Is A Genetic Diathesis For Poor Nutrition Becoming More Crucial Due To The Uniformity Of Covid Social Stress?, M. Catherine Desoto

Faculty Publications

The important role of nutrition in proper neural functioning and mental health has seen wider acceptance, but is still sadly under recognized given the existent body of research. This Special Issue was designed to unite authoritative information on this topic in one volume. This editorial provides an overview of the issue, and suggests that the combination of social isolation, lack of exercise, and remaining indoors that overtook industrialized societies during 2020 are specific factors expected to change the Gene × Environment interactions for anxiety and depression. Importantly, the recent environmental changes may make biological diatheses for nutritional deficiencies even more …

Emotions In Crisis: Consequences Of Ceremonial Refugee Camp Visits To Bhutanese Refugee Camps In Nepal, Kamryn Warren Jan 2023

Emotions In Crisis: Consequences Of Ceremonial Refugee Camp Visits To Bhutanese Refugee Camps In Nepal, Kamryn Warren

Faculty Publications

Research on refugee resettlement frequently overlooks the larger context of the experience of forced migration. As a result, the micro-level interactions between refugees and the bureaucrats who make resettlement decisions are obscured. We can better understand the socio-political dynamics between refugees and the officials deciding their resettlement cases if we approach encounters between refugees and migration officials during ceremonial visits as sites of emotional exchange. This article examines the complex socio-political emotional exchanges of power and vulnerability that underpin the refugee resettlement process through an ethnographic analysis of Bhutanese refugee camps in Nepal.

Using Emojis To Transform Messages: Manipulating Visual Rhetoric To Achieve Compliance, Deya Roy, Joy Daggs, John Katsion Jan 2023

Using Emojis To Transform Messages: Manipulating Visual Rhetoric To Achieve Compliance, Deya Roy, Joy Daggs, John Katsion

Iowa Journal of Communication

Emojis are commonplace in mediated communication and function as substitutes for non-verbal behavior, emotions, concepts, and ideas. Previous research indicates that emojis serve as a visual element that draws attention to a message (Willoughby & Lui, 2018) and they can impact emotional responses toward the sender and the message (Das et al., 2019; Gesselman et al, 2019; Luangrath et al., 2017). This study examines emojis as visual rhetorical devices and the effect these visual communication elements have on a receiver’s emotional response to a message. The findings indicate that visual artifacts (emojis like cake, pizza, a clock, etc.) serve a …

The Effect Of Walking Outdoors On Stress, Riley N. Rodemaker Jan 2023

The Effect Of Walking Outdoors On Stress, Riley N. Rodemaker

Graduate Research Papers

Stress is a common part of life for everybody, including graduate students. Graduate school is a time of balancing numerous life roles (e.g., student, worker, friend, family), and all those roles are being balanced in a competitive academic environment (Fried et al., 2022). In fact, graduate students report that school-related stress has a negative impact on their overall well-being and that finding a balance between their life roles and responsibilities is important (Fried et al., 2022). Furthermore, graduate students recognize the importance of coping skills and yet often feel there are barriers to improving upon their skills (Fried et al., …

Returning To Space And Revisiting The Challenger And Columbia Addresses, Jay M. Hudkins Jan 2023

Returning To Space And Revisiting The Challenger And Columbia Addresses, Jay M. Hudkins

Iowa Journal of Communication

This article argues that Bush’s Columbia address lacked the necessary rhetorical touchstones established by Reagan’s Challenger address, the exemplar for presidential eulogistic rhetoric following a tragedy in space flight. First, a central theme found in presidential rhetoric concerning space exploration, that of characterizing astronauts as pioneers and space as the new frontier, will be traced. Next, Reagan’s eulogy to the Challenger crew, noting the speech’s points of rhetorical excellence, several of which previous scholars have articulated (Goldzwig & Dionisopoulos, 1986; Jamieson, 1988; Mister, 1986), will be outlined. The goal is to establish rhetorical touchstones by which to judge the Bush …

Photojournalism, Public Health, And Politicization: Analyzing Photographic News Coverage Of Health Crises In The 20th And 21st Centuries, Hans C. Schmidt Jan 2023

