The history of physical education goes back to the early Greek civilization. The Greeks attached a great deal of importance to physical education in the development of the individual. Since this early beginning a variety of physical education programs have been developed in different civilizations. The Roman civilization looked upon physical education as amens of maintaining the military strength of their country. During the Middle Ages the early Christians believed that the emphasis on the development of the body was degrading and rejected physical education. However, because of the importance of hunting and personal combat during this period, the emphasis …
Colonel David B. Henderson: Speaker Of The House, Willard Hoing
Colonel David B. Henderson: Speaker Of The House, Willard Hoing
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The prominence of Iowa in national political affairs has long since declined. A little more than a half century ago her sons were high in the councils of state. Her Senators had acquired great prestige; her Representatives spoke with a voice of authority in Bouse committees. An Iowan was Speaker of the House of Representatives and ten important congressional committee chairmanships were held by Iowans. Two cabinet portfolios--the Treasury and Agriculture--were held by men from the Hawkeye state. Iowans twice neared the presidential office and one might have ridden into office on an assassin's bullet had he previously been willing …

The Control Of Poison Ivy, A. L. Bakke, E. P. Sylwester
The Control Of Poison Ivy, A. L. Bakke, E. P. Sylwester
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Poison ivy (Rhus radicans L.) is a woody perennial, reproducing by seeds and creeping root stalks. It is found in rocky fields, pastures, fence rows, on roadsides, railroad embankments, under telephone lines, and in rich alluvial woodlands. Poison ivy is native in Iowa and widespread throughout the United States and Canada. Earliest mention of poison ivy was made by Captain John Smith in 1609. J. P. Cornut described the plant in his work on Canadian plants in 1635. It has been shown that as many as 26 different kinds of birds arc responsible for the wide dissemination of poison ivy.
Analysis Of Whistling Patterns In The Eastern Bob-White, Colinus V. Virginianus L., James B. Elder
Analysis Of Whistling Patterns In The Eastern Bob-White, Colinus V. Virginianus L., James B. Elder
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The cheery whistle of the male bob-white, Colinus v. virgmzanus L., is a familiar and welcome sign of spring wherever this species occurs. Game biologists have made practical use of the bob-white's whistle by using roadside counts of whistling bob-whites as a means of estimating changes in relative abundance from year to year (Bennitt, 1951) . As devised by Bennitt for use in Missouri, the roadside whistle counts required the services of a large number of observers. Each obsnver was assigned a predetermined "station" consisting of about thirty miles of all-weather road within a major soil type. Counts were made …

The Importance Of Federal Assistance In Maintaining The School Lunch Programs Of Jones County, Iowa, James Joseph Gonski
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
School lunch programs, from their small beginnings early in the century, have become increasingly important to the education, health, and well-being of the youth of America. Through them, growing numbers of the school-age population receive approximately one-third of their daily food requirement. They also may learn about the nutritional values of the foods to which they are accustomed and the various ways these can be prepared and served. Through their school work they gain experience with new foods; they learn how foods are prepared, where they are produced, and how they fit into people's daily diets.

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
It was the purpose of this study to present a workable plan for preparing and operating a marionette theatre at the junior high school level. Although a great deal of material for the construction of the marionette theatre has been published and although the marionette theatre has been used in the junior high school, no material has been written specifically for use in the junior high school. This study presents a simple and workable plan for the operation of a marionette theatre which should be of value to the inexperienced teacher and to the teacher who is limited in facilities …

Criteria For The Utilization Of Teacher Committees In Planning New School Buildings, Robert D. Benton
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
A neat, marble-columned school building stood on a hill overlooking the bustling main street and the neat, well-kept homes of Hometown, Iowa. The dedication ceremonies for the building had been held late the previous spring, and the bright, well-lighted classrooms were ready for the fall influx of students. The school building had been the fulfillment of many years of dreaming, planning, and working. Mr. Jones, the superintendent, had spent countless hours in laying out the floor plan just as he thought it should be. Interested citizens had offered their suggestions. which had been graciously accepted, and, for the most part, …

Some Uses Of An Oscilloscope In High School Physics, John Ray Bolte
Some Uses Of An Oscilloscope In High School Physics, John Ray Bolte
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Use of the cathode ray oscilloscope in the high school physics class has, in many instances, been overlooked by the high school physics teacher as a means of increasing the student's understanding of certain electrical phenomena. In many cases, the teacher may not be well acquainted with the use of an oscilloscope and, very often, the teacher may feel that the cost of such an instrument is beyond the limits of the typical high school science budget.

