Finding For A Psychology Of Religion, Earle E. Emme, Lowell De Garmo Jan 1942

Finding For A Psychology Of Religion, Earle E. Emme, Lowell De Garmo

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A recent analysis of the nine most recent textbooks on the Psychology of Religion revealed a dearth of the commonly accepted findings in the field of psychology. Early authors omit topics of personality, mental health, personal religion, and religious expression. Childhood and adolescence were discussed in a minor way. Much emphasis was given to mysticism, immortality, primitive religions, prayer and other topics of considerable interest to theologians. The needs and interests of children, adolescents, and adults are readily recognized as basic to any adapted psychology of religion. Likewise, ideals, character values, methods of influencing youth, etc., should be rated as …

The Use Of The Standard Partial Regression Coefficient In Constructing General Botany Achievement Tests, W. H. Bragonier Jan 1942

The Use Of The Standard Partial Regression Coefficient In Constructing General Botany Achievement Tests, W. H. Bragonier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since 1926, various aspects of the general botany teaching program at Iowa State College have been studied. Victor (1933) and Dietz (1935) described studies dealing with teaching procedures and techniques and evaluation practices. Kreutzer (1935) and Dietz and Gould (1939) reported on certain phases of the testing program, particularly the practice of grouping students enrolled in Botany 101 according to scores made on pretests. Bragonier (1941) described the methods used in constructing and evaluating the pretests. The value of grouping the students for instructional purposes is generally acknowledged within the botany department, however, the means by which the students are …

Diseases Of Cereals And Flax In Iowa, I. E. Melhus, D. R. Shepherd, Marie A. Corkle

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Information relating to the prevalence and destructiveness of diseases of plants has been recorded in various journals and papers ever since the beginning of agriculture in Iowa. Most of these records are specific and valuable; some, however, especially for the early years, are so general as to have little value. In this paper an attempt has been made to summarize available records of the prevalence and destructiveness of the diseases of cereals and flax in Iowa and to interpret the early general reports on the basis of our present knowledge of plant pathology.

Durability Test On Iowa Limestones And Dolomites, Lyman W. Wood

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this paper is to summarize recent durability investigations of Iowa limestones and dolomites by the Iowa State Highway Commission, and to relate these investigations to the more general subject of the durability of Portland cement concrete. A subject as broad as the title indicates can be presented only very briefly at this time. The evidence discussed is for the most part from the Highway Commission records, supplemented by information from other sources including the Iowa Geological Survey publications and files. Acknowledgement is made to Bert Myers, Engineer of Materials and Tests, and to other employees of the …

The Earliest Known Epiphytotic Of Rust In Iowa, Maria A. Corkle, I. E. Melhus Jan 1941

The Earliest Known Epiphytotic Of Rust In Iowa, Maria A. Corkle, I. E. Melhus

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is the purpose of this paper to call attention to a rust epiphytotic in l 858, which apparently has been overlooked in the study of plant disease prevalence in Iowa. Early Iowa agricultural records and newspapers contain numerous reports of the calamitous wheat and oat failures caused by rust in 1858, yet this rust year has not been reported in any scientific publication from Iowa. Miss Hamilton2, who summarized material regarding a rust epiphytotic that occurred in 1878 in southern Minnesota, northern Iowa and Wisconsin, likewise makes no mention of the epiphytotic of 1858.

Ocular Patterns As Indices Of Intellectual Acheivement, Herman F. Brandt Jan 1941

Ocular Patterns As Indices Of Intellectual Acheivement, Herman F. Brandt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study is to evaluate, by means of ocular photography, the indices of the learning process. Since the mind is known by behavior of some kind, it would seem logical to assume a study of the characteristic behavior of the human eye would reveal some of the mental processes involved. If attention, retention, reason and reproduction are different phases of the learning process, it is likely that the analysis of ocular patterns would provide a valuable technique to evaluate such mental content. This study is an attempt to evaluate: 1. The relative time spent on respective symbols …

Simultaneity And Originality In Human Thought - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, Geo. Glockler Jan 1941

Simultaneity And Originality In Human Thought - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, Geo. Glockler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

All of us have observed in our scientific work that many discoveries have been made by different investigators at widely scattered places, but at the same time. Some of these instances are so striking that it becomes of interest to consider the matter and make an attempt to explain the condition in the hope that we may understand the phenomenon. The particular cases chosen for illustration are all from the fields of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Furthermore, they are scattered examples which have happened to come to our attention over a number of years. The same observation can undoubtedly be …

Diseases Of Potatoes In Iowa, I. E. Melhus, D. R. Shepherd, Marie A. Corkle Jan 1941

Diseases Of Potatoes In Iowa, I. E. Melhus, D. R. Shepherd, Marie A. Corkle

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is a well-known fact that potato production in Iowa has decreased since 1895. This raises the question as to the cause of this decline. Many factors contributed to the decrease in potato production, one of which was the destructiveness of various diseases. Many diseases tend to initiate sharp fluctuations in yield and quality, two factors that have much to do with the stability of a given crop. Previous to 1895 there were no well-developed control measures for any of the potato diseases: in fact the causal agencies of many of them were quite unknown. Consequently, as different pathogens became …

The Prolific General Jack Rose, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney Jan 1941

The Prolific General Jack Rose, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The year 1853 stands as a milestone in the progress of rose development, for in that year Roussel of France introduced General Jacqueminot to the world. Although it was introduced over 88 years ago, it is still one of the most popular roses of its class. The ordinary course of any one variety is generally far less than this. The Hybrid Perpetual group of roses, to which General Jack belongs, dates from the turn of the nineteenth century. Two of the most important progenitors of the group were introduced about 1830. The year 1837 is usually given as the year …

