Hampton Tusk Of Mastodon, Emmett J. Cable

Mastodon Tusk Background Material

On September 23, last, there was unearthed a large tusk in a gravel pit on the farm of W. S. Heuermann, section 21, Reeve township, Franklin County, about four miles south of the town of Hampton, Iowa. While loading gravel, one of the workmen noticed something sticking out of the gravels that resembled a horn. Upon closer examination it was found to be a giant tusk, the largest of its kind, according to the best information available, ever found. The tusk was complete before it was broken by the workmen. The length was 11 feet, 7½ inches, while the circumference, …

An Iowa Journal Of Mathematics, Gertrude A. Herr Jan 1933

An Iowa Journal Of Mathematics, Gertrude A. Herr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The aim of this paper is to call the attention of Iowa scientists to the fact that in the development of mathematical periodicals Iowa has played a significant part. From January, 1874 to November, 1883 The Analyst, a Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics was published in Des Moines by Joel E. Hendricks, a self-taught mathematician. This journal, started thirteen years after the last issue of the Mathematical Monthly of Boston (1859-1861), had the distinction of surviving longer than any previously published journal of its kind in the United States.

Notes On The Sporulation Time, Prepatent Period, Patent Period, And Size Of Oocycts In Infections With Isospora Lacazei Labbe, Phoebe R. Hall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The present study was undertaken in order to check the report of Boughton (1930) that the oöcysts of Isaspora lacazci decrease in size progressively during the course of an infection. Incidentally, some information relative to the prepatent period and patent period in this infection was obtained.

Some High Lights On Science Club Work

Science Bulletin

"The success of the club is of course more dependent upon the director than upon any other one factor. The director should take no active part during the meeting, except when it is necessary to carry the boys over what is to them an insurmountable difficulty-his frame of mind should be that of a man behind the scenes, who having set the stage stands by watching the performance, ever-ready to step into a situation and set things right. The ability to do this properly comes with practice. It does not demand exceptional ability or personality - Next to efficient leadership, …

The Project In Chemistry, Donald D. Pettit Mar 1932

The Project In Chemistry, Donald D. Pettit

Science Bulletin

Some time ago the writer became convinced that the typical presentation of high school chemistry left many things to be desired, especially with that group who are completing their scholastic work with their high school diploma. As a rule they are leaving school pretty thoroughly disgusted with class work in general, and, although they had originally intended to continue in school as evidenced by their election of chemistry, they find that the prospect offers no allure. In many cases I am afraid that the course in chemistry helped to turn them from further scholastic endeavor. In order to furnish some …

Suggestions For Biology Or Nature Clubs, Ross W. Harris Feb 1932

Suggestions For Biology Or Nature Clubs, Ross W. Harris

Science Bulletin

The very first requirement for a successful club of this nature is enthusiasm for and an interest in the. world of living things. The sparks for kindling enthusiasm must come from off the hearth of the sponsor. While the students must be guided they should be led to feel that it is their program that they are working out and not that of a teacher who grants credit for participation.

A Successful Club Project In Biology Feb 1932

A Successful Club Project In Biology

Science Bulletin

A few years ago when the author was teaching biology in a suburban high school of Chicago, the tussock moth became a menace to the shade trees in that vicinity. The biology students took up the problem of the tussock moth and how to eradicate it. The life history and habits of the moth were studied. Collections were made to show the life history. The Commercial Club became interested and a talk on the moth was given by a club member at one of their meetings.
