue library materials?

2. What were, or are the reasons that made you decide to charge or not charge fines?

A. Are these reasons something: you measured or intend to intend to measure?

B. Did, or will student opinion have any bearing on your decision?

Of the fifteen practicing librarians, ten indicated that they did not charge fines and five indicated that they did charge fines.

The Library And The Disadvantaged, Ruth Millar Jan 1973

The Library And The Disadvantaged, Ruth Millar

Graduate Research Papers

The conscience of America woke to the problems of their 'disadvantaged' in the nineteen-sixties. Our public institutions slowly pulled themselves away from the apathy they found themselves mired in; and began at last to try to serve the people they had so long ignored. The public libraries of our cities looked around them and found, much to their surprise, that the middle-class whites they had so long catered to were no longer there. They had been replaced by a group of peoples that now were lumped under the heading 'disadvantaged.' Cornelius L. Golightly, speaking at a conference on the 'disadvantaged', …

A Study Of Career Information Materials In Communications And Media For The Junior High School Student, Pearl Fruth Miller

Graduate Research Papers

Because school-based career development programs under the current career education emphasis, are to become integrated into the total curriculum, every person in the school system has a role to play in helping to develop and implement the program. Teachers need materials to assist them in designing programs, and students need resources in their search for values and career information.

The Electric Company: A Survey Of Its Use In Iowa, Sharon K. Rose

Graduate Research Papers

In Iowa, The Electric Company is broadcast over the IEBN (Iowa Educational Broadcast Network). Approximately 65 percent of the population of Iowa is capable of receiving a clear signal from one of the IEBN stations. According to a national survey by Drs. R. J. Liebert and R. E. Herriott, in the fall of 1972 23 percent of all elementary schools in the United States were using The Electric Company in some way. When the statistics are limited to areas of the country where The Electric Company is actually being broadcast the percentage of schools that are using it in some …

Beatrix Potter Through The Years, Carol Porter Jan 1973

Beatrix Potter Through The Years, Carol Porter

Graduate Research Papers

The investigation into the life and work of Beatrix Potter was prompted by interest in and enjoyment of the work of this author. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was the real extent of the acquaintance with Beatrix Potter. Perhaps the appreciation of the art in this book was even more fundamental. A serious desire for children to be familiar with the original story rather than the reproductions was a factor in wanting to know more about this woman and more about what she had produced.

Effects Of Epinephrine In The Chick Visual System, Robert J. Coppola, Dennis F. Rolek Jan 1973

Effects Of Epinephrine In The Chick Visual System, Robert J. Coppola, Dennis F. Rolek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Studies of the diffuse electroretinogram (ERG) and evoked responses in the optic lobe in the baby chick have shown that epinephrine produces changes in both. Epinephrine produces enhancement of the a-wave and depression of the b- and d-waves in both intact and isolated eyes. In the optic lobe it produces enhancement of both components of the evoked response. The presence of epinephrine in the vertebrate retina and the optic lobe of chicks suggests that these changes may reflect the involvement of epinephrine in synaptic transmission.

The Point System Approach For The Harvesting Of Ducks In Iowa, Richard A. Bishop Jan 1973

The Point System Approach For The Harvesting Of Ducks In Iowa, Richard A. Bishop

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Under this system, different species and sexes of ducks were assigned various point values. The daily bag limit was reached when the point value of the last duck taken, added to the sum of the point values of the other birds already bagged during that day, reached or exceeded 100 points. The point system differs from past conventional regulations by freeing the hunter from the necessity of correctly identifying each duck before shooting in order to remain legal. This system was first tested in Colorado in 1968 and since has been tried on an experimental basis in several states. Hunter …

The Interaction Between The Urinary Trypsin Inhibitor And Trypsin, G. J. Proksch, J. I. Routh Jan 1973

The Interaction Between The Urinary Trypsin Inhibitor And Trypsin, G. J. Proksch, J. I. Routh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Gel filtration and disc electrophoresis were used as simple and fast techniques for the investigation of the interaction and stoichiometry between UTI and trypsin. UTI appears to possess only a single trypsin binding site. The nature of the interaction between the inhibitor and enzyme appears to be dependent on the concentration ratio of the reactants. When UTI is in excess molar concentration, a single binary complex with trypsin of mol. wt. 95,000 is observed. In the presence of a molar excess of enzyme, this macromolecule is no longer observed, but proteins of mol. wt. 41,000 and 20,000 result. The possibility …

Research Needs Related To Erosion And Sediment Control, Paul E. Rosenberry Jan 1973

Research Needs Related To Erosion And Sediment Control, Paul E. Rosenberry

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In an effort to bring soil erosion under control, the Iowa Legislature in 1971 enacted a new law establishing six soil conserving districts with power given to them to require soil conservation practices to he employed when damages occur because of excessive erosion. The main points of this law and their implications are discussed in this report. The report then discusses research needs in the area of sediment pollution. A brief discussion also is included on a research project to be undertaken in this area of research.

Parkinson's Disease, Amantadine Hydrochloride Therapy And Dopa Metabolites, Dee Edward Silver, J. I. Routh, A. L. Sahs, Richard Anderson Jan 1973

Parkinson's Disease, Amantadine Hydrochloride Therapy And Dopa Metabolites, Dee Edward Silver, J. I. Routh, A. L. Sahs, Richard Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In an attempt to clarify the effect of amantadine hydrochloride therapy in Parkinson's disease, dopa metabolites were measured in the urine of 15 patients who were taking this medication. The results indicated that patients on amantadine therapy had lower urinary levels of epinephrine plus norepinephrine than either normal individuals or parkinsonian patients not receiving amantadine. Patients who developed livedo reticularis during amantadine therapy showed a small but significant increase in urinary dopamine levels and a similar decrease in dopac levels, when compared to other patients on amantadine who did not develop livedo reticularis.
