An Analysis Of The Relationship Between K-12 Public Education Spending And Student Academic Achievement In Iowa [Paper, Bolton Award Version], Lydia Berns-Schweingruber
Mary Ann Bolton Undergraduate Research Award
Student academic achievement in Iowa is on the decline (U.S. Department of Education 2022). Some politicians propose increasing public education spending in order to address worrisome trends in academic achievement (Richardson 2022). Prior studies disagree about we whether there is a relationship between school spending and student outcomes (Betts 1995; Card and Krueger 1996; Card and Payne 2002; Coleman et al. 1966; Downes and Figlio 1997; Greenwald et al. 1996; Hanushek 1986; Jackson et al. 2015; Lafortune et al. 2018; Martorell et al. 2016; Miller 2018; Rajpal 1969). We Would Be Friends: Fans, Musicians And Social Media, Cassidy Byrnes
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
With social media being one of the most prominent forms of communication today, it has become a pillar in the way our society functions. Social media has completely transformed the way we interact with people we know and with people we don’t. Celebrities have taken social media in stride and are using it as part of their brand to communicate with fans, which creates a very interesting dynamic. Musicians and their fans appear to communicate regularly through social media, so fans are doing more than consuming music, they are interacting with other fans and their favorite musicians. Fans, through social …

Discussion of “The Great Resignation” suggests that burnout may influence faculty members’ decisions to withdraw from their field (Daumiller et al., 2021; Klotz, 2021; Sheather, 2021). Still, much of the evidence for faculty burnout and turnover is anecdotal, and further investigation is necessary to determine the impact of burnout and other job demands on turnover intentions.
● In this study, we predicted that participants with higher levels of burnout would report higher levels of turnover intentions (i.e., reported likelihood of leaving their current position for another or retiring early).
● We also examined which job demands and demographics most influenced …
Rural Identity, Self-Reliance, Stoicism, And Attitudes Toward Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Iowans, Taylor Brown
Rural Identity, Self-Reliance, Stoicism, And Attitudes Toward Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Iowans, Taylor Brown
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
In the United States, 21% of adults have a mental illness. Prevalence of mental illness tends to be highest among young adults (18-25 years old) and lowest among older adults (50 years or older; National Institute of Mental Health, 2020).
Rural communities represent 19% of the United States population (Oser et al., 2022). Research has shown that rates of mental illness are the same in rural areas as in urban areas (Morales et al., 2020) and that suicide rates are significantly higher within rural communities (Brunk, 2010). Despite this, there is a significant lack of help-seeking among rural residents (Morales …

A Basic Model For The Association Of Ligands With Membrane Cholesterol: Application To Cytolysin Binding, Yvonne Lange, S. M. Ali Tabei, Theodore L. Steck
A Basic Model For The Association Of Ligands With Membrane Cholesterol: Application To Cytolysin Binding, Yvonne Lange, S. M. Ali Tabei, Theodore L. Steck
Faculty Publications
Almost all the cholesterol in cellular membranes is associated with phospholipids in simple stoichiometric complexes. This limits the binding of sterol ligands such as filipin and perfringolysin O (PFO) to a small fraction of the total. We offer a simple mathematical model that characterizes this complexity. It posits that the cholesterol accessible to ligands has two forms: active cholesterol, which is that not complexed with phospholipids; and extractable cholesterol, that which ligands can capture competitively from the phospholipid complexes. Simulations based on the model match published data for the association of PFO oligomers with liposomes, plasma membranes, and the isolated …

A Survey Of South Carolina Pharmacists' Readiness To Prescribe Human Immunodeficiency Virus Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, Charles M. Burns, Kyle Endres, Caroline Derrick, Alexandra Cooper, Patricia Fabel, Nwora Lance Okeke, Divya Ahuja, Amy Corneli, Mehri S. Mckellar

Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is largely underutilized in the Southern United States. Given their community presence, pharmacists are well positioned to provide PrEP within rural, Southern regions. However, pharmacists' readiness to prescribe PrEP in these communities remains unknown. Objective: To determine the perceived feasibility and acceptability of prescribing PrEP by pharmacists in South Carolina (SC). Methods: We distributed a 43-question online descriptive survey through the University of South Carolina Kennedy Pharmacy Innovation Center's listserv of licensed SC pharmacists. We assessed pharmacists' comfort, knowledge, and readiness to provide PrEP. Results: A total of 150 pharmacists responded to …

Secondary Traumatic Stress: Therapists' Past Trauma And Workplace Intervention [Poster], Morgan A. Wickman
Secondary Traumatic Stress: Therapists' Past Trauma And Workplace Intervention [Poster], Morgan A. Wickman
Research in the Capitol
- Secondary traumatic stress (STS): type of indirect trauma wherein listening to the traumatic experiences of another causes causes a stress reaction and can lead to PTSD-like symptoms (6, 18, 13).
- Secondary traumatic stress affects mental health professionals at high rates because they have higher rates of exposure to traumatic content (1, 2, 6, 20).
- The current study analyzes the impact of personal history of trauma on the therapist and how the workplace environment impacts STS to identify ways to reduce the severity and frequency of STS occurring in therapists.
Using Color With Care: An Exploration Of The Application Of Psychological Color Theory Within Language Classrooms, Mackenzie Wisneski
Using Color With Care: An Exploration Of The Application Of Psychological Color Theory Within Language Classrooms, Mackenzie Wisneski
Research in the Capitol
This study is a qualitative analysis of the instructional uses of color for social-emotional and academic assistance within language classrooms. Learners’ environment in relation to information acquisition and retention matters (Krashen, 1982; Maslow, 1970; Perry, 2006), and developing practices connecting color and emotion is beneficial for the psychological regulation of those within any environment (Güneş & Olguntürk, 2020). This is especially important for emergent bilingual students, as these learners are disproportionately exposed to additional academic, emotional, socio-economic, and cultural challenges (Benesch, 2012; Beyer, 2017; Heineke & Vera, 2021). Data comprise surveys and interviews of three K-12 public school teachers of …

Prior research has examined the effect of K-12 public education spending on student academic achievement; researchers disagree about whether increasing public education spending improves academic achievement. The purpose of this study is to determine if K-12 public education spending has an effect on student academic achievement in Iowa. This project will use a secondary analysis of data from the past twenty years to examine the relationship between K-12 public education spending in Iowa and student academic achievement in Iowa.
