Socio-Economic Status Of A Sample Of Rural Future Teachers Compared With Status Of Rural Pupils In School, William H. Dreier Jan 1955

Socio-Economic Status Of A Sample Of Rural Future Teachers Compared With Status Of Rural Pupils In School, William H. Dreier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Within the past ten years p5ychologists have seen more and more evidence from their research that the influence of social class of the school pupil may be as important in determining the success of the individual child as is his mental age, his chronological age, his physical development and his emotional stability. Eells, Davis, Havighurst, Herrick and Tyler (1) have presented this kind of information. Of special importance to the teacher as she considers the problem of classroom motivation is the wide differences which have been found between the social class of the teacher and the majority of her pupils. …

Evaluation Of Techniques In Estimating A Mearns Cottontail Population, Charles W. Crunden, George O. Hendrickson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Field research to obtain information on the productivity and population of Mearns cottontail was conducted from June 17 to December 4, 1953. The study area of about 80 acres was part of a dairy farm, Section 13, Woodland Township, Decatur County, a central southernmost cm~nty of Iowa. The plant cover consisted of alfalfa 30 acres, oats 20, pastured grasses 10 acres, fallow forbs 10 acres, and trees and shrubs, chiefly along fence lines and gullies, 10 acres. The precipitation of 13 inches during the period, little more than one-half the normal, reduced the plant growth considerably. Reduction in cover through …

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is a great privilege for me to be called upon to give this lecture at your meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science. I am most thankful for the invitation and cordial reception which you have tendered tome. I should like to present to you a short aperçu of the development of Zoology in France, during the first part of the present century. It seems to me that such a review must not only treat of the men, institutions and works which arose during this period in zoology, but should also, and more generally, show how the major events …

Educators have long been aware of the varied needs, abilities, and interests of the children in our schools. They have sought to employ appropriate curricula, materials, and methods, to meet the wide range of abilities that prevails in every classroom. Despite our attempts to bring the greatest good to the greatest number, our schools sometimes fail to meet the particular needs of the individuals and the groups they serve. Gifted children constitute one such neglected group.

Key To Seeds Of Caesalpinioideae And Mimosoideae Of North-Central States, Duane Isely Jan 1955

Key To Seeds Of Caesalpinioideae And Mimosoideae Of North-Central States, Duane Isely

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In connection with investigations of the legumes of the northcentral United States, seeds of the subject species were studied. This paper is concerned with the identification of seeds of the individual species; the seed characters of subfamilies herein treated are discussed in another report. Superficial characters are employed in the keys, and dissection of the seeds is not required. Outline diagrams are presented to facilitate interpretation of shape and size. These are all drawn to the same scale except Gymnocladus dioica and Gleditsia aquatica which are one-half the size of the others. Two terms require definition. Face line: A horseshoe …

Observations On Seeds Of The Leguminosae: Mimosoideae And Caesalpinioideae, Duane Isely Jan 1955

Observations On Seeds Of The Leguminosae: Mimosoideae And Caesalpinioideae, Duane Isely

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although largely neglected in many taxonomic studies, seeds have been found to yield valuable diagnostic characters. This is true not only at the level of genera and species (e.g. Murley 1946, 1951), but in considering the characteristics of plant families (e.g. Isely 1947, Martin 1946). In connection with an investigation of the Mimosoideae and Caesalpinioideae of the north-central states, seeds of the species under consideration were studied, and · a key based on seed characters prepared (Isely 1955). An extension of these investigations to other species and genera has resulted in the present report. Many of the observations discussed are …

An Electronic Analog Computer For The General Physics Laboratory, H. H. Helmick, P. S. Helmick Jan 1955

An Electronic Analog Computer For The General Physics Laboratory, H. H. Helmick, P. S. Helmick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Electronic analog computers are being increasingly used today in physics (1, 2), mathematics (3), and engineering (4), and we believe they are valuable as an instructional aid in a college physics department. We have found that the construction of this computer illustrated important electronic principles to our students, motivated them in their study of differential equations, gave them techniques that can be applied to problem-solving on any analog computer, and provided them solutions of some of the important equations of physics.

Relation Of Taintor And Haig Soil Series To Microrelief Of The Buried Kansan Till Surface In Jefferson County, Lowa, George M. Schafer Jan 1955

Relation Of Taintor And Haig Soil Series To Microrelief Of The Buried Kansan Till Surface In Jefferson County, Lowa, George M. Schafer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The principal soil associations which occur in Iowa have been described by Simonson, Riecken, and Smith (1952). Important in southeastern Iowa are the Mahaska-Taintor and Grundy-Haig soil association areas. The major soils of these associations have been derived from loess under grass vegetation. On the state soil association map a gradational boundary between these two soil association areas is placed near the northern boundary of Jefferson County. In southwestern Iowa functional relationships existing between the morphological, physical, and chemical properties of soils and the distribution and thickness of loess have been reported for gently sloping Brunizem soils by Hutton (1948) …

Factors Associated With The Decision Of College Freshman To Prepare For Teaching And To Attend Iowa State Teachers College, Don Dahlke

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The teaching personnel constitutes one of the most important elements in the educational system of any country. This fact is especially meaningful to the people of a democratic society, since the people in such a society are responsible for the educational system. The quality of living in a democratic society is significantly dependent upon those persons engaged in teaching.

