The Use Of Posters In Club Work Feb 1932

The Use Of Posters In Club Work

Science Bulletin

Posters furnish excellent illustrative material for club programs and will add much interest to the work. There are usually members of the club who have artistic ability and can make use of their ability in this way, but it is not necessary to be an artist in order to make good posters or cartoons, as excellent results can be obtained by cutting advertisements from magazines and arranging them and pasting them on cardboard so as to illustrate various subjects. The value of the poster does not depend upon its artistic side but in the clever representation and emphasis of some …

Some Conics With Names, Roscoe Woods

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Scattered through the field of elementary mathematics there are a number of conics which have received names. It is the purpose of this paper to group them together for reference. In the list that follows, the most common method of defining the curve is given and the given references are not necessarily the earliest reference. Articles have been selected as far as possible because they give a good discussion of the curve.

A Sampling Test Of The Technique Of Analyzing Variance In A 2xn Table With Disproportionate Frequencies, Bernice Brown Jan 1932

A Sampling Test Of The Technique Of Analyzing Variance In A 2xn Table With Disproportionate Frequencies, Bernice Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The data used in this study are taken from the 1928 and 1929 records of the meat fed Wistar rats in the Animal Research Laboratory of the Foods and Nutrition Department at Iowa State College. The records of 149 animals were available, unequally divided as to sex, and including four generations. The weight of the animals at 28 days of age was recorded with the weight each week thereafter for six successive weeks.

Further Observations On The Golden Digger, Roy L. Abbott Sep 1931

Further Observations On The Golden Digger, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

In two previous numbers of this journal, I have already given some of the results of my studies on the habits, instincts, and intelligence of the Golden Digger wasp. During the past summer I have again studied this wasp, but will give here only a few observations, reserving the rest for a more extended paper.

Aspergillus Niger As An Indicator Of Available Phosphorus In The Soil, F. E. Schlots, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There have been numerous attempts in recent years to develop a method which would indicate accurately the phosphorus needs of the soil. Biological methods and chemical methods have been suggested, but at some time or other all the methods have failed to give satisfactory results.

Heliantheae Of Iowa Ii, M. Rae Johns Jan 1930

Heliantheae Of Iowa Ii, M. Rae Johns

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The first paper on Heliantheae of Iowa included the genera Galinsoga, Eclipta, Actinomeris, Parthenium, Polymnia, Ambrosia, Iva, and Xanthium. This list was made up of the introduced, the doubtful, and some of the obnoxious weed species of the Tribe Heliantheae. The review covered the history and the distribution of the species in the United States and in Iowa. In the descriptions of the species, emphasis was laid on the minute details of the floral structures in the effort to bring out the distinctive and possibly hitherto unnoted features that mark the species.

Springtails As Economic Insects, Harlow B. Mills Jan 1930

Springtails As Economic Insects, Harlow B. Mills

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Springtails, or Collembola, are minute soft bodied insects which, although the number of species is small, sometimes attract attention by the numbers in which, under favorable conditions, they appear. They have been somewhat overlooked by workers in the different phases of biology; no doubt a natural consequence of their small size (1-4 mm.), and inconspicuous, retiring habits. They generally live in organic debris, or wherever there is sufficient moisture to support their existence. But for a part of one family, in which there is a poorly developed tracheal system, the respiration in this order is cutaneous and the skin must …

A Statistical Test Of Experimental Technique, George W. Snedecor Jan 1930

A Statistical Test Of Experimental Technique, George W. Snedecor

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The phrase "experimental technique" is used in a largely inclusive sense in this paper. A more precise title would be "A Statistical Test of Homogeneity." The reason for the more flexible phrase will be apparent, I trust, as the argument progresses.

A Sound Wave Analysis Of Tlingit Speech, Ray E. Miller Jan 1930

A Sound Wave Analysis Of Tlingit Speech, Ray E. Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The sound waves from a phonograph record of a Tlingit Indian's speech were photographed on the Metfessel strobo-photograph. The curves on the strobo-photograph film were traced onto a reduced musical-scale chart by means of an especially designed transcribing machine. The analysis, which was limited to the frequency of vibration and duration of the sounds, was made under two main headings: (1) intervals, and (2) intonations.

Bird Records Of Two Winters, 1920-1922, In The Upper Missouri Valley, T. C. Stephens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The writer has published three papers in the Proceedings of this Academy dealing with the winter bird life in the Missouri River region during the years from 1916 to 1920. More recently Mr. Chas. J. Spiker has published a paper on the same subject dealing with the years from 1922 to 1926. The present paper is intended to bridge the gap between these two periods and to place in permanent form a few very interesting and important records of the bird life in the region dealt with.

Molecular Forces, L. Begeman Apr 1929

Molecular Forces, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

One of the characteristic properties of molecules assembled in masses is their attraction for one another. While it is customary to classify these attractions under two heads, cohesion and adhesion, it is well understood that there is in reality only one form of attraction.
