Parasitology In The High School Curriculum, Elery R. Becker Jan 1939

Parasitology In The High School Curriculum, Elery R. Becker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In his retiring address to the American Society of Parasitologists, Dr. F. C. Bishop (1938) made the following plea: "I believe there is need for a textbook on parasitology suitable for grade and high school students, and that this society might well take the initiative in getting included in the curriculum of every high school in this country an elementary course in a subject which touches, often in a vital way, the life of every individual." Shall the schoolmen oi Iowa take his plea seriously? Residents of the temperate zone are inclined to refer matters of parasitological interest to mankind …

An Experiment In The Teaching Of Industrial Physics, M. E. Graber Jan 1938

An Experiment In The Teaching Of Industrial Physics, M. E. Graber

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

While we as teachers of engineering physics comparing ourselves with ourselves and grading objective tests of many types and stripes are inclined to think that our teaching and student product are satisfactory, there may be criteria which our instruction is not meeting. Impressed with this possibility I have made an analysis of my findings obtained from interviews with my own students, deans of engineering schools and engineers in the practice of their profession. The results of these studies are definite and specific.

Wet Thermojunctions For Measuring Relative Humidity, L. A. Richards Jan 1938

Wet Thermojunctions For Measuring Relative Humidity, L. A. Richards

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Using wet and dry thermojunctions instead of wet and dry thermometers for measuring relative humidity is a rather obvious variation in experimental procedure. A. V. Hill (4) used thermopiles of fifty junctions for this kind of measurement but his sensitive elements were slow in response because of large thermal capacity and large thermal conduction between junctions. Lanning (2) and later Woodrow (3) successfully used single copper-constantan thermocouples for measuring relative humidity in restricted space. Bal des (1) and McCracken (7) have used thermocouples for measuring osmotic pressure by wetting one junction with the solution to be tested and placing the …

The First Record Of The Black Widow Spider (Lactrodectus Mactans Texanus) For Iowa, Karl A. Stiles Jan 1937

The First Record Of The Black Widow Spider (Lactrodectus Mactans Texanus) For Iowa, Karl A. Stiles

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There is great interest at the present time in the most poisonous of spiders, the black widow. This interest has been stimulated by the belief on the part of some biologists that its geographical range, which heretofore has been considered southern is being greatly extended. Scientific journals have been reporting the appearance of the black widow in states where it has not previously been found until on January 22, in Science, the statement was made that Minnesota and Iowa were the only states in which it had not been found. The writer believes that Iowa may be added to the …

Grasshoppers In Iowa In 1936, Carl J. Drake, George C. Decker Jan 1937

Grasshoppers In Iowa In 1936, Carl J. Drake, George C. Decker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Iowa and other mid-western states suffered tremendous grasshopper losses in 1936. Although the heaviest damage occurred in the western and southern counties, the infestation extended across the southern half of the state and up along the Mississippi River into a number of northeastern counties. In fact, more or less damage occurred in all save about 25 counties located in the northcentral part of the state. Over 21,000 farmers broadcast 200 or more pounds of poison bait on their respective farms, and a total of 4,463 tons of dry bait materials were wet and mixed at 52 county mixing stations.

Effect Of Auditory And Visual Stimuli On Brain Potential Rhythms, Betty M. Martinson Jan 1937

Effect Of Auditory And Visual Stimuli On Brain Potential Rhythms, Betty M. Martinson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study attempts to compare the blocking of the Berger rhythm caused by visual and auditory sensations. Four stimuli were used - a bright light of one hundred (100) watts, a dim light of twenty-five (25) watts, a thousand cycle tone at approximately seventy (70) decibels, and a similar tone at approximately forty (40) decibels. A series of two hundred stimuli composed of fifty of each of these arranged in random order was presented to the subject. The records were read for latency and perseveration of the blocking and the four types of stimulus were compared.

The Effect Of Training In Phonics Upon Reading Ability At The College Level, Maurine Rogers Jan 1937

The Effect Of Training In Phonics Upon Reading Ability At The College Level, Maurine Rogers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this experiment was to ascertain the effect of phonic ability upon reading ability at the college level. The subjects were 72 poor readers from the lowest 20 per cent of reading scores of University of Iowa freshmen. Half of these readers formed an experimental group and a like half a control group. Vocabulary tests and pronunciation tests composed of the same words were given. These were accompanied by paragraph comprehension and oral reading tests. The experimental group then took a period of individual phonic training at the end of which both experimental and control groups were retested. …

Quantitative Measurement Of Some Psychological And Phonetic Factors Affecting The Incidence Of Stuttering, Spencer F. Brown Jan 1937

Quantitative Measurement Of Some Psychological And Phonetic Factors Affecting The Incidence Of Stuttering, Spencer F. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study reported in the Quarterly Journal of Speech (November, 1935) showed the existence of a phonetic factor of difficulty affecting the occurrence of stuttering spasms. Further analysis of the data on which the previous work was based has revealed a grammatical factor of difficulty. This is more consistent, but does not seem to be as important as the phonetic factor.

