Secondary Science Training Program Enrichment For High School Students, Edward L. Pizzini Jan 1973

Secondary Science Training Program Enrichment For High School Students, Edward L. Pizzini

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

We live in an environment where the success of many educational programs are directly proportional to the amount of external funds appropriated. When federal funding for a program dries up, unfortunately, the program may come to an end. This end is in sight for many of the Secondary Science Training Programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation throughout the nation. However, at the University of Iowa, the SSTP programs are i n t he process of expanding beyond a firm foundation.

Some Reasons For Not Working Toward A Humanistic System

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

There is only one acceptable excuse for not changing: If you really are comfortable with what you are doing and if your students tell you they are really comfortable, then don't change. Ask your students and see how they feel. If you say you'd like to change but can't for any of the reasons above, you're copping out!

A plan of action to improve mathematics, social science, and science education has emerged as a result of over two years of meetings and planning conferences with school personnel representing all academic levels of education in Iowa. In addition, a seven-week Leadership Development Conference (LDC) was held this summer at The University of Iowa involving the regional coordinators and many of their "team" chairmen representing one of the various emphases of Project ASSIST, i.e., in-service and pre-service programs, community involvement, assessment, and student programs. Seventeen coordinators and over thirty program chairmen participated in the LDC.

A Pennsylvanian Ophiuroid From Southwestern Iowa, Roger K. Pabian, Harrell L. Strimple Jan 1973

A Pennsylvanian Ophiuroid From Southwestern Iowa, Roger K. Pabian, Harrell L. Strimple

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A collection of fossils from the Doniphan Shale, Virgilian Stage, Upper Pennsylvanian contains a small ophiuroid identified as Archaeophiomusium burrisi (Miller). The discovery of the Iowa specimen lowers the lower boundary of the range-zone of this species and considerably extends its geographic distribution. The ophiuroid is associated with at least seventeen other species of marine invertebrates. Like specimens collected from the Permian of Kansas and Oklahoma, the Iowa specimen is in rock classed as shelly fades sensu LaPorte (1962).

Teaching For Affective Learning, Gary E. Downs Jan 1973

Teaching For Affective Learning, Gary E. Downs

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

During the last ten years, many innovations have been aimed at reconstructing science education from kindergarten through high school. These efforts have produced more up- to-date information which was supposed to reflect more nearly the scientific enterprise as it is today. Gallagher (1971) contends that the course-content improvement projects have failed to show this, and they have failed to show that science is a significant cultural force.

The Experimental Determination Of The Eddy Current Effects On The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Of Aluminum Wires, Mark Allen Butterworth Jan 1973

The Experimental Determination Of The Eddy Current Effects On The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Of Aluminum Wires, Mark Allen Butterworth

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An experimental determination has been made of the eddy current effects on the nuclear magnetic resonance lineshapes of Al²⁷ wires. Eddy currents in the metal result from the applied radio frequency (r-f) field used to obtain resonance. Due to the induced eddy currents, this r-f magnetic field is attenuated and its phase is shifted as it progresses toward the center of the sample. A quantity defined as the skin depth is a measure of this attenuation. As a result of the attenuation and phase shift of the r-f magnetic field, the resultant lineshape of a given mode of the resonance …

A Comparison Of Unisensory Versus Multisensory Presentation And The Effectiveness Of Audition In The Initial Learning Stage, Jane Doornwaard Den Herder Jan 1973

A Comparison Of Unisensory Versus Multisensory Presentation And The Effectiveness Of Audition In The Initial Learning Stage, Jane Doornwaard Den Herder

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of audition, in unisensory presentation and in bisensory or multisensory presentations, in the initial learning stage (short term memory). The study developed as a result of experience the investigator had with multimodal presentations of material. Upon viewing the rapid gains through that approach, questions were raised with regard to the validity of the position a unisensory auditory approach has always held for speech pathologists. The review of the literature confirmed the presence of theoretical conflicts with regard to man's processing and the superiority of modes for learning. Some of …

Notes On The Pupation Of The Sawfly, Trichiosoma Triangulum (Hymenoptera), Betty J. Burch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Trichiosoma triangulum pupae have previously been found only beneath the ground. However, a pupa of T. triangulum was collected from a sapling in Michigan in the Fall of 1971. This find may indicate a need to revise the life history as it is now understood.