A Rapid Softening Agent For Dried Plant Structures, Richard W. Pohl Jan 1954

A Rapid Softening Agent For Dried Plant Structures, Richard W. Pohl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the past, dried plant materials, such as fragments of herbarium specimens, have generally been softened for dissection by boiling in water. Such a process has obvious disadvantages: slowness, fire hazard, and inconvenience. Furthermore, it is impossible to apply the boiling technique to mounted herbarium specimens without removing portions of the plant. While the author was engaged in the examination of the ligules of large numbers of grass specimens, it became evident that a solution which could be applied directly to the mounted specimen to soften it in situ would be of great advantage in preventing unnecessary breakage. A little …

Biographical Note On Persoon, Chester R. Benjamin Jan 1954

Biographical Note On Persoon, Chester R. Benjamin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although the name and works of Christian Hendrik Persoon are well known to most botanists, the biography of this illustrious mycologist is not. This fact is attributable to the following reasons: the dearth of accurate information; incompleteness of any biographical account; and the difficulty involved in finding that material which is available. An attempt is made here to alleviate this situation.

Autumnal Decimation Of Mearns Cottontail, Decatur County, Iowa, 1952, Paul D. Kline, George O. Hendrickson Jan 1954

Autumnal Decimation Of Mearns Cottontail, Decatur County, Iowa, 1952, Paul D. Kline, George O. Hendrickson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In summer and early in autumn hunters frequently see many cottontails along roads. When they start to hunt the animals late in autumn, the pursuers express disappointment often at the fewer rabbits, and inquire for causes of the decimation. To obtain better understanding of reasons for autumnal losses investigation was conducted on a 185-acre tract of farm land, Decatur County, Iowa, from July 28 to December 31, 1952. Particularly the losses and causative agents during September and the three following months will be reported.

The Relation Of Buckthorn To Losses From Crown Rust Of Oats, W. H. Bragonier Jan 1954

The Relation Of Buckthorn To Losses From Crown Rust Of Oats, W. H. Bragonier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Crown rust is the most destructive disease of oats in Iowa. Losses during the 1930's and early 40's ran high; 30 per cent in 1941. From 1944 to 1948 very little rust occurred, but from 1949 to 1952, loss estimates averaged $45,000,000 per year. The role of buckthorn (Rhammus cathartica L.) as the alternate host of the crown rust pathogen (Puccinia coronata Corda) was discovered by De Bary in 1866. More recent research has shown all species of Rhamnus susceptible to one or more varieties of this leaf rust producing fungus. Occurring in hedges and as escaped bushes …

The 1953 Crown And Stem Rust Epidemic Of Oats In Iowa, Arden F. Sherf Jan 1954

The 1953 Crown And Stem Rust Epidemic Of Oats In Iowa, Arden F. Sherf

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Rather than to rely on the efforts of historians of the future, this paper will record the devastating oat rust epidemic that occurred in Iowa in 1953. Pertinent facts regarding the initiation, development, geographic distribution, and final loss estimates due to oat crown rust and stem rust will be presented. Attempts will be made to correlate rust spread and development with available meteorological data. · Rusts have attacked cereals for all of recorded history. Some of the oldest rust records are to be found in the Bible where Hebrew writers frequently mention rusts, smuts, and blights on their grain crops. …

Property Variations In The Wisconsin Loess Of East-Central Iowa, C. A. Lyon, R. L. Handy, D. T. Davidson Jan 1954

Property Variations In The Wisconsin Loess Of East-Central Iowa, C. A. Lyon, R. L. Handy, D. T. Davidson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As part of a long-range project to investigate the stabilization of loess and glacial till for low cost road construction, property studies of the Wisconsin loess of east-central Iowa were carried on at the Engineering Experiment Station of Iowa State College during the year 1952-1953. Previous work 1,2,3,4 1950-1952, dealt with the properties of the Wisconsin loess of southwestern Iowa; stabilization studies are now under way with the loess from that area. In east-central Iowa, the loess was studied with a two-fold objective: to determine the variations in properties pertinent to stabilization, and to compare these properties with those of …

Winter Movements And Covey Composition Of The Eastern Bob-White, Roger H. Boehnke Jan 1954

Winter Movements And Covey Composition Of The Eastern Bob-White, Roger H. Boehnke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Before a game species can be managed properly, it is necessary to have a knowledge of its mobility patterns. The radius of mobility from a center will determine minimum range requirements for the game bird or mammal. Some of the earliest banding studies (Stoddard, 1931) indicated that nearly half of the quail spent their life-spans within a quarter mile of their birth places. Few ever wandered more than a mile. Later studies in other parts of the country (Duck, 1943; Lehmann, 1946; Murphy and Baskett, 1952) have shown that quail make longer movements. Because of these varying movement records in …

A Study Of Small Business Record-Keeping Practices In Florence, Arizona, With Implications For Revision Of Bookkeeping Instruction, Carlton Vae Geiler

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Students have a right to expect the high school bookkeeping course to aid them in taking their places in the business world of today. Our nation's democratic and economic ideals have long included those of individual initiative and the ability to care for oneself and his family in so far as he is capable. This philosophy is exemplified in the fact that most of our daily business transactions are carried on through small retail business concerns owned and operated primarily by individuals and partners.