Susceptibility Of Soybean Petioles To Attack By Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Caulivora, John Dunleavy
Susceptibility Of Soybean Petioles To Attack By Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Caulivora, John Dunleavy
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora is a fungus that causes stem canker disease of soybean. The fungus forms a dark canker at the node of a diseased stem (Figure 1) and as the canker enlarges it eventually girdles the stem killing the tissues above the canker. Stem canker is a disease of considerable economic importance in the north central portion of the United States. The fungus has been observed attacking more than 70 percent of the plants in severely diseased fields in Iowa. Prior to 1948 stem canker was confused with the pod and stem blight disease of soybean, caused by …

Growth, Form And Survival Of Plantation-Grown Broadleaf And Coniferous Trees In Southeastern Lowa, Norman J. Hansen, A. L. Mccomb
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Old fields and degraded forest lands in southern Iowa were acquired by the State of Iowa during the period 1935 to 1941. A forestation program was initiated in conjunction with the Civilian Conservation Corps. Hundreds of acres of conifers and broadleafs were planted, principally during the years 1937 through 1941, on eroded upland ridge tops, steep side slopes and narrow drainage basins in the vicinities of Chariton, Keosauqua and Farmington, Iowa. Because of insufficient knowledge and experience concerning forestation practices applicable in this area, the selection of species and planting procedures was approached experimentally. A survey of these plantations was …

B-Vitamins Stimulatory To Cellulose Digestion By Washed Suspensions Of Rumen Microorganisms, Glen Hall, Edmund W. Cheng, Wise Burroughs
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Numerous investigators have reported the presence of unidentified factors in certain feedstuffs and other materials which stimulate rumen microbial activity in vitro (1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 10). Recently Ruf et al. (11) showed that extracts of yeast, cow manure and several feedstuffs stimulated the rate of cellulose digestion when they were added to a purified medium used for the in vitro culture of rumen microorganisms. Since many of the sources of the unidentified factors are known to contain several vitamins of the B group, it appears desirable to study the influence of certain of these vitamins on the …
Pheasant Nesting And Production In Winnebago County, Iowa, 1954, Eugene D. Kloglan
Pheasant Nesting And Production In Winnebago County, Iowa, 1954, Eugene D. Kloglan
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Since 1935 the Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit has conducted life history and management studies of the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) on the Winnebago Research Area in north-central Iowa. From 1939 to 1941, intensive investigations were centered on nesting and production on a 1520-acrc plot lying within sections 13, 14, 15, 23 and 24 of Eden Township, Winnebago County (Baskett, 1947). Field activities were curtailed during World War II, and further research on this plot was not begun until 1949 (Kozicky and Hendrickson, 1951). Changes in farming techniques, cropping practices and types of machinery used by farmers can exert a …
Thymelaea Passerina, A New Weed In The United States, Richard W. Pohl
Thymelaea Passerina, A New Weed In The United States, Richard W. Pohl
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During a survey of the loess bluffs flora of the Missouri River border of Iowa, Morrill (1953) discovered a few individuals of an unknown weed growing on bare vertical loess south of Council Bluffs. It proved impossible to identify this plant with any of the usual American manuals. It eventually was determined to be Thymelaea passerina (L.) Coss. and Germ. Inquiries addressed to the principal American herbaria revealed that only one specimen of the plant had been previously collected in this country. This was found in a pasture in Cedar County, Nebraska, in the northeastern corner of the state.

The Museum At The Iowa State Normal School (State College Of Iowa), Fred Cram
Library Documents & Reports (entire collection)
So far as a careful scanning of the catalogs of ISNS reveals, the first mention of a museum occurs in the 1896 issue, where on page 45 we find that “Natural Science has its museum well stocked with minerals, rocks, fossils dried and alcoholic specimens.”
While our Museum has usually been referred to as one of natural history, there has accumulated over the years a miscellaneous collection of other materials. There are items of historical value, such as swords, guns, and uniforms. There are old documents, coins, and curiosities. There are boats and other items from river and sea. Industrial …
The Iowan Terrace And Terrace Soils Of The Nishnabotna Valley In Western Iowa, J. F. Corliss, R. V. Ruhe
The Iowan Terrace And Terrace Soils Of The Nishnabotna Valley In Western Iowa, J. F. Corliss, R. V. Ruhe
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Smith and Riecken (1947) in their revision of the Iowan-drift border in northwestern Iowan, extended a sublobe of the Iowandrift southward to near Roselle and Halbur in Carroll County. During field studies in Carroll County in 1953, the margin of the Iowan-drift sublobe was found to extend as far southward as Manning and Templeton in Carroll County (Figure 1). The Iowan drift is delineated from the loess-mantled Kansan drift on the basis of four lines of evidence: (1) in topographic positions that preclude significant erosion on the Iowan-drift surface, calcareous loess overlies calcareous till. (2) In topographic positions that preclude …
Bending Of A Rectangular Plate With Even And Odd Order Of Boundary Conditions, J. P. Li
Bending Of A Rectangular Plate With Even And Odd Order Of Boundary Conditions, J. P. Li
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The problem of bending of a rectangular plate with clamped edges has attracted attention of authors for many years but exact solutions have never been obtained. The difficulty arises from the fact that there is no simple procedure for selecting a proper deflection function that will satisfy both the differential equation of bending and the specified boundary conditions. The only exception occurs when two opposite edges of a rectangular plate are simply supported. In such a case, a simple solution either in the form of a single series as proposed by Levy, or in the form of a double series …
