Interdisciplinary Environmental Education Program For Teachers, James E. Murphy

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Environmental education offers a unique opportunity for innovative teaching because no one is around to say, "But, I always did it this way." Thus new environmental programs do not have to overcome the educational inertia of tradition which has stopped many new instructional movements dead in their tracks.

Environmental Education: No Passing Fad, Frederick P. Deluca Jan 1973

Environmental Education: No Passing Fad, Frederick P. Deluca

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Environmental education has received increased attention during the past four years. Most of the fifty states have formulated or are in the process of formulating a state plan for environmental education. Elementary and secondary school curricula continue to reflect increased concern and activity in environmental education. Higher education has responded with modification of traditional courses, design and implementation of new courses, and at some institutions, new degree programs in environmental studies. Interest has not been restricted to the physical and biological sciences; people in social sciences and humanities on all levels have participated and in many instances have been at …

An Association Position Statement On Programs And Budgets Of The National Science Foundation Division Of The Pre-College Education In Science, Michael R. Lerner

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This document is a position statement, together with recommendations, from the National Science Teachers Association relative to educational programs and budgets of the National Science Foundation, particularly at pre-college levels. It is the result of noting with great concern what seems to us to be a serious, threatening decrease in financial support for such educational programs over the past three years, coupled with our firm belief that more and better science education -- not less, either in quantity or quality -- is an imperative for all children and youth in these days of growing concern about societal problems and national …

Comparison Of Vertebrate Communities Of Coralville Reservoir And Cone Marsh, Iowa, William J. Platt Jan 1973

Comparison Of Vertebrate Communities Of Coralville Reservoir And Cone Marsh, Iowa, William J. Platt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The vertebrates in communities comprising a habitat with unpredictable water levels (the Coralville Reservoir) were compared to those present in communities comprising a habitat without severely fluctuating water levels (Cone Marsh). From data on the species of vertebrates and their relative abundance, it was determined that extensive ecosystem simplification had occurred in communities along the Coralville Reservoir. The major characteristics of this simplification were the following: 1) several species with similar modes of feeding were present at Cone Marsh but only species with generalized food habits were present along the Coralville Reservoir; 2) species at the top of food chains …

Profile: Dave Kanellis, Charles Frederick

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Dave Kanellis, a teacher of social studies and environmental studies at West High School in Iowa City, is what one might consider a teacher's teacher. Although Dave was born in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, he has acquired many of the characteristics of a midwesterner, one of which is a down-to-earth approach with people. This characteristic is displayed in many ways in the classroom as well.

A Survey Of The Reading Habits, Library Usage, Subject Preferences, And Achievement Test Scores Of The Ninth And Eleventh Graders In The Colo Community School, Arleyne M. Gildersleeve

Graduate Research Papers

This study is a survey of the library o£ the Colo Junior-Senior High School, Colo, Iowa, during the 1972-1973 school year. It is limited to a strictly local situation, and the information secured and analyzed will be used primarily as a guide in planning future library programs in this particular situation. No attempt was made to do a statistical analysis or correlation. Rather. the conclusions show general trends and areas of weakness and strength. Faults are apparent in the questionnaire, and as always, student responses may or may not be conscientiously given. However, it is hoped that the paper will …

Stratigraphic Crinoid Zonation In Iowa Mississippian Rocks, L. R. Laudon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Iowa Mississippian rocks, rich in fossil crinoidea, lend themselves excellently for stratigraphic zonation. Zone index fossils have been chosen in the basis of stage of evolution and abundance of occurrence. The following crinoid zones are established: North Hill formation, Aacocrinus chouteauensis (Miller), Hampton formation, Rhodocrinites kirbyi (Wachsmuth and Springer), Gilmore City formation, Rhodocrinites serpens (Laudon), Burlington formation, Dolbe Creek member, Cactocrinus proboscidialis (Hall), Haight Creek member, Agaricocrinus planoconvexus Hall, Cedar Fork member, lower part, Azygocrinus rotundus (Yandell and Shumard), upper part, Dorycrinus quinquelobus (Hall), Keokuk formation, transition beds, Eutrochocrinus trochiscus (Meek and Worthen), main limestone unit, Actinocrinites lowei (Hall), Warsaw …

Biological Modeling: A Program To Calculate The Input From Observations On The Output, James O. Osburn Jan 1973

Biological Modeling: A Program To Calculate The Input From Observations On The Output, James O. Osburn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the usual situation, a model is constructed, and coefficients are adjusted until the predicted response to a known stimulus agrees with the observed response to the same stimulus in the real situation. Then the model can be used to predict the response to other stimuli. The reverse situation, while it is of practical importance, has not received much attention. This is the problem of finding the stimulus which would produce an observed response. A published attempt to solve this problem contains a fundamental error. The LaPlace transform method is shown to be applicable, but it is difficult to implement. …

Effect Of Thyroxine On Early Development Of Chick Limb Buds, Suleiman A. Suleiman Jan 1973

Effect Of Thyroxine On Early Development Of Chick Limb Buds, Suleiman A. Suleiman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Transplanted hind limb buds of chick embryos at stage18 were treated with thyroxine, which caused complete growth inhibition at concentrations of 200, 150, and 100 μg/ml. Lower concentrations caused reduction in length and weight as well as decreased number of feather germs. An increase in the enzyme acid phosphatase and number of lysosomes, in the cells of limb buds, were also observed. Increased acid phosphatase reaction was accompanied by decreased amounts of RNA (in treatment with 50 and 70 μg/ml. concentrations), suggesting a correlation between the two thus showing a thyroxine effect on lysosome activity.

Somesthetic Functions In Patients With Brain Disease And Normal Subjects, Harvey S. Levin, Arthur L. Benton Jan 1973

Somesthetic Functions In Patients With Brain Disease And Normal Subjects, Harvey S. Levin, Arthur L. Benton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper summarizes the results of a series of studies of somatosensory function in normal and brain-diseased subjects that were designed to investigate: (1) neural mechanisms in tactile resolution and masking, and; (2) cerebral dominance and somesthesis. Our results are consistent with the possibility that lateral inhibition effects influence tactile resolution and masking. Additional findings suggest that the physiologic mechanisms involved in tactile masking and obscuration in healthy subjects also mediate the pathologic expressions of these phenomena shown by patients with cerebral disease. Studies of hemispheric dominance and somesthesis have indicated that patients with right hemisphere disease often demonstrate bilateral …