The Effect Of Carbon Dioxide On Nitrate Accumulation In Carrington Loam, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown, H. C. Millar Jan 1936

The Effect Of Carbon Dioxide On Nitrate Accumulation In Carrington Loam, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown, H. C. Millar

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Most microorganisms obtain carbon as well as energy from the oxidation of organic compounds but the nitrifying bacteria assimilate carbon dioxide from the air as a source of carbon. The sulfur bacteria and the hydrogen oxidizing bacteria also assimilate carbon dioxide from the air. Other bacteria that cannot assimilate carbon dioxide from the air are greatly stimulated by its presence. Increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air about cultures of Lactobacillus acidophilus produces higher plate counts and larger colonies than cultures in carbon dioxide-free air. An increased concentration of carbon dioxide in the soil air stimulates the growth …

The Rossi-Cholodny Technic As An Aid In The Study Of The Decomposition Of Lignin, H. H. Mollenhoff, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown Jan 1936

The Rossi-Cholodny Technic As An Aid In The Study Of The Decomposition Of Lignin, H. H. Mollenhoff, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study of the soil microflora by direct microscopic examination offers the possibility of observing the activities of the microorganisms in their natural surroundings and the attention of soil microbiologists has been directed along this line from time to time. Rossi (4) and Cholodny (1) working independently proposed similar methods which yield results of a qualitative nature and their methods have come to be known as the Rossi-Cholodny technic. Recently, Conn (2 and 3), Winogradsky (6), and Ziemiecka (7) have contributed to the further development of the method, adapting it to laboratory conditions.

A Method For Determining The Exchange Capacity Of Organic Matter In The Presence Of Nitrogen And Calcium, H. C. Millar, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown Jan 1936

A Method For Determining The Exchange Capacity Of Organic Matter In The Presence Of Nitrogen And Calcium, H. C. Millar, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many methods have been used for determining the base exchange capacity of soils and certain advantages have been claimed by each investigator for his particular method. Fewer studies on the base exchange reactions of organic matter have been made and the nature of the material makes many of the methods used for soils impracticable and inaccurate when applied to organic matter. According to McGeorge (1) the monovalent lignin salts are soluble in alcohol and the use of alcohol in base exchange studies on organic matter is of questionable value. The removal of excess soluble salt from the base exchange …

A Fusarium Following Frost-Injury Of Robinia, J. C. Gilman, B. B. Sproat Jan 1936

A Fusarium Following Frost-Injury Of Robinia, J. C. Gilman, B. B. Sproat

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the fall of 1935 a number of specimens of seedlings of Robinia pseudo-acacia L. were submitted to the Department of Botany of Iowa State College for the investigation of a canker which was girdling the sterns of these plants at or about the ground line. On a majority of the specimens examined, the injury consisted of a sunken area approximately two centimeters in length completely surrounding the stem. The wood under these cankers was materially browned and the cambium was dead. Many of these cankers were covered with orange sporodochia of a fungus which microscopic examination proved to be …

An Opportunistic Laboratory, John A. Eldridge Jan 1936

An Opportunistic Laboratory, John A. Eldridge

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A laboratory has a joint function (a) to create happy attitudes and (b) to teach subject matter practically and realistically. It has sometimes been questioned whether the laboratory does act effectively either as inspiration or as a teaching device. The paper describes experiences in a laboratory where the experiments were exactly correlated with the class work, where laboratory manual was dispensed with, where the experiments were usually unconventional.

Preliminary Investigation Of The Occurrence And Distribution Of Azotobacter On The Soils In Iowa, William P. Martin, R. H. Walker Jan 1935

Preliminary Investigation Of The Occurrence And Distribution Of Azotobacter On The Soils In Iowa, William P. Martin, R. H. Walker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Berthelot in 1888 was the first to suggest that nitrogen may be added to field soils through the activity of microorganisms. In 1901 Beijerinck isolated a non-symbiotic, aerobic, nitrogen-fixing organism which he called Azotobacter chroococcum. Since this time five other species belonging to this genus have been isolated and likewise have been found capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen.

A Preliminary List Of The Neuroptera Of Iowa, H. E. Jaques Jan 1935

A Preliminary List Of The Neuroptera Of Iowa, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Neuroptera or nerve-winged insects represent one of the smaller orders of the great group of six legged animals. No persistent work has been done on this group, for Iowa. The species herein listed have been gotten through general collecting. The list may doubtless be more than doubled by giving special attention to the order. The list is published as a challenge to Iowa nature lovers to find the other species that are doubtless more or less common within our state.

This plan, in effect since September, 1933, marks the latest development of a comprehensive experimental program which has had continuous growth during the past ten years.

A Bibliography On The Use Of Photoelectric Cells In Plant Investigations, F. M. Turrell, Louis Waldbauer Jan 1935

A Bibliography On The Use Of Photoelectric Cells In Plant Investigations, F. M. Turrell, Louis Waldbauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The recent appearance of the "sperrschicht" type of photoelectric cell has made possible the improvement of several old instruments and the development of new ones. These have included colorimeters, nephelometers, titration meters, pH meters, counters, illuminometers, spectrophotometers, reflection meters and area meters. Much of the work has been published since 1931 and is distributed widely in journals in the special fields of botany, chemistry, physics, engineering, medicine, etc. The authors have compiled the following bibliography with the hope of bringing together these recent developments in a form usable to plant physiologists and others interested in colorimetric, turbidimetric and various light …

The Effect Of Sodium Nitrate And Water Applications To Apple Trees Suffering From Drouth On Some Chemical Constituents Of The Fruit, H. H. Plagge Jan 1935

The Effect Of Sodium Nitrate And Water Applications To Apple Trees Suffering From Drouth On Some Chemical Constituents Of The Fruit, H. H. Plagge

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Storage tests on apples indicated that orchard applications of nitrate of soda had an unfavorable influence on storage capacity. As this effect appeared to be greatly restrained by drouth in 1930, experiments were carried on in 1931 to determine specifically the effect of differential treatments of nitrate of soda and water to trees suffering from dry weather.