An Outline Of Iowa Archaeology - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, Charles R. Keyes Jan 1941

An Outline Of Iowa Archaeology - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, Charles R. Keyes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This opportunity of addressing yon on the subject of the archaeology of Iowa is appreciated for very special reasons. The Iowa Academy of Science gave me my first public hearing on this subject in 1920, just twenty-one years ago, at the meeting of the Academy in Iowa City. It was a member of this Academy also, Professor Robert Wylie, of the University of Iowa, who encouraged me with the first spoken word. Furthermore, unknown to me at the time, Professor Benjamin F. Shambaugh, Superintendent of The State Historical Society of Iowa at Iowa City, had sent one of his editors …

The Rose Crimson Rambler And Its Progenies, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney Jan 1940

The Rose Crimson Rambler And Its Progenies, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The year 1893 is an important landmark to the rosarian as in that year Charles Turner of Slough, England, introduced the Crimson Rambler rose to the occidental world. Nothing is known of its parentage, it having been introduced from Japan where it had been grown for an unknown period of time. When it was first introduced it was called the "Engineer." Later, it was known as "Turner's Crimson Rambler." Still later the name Turner was dropped, making it the "Crimson Rambler" as we know it today. Without regard to name, this rose introduction has proven to be a prolific parent …

Ammonia And Organic Nitrogen Determinations In Stream Pollutions Studies, Jack J. Hinman Jr., W. Keith Weeber, R. Rupert Kountz Jan 1940

Ammonia And Organic Nitrogen Determinations In Stream Pollutions Studies, Jack J. Hinman Jr., W. Keith Weeber, R. Rupert Kountz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Determinations of ammonia in water supplies go back to the time of Chevreul in 1811. Titration procedures for the estimation of the substance were worked out by Boussingault (2), Bineau (1) and Thompson (9) during the 18SO's. And there are already numerous modifications of the method for the estimation of total organic nitrogen developed by Johann Kjelclahl (6) in the Carlsberg Laboratory, in Copenhagen, in 1883. It is not meant to imply, by the title given this paper that basically new and original methods for the determination of nitrogen as ammonia or in its organic compounds are to be presented. …

Rosa Multiflora And Its Progeny, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney Jan 1939

Rosa Multiflora And Its Progeny, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The introduction of Rosa multiflora Thunberg into England from Japan in 1781 was a high light in the history of rose growing. This one species has proven very valuable in the production of new varieties. Its offspring have been classed with several different groups depending on their habit of growth and flowering. Rosa multiflora progeny are found among the Multiflora, Polyantha, Hybrid Musk, Lambertiana, Hybrid Wichuraiana, Hybrid Polyantha, and other groups.

Thermal Stresses In An Isosceles Right-Tri-Angular Plate With Pinned Edges, D. L. Holl Jan 1939

Thermal Stresses In An Isosceles Right-Tri-Angular Plate With Pinned Edges, D. L. Holl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The object of this paper is two-fold: (1) to show that in certain cases of simply supported plates, the problem of thermal stresses due to unequal surface temperatures is equivalent to a membrane problem under normal surface pressure; and (2) to give some results for an isosceles right-triangular plate.

The Second Virial Coefficient As A Measure Of Gas Imperfection, E. O. Price Jan 1939

The Second Virial Coefficient As A Measure Of Gas Imperfection, E. O. Price

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The combined laws of Boyle and of Gay-Lussac give the familiar formula pv = nRT for the equation of state of any gas. No single gas, however, obeys this law exactly under all conditions. The classical experiment of Joule, moreover, seemed to show that the internal energy of a gas is independent of the volume, or (δU/δV)τ . More exact measurements subsequently performed by Joule and Thomsen established the fact that this conclusion is also inexact for all real gases, but that it is approached more closely the more a gas approaches the 'ideal state'. Deviations from these two laws …

A Comparison Of Four Methods Of Increasing The Reading Speed Of College Students, Lyle K. Henry, A. R. Lauer Jan 1939

A Comparison Of Four Methods Of Increasing The Reading Speed Of College Students, Lyle K. Henry, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Research in the field of education has brought out many weaknesses of the older systems and methods of presenting subject matter. Perhaps some of the most revealing studies have been in the field of reading. The early work of Dodge (1) has been adequately supplemented by the researches of Gates (2) Judd (4) Gray and others. Not only have vast individual differences in reading rate been noted, but marked improvement has also been effected by systematic practice exercises. Much of the earlier work was done with grade pupils in the regular courses of study in reading. More recently Pressey (6) …

Frequency Of Serious Visual Defects, Edith Burma, A. R. Lauer Jan 1939

Frequency Of Serious Visual Defects, Edith Burma, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many practitioners have thousands of cards in their patient files which might be used to determine the visual conditions of clinical patients when they appear for examination. From the standpoint of the motor vehicle administrator, two other problems exist. One treats of what the practitioner would find if he were to examine a random sampling of the population to ascertain the extent of visual defects, using regular clinical methods. The other deals with the percentage of defects which a trained examiner giving regular driver’s license examinations might find in a non-clinical population. By non-clinical we mean a sampling of the …

Analysis Of Difficulties In Reading And Learning To Read, Bena K. Hansen Jan 1939

Analysis Of Difficulties In Reading And Learning To Read, Bena K. Hansen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Probably one of the most difficult of mental tasks undertaken by human beings is one that must be begun by the child at five to "even years of age. If the tools with which he works at this task, namely, learning to read, are not up to par, his reading will be carried on in a defective manner or may not even be achieved at all. Bad habits of attacking this task may also handicap the child in learning to read. Inability to read with some degree of efficiency is the cause of failure in school and conflicts in both …
