Junior High School Typewriting: A Survey Of Current Practices In Iowa And A Suggested Course Of Study, Dewayne C. Cuthbertson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem is divided into two major parts. The first part of the problem is to survey the schools in Iowa in which typewriting is presently taught in the junior high grades to determine the following:

1. Objectives of the course

2. Texts or other instructional materials used

3. Content of the course

4. Frequency of the course

5. Length of the course

6. Special problems peculiar to such courses

The second portion of the problem is the construction of a course of study for typewriting at the junior high school level.

A Proposed Citizens Committee Handbook Concerning Methods Of Studying School District Reorganization, Edwin K. Barker Jan 1957

A Proposed Citizens Committee Handbook Concerning Methods Of Studying School District Reorganization, Edwin K. Barker

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A large number of communities in Iowa have been of divided opinion concerning the problem of reorganizing their schools into more efficient administrative units and attendance areas. Many more communities will be faced with the same problem. Bitterness has developed, wrong approaches have been used and incorrect reasons have been put forth to bring about reorganization. As a result, the educational progress of the children of Iowa has been handicapped. There are many reasons why people favor or oppose reorganization other than sound educational ones.

A Study In Predicting Success In Algebra, Leslie Milton Graham Jan 1957

A Study In Predicting Success In Algebra, Leslie Milton Graham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Students of Manson High School at Manson, Iowa, select either algebra or general mathematics, subject to the approval of the principal. Some of the students' achievement records are incomplete, thus handicapping the principal in guiding the students to make their choices. As a result, several students have chosen to try algebra and have failed, and sometimes they have become discouraged and have left high school. It occurred to the writer that, if a predicting device could be established to show the student his chances in mathematics, it possibly could spare the pupil's failing in algebra.

An Analysis And Evaluation Of “Heart Of Darkness”, Robert James Dalziel Jan 1957

An Analysis And Evaluation Of “Heart Of Darkness”, Robert James Dalziel

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Al though a major part of this thesis is devoted to the analysis and evaluation of a particular work of narrative literature, it is obvious that such an analysis presupposes the existence of a general theory of literature. A critic's theory of literature determines, to some extent, the kind of criteria he may use to evaluate a particular work. In addition, the theory of literature held by the critic may have a direct influence upon his system of analysis. For these reasons, Chapter II has been given over to an elucidation of this writer's views about the nature and function …

Influence Of Time Of Application Of 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T And Ddt On Kentucky Bluegrass Seed Germination And Pasture Weed Populations, Louis N. Bass, E. P. Sylwester Jan 1956

Influence Of Time Of Application Of 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T And Ddt On Kentucky Bluegrass Seed Germination And Pasture Weed Populations, Louis N. Bass, E. P. Sylwester

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The bluegrass seed industry is continually faced with the problem of excessive amounts of weed material in the freshly stripped bluegrass seed which farmers bring to their drying yards for sale. If the weed material content is too great the seedsmen refuse to buy the bluegrass seed offered to them; however, they cannot refuse to buy all strippings which contain weed material or they will not have sufficient seed to meet the demand for processed Kentucky bluegrass seed.

Purified Ration Studies With Lambs, W.H. Hale, Wise Burroughs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The results reported in this paper are attempts to evaluate several dietary factors in the development of a purified ration for lambs that will give growth rates similar to those obtained on natural rations.

Nitrogen Uptake In Oats, S. C. Wiggans, K. J. Frey Jan 1956

Nitrogen Uptake In Oats, S. C. Wiggans, K. J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The differential ability of strains of a crop species to absorb and utilize nitrogen has important implications in the development of new field crop varieties. This fact becomes more important with the increased need for nitrogen fertilization that is necessary to maintain and improve the yields of crops. Varieties of crops which produce relatively high yields when grown on soils with limited amounts of available nitrogen will undoubtedly be more popular in the future. Harvey (6) found that some com inbreds were more efficient than others in utilizing soil nitrogen. This characteristic proved to be inherited in crosses between good …

Growth And Other Physiological Responses To Diethylstilbestrol In Diet Of Rats And Guinea Pigs, Rodney Preston, Edmund Cheng, Wise Burroughs Jan 1956

Growth And Other Physiological Responses To Diethylstilbestrol In Diet Of Rats And Guinea Pigs, Rodney Preston, Edmund Cheng, Wise Burroughs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent studies have shown that the inclusion of diethylstilbestrol (stilbestrol) in rations of fattening beef cattle (1) and lambs (2) results in stimulation of liveweight gains and improvement of overall feed utilization in these species of animals. The physiological explanations for this action of stilbestrol are not apparent at this time since no such stimulation from stilbestrol has been noted in other species of animals. In studying the mode of action of stilbestrol in fattening beef cattle and lambs, it seemed desirable to first study the growth responses of certain laboratory animals (rats and guinea pigs) to see if they …

Relationship Between Particle Size And Potassium Release In The Clarion And Marshall Soils, Raymond B. Daniels Jan 1956

Relationship Between Particle Size And Potassium Release In The Clarion And Marshall Soils, Raymond B. Daniels

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study by Lawton and Pierre (1946) of different soil types in Iowa and their potassium availability showed that the Marshall series were consistently higher in exchangeable potassium than the Clarion series. The Marshall series is developed in Wisconsin loess and is classified as a Medial Brunizem. The Clarion series is developed in Cary and Mankato till and is classified as a Minimal Brunizem. The Marshall series is dominantly a silty clay loam, whereas the Clarion series is dominantly a loam. Pratt and Morse (1954) found, when they grouped several Ohio soils by areas, the potassium release was lowest from …