Type Kinderhook Ammonoids, W. M. Furnish, Walter L. Manger Jan 1973

Type Kinderhook Ammonoids, W. M. Furnish, Walter L. Manger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lower Mississippian rocks in the type area of North America have produced only a few scattered ammonoid cephalopods. Those specimens from southeastern Iowa and northwestern Missouri lie within the general vicinity of the designated type locality, near Kinderhook, Illinois. In this area, age relationships for strata near the Devonian-Mississippian boundary have been established largely through studies of their conodont faunas. However, some of the ammonoids from within the Kinderhook and adjacent beds are critical for long-range correlation. Although most of these ammonoid occurrences have been recorded, minor changes in correlation can be suggested by reexamination of the specimens, together with …

Population Fluctuations Of Some Plant Parasitic Nematodes In The Kalsow Prairie, Iowa, D. P. Schmitt Jan 1973

Population Fluctuations Of Some Plant Parasitic Nematodes In The Kalsow Prairie, Iowa, D. P. Schmitt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Kalsow Prairie is a 160 acre native tract located in the Clarion-Nicollet-Webster soil association in Pocahontas County, Iowa. It is composed of clay-loam to silty-clay-loam soil that ranged from pH 5.5 to 6.7, except for a soil drift that was 7.6, among the 15 test sites. The organic matter content was 8.5 to 12.9%. Population density changes of selected plant parasitic nematodes were investigated at four bimonthly intervals beginning in February 1968. The dominant nematodes in potholes were Helicotylenchus hydrophilus, Xiphinema chambersi, Tetylenchus;octus, and an undescribed Tylenchorhynchus species. The common nematodes in the drier sites were Tylenchorhynchus maximus, T. …

Responses Of Species In Kalsow Prairie, Iowa, To An April Fire, Mary S. Richards, R. Q. Landers Jan 1973

Responses Of Species In Kalsow Prairie, Iowa, To An April Fire, Mary S. Richards, R. Q. Landers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Selected prairie species were observed during the first growing season following a prescribed burn on Kalsow Prairie, a mesic tall grass prairie in central Iowa. Changes in dry weight, vegetative cover, and flowering response were measured on burned, unburned and mowed areas. Significant changes were recorded for many species following the burn ranging from a flowering response of prairie dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis) on burned areas 30 times that on unburned areas to a slight reduction in flowering of bluegrass (Poa pratensis) on burned areas.

The Distribution And Variation Of The Western Earth Snake, Virginia Valeriae Elegans (Kennicott) In Iowa, James L. Christiansen Jan 1973

The Distribution And Variation Of The Western Earth Snake, Virginia Valeriae Elegans (Kennicott) In Iowa, James L. Christiansen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Western earth snakes, Virginia valeriae elegans, were known in Iowa from only three specimens and considered very rare until the present study. Intense effort to find them in the last two years produced specimens from only the lower Des Moines and Chariton River drainages. The snakes were found to be closely associated with timbered, rocky terrain near streams and to be potentially endangered where timber is permanently removed. Sampling showed two geographic areas in the Des Moines River drainage inhabited by this snake; specimens from the two areas were very similar morphologically. Iowa specimens usually lack the light vertebral stripe …

The Rock Creek Ossuary, Iowa (13pm65), Duane C. Anderson, David A. Baerreis Jan 1973

The Rock Creek Ossuary, Iowa (13pm65), Duane C. Anderson, David A. Baerreis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Physical and cultural remains salvaged from the Rock Creek Ossuary (13PM65) by the Northwest Iowa Archaeological Society are described in detail. The site is interpreted as the place of reburial of at least 27 individuals who died over an unspecified period of time. Afflictions including two projectile point injuries are discussed along with an interesting effigy pendant made of catlinite. Mill Creek and/or Great Oasis cultural affiliation is suggested on the basis of cordmarked pottery, numerous Anculosa shell beads and the close proximity of late prehistoric habitation sites.

Mississippian Stratigraphy Of North-Central Iowa, Donald L. Koch Jan 1973

Mississippian Stratigraphy Of North-Central Iowa, Donald L. Koch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Formational units of the Meramec Series are present only in the southwestern portion and along the southern edge of north-central Iowa, and are disconformably overlain by Pennsylvanian, Cretaceous or Pleistocene strata. Rock units of the Osage Series have approximately the same distribution as those of the Meramec Series, but because of facies changes and diagenetic alterations it often is difficult to identify individual formations. Rock units of the Kinderhook Series are present throughout most of the southern half of north-central Iowa. Alternating units of limestone and dolostone form the principal basis upon which formations and members have been identified. Areally, …

Industrial Arts Safety Program For Interstate 35 Junior High, Karlos G. Mcclure Jan 1973

Industrial Arts Safety Program For Interstate 35 Junior High, Karlos G. Mcclure

Graduate Student Work

Accident prevention is the concern of most citizens, but it is the special concern of the industrial arts teacher. School shops are potentially dangerous places, but when properly equipped, arranged, and managed, provide a relative accident free environment.

Occasionally accidents in the shop do happen. The shop teacher is interested in preventing accidents to the students and protecting himself and the school against liability.

The desire of parents to seek damages for an injured pupil may well be understood, but every effort must be done to prevent a situation such as this from happening. The industrial arts instructor must be …
