Soleil D'Or, The Progenitor Of Golden Colored Roses, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1900 when Monsieur J. Pernet-Ducher introduced a new yellow rose, a seedling of Persian Yellow pollinated by Antoine Ducher, and named it Soleil d'Or, he little realized the magical color combinations that this one variety was destined to transmit to the succeeding generations of hybrid tea roses. From the introduction of La France in 1867 until 1900, there were no true yellow hybrid teas. During this period the Noisette Marechal Niel fulfilled the need for a yellow rose. Needless to say, Soleil d'Or soon became very popular both as a garden subject and as a source of new blood …

The Spread Of Perennial Sow Thistle In Iowa, Ada Hayden Jan 1944

The Spread Of Perennial Sow Thistle In Iowa, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sow thistle is not a thistle as the common name implies, but it belongs nevertheless to the Thistle Family, Compositae. The genus Sonchus, according to Hegi (1931), is widely distributed in cultivated parts of the temperate and even the subtropical world, and the four ruderal species, now extending their range in North America, are found in Europe, Asia, parts of Africa, and South America. They include the perennials Sonchus arvensis L. and Sonchus arvensis L. var. glabrescens Guenth., Grab., and Wimm. as well as the annuals Sonchus asper (L.) Hill and Sonchus oleraceus L.

Verbascum Phlomoides L. And V. Lychnitis L. In Iowa, Robert C. Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Verbascum phlomoides L. does not appear on Cratty's list (1933) of the Iowa flora. Rydberg (1932) mentions Iowa as one of the states in which it is found, stating that its habitats are "waste places." Somes (1913), in his "'Notes on the Flora of Johnson County, Iowa" claims that it is, "Rare but established at Iowa City and Hill's Sidings." There are five specimens of V. phlomoides in the herbarium of the State University of Iowa. Shimek collected and identified three of them in Iowa City. He found two specimens in "Black's pasture west of City Park" on July 7, …

A Study Of The Improvement Of Reading Rate And Comprehension, Louise Brown, A. R. Lauer, Edith Uhl Jan 1944

A Study Of The Improvement Of Reading Rate And Comprehension, Louise Brown, A. R. Lauer, Edith Uhl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Most studies of reading have dealt with one or the other of two factors involved: (a) speed and (b.) comprehension. The psychological act of obtaining meaning from the printed page is very involved, as in any process of symbolic interpretation. It is here contended that either of the two factors cited is in itself inadequate and that they must be combined to give a meaningful index of accomplishment. Such a concept is herein described as the reading efficiency index and is obtained by multiplying the rate in words per minute by the comprehension calculated in per cent. It compares favorably …

Schiaparelli's Shooting Stars, C. C. Wylie, James R. Naiden Jan 1943

Schiaparelli's Shooting Stars, C. C. Wylie, James R. Naiden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The fundamental work on this translation was done by Miss Francis M. Svaldi, a student working on National Youth Administration funds. After Miss Svaldi's graduation, her work was revised and corrected by James R. Naiden, Special Research Assistant in Astronomy (now 1st Lieutenant Army Air Corps), working under the direction of C. C. Wylie, Professor of Astronomy. The pressure of war work, and the enlistment of Mr. Naiden in the Armed Forces, have made it impossible to smooth out the translation as planned. However, it has been thought best to publish it in its present form, since it is not …

The Attention Value Of Color Evaluated By Means Of Ocular Photography, Herman F. Brandt Jan 1943

The Attention Value Of Color Evaluated By Means Of Ocular Photography, Herman F. Brandt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Innumerable research studies have been made to evaluate the intensity of color. The general consensus of opinion is that color has attentional advantages over black and white, and in order to gain and sustain attention a bit of chroma thrown in will generally solve the problem. The purpose of this study was to evaluate by means of ocular photography. The attensity of red as compared to black and white of a given field. Fifty subjects were selected at random to observe an exposure card, while their eye movements were photographed. Two advertisements, one in color and the other in black …

Application Of The Group Conference Method Of Teaching To Beginning Classes In Plant Pathology, I. E. Melhus, G. C. Kent Jan 1943

Application Of The Group Conference Method Of Teaching To Beginning Classes In Plant Pathology, I. E. Melhus, G. C. Kent

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The teacher's ability to stimulate and to work with each student largely determines the value derived from a course by the student. The contact of teacher with the individual student is more difficult to effect in large classes (50 students or more) than in small classes. In the large classes a restraint and formality may prevail that are lacking in groups of 20 students or fewer.

Mme. Caroline Testout: The Grand Dame Of The Roses, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In all breeding work one finds that certain individuals are outstanding in the production of superior progeny. In animal breeding these individuals form the basis for pedigreed stock. An intensive study on the parentage of rose varieties has revealed that certain roses also have produced more named offspring than others. To obtain this information, it was necessary to make a search through the world's most important literature on the rose. This study resulted in the compilation of an index of about 5,000 rose varieties on which parentage data had been recorded.