An Evaluation Of One-Year Shorthand Programs In Secondary Schools With Particular Reference To The Public Secondary Schools Of Iowa, Darrell G. Jones Jan 1956

An Evaluation Of One-Year Shorthand Programs In Secondary Schools With Particular Reference To The Public Secondary Schools Of Iowa, Darrell G. Jones

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Increasing demands are being made of school administrators to enrich the curriculums of the secondary schools. The curriculums of many secondary schools are already expanded to the bursting point. Nevertheless, pupil needs must be satisfied. A careful scrutiny must be made of each offering in the secondary school curriculum. It must be determined whether or not each offering is justified. As the number of offerings in the curriculum must be limited, the curriculum offerings should be constantly reappraised. This study is intended to serve as an evaluative aid in the consideration of the place of the one-year shorthand program in …

Noxious Weed Seeds In Iowa Oats And Red Clover Samples, L. E. Everson Jan 1956

Noxious Weed Seeds In Iowa Oats And Red Clover Samples, L. E. Everson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

T

The present study is based on the occurrence of noxious weed seeds in oat and red clover seed samples submitted to the seed laboratory by Iowa farmers for seed testing. Extension workers and farmers may find this information helpful in planning local weed control programs. It may also be of value to seedsmen and farmers who purchase local seed, but wish to avoid seed lots containing noxious weed seeds.

Cultural Practices And Test Weight In Oats, K. J. Frey, S. C. Wiggans Jan 1956

Cultural Practices And Test Weight In Oats, K. J. Frey, S. C. Wiggans

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Of the several criteria of seed quality in oats, weight per bushel, or test weight, is most universally used. The standard test weight for oats is 32 pounds per bushel, but with present-day varieties and production practices, oats produced in the Corn Belt often exceed this value by from 3 to 6 pounds. The oat seed characteristics which have been found to be correlated with test weight arc: hull percentage, seed shape and size and plumpness and density of the caryopsis. Test weight in oats has been proven to be an inherited characteristic. Barring diseases such as rust, which may …

A Method For Determining Stem Canker Resistance In Soybean, John M. Dunleavy Jan 1956

A Method For Determining Stem Canker Resistance In Soybean, John M. Dunleavy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Stem canker disease of soybean is caused by the fungus, Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora, and at present there are no soybean varieties known to be highly resistant to this disease. Stem canker takes its name from the resemblance of the discolored area of an infected stem to a canker. As the infected area on a stem enlarges, the stem is girdled and the portion of the plant above the girdled area is killed. Stem canker seriously affects soybeans in the northcentral region of the United States and has been reported to cause heavy losses (Athow and Caldwell, 1954; and Dunleavy, …

Characteristics Of Some Soils Of The Iowan Till Area Of Northeast Lowa, E. M. White, F. F. Riecken Jan 1956

Characteristics Of Some Soils Of The Iowan Till Area Of Northeast Lowa, E. M. White, F. F. Riecken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The published county soil surveys show that Carrington loam and silt loam soils occur extensively in the CC and CKC areas of northeast Iowa outlined in Figure 1. Most of these soil surveys were made from 1914 to 1930, and as pointed out by Simonson, Riecken and Smith ( 1952), the former Carrington series in this area is now considered to consist of several series. In the present study several morphologically different profiles formerly included with the Carrington loam and silt loam soil types were sampled and certain laboratory determinations made. The data obtained and a brief discussion of their …

Some Observations On Regeneration In Dileptus Anser, Paul A. Meglitsch, Thomas Johnson Jan 1956

Some Observations On Regeneration In Dileptus Anser, Paul A. Meglitsch, Thomas Johnson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the most interesting capacities of protozoans is their ability to replace lost parts following injury. Although they are structurally the equivalent of cells they are functional organisms, and a study of their behavior makes it possible to bring together concepts usually applied in the cellular field with those applied in the analysis of whole organisms. The same factors that operate to evoke a particular form in the whole organism must act in a small regenerating piece of a protozoan. Whether these factors are nuclear genes or protoplasmic organization, they act rapidly in the regenerating animal, regulating the form …

Use Of Rearing Cover By Mearns Cottontail, Raymond L. Linder, George O. Hendrickson Jan 1956

Use Of Rearing Cover By Mearns Cottontail, Raymond L. Linder, George O. Hendrickson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Intensive research on the Mearns cottontail was conducted from March 26 to September 18, 1954, on an 80-acre tract of the Floyd Fleming farm in Decatur County, Iowa. The cover on the 80 acres was alfalfa for hay 13 acres, alfalfa in pasture 21 acres, grass in pasture 8 acres, corn 22 acres, fallow grassland 11 acres, and trees, shrubs and vines along fencelines and gullies and in a catalpa planting about 5 acres. The plants of the fallow grassland, fencelines and gullies were listed by Hubbard and Hendrickson (1952) in some detail.

The Effects Of Antibiotics Aureomycin And Terramycin On The Disease Crown Gall In Tomato Plants, Charles Raymond Anderson Jan 1956

The Effects Of Antibiotics Aureomycin And Terramycin On The Disease Crown Gall In Tomato Plants, Charles Raymond Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The disease crown gall manifests itself on various woody or herbaceous plants by the formation of tumor-like enlargements at the crown or on other parts or by extensive production of organs (roots, shoots). In both cases the abnormal development is an uncontrolled hyperplast, resulting in tumors or galls of varying sizes and form or in the production of organs, frequently out of normal position and in excessive numbers. Because of the frequent location of the galls on the stem or trunk near or at the ground level, the disease has been known as crown gall. Various other names such as …