Photojournalism, Public Health, And Politicization: Analyzing Photographic News Coverage Of Health Crises In The 20th And 21st Centuries, Hans C. Schmidt

Iowa Journal of Communication

While political division has been present in the American press since its start, politicized and polarized content is now stretching beyond straightforward political news – where such content might be expected – and is increasingly seen in other news categories, including science, medical, and health journalism. This development has been especially notable during the COVID-19 pandemic, when medical and health reporting frequently became coopted by a political narrative. This study builds on research into the politicization of pandemic and medical reporting with an investigation of pandemic-era photojournalism. Using a content analysis, this study aims to provide greater insight into the …

Assessing Policy Implementation In The Iowa Department Of Veterans Affairs: A Case-By-Case County Analysis, Dylan Boles

Graduate Research Papers

“Assessing Policy Implementation In The Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs: A CaseBy-Case County Analysis” is a research paper dedicated to determining relative efficiency of all 99 counties in Iowa in their mission to serve Veterans in the state through assessing multiple independent variables of County Veteran Service Officers (CVSOs) and their offices, and their respective impact on the dependent variable, their claims density percentages. Claims density percentages are determined by taking each individual county’s reported claims filed, per the “Running Awards by Beneficiaries by County” report produced by the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA), and dividing that by the …

Exploring The Microbial Composition Of Moonmilk In Wind Cave National Park, Emma Pellegrino Jan 2023

Exploring The Microbial Composition Of Moonmilk In Wind Cave National Park, Emma Pellegrino

Honors Program Theses

Moonmilk is a white substance mainly composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) that is often found in limestone caves. It is one of many mineral composites, or speleothems, in Wind Cave National Park South Dakota and is thought to be formed by microbial activity. This cave system is a complex, isolated environment that serves as an analog for similar domains beyond the Earth. Each site has varying degrees of human exposure, from public tour routes to caverns only occasionally visited by park rangers, making it an ideal place of study for pristine samples in extreme conditions. Wind Cave also varies in …

In the following pages, dear reader, you will be astounded, mystified, entertained, and intrigued. Using Stephen King’s three monstrous archetypes outlined in Danse Macabre as a guide, and the 1930’s Universal Monster Films as a starting point, I trace the roots of the Vampire, Two Faced, and Thing Without a Name through time and space. Along the evolutionary track of these archetypes, I touch on changes regarding perception and performance, in relation to social and historical shifts. I will be your guide exploring the scenery, costuming, sound design, and cinematography (to name a few) as I examine each film within …

Diffusion Of Carbon Nanoparticles Intercalated Into Layered Materials, Madelyn Johnson Jan 2023

Diffusion Of Carbon Nanoparticles Intercalated Into Layered Materials, Madelyn Johnson

Honors Program Theses

Using electron beam radiation, as found in a scanning electron microscope, it is possible to induce the local intercalation of carbon nanoparticles into two dimensional layered materials. This technique can be used to form insulating and optically active nanostructures in samples ranging from graphite to BSSCO. In this study, the evolution of these features with time is explored to determine the stability of such nanoparticles in layered materials.

Over the course of days and weeks, the nanostructures created this way broaden and change height. In general, it appears that material buried deep within the layers diffuses upwards to increase the …

Family Communication Patterns And Educational Orientations, Nathan Miczo, Lisa A. Miczo

Iowa Journal of Communication

This research investigates the impact of family communication patterns on educational orientations. Two hundred and nine students completed an online survey assessing family communication patterns (conversation and conformity orientation) and educational orientations (learning orientation and grade orientation). Regression analyses revealed that both conversation and conformity orientation were positive predictors of learning orientation, while only conformity orientation was a positive predictor of grade orientation. The discussion highlights the need for continued research into the role of the family as an influence on college student motivations.

The majority of food in the US is distributed through global/national supply chains that exclude locally-produced goods. This situation offers opportunities to increase local food production and consumption and is influenced by constraints that limit the scale of these activities. We conducted a study to assess perspectives of producers and consumers engaged in food systems of a major Midwestern city. We examined producers’ willingness to include/increase cultivation of local foods and consumers’ interest in purchasing/increasing local foods. We used focus groups of producers (two groups of conventional farmers, four local food producers) and consumers (three conventional market participants, two locavores) …
