A Spectorophotometric And Spectroscopic Study Of Phi Persei, Herbert F. Schiefer Jan 1929

A Spectorophotometric And Spectroscopic Study Of Phi Persei, Herbert F. Schiefer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The great importance of intensity studies in stellar spectra has long been recognized and as such has been the subject of many investigations. Most of the early studies have been on the intensity distribution of the continuous spectrum. The more recent investigations have been confined to special regions of the continuous spectrum as well as on selected spectral lines. Various methods have been used for such intensity studies.

The Address Of The President - Contributions To The Pleistocene Geology Of Iowa, George F. Kay Jan 1929

The Address Of The President - Contributions To The Pleistocene Geology Of Iowa, George F. Kay

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although for many years much has been spoken and written about the glacial deposits of Pleistocene age in Iowa, in connection with the meetings of this Academy and many other scientific organizations, there is as much interest in these deposits today as at any previous time. Your retiring President has chosen therefore as the subject of this address, "Contributions to the Pleistocene Geology of Iowa." It is my purpose to recall to your minds some of the geologists who have made contributions to the Pleistocene geology of Iowa, and insofar as the time at our disposal will permit to point …

This disease is reported as being quite common in European countries. The writer has had the opportunity to make bacteriological examination in two of the above mentioned cases and one case in the pig.

A Spectrophotometric Method Of Studying Hemoglobin And Other Colored Substances In Solution, George E. Davis Jan 1927

A Spectrophotometric Method Of Studying Hemoglobin And Other Colored Substances In Solution, George E. Davis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An investigation was carried out to determine the possibilities of applying spectrophotometric methods to the problem of estimating the concentration of hemoglobin in blood. The concentration of a substance in solution can easily be determined from its transmission of some particular wave length, providing the absorption ratio for that wave length is known. A late model direct reading spectrophotometer was used. The method was found to be fairly accurate and simple and should prove valuable in other physical investigations involving the study of spectral transmission curves of various colored substances. Some interesting irregularities in the shape of the spectral transmission …

The Use Of Sodium Taurocholate And Crystal Violet In The Isolation Of Bact. Tumefaciens Sm. & Town., M. K. Patel Jan 1927

The Use Of Sodium Taurocholate And Crystal Violet In The Isolation Of Bact. Tumefaciens Sm. & Town., M. K. Patel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the isolation of Bacterium tumefaciens from overgrowths on apple, one of the greatest sources of contamination is that of soil organisms. These are lodged in the soil within the crevices of the convoluted gall surface. In addition the crown gall organisms frequently occur in only small numbers, making it necessary to use large amounts of tissue for isolation purposes.

Molecular Space Array In X-Ray Diffractioin Halos In A Liquid: The Case Of Liquid Normal Primary Alcohols: The Cybotatic State, G. W. Stewart, Roger M. Morrow Jan 1927

Molecular Space Array In X-Ray Diffractioin Halos In A Liquid: The Case Of Liquid Normal Primary Alcohols: The Cybotatic State, G. W. Stewart, Roger M. Morrow

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For more than a decade (Debye and Scherrer, Nachr. Gesell. Göttingen (1916), p. 6) the X-ray circular diffraction halo in liquids has been known. Doubtless numerous times the suggestion has been made (vide Hewlett, Phys. Rev. 20 (1922), p. 688, and others) that there is in the liquid a spacial arrangement of molecules, probably as fragmentary crystals. But definite evidence of such a structure has been lacking.

The Physiographic Ecology Of A Wisconsin Drift Lake, Lois A. Catlin, Ada Hayden Jan 1927

The Physiographic Ecology Of A Wisconsin Drift Lake, Lois A. Catlin, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In Iowa, practically all of the swamp land and many of the smaller lakes with which the early pioneers were familiar have been drained and there agricultural crops are grown. Whether the greatest economic benefit may be derived from appropriating for agricultural purposes such a small proportion of the land as lake beds represent, or by conserving and developing their natural resources is a subject for consideration. With one exception (that of Wall Lake in Wright County), Little Wall Lake is the only lake of any size within an area with radius of at least fifty miles, and in view …

Manganese In Iowa City Waters, Edward Bartow, W. T. Bailey Jan 1927

Manganese In Iowa City Waters, Edward Bartow, W. T. Bailey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

More than thirty years ago Proskauer reported the presence of manganese in many ground waters. For a long time afterward little attention was paid to the subject because it had not been proved that manganese imparted any bad qualities to water. But in 1906, the sudden appearance of iron and manganese in the Breslau water supply (1) in such quantities as to cause it to be abandoned, forced the recognition of the fact that iron and manganese produce like qualities in water. The first water in this country in which manganese occurred in sufficient quantity to cause trouble was from …

The Dark Ring Nebula In Cygnus, D. W. Morehouse

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since my report on the Dark Ring Nebula in Cygnus,1 I have received the following communication from Dr. R. H. Curtiss, Acting Director of the Detroit Observatory of the University of Michigan: "Your article in the February Popular Astronomy on a dark ring nebula in Cygnus has led me to look up an excellent slide which we have of that region made from a photograph secured with the 6-inch Willard Lens on October 5, 1893, at Lick Observatory. The dark elliptical ring stands out very beautifully on this slide. I think anyone would notice it but would be strongly …

Removal Of A Common Source Of Trouble In Hydrogen Ion Measurements, Stephen Popoff, A. H. Kunz Jan 1926

Removal Of A Common Source Of Trouble In Hydrogen Ion Measurements, Stephen Popoff, A. H. Kunz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The best conditions for plating platinum black deposits are given. If these conditions are followed, it is rather difficult to "poison" the hydrogen electrodes in the ordinary neutralization reactions. Poisoned electrodes can be restored to give normal values if treated with concentrated nitric acid.

Some Investigation Of The Ethanol Carbontetrachloride System, S. Fred Calhoun, Thos. C. Poulter Jan 1926

Some Investigation Of The Ethanol Carbontetrachloride System, S. Fred Calhoun, Thos. C. Poulter

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Ethanol Carbontetrachloride system has been investigated with respect to the total vapor pressure, and the partial vapor pressures of the constituents at twenty-five and sixty degrees. The total pressures of different mixtures of Ethanol Carbontetrachloride were determined at twenty-five degrees by means of a bulb to which was sealed a manometer. The total pressure at sixty degrees was measured by means of an apparatus designed by the authors for the rapid and accurate determination of the vapor pressures of liquids that do not readily react with mercury. A description of this apparatus will appear in the Journal of Industrial …
